It’s speculated that Anakin did indeed die in this scene and Papa Palps siphoned the life force from Padmè and transferred it to Vader. This then gives the answer to why Padmè died without showing any since of being in a fatal state. That or Vader accidentally siphoned her life force whilst thinking about her. Either way hella fucking sad.
“Yes, master” That’s a broken man. A man who’s lost everything. His morals, his wife, his children, his best friend, his self respect, even his right to live without the aid of a metal suit. Those 2 words sum up that the most evil person in the galaxy was all he had left.
Ralph McQuarrie, one of the original concept artists did by accident. George Lucas tried to describe the villain to him and McQuarrie in thinking he would need some sort of suit to go from ship to ship, drew Vader having a breathing mask. It would become part of Darth Vader's final design as the suit was sculpted for David Prowse who played him.
He was hurt him , if he was worried about her he shouldn't tried to suffocate her, although pedme died because of terrible and those bloody words anakin told her.she had a worst die moment. But still love him
that damn smirk when he realizes he crushed all hope, all love, all joy and humanity from a human being's heart. Damn Palpatine so so fricking EVIL and he f-ing loves it.
You can see how scared he was in telling Vader his wife is dead. He only smiles once he realizes he can still control Vader because of how destroyed physically and emotionally Vader has become. Truly chilling and evil man.
STARKILLER15100 But he was alive again when he saved his son's life and then died in his arms; that was the day Darth Vader died and Anakin was himself again; even if it was for a short time...
One detail I just noticed but love is when Vader starts shaking with rage and horror, the Emperor backs away - unsure of how powerful he is. But once it becomes clear Vader’s power cannot touch him - and will never touch him - he laughs.
That's what the devil will do to you. Once you've sold your soul, he'll send you to Hell, let you be burned alive, and enslave you inside a metal coffin. Vader upheld his end of the bargain, but the Emperor cheated him. Palpatine had Vader right where he wanted him at that point, forever under his thumb.
@Schwanzus Longus Obi Wan and Padme were long gone by the time Palpatine arrived on Mustafar. Anakin's Force Choke combined with the trauma from labour killed her.
My father covered my eyes when the Anakin was being operated on when he took me to see Revenge of The Sith back in 2005. This was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw in theaters and I loved sharing the moment with my father. Now I find it somewhat poetic that my father got to see Darth Vader back in 1977 and we both got to see how Anakin became Darth Vader.

2:12 It’s horrifying that the heartbeat stops as the mask is attached to the suit. It suggests that Darth vader, at least his suit, really killed anakin
You know a design is timeless when it can still look as cool today as it looked the day it was first created. I feel that way about the original Robocop design too.
@@lafudge2929 not just obsolete, it was poorly built on purpose. The suit is tight and cumbersome and it weight him down as a punishment for not killing obi wan not to mention he was given synthetic skin to replace his charred flesh but it itch excessively that it it rotted of necrotic flesh
I believe that there was an inside joke in the creation of Robocop. If you remember as he was being created, he still had one good arm, and the guy in charge said "Lose the arm". I think that was a goof on The Six Million Dollar Man who still had one of his original arms. Even when I was a kid, I thought Steve Austin should have gotten two bionic arms to complete the package.
That scream was him doing something stupid that Vader never would have done. The prequels suck balls; yall were just too young to know any better. That “Nooooooo” got an audible laugh in the theater, especially after the first two prequels were so stupid.
The no at the end was iffy looking back, im just imagining if it was a scream of pain after finding out of padme's death, i think it wouldve been better
@@areallymeanperson And when it's a prequel it doesn't automatically make it bad. You can say whatever you want but it doesn't change the fact that it's the best movie so far. And if you read my comment you can see I wrote that it's because it's in this movie everything happens and starts. The republic starts, Darth Sidious is revealed by his true form, the jedis get killed and Darth Vader is born.
Watching this in the theater is something I will never forget. When Vader’s helmet was placed on him and then he took his first breaths, everyone cheered! It got even more loud and berserk once they saw him arise from the smoke and hear the voice of James Earl Jones! Truly an experience of a lifetime!
