    I have a question! Something I've been asking myself recently is "if this situation was never going to end, how would you make the most of it?"
    Basically I found myself getting caught in loops of wishful thinking - "I'll do this when I have more money/a different living situation/when I've lost weight" etc. Sometimes it'd be something like "I'll write my book once my desk is clean" and then I'd somehow avoid cleaning that desk for daaaays. So the question became "if the desk was never, ever going to be clean again, how would I cope with that? Would I still be able to write a book? Should I make a different goal, or can I work with this?" So I took my laptop with me outside and found a picnic table to work at. It's been surprisingly helpful in getting me to weed out the little things holding me back from big, important things.

      It’s also good to point out that you decided to take the EASY way to “make a board game” analogy. You eliminated the variables that were making the objective harder and chose the faster route. One thing I’ve noticed in my 2 years of sobriety is my fear of failure. This was /is a blind spot for me; sometimes we inadvertently sabotage ourselves from the beginning of a “project” and make it difficult on purpose. Then you can just excuse it away as ‘too hard’ and try something else… it’s a vicious cycle of “negative” reinforcement. Great comments and input!

    I prefer "what good thing did you draw from it DESPITE of it".
    My childhood abuse gave me trauma, anxiety and depression and my chronic illness isn't helping. And I resent the idea that any of my achievements in life, even empathy, are BECAUSE of it. I don't want my abusers or my sickness to get any credit in my sucesses. They are mine and mine alone and I fought teeth and nail to be the person that I am today.
    So ye, I am an comic author, an outgoing and empathic person, witty and resourceful and hardworking.... Despite everything that happened to me and I am proud of that. It's not the abuse that got me here, but myself.
    .... This is in no way meant as an attack though. I definitely like the first question anyways and if it helps to pull something positive from something negative I'm all for it.
    I mainly reacted that strongly because it's a constant in media and Storytelling. That you can be glad to have been through something bad because it makes you a better person. Basically a "be glad" this happened to you. As if there would always be this big payoff proportional to how shitty things were for you. And I've been thinking about that for a long while now

    • @nbucwa6621
      @nbucwa6621 4 года назад +38

      I agree. While I encourage any trauma victim (esp sexual trauma) to deal with that trauma in any way they need to in order to survive, I don't like the narrative of "this had to happen to me for me to become x". It implies sexual violence serves some kind of positives purpose in our society and needs to exist. You do not have to be violated in order to feel empathy, in order to learn boundaries or in order to become stronger.

      Yes. The question really is: DESPITE of it.
      And I totally agree with your last paragraph (that´s the right word?).
      On the other hand, I really like the 4. question: "What would the ideal me do?"
      It was fun, defining my worst and my best "me" and just now, it´s helping a lot getting my decisions right.

    • @BigHenFor
      @BigHenFor 3 года назад +5

      @@nbucwa6621 There is no purpose "out there" outside of you. Only within you. There is no meaning there either. It lies within you. The world is what it is, and you have to play the hand you are dealt. Thinking life has to mean something or has a purpose of itself denies reality. SARS-COV-2 knows nothing of meaning or purpose but does what it does. The Rose and the Stinging Nettle does the same thing despite the difference in meaning and value we as humans attribute to it. Similarly, it's ultimately pointless to attribute meaning and purpose to what people do, because we are more like the Rose and the Nettle than we suppose. Abusers abuse. But that you have been abused need not define who you are. We need not stop growing and evolving because of what happened in the past, and we need not identify with it. Acknowledge it, learn from it, heal from it, and keep on growing. To do so is radical acceptance of the nature of existence.
      Moreover, your feelings about something that happened in the past are not the best guide to what you should be doing now. If your feelings about the past are a problem it is because you are prioritising the past. "Priorities determine problems. If you're not satisfied with the problems you currently face in your life, then take a long, hard look at the priorities that put those problems there." - - Mark Manson
      Any problems you have demand a price to stay in your life. They take time, energy, and focus to manage now and in your future. If that price is intolerable then you can choose to stop paying the price. If being angry or resentful serves you in some way, then accept the price of being angry and resentful. For some that is intolerable, and they choose not to have those feelings in their life. They forgive. It's a decision everyone has to make for themselves, at a time and place of their choosing. No-one can dictate whether you should or should not. It needs to be said that Forgiveness is not tolerance of trauma or those that hurt people. It's not for them, it is for those who have been hurt, and it is a decision to stop hurting more. If this suffering is unnecessary, then why suffer? Does it make the boat go faster? If you answer "No", then it's time to let it go. It's that simple, and often that hard. We have to be honest with ourselves about the kudos anger and resentment gives us. But in reality, in holding on to these may be obscuring deeper problems, that are extracting a higher price to keep them.

