Peace Lecture 2004 - The Right Honourable David Lange

The Right Honourable David Lange (1942-2005) served as Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1984 to 1989. A skilled debater, he was well known for his quick wit and oratory. Perhaps his greatest legacy is New Zealand’s anti-nuclear legislation, which remains in force today. Here he presents the inaugural Otago Chaplaincy and Interfaith Group Peace Lecture on the topic of “Old Faiths, New World”.

What an exceptional being! Thank you for uploading this gem to RUclips, thus allowing all to see the inspiring and very human words that The Right Honourable David Lange had to share not just for those in attendance, but for all of us who would care to listen.
If only our entire nation, even the entire world, could heed his core message of peace in this lecture, humanity would be far better off for it.

I was proud to attend this lecture, which was sadly one of his last public appearances before his death less than a year later. What was remarkable about this lecture was that the big St David St lecture hall was jammed packed and even had people outside it listening in. Secondly while I photographed the ailing former PM deliver what was a marvellous lecture (which was laced with his characteristic dry humour), I noticed how weak he was to start off with, but as he progressed during it, how much stronger he became vocally. By the end of it, he was almost the same old David Lange of old. He left deservedly to a memorable standing ovation, which was not recorded on the video. I have always felt since then that this lecture theatre should be renamed the 'David Lange Memorial Lecture Theatre' instead of just the boring St David St Lecture Theatre.