That's kinda the point though. Pain breeds anger, and anger leads to the dark side. This was Anakins first true step into the dark side besides what happened in the Clone Wars when Anakin was shown a vision then it was erased
There were a multiple moments in the comics, he regularly gave Vader gifts, even his own resort, a new mask that was actually haunted, and even gave him a speech trying to inspire him to keep on going. I mean he did also try to kill him at least once a week but whatever
1:06That moment, right there.NO Jedi has EVER touched Anakin like that.Sidious showed not only compassion, but actual concern about him.As a FATHER.And that's exactly what he was to Anakin.A father figure. Something no Jedi ever was to him,and what he desperately needed. No wonder he turned to the Dark Side. The Jedi lacked EMPATHY!
2:11 this is the first time I have heard Anakin whisper the words “Padme help me”. This genuinely shocked me and it makes this scene hurt just that much more.
@@nategreat0040 You can hear Anakin call out and whisper the words “Padme help me” just before the helmet closes over his face at the timestamp I gave. When he was burned, his lungs and throat were basically destroyed, so he can’t do more than roughly whisper. He has that voice box to amplify his voice, not just to sound cool lol. @@ryanmcgowan417 it's common knowledge among some that some of the most evil people in the world that commit the most hainess crimes on purpose or for pleasure...., are obessed!!!!! with draining energy from others. Food for thought
It just makes the scene absolutely perfect. It's like what if Jesus had given into Satan's temptations. He let himself believe the lie, and burnt it all to the ground. Fully enveloping himself in a Hell of his own making. And there's the consequence, himself maimed and burned, balancing on the razors edge of death. Yet the Emperor still came for him, and entombed him in this steel coffin and iron lung. Despite all that has transpired he still loves Padme, and he still wants to keep her from death. The very first thing he asks when he's able is if she's safe and alright. Now the Emperor finally binds Anakin's soul forever to the dark side, "It seems in your anger you killed her." And as much as Vader lashes out he can never touch his Emperor. Palpatine is all he has left, and Palpatine smiles in utter sadism. His servant, his Frankenstein born. Darkness has fallen upon the galaxy, evil itself has won and he revels in it.
@@herrmajor2310 Well stated, although in comics he does attack everything in that medical bay including Sidious, then Sidious hits him with lightning, essentially telling Vader “don’t bite the hand that feeds” and warns him to never touch him with the force again. Unfortunately, their terror would reign on until of course..Luke.
Now that I think about oit, Anakin's life was tragic AF. The man was a slave ever since birth, he lost his mother to some barbaric aliens, constantly got denied and shut down of his requests by the Jedi Order, couldn't even love, lost his Padawan, lost his Brother and Master, lost his kids, lost his wife and on top of that he had to go through this immensely painful surgery. It's really sad now that I think about it.
while not explicit, I believe that this was somewhat by design or used by Darth Sidius. Afterall, he needed the most powerful yet saltiest person he could find. He wanted to find someone who lost or in the verge of losing everything to take control of. And when they owe you or when they lost everything, thats when you step in and offer your hand.
I watched the original trilogy after prequel. As a little kid, I was terrified by fact that some stories could end tragically. Anakin was my beloved character and watching him turning into monster in Black suit was very hurting for me.
I watched the original triology when they came out.( yes I'm that old). Watched the phantom menace as a 28 year old.Thought it was poor ,boring too much dialogue not enough action.Put me off watching the other 2 prequels.Never watched even to this day. That Jar Jar Binks ( or whatever his name is) WTF!.Maybe I should watch the other 2 films apparently they are much better. This Scene looks pretty awesome to be honest.
