Funny that I have to even address this, but it’s worth highlighting that it’s not always about ‘person X is better than person Y’. Of course Aurora’s version is always going to be the best (because hello it’s Aurora) and I highlight in the video that what Aurora brings to her songs is like no other. But I see this as Kelly paying homage to Aurora and honouring her in her cover, not trying to perform it better in any way. Both are allowed to exist in the world without the need to compare one against the other as a means of saying who is better. Hope you all enjoy the video! I think people need to realize when they say “this is crap” or whatever about a cover like this it comes off as incredibly insecure. They are both great and to act like Kelly Clarkson of all people can’t sing or perform with emotion is wild. You can appreciate the differences without making it a competition. They are literally amazingly talented people and let’s not pretend they aren’t.
Aurorafanbr made a short video on IG with a snippet of Aurora singing CFM live and a snippet of this video with Kelly singing it, and Aurora responded to the post:
"It’s actually a very hard song to sing!!! It’s not a song you typically sound nice singing either cause it has such short notes and a very wide range and it SUCKS TO SING but it’s also fun. But yes I think she did very good. 💙 "

"That was Cure For Me by Norwegian singer/songwriter Aurora. My 7 year old son at the age of, I don't know, 5 or 6 introduced me to her. He was like: "I found this girl on youtube, and I really like her", and I was like "What??", and I was worried! And I was like: "What girl? What is she wearing?", I was freaking out.
But she is so rad, you gotta check her out, if you don't know her. Her name is Aurora. She has been writing music since she was a little girl, and she did something extra cool with her latest album "The Gods We Can Touch": She released a companion book, which is basically her personal journal while working on the album, which I thought was super cool and vulnerable."

I discovered Kelly did this a few days ago and I too thought it was so good. I was so excited hoping that perhaps this will help Aurora become more popular in the United States. This country needs more Aurora

I like that artists cover Aurora, there should have been many more. It's a great way to spread Aurora's music to a larger audience. K.C did a good cover.
Great reaction. I respect and acknowledge the talented ladies who can belt, like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, etc and so on and on, but, not really a fan of their music or that style of music. I never listen to them, art is subject to each individual person, but, yeah, huge respect for their talent. Thanks for checking this out.

Funfact: in 2003 Kelly Clarkson came second in the first, and I think the only, World Idol competition, after the norwegian Idol winner, Kurt Nilsen. The judges was not kind to him, and even named him a hobit

One of Aurora's more pop songs that didn't challenge Aurora very much, so it was a good fit for Kelly because she had room to play with it.
Aurora finds this song challenging to sing live to be honest! But I did love what Kelly did with it

This is good and only good. I will also share my slight surprise from looking up the line-up for this summer's Roskilde Festival, noticing that Aurora was one of the 6 headliners alongside "up and coming" artists like Foo Fighters, PJ Harvey and Jane's Addiction.
It is not that strange though - whenever she drops anything these days she gets 1 million views on RUclips within a week even if YT is not her main "platform" as I understand it. It is clearly not Taylor Swift or Ed Sheridan numbers (raking in billions from simply being mentioned in the Sun of the UK) but it is comparatively "high end" as of present. She has also built a solid base on all the continents (not so much Antarctica, Penguins has some self-reflection to ponder).
As an avid follower of a Japanese rock band called "Band-Maid" (not saying much more), they have also spent a decade slowly building themselves up under the radar as they have developed as the happiest and weirdest rock stars on the planet, using maid-uniforms as their warrior armour under a 600-year own pigeon as their founder (I kid you not). They are now rocking the effing pants off anything as they combine 70's Def Lepard and AC/DC, prog rock, pop-rock, J-rock and while also blending in grunge and punk and a load of blues and classical music for good measures (the lead guitarist and composed is a classically trained pianist).
As they say: "Form is temporary, class is permanent" - and it is a delight to note that this old observation still holds true after decades of one-hit-wonders 🙂
Aurora is typed out with as big letters as Foo and PJ now on "posters". It indicates that there are more warriors and weirdoes than we think.
That is a win.
While I’m not doubting that Aurora can certainly pull an audience (I’ve been to her sold out tours after all!) I just mean that it’s not unfair to say a very commercial audience like Kelly’s will have probably not heard of her.
She continues to grow in popularity and I love that for her, it’s so well deserved.

I thought this was a very good cover! There are a lot of aurora fans that are hostile when it comes to other people performing her songs (which she had to approve KC to sing this on her show just fyi) it seems like. Also, KC learns these covers the day of!! Sure she may “know” the song to a degree, but that’s not at all the same as knowing it in terms of performing it. Oh & she’s not a dancer and doesn’t dance to her own music. That’s why she didn’t do the dance. She’s just a great singer. Sorry, but it seemed like some of that needed to be said. Great reaction! 😊
Okay, I know I might seem a bit like an obsessed fan with tunnel vision right now, and that's okay. I'm aware that I've lost a lot of my objectivity when it comes to Aurora.
First of all: Good for Aurora! She is inclusive and surely happy that her songs are being covered, and yes, I agree that she deserves more exposure. It's baffling to me how many people have still never heard of her. Even here in Europe.
Apart from that, I believe there are many artists whose songs are wonderful for re-interpretations and where a cover can even surpass the original - and then there are artists where this doesn't work so well. I just tried to figure out why I think this but I still find it hard to articulate.
My feeling is simply that Aurora definitely belongs to that category of artists whose songs, when covered, can never convey the depth of emotion as when they are performed by Aurora herself. It's like someone telling me about something someone else experienced. Even if the storyteller recounts everything exactly as it happened, the narration wouldn't be nourished by the underlying experiences. I think this effect also occurs with Aurora covers, just even more pronounced.
I think that's exactly what happened here. I hear from Kelly a nice funky pop song, quite well performed. But I don't perceive her as a person who has ever been particularly in the situation where she could have first experienced the background for this song (apparently, she grew up in a conservative Christian environment), nor do I buy that she would seriously live according to the song's philosophy and not care about what others think of her. Of course, I don't know her and maybe I'm falsely attributing this to her. But when I watch this performance, I just don't buy it.
I think there are a lot of assumptions being made here and, just as you allude to in that a storyteller cannot tell someone else’s story as well, we cannot accurately apply understanding of someone’s experiences in their life based on our assumptions. I know you acknowledge that to a degree, but it’s also fair to highlight.
Of course Kelly didn’t write the song, but did she pay homage to Aurora and her incredible abilities as an artist? Absolutely
I would like to add that Kelly learns these covers the day of as well.
Kelly’s father abandoned her at 6 years old and she had to work through coming to terms with her own self worth and valuing herself just as she is. She’s written a few songs about it. It’s not like she doesn’t have life experience under belt. Her new album goes a lot into her emotional journey with her current life experiences that have brought back feelings she worked to overcome in the past actually. She has to work through them again, as is life. Many of her songs cover how she’s had to stop pleasing others and just be herself, and to let people live as they are even if it’s outside the “norm” or what’s expected of them. Anyway, both of them are amazingly talented women who put emotion into their craft.
Now let's dream that Kelly will receive Aurora on her show for the next Aurora tour in the USA... 🙂

I gave it a few listens and I’m sorry but this for me just shows how great auroras live performance of this was,I’m sorry vocally Kelly is not in the same league as Aurora,I’m not going to say it was bad because that would be not right but honestly the vocal was nowhere near the quality of Aurora if I were to score it at best it would be a 5/10
