I know I watched this 10 months ago. You were missing a strap for the black bag. Try looking on e bay coach and accessories.. I have no idea if you kept this bag but there are several straps that are the correct strap. Many other to match other coach bags. Hope you get this. I have this bag. I believe this was called the stewardess bag. Also came in brown and navy.
This is remarkable and I thank you for posting it! I’m a flight attendant and had a coach bag that I bought sometime in the late 80s early 90s. I know I bought it from Nordstrom so it is authentic but it has definitely seen better days. I almost sold it on Poshmark fora few bucks but now I’m going to clean it up and keep it. Thank you so much again. This is brilliant!
OK second time I’m listening, and I have mine soaking in the tub downstairs in the basement and it has some funky smell. I traveled around the world with it and it was only me, but I had no idea it could maintain such a stink. 😝
I’ve used leather dye after cleaning on areas with scuff marks. Leather dye is NOT a shoe polish. First I would clean the leather with Coach leather cleaner. Then I would apply the leather dye on all scuffed or worn areas. Before it was completely dry, I would use a microfiber cloth to blend it in with the surrounding leather. When the leather was completely dry, I’d apply the Coach moisturizer. A stiff toothbrush was all I needed for the inside. However, My purses were NEVER this bad. I would definitely clean and reshape them as shown in this video. Coach bags used to be much better than today. There was never a lining because it would wear out long before the bag ever did. Not true for the bags they make today!
Fiebings or Kiwi. You can buy these online and at lots of craft stores. Fiebings has a separate sponge like applicator with a thin wire handle. Kiwi dye has a sponge applicator on the top of the bottle. The dye is very thin like water. With Kiwi brand, you squeeze the bottle to get the dye to come out on the sponge. Don’t squeeze real hard. Microfiber cloths and old t-shirts work well for blending. Take your time and do one area at a time. The dye will permanently stain clothes, counters, carpet and other flooring.
Oh my God you have just opened up a new world for me , so glad i stumbled onto you channel ,i have to go back and watch all your videos on these bags. I will never pass up a trashed Coach bag ever I Promise.

Omgoddess! I've had a vintage Coach bag for 6-7 years! It's green with a handle on top and 3 compartments its missing the shoulder strap. My daughter sent me an amazon link for a guitar strap. I had no clue, just knew I love it. After watching your video i lookef in my office. I usually cary 2-3 bags at a time. My small bags fiy in my Coach Diaper bag. Thank you so much! I know this is old, but I was looking for which shoe polish to use on my vintage Beekman briefcase. You saved my bag from destruction!
Just bought a vintage Coach 9145 and a vintage Fossil Preston…the leather is AMAZING!! Can’t wait to start. My inspiration came from your video so thank you!
I have a black bag similar to the one you have that looked just as bad that had mold on the outside. I actually put it in my washer on the gentle/hand wash cycle, conditioned it with mink oil and it came out beautifully!
I restore these bags also, very high quality leather. You would love the bags I found today. I found (1) a open top briefcase and a note pad binder inside it, all vintage coach and a messenger bag with strap and a handle, they are beautiful and only paid $10 for them all. I did leave behind another one but I’ll probably go back tomorrow and get it. Awesome video too thank you
I also rehab vintage bags and i have gone online for a recipe to make diy leather care. Beeswax and other oils mixed together is one i use and make. Bees wax can be purchased at Walmart in the black hair products section for a little over a dollar. I also buff with a natural hair shoe brush. I think the lighter colored bag may have benefitted from some darker dye and that may have covered the darker spots before adding conditioner. In a pinch, even hand lotion has enough moisturizers in it to condition most leather. Saddle soap is another fairly inexpensive product to use. Great job and fantastic price on the black Coach bag.
Great video!! I LOVE COACH vintage that is. I bought 2 bags on ebay years ago intending to restore them but never did not knowing how. Now I will. Thanks!!❤
I love the vintage look so much better than new! You did a great job restoring them! A lot of people are afraid of getting leather wet but it truly is the best way to get them clean and reshaped. Also helps with leather shoes and boots that don’t fit your feet. My dad would tell me to wear them wet for a day and they’ll always fit perfectly 😆. A guitar strap, tooled leather belt or chain strap would be super cool!
Thank you! I’m a reseller and found my first ‘in the wild’ coach purse from 1995. I was SO excited but dreaded cleaning it up. Your tutorial was so simple any easy to follow. My beautiful brown Coach Willis in mahogany is in the drying process and looks absolutely fabulous! I haven’t even used a leather product on it yet but know it will look even better. I was sad that it didn’t have the long strap but it looks like they sell on eBay without it. I hope to have it up on eBay in a week or so! ~Thanks again Kaths keepsakes.