@@lucaschapman2188 Many people criticize prequels for being too political, slow or boring. I think the phantom menace and the attack of the clones are less interesting than the revenge of the sith because the director was george lucas, who is one of the greatest screenwriters ever but is not doing well as a director. Many people also find dialogue boring. I personally loved the prequel trilogy, there are some fantastic characters! I really recommend you to watch the other two episodes (Revenge of the Sith is one of the best of the whole saga). I don't know if it might interest you, but I also recommend you to watch The Clone Wars, it is an animated TV series of 2008 on Disney +, it really delves into the characters that in the prequel movies seem like extras to us but who actually have beautiful stories. PS: there is also an animated film about the clone wars, also from 2008, in case you want to start watching the series I suggest you start with this one. Sorry for bad english :)
One of the most sad parts of this is that in the revenge of the sith novel Vader wanted to cry after he heard what happened to his wife but his body was so badly damaged that tears couldn't even come out of his eyes.
...I remember seeing this in theaters when it was released and the whole room cheered when he took that first iconic breath. It was something to remember.
3:40 You really see how sick and twisted Palpatine is here, Vader screaming in pain as his whole world is destroyed for nothing and Palpatine is just like "hehe sweet I have a new puppy all to myself."
Anakin* Whole life ruined in a blink of an eye, lost all the people he cared either dead or left him, in absolute agony, no limbs, etc Palpatine: "hehe nice"
3:35 The hard walking due to using robotic legs for the first time, these are the details that are there waiting for you to capture and that make these scenes epic.
Fun fact: In the novel, it explains that when Sidious told Vader he killed Padme, and Vader destroyed all the droids in rage, he actually wasn’t trying to destroy the droids. He was trying to kill Sidious for everything he had done but couldn’t as he wasn’t used to the suit, then he realised he didn’t even want to kill Sidious because Sidious was all he had left.
@@easypeezy03 it's like Anakin has already have palps at gunpoint but can't pull the trigger because palpatine knows he can't and won't dew it in the first place
Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker has to be one of the most tragic characters in cinema history. But what's even more tragic is how so many "fans" don't even appreciate his story.
***** Of course not. The prequels don't justify his actions but explain why his actions were what they were. I really like that picture online that shows how Anakin went through the exact path to the Dark Side that Yoda said he would: Ep 1- Fear Ep 2- Anger Ep 3- Hate Ep 4-Ep 6- Suffering
+Rosita Mariposita Exactly. He became the very thing he swore to destroy, which is a tragic thought by itself. It kinda makes it hard to watch Phantom Menace sometimes, seeing how innocent and good Anakin was as a boy, only to know where he'd eventually end up.
+Rosita Mariposita Anakin's curse was his attachment The Jedis were supposed to be like Buddhist monks in detachment. Attachment is what led to fear of loss.
+Raymond Nolan Scott I disagree.I'm sure all Padawans had attachments they had to overcome while training. Anakin's were surely no different from Obi Wan's. What caused him to fall was the manipulation of Palpatine. Anakin was too inexperienced to know the Dark Side was influencing him, and the Council was too focused on finding the mastermind behind the Separatist movement to see what was happening right under their noses. In my opinion, if Qui Gon had never died, Anakin would've never fallen away.
People must also remember how LONG this surgery took. It was minutes in the film, but DAYS in the novels. Vader was in surgery with 4th degree burns, missing limbs, no pain meds wide awake while nerves were secured and reattached pure agony, hate, and emotional pain created the true Vader. He became Lord Vader through that suffering, before that , he would have fought Palpatine and became something entirely different.
When you put it that way, it makes you wonder if the surgery even needed to last that long, or was it just another one of the Emperor's sick twists to further his agenda and make sure there was no turning back for Anakin.
@@JudgeBane At least his eyes did not melted. I think one book or comic mentioned Vader was unable to enjoy food or something like that. That means every one of his five senses except his vision was damaged in some way, that's pretty wizard.