    Great vid man, there's definitely a correlation between victims of trauma or abuse and being kind and wise in nature. I think it really helps us develop our empathy and more perspective. I'm a big advocate of "you are responsible for everything that happens to you". (in the sense that you're responsible for how you react and grow from it) A lot lot of people seem to misconstrue this statement with "everything that happens to you is your fault", (which couldn't be further from the truth).
    Love your work Cam, you've really been a big inspiration for me while I'm starting down the bus route of my career. It's awesome to get this kind of content from someone who's on the same wavelength, and who i feel i can relate to. Keep doing your thing bro, really does a lot for us :)

      i think that would be a healthier alternative to the "ideal me", because there is no such thing as an ideal person. and beating yourself up too much could do more bad than good, ultimately cause a lot more stress because you're not living a perfect and always productive life

    • @RaederlePhoenix
      @RaederlePhoenix 4 года назад +8

      @@graybirdynamnam Absolutely. I used to think in terms of "best self" a lot ten or so years ago, but I got into an unhealthy mindset where I drove myself insanely hard. ok, been subscribed for over a year.
    YOU have upgraded my life.
    Yea I’m 57, 2 kids with disabilities, wife had a bout with seizures, I had cancer, surgery, radiation, estrogen shots.. (worse than the cancer.. only way I coped is by buying shoes.) diagnosed with heart disease, and a Tia, (mini stroke). All under the warm embrace of a global pandemic. ( kids picture is my son.)
    but did a movie, book and song videos with a group of talented young adults, starting a bunch of new programs for kids, running 2 small companies with 8+ employees. Love making bread. And watch your videos as I’m making breakfast in the morning.
    I’m was the chaotic type a creative guy.. but appear to be harnessing some of the snakes and half of them going in one direction is really fun.
    So… in advance of you getting a kid/kids, getting older and taking care of someone…
    Can you do a video on dealing with interruptions?
    I have come to integrate an interruption as part of the creative process.. ie the universe making me step away.. and come back with another snake in charge…
    But would be interested on your take.
    And you can look back on it when you do have “more issues” to grapple with and see how ya did.
    Thank soft your help.
    I have forwarded your videos to friends, colleges, kids, and watch them again and again to reinforce good snake behavior.
    The 5 things and “the Ibis” video have been my favorites so far.
    If your by New Jersey, let me know.
    I’ll bake you some bread!

    Immediately reminded me of a book I just finished "One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way" by Robert Maurer. One of the things he discusses is the power of using small questions to stimulate the brain (the one caveat being they cannot be big scary questions). "If you repeat the question over the course of several days or weeks-or for however long it takes-the hippocampus (the part of the brain that stores information) will have no choice but to address it. And in its own way, on its own timetable, the brain will begin giving you answers."

    Thank you, Campbell Walker. I spent my morning (4-6am) binging on your channel because I was looking for content to help my 5-year-old daughter, Claire, deal with the frustration that she is not yet a master artist. Yesterday she had a meltdown that her drawing of Spyro the Dragon (from video games) didn’t turn out how she’d hoped. (Her drawing is actually really amazing). Maybe I need help, too; I’m frustrated that I am not a master parent.
    Her entire kindergarten schoolyear has been online because of COVID. I worry about kids who are being abused, sexually and otherwise, during lockdown. No amount of added SEL (social-emotional learning) can fix the reality that we are all painfully isolated and stressed out right now.
    I’ve been experimenting with gratitude and meaningful virtual connections. I know I need to start making my own videos about this, even if they are only 30%...❤️ You are inspirational!

    "What can I do about it" is a good question for working your way out of overwhelming emotional situations. Maybe it's something practical to fix the situation, maybe it's 'remove myself from the situation and calm down for a while', maybe something else. But it's a good prompt to get your brain to find /something/ to hold on to when it feels like you're drowning.

    I love this, with the exception of number 5 - which I think might fall into the "If you come from a background of debilitating guilt, this one may need to go into the "for the advanced crowd" category." I absolutely believe in personal responsibility. The trick here is being NOW and FUTURE focused because 'guilt' about the past (i.e. what canNOT be changed, only how it is perceived/accepted/reframed (return to question #1)) can be incredibly debilitating and counter-productive.
    This was GREAT! Thank you.