I just bought a vintage backpack coach, and it's quite distressed. I'll try to restore that bag just like you show to us. Thank you so much for making this video 😍😍
I just looked at it and the hardware is silver with some green on it now and a couple of the corners the leather is worn off. Any advice? Otherwise the purse just needs some reshaping and leather conditioning.
@@twinmommygenise you can actually remove the turnlock. Brasso will clean the hardware. If the corners are rubbed raw there little you can do other than leather dye to make them darker perhaps
Soooo funny I have the same brown bag. It was my mothers and I’m trying to restore it myself and found you! Yay! Absolutely perfect! Hahha your the first video I watched! It’s like meant to be hahhahhahha! ❤
OMG I have the dark brown to the cream bag. I used that bag so much when my kids were young. Unfortunately, the strap failed. I lovingly packed it away, now that I have seen this, I am going to get and have it take care of. I loved that bag that is why I never gave it away because of all the memories associated with my kids.
I would always vacuum the bags out and use a sticky roller before dunking. It helps prevent anything that's left in there bleeding dye onto a lighter bag or releasing odours once wet. Bick 4 is my favourite leather cleaner/moisturiser- I really don't recommend the current cleaner and conditioner coach sells ATM as the cleaner doesn't work and the conditioner has too much silicone in it.
Thank you so very much for your detailed and informative videos about purses and authenticity of them. You have really helped me to understand how coAch does their branding and what to look for. I think about all of the old coAch bags I’ve passed up and I am just sick, but I was able to go through my own collection of 7 purses and yippie, they are all real. I won’t pass up any old beat down leather bags again. 👛
@@RachelStrickland the woman I got the bag from did not treat the bag with care.. I have to stain/paint it a darker brown to conceal the spots. I’ll try this
Hey now, careful. To people of a certain age, vintage Coach does scream Coach and the newer fabric purses with all the “C’s” are less classic. I agree with your admiration for vintage and look forward to viewing more of your videos. Thanks for the great info and for saying it’s okay to alter a highly damaged purse. 👜
Rachel - I just acquired a classic 70s Bonnie Cashin Coach tote (kisslock on the side) I need to get its shape back and clean it. It’s got a slight smell as well. Would you clean it like in your video? Total submersion in water? The leather feels different than other vintage Coach - much more soft and buttery…
Oh my gosh a vintage Bonnie cashin!? I'm drooling. I bet you may have Striped satinninside that side kisslock. If so, it's vintage Satin and the danger would be in it shrinking possibly upon full submersion. Stuff the back with newspaper and see if that helps get the smell out. Leave it outside. For a few days if you can. I wish I could see the bag.
@@RachelStrickland well I’m worried now because the pocket with the kisslock isn’t lined at all. It’s leather. Not that rough leather but the same as the outside of the bag. Do you think it’s a fake? The hardware is brass, the zipper is Talon. The interior is like a super soft suede. The bag is brown. The seller said it’s mid 60s pre serial number. Bonnie Cashin Skinny Kisslock Tote. Stamped Coach Leatherware - made in New York City, USA. The creed is all in cap letters with the right amount of spacing. This sentence in the creed looks odd - It is made out of a completely natural glove tanned cowhide. I thought the “of a” part was odd. I can get my money back so your expert opinion is VERY MUCH appreciated!!
thank you for this awesome video I never knew how to clean a restore old vintage bags. I always see really cute old leather bags that I love but I just don't know how to clean them
👜Thank you for this instruction! My husband gave me a Prada bag for my birthday. After two years it's loosing its shape. I hesitated to try this without expert advice. Now I feel confident in caring for this beauty! 💗
I hope this technique helps. Use caution on any bag that isn't unlined leather like this, I've heard the lining on bags can shrink. I have used this with my own lined bags with success though. Good luck to you and your Prada!
Those bags deserve something fancier than a guitar strap. How about a lovely silk scarf, used as a handle? Or a gorgeous heavy silk grosgrain ribbon strap? Or if you have other Coach bags in the same colors, you might be able to share handles. I noticed that, before the soaking, the darker bag had some green tarnish on the brass zipper pull. Did the soaking remove that, as well, or did you have to use Brass cleaner on that? Thank You so much for a great video on the two restorations. I love to see the actual step by step detailed processes.
