I was 4 years old. A rambunctious, active 4 year old. My mother tells me I sat still for the entire show. A first. I fell in love with both ladies and the love affair continues to this day. Thank you ladies for a lifetime of music and laughter.
I was 15 when I saw this performed on TV. That same year, 2 girls in my high school drama class lip-synced to one of the songs from this show during an extravaganza our class put on called Dramarama. It was so perfectly done they got a standing ovation. I was supposed to appear in a number from West Side Story, but it was cut at the last minute and I ended up working in the lighting booth. After the show, we celebrated at a favorite local ice cream parlor. I sat through the entire celebration, eating no ice cream, with my lip poked out in disappointment.
You should have enjoyed that ice cream! Lighting is an important job on stage and I’m sure you did an awesome job! Thank you for sharing and have a Merry Christmas!

I have the LP record from my parent's large collection of show music. This is the first time I ever saw the broadcast that the record belonged to. Boy, what a show!
I was born in 1962 and these two beautifully grown up talented women set The standard fir humor and that knowing sense of grown up fun . They were so aware of what each was known for but what set them apart was that both could deliver. What a treat and forever their friendship will go on because they loved to have fun together. Lucky us

The Nausiev Ballet was a spoof of the Rudolph Nureyev ballet tour of the time and of course ,From Switzerland: The Pratt Family was a spoof of the stage play The Sound of Music I wish this were available on dvd

Carol and a wonderful contralto voice with great comedic acting skills . Singers today scream. Very few sing Bel Canto. You have to go to Opera to find that. Pop stars of my era. with flawless voices: Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt, Barbara Streisand, etc, are sadly missing on the scene. Screaming loudly and shrieking does not count for what I am taking about.

Julie didn't win her first Emmy (despite four nominations) until her TV variety show won in 1972 (beating Carol's show in the process).

That’s not true. My Fair Lady helped Julie land Camelot, helped Walt Disney to discover her for Mary Poppins, helped Robert Wise to secure her for The Sound of Music. These specials where for American Broadway enthusiasts to see to Broadway stars perform.
When they chose the best female Carnegie Hall concerts this was one of the three best ones with the 1975 Barbara Cook concert and of course the best one the 1961 Judy Garland performance

It seems to me that Carol is not feeling well and is ill. She is sweating profusely and it explains her periodic odd behavior. Especially towards the end during Julie's solo. She looks like she's about to pass out.
it might be bc of the stage lights, and the heat. as a performer, the stage is really hot when you have all of the lights on you, and singing for 50 mins straights is really hard.
I always thought the 'The Nausiev Ballet' sequence was based on the Moiseyevs which had recently toured the USA. "The Moiseyev Dance Company made its first American tour in 1958 and its second in 1961." (The New York Times - May 6, 1964). That certainly fits with the style of exotic high end folk dance they did, rather than classical Ballet of Nureyev. The West Side Story ending of the Musicals sequence always gets me.

Carol was horrified when she remembered this gag in the show; but honoured to be the first person Julie told she was pregnant.
True. But Julie is contradicting herself on the time line, as well. In other interviews she has said that she (and Carol) already knew about the pregnancy filming this show. In the Book she says the opposite. I haven’t read anything from Burnett on that topic though. Anyone?
I’ve listened to her audio version 2 years ago (almost to the date), driving down from Canada back to Duluth, MN and remember going like “wtf? I just read an interview where she said Carol knew at that point and was mortified about hitting her”. 2yrs is a long time, I’ll go searching my brain, @sam carpetier. :)
