The NDP 2010 theme song 'Song For Singapore' sung by Corrinne May was a very touching and emotional National Day song for me. Cos the NDP in 2010 was held at the same time the YOG happened as well
It's interesting because my parents (neutral listeners) listened to this track on TV (not recognising it was Corrine May), and utterly disliked it, saying "the singing was horrible". But at another time earlier, they listened to one of COorrine May's actual album tracks and live performances on TV, and they said, "wow, very good". As such, I'm sure certain opinions about how this song "didn't hit the mark", is likely to be valid somewhat. Re-looking at this, the premise on the "why" fell short.

Singapore is one of the most peaceful countries in the world, with harmony and freedom. ALL countries in the world impose arbitrary limits on "free speech". If not, chaos will result. The difference is just where they draw this line (shouting fire in a cinema? leaking international spy secrets?) If you don't like where the line is drawn here, you are also FREE to leave the country, or try to slowly change it through legislation. You are not imprisoned or helpless in any sense of the word.

It may be too much of using just a convenient rock mixolydian chord sequence (as she runs the vocal line down in parallel along he descending set of chords by full steps (I- b7...). Definitely not my fav Corrine May song, where I find, Kit chan's choices seem to be better focused more on the neutral aspect of "Home",while the premise of "singing a song for..." is rather dominant in a forced patriotism sort of way, coupled with rock-style I-b7 rock which doesn't fit entirely, anyway .
By the way, article 3 of UN human rights is in conflict to fully free speech. When does someone's "free speech" cross into someone's security/life/liberty? See guns in US. Speech always has impact on someone. And if your speech incites hate crimes, wars, racial conflicts, then YOU are the one responsible. YOU, with adult faculty of mind and understanding of basic human nature and laws governing different countries, are the hateful monster for stirring trouble and giving rise to such incidents.
Human rights were thought up by...humans. Who can be wrong. Just because they work for large countries which can bully their way through the world with its military might and "shock and awe" tactics (war is an extreme violation of human rights, by the way. You don't need any "guidelines" to see this), doesn't mean it will work for a tiny country trying to survive against all odds. You think you'd still be ALIVE for speaking this way if Singapore were really like N. Korea or Nazi Germany?
This song that when I first heard it, well it is good, but didn't capture me. I had never watched any NDPs since 2008 because the songs are no longer meaningful, for me that is. This song is okay. Not above good, at the least above average. I give credit to her singing it beautifully.