One detail that isn't mentioned enough is the light shining on Anakin once he's in the suit. The light symbolises his love for Padme, despite having fallen so far to the dark side, his love for her keeps him in the light. But when Palpatine lies to him, saying that he killed his own beloved, in his grief and anguish, he steps out of the light, the last good thing in his life at that point. With the grief of believing he killed her, he now had no reason to return to the light side. This marks the end of his fall to the dark side.
yea you ca hear the relief in his voice when he says "hes still alive" but with a but of shock. Not relief cuz he cares but because he still has anakin at his command and he didnt have a contingency plan had anakin failed to live up to the task. That's why in force unleashed for example hes so quick to ditch vader
Hm kind of I guess, he wanted to train raw anakin as his apprentice and got a weakened version, and I don't think he was that concerned considering he already got the benefit of using him to destroy the temple
@@ChillyBonesz honestly, this was the best deal palpatine could get. A walking weapon powerful enough to bring anyone else to their knees, but no longer powerful enough to overthrow him.
@@greedgod5827 This was the moment that Palpatine gave up on Rule of Two and instead opted for the “Rule of One” in which he would discover to secret to immortality and rule forever as the Emperor of the galaxy with a strong but vulnerable apprentice by his side to enforce his will upon his subjects. Palpatine would go on to train Vader in everything he knows, but Vader’s condition limits his potential use of that knowledge. This was done not to have Vader one day kill him and replace him, but so that he could be a more effective enforcer.
@@stumpyalex503 I don’t know when Palpatine gave up on the rule of two, but I believe it was the moment he found Vader’s burned body beside the lava. He realized that no one in the Galaxy could surpass Vader, but now Vader himself could no longer surpass him. So he opted to abandon the rule of two and instead create the “rule of one”.
+Trala Savage Or imagine the pain of thinking you caused the death of the love of your life, your child, losing your best friend, having your purpose corrupted, and coming to the realization that your dream of becoming the greatest Jedi and savior of all time, while living a prosperous life with all the people you love and care for will never happen all because of the choices you made. Then living with all that for the next 20 years. Which is worse? I guess it depends who you ask.
It is HORRIBLE the way with which he had to live with the armor constantly injecting him, and even when he takes it off in one of his specially designed pods, he still has to deal with the emotional darkness of killing his wife and child.
I will never forget seeing this in theaters. Anakin was my favorite and to see his spiral felt like a terrible dream. I was literally praying it wasn't true. When Vadar asks where Padme was I knew it was real and I felt totally sick to my stomach. I still remember that moment even when I rewatch it. Amazing storytelling.
I still remember this episode watching it in the movie theater. The audience went completely nuts at the moment when the mask got put on him. Everyone was screaming and yelling and whistling. I never saw such a reaction in movie theater.
And then he had a chance to actually save something which was his son and destroy the being that turned him to becoming bad and then had a nice moment with Luke before he died.
He was already Vader before that. The way I like to see it is like a rotting corpse. Anakin was the skin and tissue on the outside, and Vader was the bones beneath it. Vader was always inside Anakin. But as the dark side slowly poisoned and eventually killed Anakin, the dead flesh peeled away. Until all that remained of "Anakin" was a cold hollow skeleton, Vader.
"where is padme? is she safe is she alright?" "it seems in your anger, you killed her" this shows how sadistic Palpatine is. he's psychologically torturing Anakin. giving him the news that Padme is dead and the false belief that he killed her. and Anakin still see's him as a mentor and ally so he believes him, while he's smiling at his grief.
Same here! I saw this movie 11 years ago and it still produces the emotions I felt when I was only half-grown. "She was alive, I FELT IT" -OUCH! "rumbling turbulence" -WHOA! I wish he would take everything down! "Growling and Frankenstein's Monster-like movements" -I feel for him, that must be a tremendous loss. This is a grief that can make one *feel* as wretched as Vader has become physically. "NOOOOOOOO" -..... eh, I can overlook that bit, after all, the rest was awesome.... but man... what a letdown.