I so love the juxtaposition of two things that dont go together. Have you ever seen the coach bags of Debbie the Restorer? She does some incredible things. I love a good silk scarf on a bag so I'll throw around some fancy ideas as well. And thank you for watching and commenting. I'll try to remember to do an update in a future coach video. 🤩
@@RachelStrickland I think so...I could be wrong. I asked for advice about cleaning one of those fabric coach bags that had leather straps and sparked a debate between two ladies 😁 that term was brought up and I watched a few videos on it after that.
I just bought a similiar bag but without the turnlock in front. The plastic zipper inside is not moving easily. Do you have any tricks and tips to address that issue???😅😊
Hi, loved your how to video, I never would of thought, and I am ashamed to say I have just thrown some purses away because I thought their time was up. I even now wish I had tried this with a favorite pair of boots I had. On to my question though...I have a pink Coach that is both leather and fabric. I loved that purse, called it my "Divorce Purse," lol. It became looking a worse for wear, although no damage to it, no tears or deep scratches. Has definitely lost its shape. How would you advise cleaning it? Thanks in advance.
Help! If I have a brown bag with stains, how can I polish them out? Where can I get a leather dye? Someone commented shoe polish is not a dye. What shoukd I get?
Could this technique be used for the multicolor leather purse? I know you mentioned mixing the light and dark bag in the video was a no no. This is a dark brown and black, A Sheridan bag :). Just wondering if it would stain? meehh
Thanks Racheal great information. Nice job. I do have a question. I gave a goodwill coach backpack (after watching you clean that black bag. I could clean the handles.... any suggestions. Unable to attach photos
The one and only thing I would recommend is using Saphir leather conditioner and colored leather cream on these bags. As good as they turned out they would look almost new if you use Saphir because it is simply the best.
@@RachelStrickland Thanks for responding. Sometimes I see bags that are in good condition on the outside, but the leather is peeling inside. Do you think it could be fake? Do you think you should authenticate before cleaning? Another question… do you find it easy to remove mold from a suede bag?
Your videos are very informative! Thank you for the demonstrations. Can newer, lined leather Coach bags be washed and otherwise treated in the same way?
Thanks for watching! I HAVE done this to clean a satin lined coach bag and it worked beautifully. Beware, it is not advised by many folks though. Hand wash with gentle soap and air dry.
Terrific video, Rachel. Thank you. Do you ever use shoe polish to restore the colour on very worn bags? I was thinking of a coat of leather cream, then a final coat of polish, or, maybe polish first, then cream.
Please don't use show polish. It will ruin and degrade the bag over time. Leather dye is a much better option. If you have used polish try removing it with alcohol or acetone.
Hi, great and helpful content. Thank you. I mentioned the Coach bag I picked up at a yard sale last June. It is a light colored snake skin I believe. Would you use this same process to clean and condition it?
I have a black vintage bag similar to the one you used on the video. The edges of mine are faded. Will the conditioning help bring back the color ? Also, I was afraid the washing would take more color out and make the whole purse look more faded. The after of your restoration looks so dark- dies it retain that color over time?
I'm always impressed with how much soaking brings out a better color. Just moisturizing is going to help.qith a lot of that fade. The bags stay this way, yes! These are completely dry

Hello, do you have ideas how to clean other brand like Piero Guidi Lineabold bags with metal. I am just not sure if soaking in water ok for the type of material
Always try spot cleaning bags. If they are not unlined, you run the risk of shrinking the lining with this method. That being said, I did it once with a satin lined coach and it worked fine. Beware though!
Shoutout to this female reseller that uses the kitchen sink to clean shoes. LOL. In my defense - I don't have a laundry sink in this house! I have two Coach bags I need to clean and identify! Does this method work for patent leather? Thanks for the tips 👛
The biggest thing people are nervous about with those is that the lining could shrink. It's not advised, for that reason. That being said, I've cleaned lots of bags with linings this way. None of my linings shrank.
Saddle soap can be used to clean or condition. Some people condtion vintage leather when the seasons change. Keep the leather hydrated so it doesn't crack
I hope you guys never pass another trashed Vintage COACH bag again!

Thanks Lisa!
Contact Coach, to see if replacement straps are available...
👜 looked so good!!!
Thank you!
Amazing! Thank-you ❤
👛👜 Great information on where to find vintage handbags at trift shop cost.
You said hot water and I got scared. I've only seen anyone do a french dunk with lukewarm water. They turned out beautifully 😍
I guess it was warmish. Not hot enough to burn. French dunk! Thank you! Is that the term here?
