They set up sidious using the force to save vader with the story of "Darth Plagueis the Wise" who could prevent the death of those he cared about. A power you can not learn from a jedi. The powerful music and imagery here is so profound. It shows the painful irony of the dark side. Anakin did what he did to save his wife, but since it was done with the selfish desire and motives of the dark side, he rises from his wounds, and she falls in death. The dark side is truly only capable of saving yourself, not others. One of the best Star Wars scenes. Brilliant.
This shit will always get me, Anakin went through all of what he went through just to have her die and to have him stuck in the dark side as sidious' apprentice
George Lucas is brilliant. The exact moment after Padme dies, Darth Vader is being risen from surgery. Almost as if Anakin & Padme died together, by the evil of Darth Vader.
I'm not even sure they want to try it. If you think about it this at that time was the sixth and last film of the franchise.Despite episode 1,2 fans were still pumped for the origin of vader,it took a looot of build up to come to this moment. The new sequels, despite being mediocre imo, they lack both quality and quantity to pull off something like that.Even If you love kylo and rey,I think their story arc was overshadowed by luke leia han chewie.I would love to be surprised by abrams but I doubt it.In episode 7 the studio focused on fan service, and now after the dissapointment of TLJ i don't think they will do anything different. Absolutely nothing in the Star Wars universe sadder than anakins life. Everything he endured and went through. Doubted by the Jedi, fooled by sidious, lost everything and everyone he loved
Indeed, quite the tragedy, not just for Anakin, but for everyone's lives that were negatively effected as a consequence. How might things have turned out differently for everyone, if Anakin had never allowed himself to be seduced by the dark side?

1:44 the fact how Palpatine smiled at Vaders anger of his beloved wife being killed by the person she loved is so evil, it was part of his plan as well and that’s when he knew Darth Vader was born
After watching The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, this whole scene is a heartbreaking tragedy. Everything that Anakin believed in, and everything that Padmé and the Jedi Order fought, bled, and died for was all in vain. And they played right into Darth Sidious’ hands.

@@Ash-ty4qp Probably because it's such a horrible thing to do,is why it's repeatedly brought up. Even if Anakin had decided to join Palpatine as he did,he 100% could have spared the kids at least.Pretty sure Vader could have killed the adult jedi there and walked away, and Palpatine would have been none the wiser.
It's why Vader is so angry all the time and driven by the darkside, as well as looking like an old man in his 40s for how long the hatred consumed him.
It wasn’t Anakin that killed Padmé it was Palpatine who did it. After Anakin nearly burned to death on Mustafar, he used the the Force Power of Midi-Chlorian Manipulation to transfer Padmé’s life to save Anakin from dying until his Life Support Suit was online.
it makes more sense if anakin unconsciously transfered padmes life to himself, because that relates to the darth plagueis story, exept the opposite, vader could save himself but not the ones he loved
A little detail I never noticed at 1:21, Sidious backs away when Vader says "I couldn't have". You can see he's genuinely afraid that Vader is going to flip out about the fact the entire reason he turned to the Dark Side has been rendered null and void and turn on him. Then his evil grin when Vader screams "noooo" as it's confirmed that Vader's spirit is broken and he belongs to him now. Such a fantastic scene.
1:05 will never forget how hard i began to cry as as 5yo witnessing this, my hero, my parents trying to console me that it’s okay the movie is supposed to be sad, my personal anchor in Star Wars, begging for the only thing he needed 🥲🙃
The way their paths are divided from each other by fate, the way she dies at the same time that Vader is "born", at the same time that Anakin also "dies" in a way, is all so poetic and tragic. George is a genius.
Yes, Annakin was in disbelief that he killed her, he was right- He didn't. It was his actions that caused her heart to break, him turning to the dark side & killing younglings. She knew he was excited about the baby coming- He didn't know that they had twins, not until after he discovered that Luke has/ had a sister. That was unusual. He sensed Luke, but not Leia- not right away. 💔
Now that I think about it Vader did learn the power to cheat death but at the cost of padme's life. He drained the life from her to stay alive, normally this isn't possible but a similar thing was done by darth bane to take his fathers life. Plus factor in Anakin's connection to the force and his fixation with staying alive for her sake using his anger he literally used her to stay alive..
Personally, I think it was Sideous, and by a broader stretch, I think thats how he killed Plageous as well, to give himself the vitality and power of two sith
This is without a doubt, one of the most gut wrenching scenes in the series. The fact that he loved her so much and went through all of that, only to lose her, and the children she bore for him. Whats even more sinister, is the emperor, grimacing as he turns the knife telling Vader he killed her. His scream in anguish was a killer because he knew in that moment he lost everything, including his soul to the evil emperor. Just gut wrenching.
What's very clever about this is that while Sidious is undertaking his machinations to kill Padme to preserve/raise Vader, he doesen't realise the Light side machinations by the Whills or whoever have also designed that death also gives rise to a new life - in this case Luke and Leia. It's fascinating that just as the Jedi didn't see the Sith plot, not only was Sidious unaware of Luke and Leia until Luke destroyed the Death Star but in Roth most particularly he couldn't sense Luke around and it was Vader who sensed Luke was on the ship specifically.
The events leading up to this point is a reminder for me of how what we fear will appear. The whole reason Skywalker fell into darkness is because he feared the death of his wife. The actions born of that fear, lead to this moment. I have never seen such a powerful example of this concept anywhere else as of yet.
You thought you were saving your wife. You gave into your fear, not realizing that was the only action that would bring about your nightmares. All of a sudden, you wake up almost in a new body, out of a bad dream, only to realize you lost the person it was all for while you lost yourself. And the worst part, you did it under the manipulation of Satan himself. Now, not powerful enough for revenge… maybe never. You lean into his teachings after giving up hope. The only thing left is your fear and hatred… and hatred for yourself, the strongest kind, because your fear has come true… you are alone.
"The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly." - F. Scott Fitzgerald
What is amazing is that this is the one thing that the prequels gave us that the originals did not, Vader’s overwhelming anger. This is the first time we actually get to hear any raw emotion out of Vader . He is so angry, confused, in shock, so much so that he is stuttering. In the Original trilogy, we got Vader saying to Luke, “It is too late for me son”. That is not the same thing though. This scene lets us see Vader feel how he truly feels. It makes him feel that much more human.
Palpatines smile at 1:45 he accomplished wat he wanted, make anakin think turning 2 the darkside will save padme, but he made him kill her, and all the jedi at the temple were dead. With that smile, he doesnt even care about anakin, only making him do all his dirty work!! Grrrr hes so damn evil
He said at his mother's grave he wouldn't FAIL in losing someone HE LOVED. *But he failed, because it wasn't in HIS CONTROL. A mistake that HUMANITY still CAN'T UNDERSTAND.
Its only when he knows that Padme is dead does he truly become Vader. Up to that point all of the horrible stuff he had done was basically for her, and now knowing she was dead despite all his efforts now truly sends him over the edge and into darkness
I swear the vocal part in the ost is identical to the scene where Thulsa Doom kills Conan's mother in Conan the Barbarian... Seeing as how James earl Jones is also Darth Vader and kills Luke's mother, very big coincidence 🤔