From the clone Wars all the way to the OT, it is the greatest story ever told, sure to remain for many many generations to come. My 5 year old watched all the three trilogies, and he doesn't remember the sequel too good, but has clear set emotions for the end of Clone wars
Palpatine, dabbling with the dark side too much , greatly disfigured his appearance. Anakin was so badly burnt and his lungs so badly damaged, he would need the suit and medical assistance for the rest of his life to stay alive. The dark side only aged Anakin Skywalker quickly, turned his eyes yellow and impaired his judgement and emotions. His drawing of the dark side, fuelled by his rage and anger also kept him alive The robots were working to rebuild Vader's damaged body and encase it within the suit whilst he was conscious. The constant pain Vader was experiencing made him angry, which in turn was strengthening his connection to the dark side. The way Palpatine was smiling as if to say "Anakin is finally mine".
@@oludotunjohnshowemimo434 What's worse is that in the film novelization, it's revealed that they were operating without ANY painkillers in order not to thin the midichlorians in Vader's blood. He felt every single stab in his burned body.
@Psi Hyperdrives did cut down on time a lot compared to standard space travel, but they still had their limits. Think of it like flying from the US to Asia. It’s much faster than taking a boat, but still takes several hours.
@Psi It does for planets close to each other, such as Tatooine and Geonosis. However, when you are traveling from Mustafar to Coruscant, you are traveling across half the galaxy, which would take much longer. Also, most hyperspace travels are made with multiple jumps to turn or avoid planets or asteroids. You would also have to figure in the rating of the hyperdrive as well, as different ratings have different capabilities. The Millennium Falcon’s class 0.5 hyperdrive was among the fastest, and thus it could travel much quicker than the class 1.0 of an X-Wing fighter. I believe the shuttle used to transport Anakin had a class 1.0 or 1.5, so the shuttle would be about 2 to 3 times slower in Hyperspace than the Millennium Falcon traveling the same distance. It basically boils down to how many jumps were made and the hyperdrive rating. My guess is about 2-3 days because the ship had a decent hyperdrive and the two planets were on opposite ends of the galaxy.
@Psi Probably through the dark side of the Force and his anger with Kenobi. There is also a good theory that Palpatine kept Anakin alive with Padme’s life force, which is why she died of such mysterious causes.
3:22 When I was a child, I thought these sounds were kind of strange, but now that I think about it, they sound like crying, when we're crying, we make strange sounds, now imagine losing everyone you know, having lost your father figure, having been betrayed by your best friend, almost murdered by him, and also receiving the news that his wife and children died, together with heavy armor stuck to his body, with wires attached, causing him extreme pain, and forcing his breathing to remain calm and passive, all without count the burns that don't allow him to cry, and but the microphone, these gentlemen, is the sound of a fallen angel crying.

Without the mask and life support stuff attached to Anakin(or aka Darth Vader) that was gonna be his actual outfit as a Sith Lord.
It’s brilliant cinema
Ralph McQuarrie, one of the original concept artists did by accident. George Lucas tried to describe the villain to him and McQuarrie in thinking he would need some sort of suit to go from ship to ship, drew Vader having a breathing mask. It would become part of Darth Vader's final design as the suit was sculpted for David Prowse who played him.

The end of Anakin Skywalker and the beginning of Darth Vader.

Voldemort:welcome to the club buddy
Palpatine, dabbling with the dark side too much , greatly disfigured his appearance.
Anakin was so badly burnt and his lungs so badly damaged, he would need the suit and medical assistance for the rest of his life to stay alive.
The dark side only aged Anakin Skywalker quickly, turned his eyes yellow and impaired his judgement and emotions.
His drawing of the dark side, fuelled by his rage and anger also kept him alive
The robots were working to rebuild Vader's damaged body and encase it within the suit whilst he was conscious.
The constant pain Vader was experiencing made him angry, which in turn was strengthening his connection to the dark side.
The way Palpatine was smiling as if to say "Anakin is finally mine".

An interesting theory is that Padme was temporarily force sensitive when she was pregnant with Luke and Leia, therefore Anakin and her could sense each other. It makes sense as Vader wonders what happened to her because he can't feel her anymore.
I nay be wrong, but... you're absolutely correct. That's why both Anakin and Padmé were crying prior to his decision of saving Palpatine from Mace Windu.
