I am five weeks removed from my TKR. Your videos have proven invaluable to me and will continue to do so. I have a commercial grade elliptical in my home and love it. Following your advice, I've slowly progressed successfully as I begin to use it. Thank your for posting your videos. And yes, I have subscribed. 🙂
I had knee replacement 15 weeks ago on my right knee. I am now back to hiking and riding my bicycle and it feels great. Before and after surgery I watched several of your videos and they were a great help to me in my recovery. Thank you very much!
June 8th 2023 I am getting knee replacement in one month. I am so glad we already have an elliptical trainer! Thank you for this initial information on why and how to use it
Ive been so excited to get back on my eliptical. It a basic one....the physio keeps telling me to wait...maybe he is worried about the getting on and off. Great demo! Sets of ten. Got to start somewhere.... Im getting heck not walking correctly after my tkr. Im at 4 weeks.
I had TKR 4 weeks ago and started using a cane at the end of the second week. I do PT everyday but look forward to getting back to the gym. The elliptical machine is my favorite tool and this video has helped me how to start using it again safely. Plan to start tomorrow. Thank you
Once again..and again...you out do yourself. Your detail to mechanics is at a genius level. You gave many pieces of important nuggets of education. Every gym trainer/ PT need to study under You, Tony. You just keep giving..hoping ppl "get it". Luv luv luv ya buddy. Thxs!
Great advice Tony! 5 weeks into my TKR and PT had me try an elliptical at my last visit. Besides getting my walking stride stronger it seems like it is a workout of sorts for your upper body too and can help my weakened back and arms after surgery by moving in a vertical position rather than in a sitting position on a bike. Thoughts?
thanks for that advice Tony! I'd love to know more about using a leg press in the gym too. I'm needing to gain strength in my knees and regular PT isn't doing it 6 months post op, tkr. I'll start using the elliptical!
I had TKR on both of mine and I played senior softball up to my surgery in great pain. Now I have no pain at all, I'm back at the gym, now I need to learn to run again with no fear, can you help?
Thanks again Tony, great advice on this. Here in the UK, it’s more commonly called a cross trainer, no idea why. I used to do one hour a day at the gym before my work knee injury one year ago. I’m 6 weeks after tkr surgery, it’s a very steep uphill recovery process but all your vids are a huge help. I now have one at home that also has a seat, which is great for safely getting back into it. There’s good days and not so good days, mainly because of the swelling (I went back on naproxen which seems to be working), but managed 20mins today comfortably seated most of the time. Along with everything else, physio, walking etc, this unit is my favourite.
Oh yes I subscribed!! Your content has been so helpful and encouraging. Im day 9 post tkr. How soon do you suggest using the elyptical? Thanks so much . Michelle!😊
Hi I did not have knee replacement but I do have basically bone on bone on my right knee and my left knee is close to that. But, not sure if I should get a elliptical or recumbent bike. Thank you for your video taught me alot
Hi tony, I'm on my 12 weeks after total knee replacement, how many minutes do I need to use a elliptical machine with 0 resistance and no incline to recover
Great advice! I could not use an elliptical before my surgery right weeks ago and now I can, but the handles at therapy are locked. My PT says I can progress to moving handles at the Senior Center where I've resumed upper body workouts. Do you have advice on how to add that dimension? You explain these things better than anyone else I know of.
Thank you for this review. I am 6 years post bilateral total knee replacement. I need a low-impact exercise machine that is easy on my knees. I really like the rear-drive elliptical you are using in this video. Can you please share the name of the rear-drive elliptical you are using here?
How often and how long at a time should one use an elliptical machine? Should one try to increase their time and resistance gradually on the elliptical? Thank you. I was looking for a video like this. I’m about ten weeks postoperative TKR.
Have you tried a lateral trainer? There is one made by helix at my gym? The bicycles have longer strokes than the one at the PT's office and my knee has a tough time warming up to it.
Are you familiar with the Cubii? Elliptical that sits on the floor. Would this be good to use in your opinion? I am 11 weeks post surgery and am stuck now for 3 weeks. With PT pushing leg I get to about 100 then revert after to 90 degrees. Thank you
Anthony, I'm an avid follower of yours. I have TKR scheduled in June. I am trying to shop elliptical machines. I saw your suggested machines, but a couple of them are not available anymore. The Schwinn looks good to me, especially because I've owned a Schwinn exercise bike for the last 13 years and use it all the time. But I want shop a few other brands. What do you suggest?
I have an elliptical great. I had a tibial plateau fracture 3 years ago. That’s where my bone on bone is now. Some days I really hurt some days are ok. I’ve been told I need a knee replacement no shots. I’m confused. I’ve had two total hips. I’m just scared I guess.
Tony...I have a rowing machine but I haven't tried it yet at 7 weeks post op. I guess I will have to go to a gym to continue my PT (with the eliptical) and other equipment. Also, I still cannot walk down the stairs yet. What equipment will help?
Is there too much resistance after TKR to use a spin bike? I was thinking of using once gyms open up? I am 2 years post op..no pain but only 120 degree bend.
We have clients start the elliptical in the first days post op. As long as you don’t feel nauseous or light headed. It requires less knee Flexion than a bike and is usually more comfortable.
I have barely ever tried an Elliptical device. When you get on it - are there any specific difficulty settings a knee replacement recipient needs to know ?
I’ll let him define the parameters of use but on mine you can select the program, time and resistance. It even allows you to select reverse. I’d suggest starting with ten minutes or so, warm up with low level resistance and increase as appropriate.
I prefer the elliptical over the bike right from the start. If my client feels comfortable and no dizziness or nausea I will start elliptical in the first week.
Than you so very much for all your informative videos I am in my 6 week of TKR I am 67 . I have more pain in my lower calf burning pain. I found your roll in pin video and purchased an physical therapy on waiting on it to get here. Do you have and other exercises that will help the muscles to the side of the hip and behind the hip. It has given me trouble ever since the surgery. Again thank you so very much hope your family is safe.
Cathy...I'm no expert but the surgeon uses a VERY tight tourniquet on our thigh during surgery to suppress bleeding during surgery and I have had the same issue! At 7 weeks post op, I find that massage and a warm bath relaxes the muscle and soothes it. Mine is slowly getting better but I think quite a bit of soft tissue is hurt (maybe not damaged) and takes awhile to recuperate and heal.

I love the elliptical so much more than a bike for regular exercise. Good to know it can be used if you have a knee replacement too! Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. We bought one just before we had our first child. It sat in my bedroom for 11 years until we finally got it out to my clinic.

That makes sense to use the elliptical instead of the bike... if the patient can't stand up, is there an option for a seated elliptical?
There are recumbent ellipticals, including some sold on Amazon!
I had total knee replacement 12 days ago can I use the elliptical now
What about a rowing machine any + or - of using it

When can or should you use a rower after a total knee replacement
I have had patients use a rower from day 1 PO. I have a video on this channel about the rower. Let me find it for you.