@@RachelStrickland I think so...I could be wrong. I asked for advice about cleaning one of those fabric coach bags that had leather straps and sparked a debate between two ladies 😁 that term was brought up and I watched a few videos on it after that.
Oh nice. Did you discover a good way to clean the strap?
@@RachelStrickland no lol. I just threw it in the machine on delicate. All is well.
Awesome!
I just bought a similiar bag but without the turnlock in front.
The plastic zipper inside is not moving easily.
Do you have any tricks and tips to address that issue???😅😊
Absolutely. Try running a number 2 pencil on the zipper. Seriously. Just like you're coloring the zipper.
@@RachelStrickland Thank you for sharing❣️I will try it.
I use polish only but there are tons of leather dye options. Will the stains come out with this soaking method first,?
Just now watching this so👜👜👜
You're a rockstar
👛Can't wait to work on my purse!
Hi from NZ 👋🏻 LOVE these kind of videos TFS, have you done a Coach bag collection video? If not, would love to see one!🇳🇿💛
I have one can't wait!
Could this technique be used for the multicolor leather purse? I know you mentioned mixing the light and dark bag in the video was a no no. This is a dark brown and black, A Sheridan bag :). Just wondering if it would stain? meehh
Hmmm.... its always possible for the black dye to wind up on the brown leather...
Thanks Racheal great information. Nice job. I do have a question. I gave a goodwill coach backpack (after watching you clean that black bag. I could clean the handles.... any suggestions. Unable to attach photos
What material is the backpack and the straps
@@RachelStrickland it's vintage leather No9994. Can't get the handle cleaned. Thanks for your reply..
The one and only thing I would recommend is using Saphir leather conditioner and colored leather cream on these bags. As good as they turned out they would look almost new if you use Saphir because it is simply the best.
Thanks for the tip! I will absolutely look this up.
@@RachelStrickland You will not be disappointed with the results.
Hi Rachel! I love your videos 😊 Do you think it is possible to restore the leather on the inside of the bag? When the leather is peeling…
I would use a suede cleaner on the inside. Leather shouldn't peel though. Have you authenticated the bag?
I’ve gotten great deals on COACH vintage bags at estate sales. Are you going to add a black COACH strap to the retired black bag?
I am considering something colorful.
Great video! love vintage Coach Bag
Thank you!
👜Great video!!
Thank you

Wow! Great job!
Thank you
I found 3 of these bags and I have been able to authenticate two but one is throwing me for a loop! I need your expertise ❤

Hi Rachel! I don’t have a leather conditioner, can I use extra virgin coconut oil?
I mean, I use that on my face. Seems like it would be very gentle. Maybe try an inconspicuous area first
@@RachelStrickland No wonder you have BEAUTIFUL skin! Now I know your beauty secret!
Terrific video, Rachel. Thank you. Do you ever use shoe polish to restore the colour on very worn bags? I was thinking of a coat of leather cream, then a final coat of polish, or, maybe polish first, then cream.
I've never done that but it could be a great option! Or even a leather dye.
Can you send me a pic of it on instagram? ResellerRachelStrickland over there
I have a black vintage bag similar to the one you used on the video.
Can you tell us the softest coach material or a few styles tgat gave buttery soft leather?
I’m a new subscriber but I am binging ALL of your videos!! I love your personality and encouragement given in them all. Please continue the great work 👜

Why didn't you like the end?
Hello, do you have ideas how to clean other brand like Piero Guidi Lineabold bags with metal. I am just not sure if soaking in water ok for the type of material
Always try spot cleaning bags. If they are not unlined, you run the risk of shrinking the lining with this method. That being said, I did it once with a satin lined coach and it worked fine. Beware though!
@@RachelStrickland i appreciate it..thanku!
Shoutout to this female reseller that uses the kitchen sink to clean shoes. LOL. In my defense - I don't have a laundry sink in this house! I have two Coach bags I need to clean and identify! Does this method work for patent leather? Thanks for the tips 👛
I would not do this with patent leather. Send me pics if you need help.identifying them!
👜👛👝😖😂the pursed face showed up in the list too.
Hahaha I love it
👛👜 Nice! Thanks for sharing
great job, Rach
Thank you!
Can you clean a leather bag with a fabric lining the same way?
The biggest thing people are nervous about with those is that the lining could shrink. It's not advised, for that reason. That being said, I've cleaned lots of bags with linings this way. None of my linings shrank.
You mentioned saddle soap. When and how do you use it
Saddle soap can be used to clean or condition. Some people condtion vintage leather when the seasons change. Keep the leather hydrated so it doesn't crack