Padme's Last Words: There's good in him......
Anakin's Last Words: You were right.....

Brilliant.
Yeah, it is that revelation that Anakin truly understands the treachery of the Dark Side. Because his self... will be all he'll ever have...
"the dark side is truly only capable of saving yourself, not others"

This shit will always get me, Anakin went through all of what he went through just to have her die and to have him stuck in the dark side as sidious' apprentice
In other words - She died from heartbreak because everything Anakin went through - breaking her heart and turning to evil
George Lucas is brilliant. The exact moment after Padme dies, Darth Vader is being risen from surgery. Almost as if Anakin & Padme died together, by the evil of Darth Vader.

If Disney will ever pull a powerful scene like this one... it will redeem its sins. And it will have the fans respect.

No, he’s smiling at the power Vader is displaying. He knows he picked the best apprentice possible and is proud of him. In a sick, sith like way
It's so dumb. What if Anakin suddenly turned to him in that moment? Aaaaawkwaaaard. As if the most evil and powerful person in the universe would risk losing everything by smirking behind his pupil's back like that. People don't do that in real life. It's such poor writing + acting + directing. Even within one of the poorest scenes in the whole prequel trilogy. This is right up there with any Jar-Jar scene.

Whole body suffered extensive burns, limbs amputated, respiratory and digestive tracts possibly fried, all while entombed in the suit. The itch and phantom pain must be horrendous. They kept him alive in this state to manipulate his pain and anger into purpose for the Empire.

That was false if I remember right
That’s a theory dumbass it’s not canon
Padmé died from grief/depression. From Anakin’s betrayal and probably some mixed hormones from giving birth to twins
Yea, palps had to have done it. she was alive while he should have been dead

Obi wan, Yoda, anakin and padme had one of the saddest endings ever
Was thinking about this scene at work today for like 30 minutes . I shed a tear or two . " I ? - I couldn't have... SHE WAS ALIVE , I FELT IT" !!! 😥

Gives me chills everytime 1:42
InSidious smiling makes me angry 😡
Now that I think about it Vader did learn the power to cheat death but at the cost of padme's life. He drained the life from her to stay alive, normally this isn't possible but a similar thing was done by darth bane to take his fathers life. Plus factor in Anakin's connection to the force and his fixation with staying alive for her sake using his anger he literally used her to stay alive..
Personally, I think it was Sideous, and by a broader stretch, I think thats how he killed Plageous as well, to give himself the vitality and power of two sith
I only know just realized how tragic his response was, the only life that he detected from his dead wife was the life of his children
Hey didn’t you reply to a comment
This is much more relatable now that my mom had died. I screamed noooooo probably just as loud as vader when I found out.
