  • After 2 weeks of sitting in the cold it was time to start the shaky Volvo 340 (Winner/343) again and take it for a little drive.
This model is a 1.4l petrol engine with a 4-speed manual gearbox from 1983.
The carburetor idle is not set properly which makes the "truttenschudder" extra shaky.

Indeed! They got Renault engines when Volvo took over DAF around 1980.

How long does it usually take to start on a freezing cold winter morning when it hasn't been used for several days?

Couple of seconds, sadly had to get rid of it by now

Mine started in seconds at -10 even with 100,000 miles covered in 4 years. Renault engine was a pain but regular and cheap maintenance kept it good. Your volvo sounds worse than a diesel. Rebuild time. I remember mine fondly and they where so much better than the Peugeot GM or ford from that time. That was until the 405 came out and I got one those, granted the interior was cheap and cheerful but feather bed ride and amazing handling. I still miss my 340 but couldn't run 2 cars even though I wanted to keep it forever. Almost 40 years later I still remember it. Even though my subaru outback is my favourite car, that little volvo was my true love.

Klopt.. Vrij kort na deze video kwam ik erachter dat de koppakking eraan was en de carburateur ook helemaal verstopt. Daarna had ik helaas geen geld meer voor het project dus is hij verkocht aan een andere liefhebber.

It all depends on the tune and how long it has been sitting for. If I drove my old -79 everyday it would always start in a second, but if I let it sit for 2-3 days it would start on the 3rd attempt. Had to sell my volvo 340 as it became too much of a hassle to own it and work on it i'm afraid.
I bought it after it had been standing still for many many years, almost 20. Started and ran, but needed some much needed service on basically everything. Had to refurbish the carb, gaskets, wiring, filters, radiator, starter, alternator and more. Managed to fix it up real good tho and in a couple of months I drove almost 4000km on it, and 90% of the time it ran perfect. A lot of the issues with it was actually just the carb being out of tune but once I figured out the weber it ran so good I fell in love with it. Also low mileage (80k km) and the engine was in pristine condition. Changed the clutch and exhaust as well and it just got better and better. I really fucking loved the car and everytime I was cruising in it I felt so happy because it was just so comfy and smooth, one of the best cars I've ever owned in terms of handling. I really wanted to keep it and keep daily driving it but reality hit me and I couldn't keep it, and I don't have enough space for 2 cars, let alone one.
The CV joint started knocking and grinding and I searched for replacement parts everywhere but I couldn't find anything. These aren't even in the scrap yards anymore because everyone who owns a 340 instantly goes there to buy them for spare parts. I could also only begin to imagine the nightmare if the transaxle or any other specific mk1 parts needed replacement. God I wish these cars sold better so more spare parts were out there on the market.
Funny part was how everyone talked shit about the car, and how I was always repairing it. But let me tell you, the only things that needed replacement were things that degrade over time such as gaskets and the such, the rest was in pristine condition.

The Renault engine used in these rare Volvos are awesome! They can go up to 200k miles without problems if properly maintained. In Brazil we have this engine on a LOT, i mean, A LOT of cars, and it's indestructible, reliable and echonomical!

The Volvo -Renault deal should have sailed through. Renault moved on to modernize from Cleon -Fonte engine to Energy engine. Volvo missed on this on allowing Ford to make cars on their behalf. Let's revert to the initial deal.

Vervelende duiven houden ook totaal geen rekening met het feit dat je nog met een koude motor rijdt.