Lost my job? Well I guess it's time to pursue conventions and freelance art as hard as I can now that I have the time. My notes on the video if they're useful to anyone! Cam just makes such good points in all these video's that I felt the need to write them down!
    **The 5 Questions that Changed My Life**
    - your brain naturally answers questions you ask
    - why do I suck? -> find answers
    - why am I lovely? -> self-worth
    - Question 1: How is this the best thing that ever happened to me?
    - what are the worst things that happened to me and how is this good -> ability of empathy
    - what did it teach me?
    - fulfillment is the punchline
    - Question 2: What would this look like if it was easy?
    - “work is a hard thing to do: can’t avoid struggle”
    - make two lists: what do if it was hard? easy?
    - Question 3: will it make the boat go faster?
    - at every decision: having salad in stead of burger
    - will this make my movies better?
    - decision not easy: will jelling at the customer service guy make your movies better?
    - by not yelling you practise being patient and kind, helps
    - Question 4: what would the ideal me do?
    - tough love
    - three columns: everything I did today, bad you vs ideal you
    - do the action vote for bad you or good you. whoever wins is who you are becoming
    - Question 5: How is this my fault/responsibility?
    - my fault: disagreement at work: find your own blind spots: maybe they are smarter, I did something wrong
    - responsibility: for bad things that happened to you
    - my responsiblity to heal, go to therapy, strengthen brain, forgive abuser
    - blame yourself: to find how to improve, which problems you can change
    - NOT POWERLESS
    - blame game -> fix stuff -> self-respect

    Wow I really needed this advice. Especially the first one “how does this bad thing that happened improve me as person?” is something I’ve been needing to consider for a while...
    I also liked the idea of making a tally of the two versions of yourself you could be. It’s like those games where choices determine your outcome, except it’s real.
    Thanks for making this video

    as a guy who was also sexually abused and struggles with addiction, this means a lot. especially since im autistic, trans, not accepted by family, and a bit socially stunted, it means a lot to find men like you who i can look up to for mental health and just general skills for coping with life. im disabled and cant really leave my house, watching your videos feels productive lol
    also, i must add that im also making a board game and can vouch for that example lol. we're making it out of paper and then throwing it into a website thatll make it for us for a decent price. and thats if we cant make it ourselves easily (mostly depends on price and what we feel like doing.. shes a premed student, so busy as hell, and im a lazy cripple)

    Really, thank you for your amazing videos.

    My friend and i end up talking in metaphors a lot when we discuss mental health. We have a term for someone who pushes forward, through the murk and weeds, through the snapping claws of folks who don't believe in you, through the east currents and sunlight and back through the muck. Anyhow, you're a Big Fish and it's always delightful to find one!

    I started youtube today looking at tips to get me into drawing manga. On the side of the video I was watching was your "The drawing advice that changed my life" video. I enjoyed that one and the next up was "Advice for people who feel like their art isn't unique" That's definitely a struggle question being 31 years old and never feeling comfortable about showing people my art. So once again I was impressed with how true to me these videos were. Then this one popped up. Everyone has struggles and "stuff" going on in their lives and I am no exception... Now I don't understand how a 10 minute video could change my life like it just did. I started youtube procrastinating about drawing a dream I had and effectively ended up with more truth and self help than I ever got sitting for hours with a counselor. Thank you my friend. I am greatly looking forward to binge watching the rest of your insights into my soul.

Your articulation of thought, real-life examples form your own experiences, and practical suggestions for application to viewers’ lives have made this some of the best self-improvement content I’ve ever found on the internet. Plus, your willingness to be so open and vulnerable about your past in order to connect these practices to positive outcomes is nothing short of admirable, and awesome.

    For the past year (especially during quarantine) I've begun to realize a lot of my inner hesitations and anxieties really started when I was just a kid. It was natural back then to be careful and cut myself down/self-doubt more often than actually applying myself or going outside of my comfort zone; these mental habits of self-doubt and instant-dismissal have snowballed ever since then. Now I'm a young adult, and have been carefully trying to weed out (re-wire my brain, really) all those bad mental habits that cause doubt and insecurities which have limited my thoughts and inspirations for decades.

    I appreciate this video because it gives you questions that only you can have the answer for, rather than have life advice (or something round' that area) that can be viewed in way too many ways and would not have the same personal touch to it compared to an answer than comes from you and your mental state.
    Thank you my g. :)
