Been there too man. Caught my 1st felony at 17 and went to prison 2x over my heroin addiction and my running partner was my Dad. Luckily something snapped about 12yrs ago and I never looked back. Now I'm married with 3 kids and going back to school to learn how to run CNC mills so I can make knives. I'll make sure to send you one when I'm up and running.

I've lost multiple family members to addiction. One very recently. Mad respect for getting sober. It's NOT something everyone can do. A wise man once said, its not about what you did yesterday, its what you do tomorrow that counts. It's something we all struggle with. Thanks for sharing your story. Its a reminder that people can change and make a difference.👍

Bro, I had no idea until watching this video. That being said, I got mad respect for you as a result. As someone that can relate to your story I know exactly how hard it is to go down that path and and come out the other end a better person but more importantly how difficult it is to deal with that disgust with yourself or shame for the things you were once capable of and in turn guilty of as well. I'm sure you've come to learn this on your own but I'll say it just incase; although we can't take back the things we've done or make it up to the people we've hurt, we can better ourselves even if just a little tiny bit each day and by sharing our journey through self destruction with others may just save a life in the end. Even if it's only one life saved it still brings meaning to all those mistakes made instead of it all just being a path to nowhere. I'm gonna stop there before I start rambling but respect brother; keep fighting that good fight.

It's very easy to make one wrong decision. It's even easier to continue doing "bad" things RATHER than walk a higher path. That is what separates "good" from "bad". Humans make mistakes and bad decisions. BUT, what matters is that you woke up and seen the wrong path you were on and are now on a good path. Don't beat yourself up or dwell in the past. Keep on being the man you are today. It takes an incredible amount of strength and humility to admit your own shortcomings in life. That is the problem today- very few think they ever do anything wrong when indeed they have. You admitted it, you corrected the issues and everything is beautiful now. Jerad, forget the past. You've earned who you are now all on your own! You don't have to keep paying up for a debt you already paid in full. Always have my support man!

This hit very close to my life. I was down a bad path with friends that wss bad influences. Was addicted to pain killer's. It wss until i hit 25 when things clicked in my head and got cleaned up. After the cloudy mind was cleared i was so disgusted by the things ive done and so embarrassed and my family had to see all of that. I had to make a major change and it took 8 years but im married now. Buying a new house. Clean and a home body enjoying edc stuff and reading books. I still have flash backs of the horrifc things ive done but everyday i look at what ive fixed and built with my wife and that is the strength i find to push down the darkness. Thank you so much for telling your story. This will be added to my inner strength to keep pushing forward to try do much more good to make up for the bad.

Finding community is why the Friends of Bill W. groups work as well as they do. I understand that these groups don't work for everyone, but having a support group around you is necessary. Thank you for sharing.

Mad respect for being so forthright and transparent about all of this, I know it can’t be easy. It’s really commendable and I’m sure your dad would be super proud if he could see the man you’ve become

Just an avid viewer here! Your channel has taught me so much personally about the beauty of knife design / craft of sharpening, and this courageous and sincere post was next level and inspiring. The fact that you are so self-aware and open is a testament to how far you’ve come, aligning your outward actions with your internal standards and values. Addiction is no joke. I know firsthand, and can relate to the benefit of knifedom when carving new paths. Please continue to share your story and inspire others. You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
Wishing you and Kara the very best!

Wow. I was drawn to your channel because of your eloquence, intelligence and your depth of knowledge regarding knives. I’m a couple decades older than you and have come a long way in my life from rather rough beginnings in the Bronx. I don’t talk about it much because other professionals in my line of work (medicine) just come from a different place. Your brutal honesty is a testament to the human spirit and believe me it reflects your strength. There are a great many young men who, to varying degrees, have had a similar start and I hope they get to watch this video. Best of luck and keep up the outstanding work. ✌🏻

I could tell, I could tell you really do care about people. Thank you for sharing your story. IMHO, you should be proud of where you were and how far you've come. Like I said, I could tell you care about people. Keep up the great work on yourself, your family and your channel.

Respect. I've never hidden my f-ups in life.....after 66 years I'm not proud of some of my life choices but once I got sober felt it to be important to hopefully help others by sharing the lessons I learned. I DON'T preach, I merely share the fact that things can turn around once we get it thru our thick heads that a better life is possible. Rock on brother

Jared, thanks for sharing! I have watched a lot of your videos over the past couple years and have learned a lot from you. This is the 1st time I ever heard you share about your past and am grateful that you did. By sharing it, it becomes less powerful over your life today, which is truly a gift. I too am in recovery, mine from drug addiction and have worked step, found the God of my limited understanding and not used for a period of time.
Being alive today is a huge gift, I guess that's why they call it the present.
Thank you for sharing and for being the miracle you. Things have changed so very much!
Be blessed and thank you again,
    Jeff
