Excellent! Exactly what is needed by someone who has not done this before, including cautions during installation. Thanks for this.
Great guide! Straightforward and with notes and cautions where necessary. Got an AGM battery for my Outback and it fired up on the first try after following this guide.
Saved me half the price I was going to be charged at the dealer!! Thank you!!!
So glad to find your video, first time touch anything inside my car, wasn’t for you, I will not be able to properly fix my problem. Can’t thank you enough.

Good detailed video. Need to swap out my OEM battery for a new one. Only thing not discussed that I see on other sites is the memory saver trick some people use to hold car memory settings.
Yea I saw that before. They put cables on it which I didn’t understand why. Or what they were even attached to. But this one they did not do that. So I’m confused
Thanks. I bought the battery last night and installed it this morning. Perfect instructions.
I haven't changed a battery in maybe 19 years, ever since I was a stock boy at Advance Auto lol. This was a very handy refresher and I coincidentally had bought a NAPA Legend.
+EquestriaGuy Thanks for checking us out, glad this video helped! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c

Isn't it a good practice to hook up a host battery before disconnecting the battery so as not to disrupt any electronics/computer in your car?
Super helpful. I just did this myself and for once it was in fact as easy as the video! Thanks
Thank you! This video saved me!!
Step-by-step instructions with clear explanations for why each step is needed. Followed it to replace my 2017 Legacy sedan's original battery with an Interstate (maker of the Subaru replacement battery), and it worked well. One ignition key turn to turn on the electronics. A second key turn to start the engine. Thanks for the video and to the experienced tech who did the work!

The dielectric grease on the connector connecting surfaces does NOT make the connection any worse. This might be a problem in a moving connection like a switch but in a stationary connection the grease just squirts away from the connecting surfaces. I suggest to apply grease all over the terminals in order to prevet that white oxide from developing.
It does NOT need to be dielectric grease. The dielectric grease is only needed when there is arcing present. The ordinary carbon hydrate grease turns into carbon when arcing occurs and carbon is a conductor. Dielectric grease is some sort of silicone which does not have carbon in it. SInce there should be no arcing in battery terminals, a normal, everyday grease will do just fine.
People argue about this but really a very thin layer, most of which gets displaced, is not going to be enough to hurt the high voltage flow and can help reduce voltage leakage when the car is off. Alternately you can buy a spray called battery terminal protectant.
Thank you it worked great for me I changed the battery without any issues. Thanks again ❤saved myself a lot of money.
Thanks for the tip about the deep set 10mm attachment!
I’m not super handy and got mine replaced!😊

Battery terminals are tapered, and so are the ends. The battery brush is also tapered to match. Clean them with the brush from the bottom up, so the tapers match.
Was not aware of that
Seems you forgot the heat shield. I know it may not fit over the new battery but, on the boxer engine the exhaust manifold (for one half of the cylinders) is located just below the battery. Bean-counters at the Subaru would have saved the company couple of pennies by removing the heat shield if they could get away with it.
Nice information thanks 😊
Thanks! Just swapped my 2015 legacy battery based on this

Very helpful. Thank you.
That was helpful. Thank you.
its really helpful!! thanks!!😉
Great video,I am trying to see if typically any program issues happen on these Outback’s after the Battery is changed ?
will my electronics work if i change the batter this way? do i need to hook it up to a host battery first or does it not matter?
Didn't you forget to put the hooked battery bolt back in place? I just changed my battery and didn't know if that was a big deal or not.
There is a factory case shield that was on the battery you pulled out. You left it on the old battery. You should slide that on the new battery before you put the battery hold down bracket on.
+Al Baran Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
It's because they swapped the stock group 25 battery for an improved group 26 battery. The new battery is too large for the stock head shield. This is very commonly done on outbacks of these years in order to have more choices and higher CCA's. Subarus OEM battery are staggeringly smaller than they should be. This is probably because it marginally helps them gain MPG.
@@gt5228z The stock sized battery can't keep up with all the onboard electronics and plugged in devices. It was a poor choice by Subaru.
Couple of things. Don't you want to put the battery handle under the bracket? Also, shouldn't you transfer the battery case from the old battery to the new?
+WeirdG If it doesn't get in the way and works fine, it's personal preference
Outback batteries have a insulating sleeve covering the battery and she forgot to transfer it.
how come this video doesn't mention anything about losing memory settings? will i lose memory settings on my vehicle if I swap batteries this way?
Registration of the battery? Is not necessary? Thanks
.... and now you take it to the dealer to recalibrate all the electronics, as nothing works.
Agreed. Changed the battery on my 2017 Subaru Outback and now it won't start. The only thing that turns on are the dash lights.
Thanks!
Thank you for the video. It helped us replace our battery today. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
What type of holder do I get for the battery? Could you point me in the right direction? I have a 2016 Subaru
What about all of the settings on a 2020?
If you use your method all settings, windows, radio, and such are gone.
Can you explain a host battery during changing process please?
Thanks for the tip.
+Wong Jefx Thank you!
Hi. Need some help. I have a 2018 WRX Limited with an OEM Subaru battery. Electrical system and battery have been fine up till now; no electrical issues at all. I just wanted to clean the corrosion around the terminals. I disconnected both terminals, cleaned them up, and then reconnected it all back at it was. Now I'm having a problem with the Starlink Infotainment system only; every other electrical is good. The radio system will not reboot/restart. The progress bar reaches the end and then starts over again. What gives? Is this typical if you were to change a battery? Is there a way to reset the Starlink radio? There are not options to select, nor does it ask for a radio code. The backup camera works just fine. I tried disconnecting the terminals again, but no luck. Any suggestions?
Do you know where the neutral safety switch is on a 2015 Subaru Outback?
Darn. I was here for the darn battery brackets. Lol. Not sure I got them on right.
Forgot to take the installation shield off the old battery and put it on the new battery.
Weird ~ The battery carry handle will not fit under the battery hold down bracket, the dealer cuts off the battery carry handle! This way you need to go back to the dealership for parts?

Subaru sue lets gooooooo!
Replacing a battery is common on these vehicles. Check out my channel for information on the class action lawsuit, or see your dealership for a possible ECM (software) update.
Too bad you don't mention the console reset after a battery change. Changing a battery is pre-school
+W.T.F Pipe Dream with hopefully a Brain Fart Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Thanks for video, I have two questions:
Can I replace OEM battery with normal Lead-acid battery provided that I always disable start stop?
Does car computer require reprogramming if I install a bit bigger battery?
The computer reprograms itself after you drive a few miles. Only thing that is weird is that the driver side window controls won't controls the front passenger side window until you fully lower and raise it with the passenger side controls. Also, leave the rear tailgate down as you do the battery swap to avoid a common issue with the auto tailgate.
@@gt5228z my car turns on but shuts off
@@droid4d279 is it a push button start? If not, I'd question the chipped key. If so, my first place would be an autozone to check the alternator.
The background music was quite distracting and irritating. Why put that on at all? The presentation was fantastic!
Great video, thanks!
