Intro drawing by Ashley Anderson: pressstarttobe...
After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

夢風船 meaning "dream balloon", presumably the original concept was Mickey Mouse taking his balloon through various dream worlds.
Perhaps, although a lot of Japanese games seem to throw in the world 'dream' for seemingly no reason.
There is something because at once point Minnie is asleep and they can’t wake her.
I think the reason why this game was stripped of its Mickey Mouse license in North America was because Capcom had the video game license in that region for Nintendo systems, or something like that. I just know that was the reason why another Mickey Mouse game Kemko made for Super Famicom didn’t get released outside of Japan.
The crossover no one realized they wanted.
Maybe! There were those two Mickey educational games…
I think the cover would have turned me away nine times out of ten. Maybe would have picked it up when the rental shop had a multi rent deal. That definitely sucks because this looks like something worth a weekend rental!
Yeah this cover did them zero favors.
For the translation for the Mickey game title on the Nintendo Famicom:
Mickey Mouse 3 - Balloon Dream
I picked this up for $60 when it was worth $300+. The guy who sold it to me was mad at me that he sold it way under value.
Then WHY did hell sell it? To buy weed? Lol
@@teen_laqueefa It was at a Flea Market. He was a regular indoor seller and the next time I was there, he was upset. And use seller lightly because he just accumulates games, videos and barely sells anything.
Can you recommend it Edwin? Think ill buy a nice repro set possibly
@@Thomasmemoryscentral I would barely recommend it. I played through it when I first bought it, and it was okay. It didn’t blow me away, but I know it’s better than a lot of bad platformers for the NES.
Solid grab!
I'm from Poland, and here we never had official NES - only famiclone type system called Pegasus. A lot of obscure-late NES games were actually classics here, and Mickey Mouse version of this game was one of my favourites. Really decent platformer indeed, but yeah, not really that challenging.
Very cool!
“You need to wrap it up K!” nearly made me spit out my coffee 😂😂😂
Thank you thank you :)
Kid Klown by Kemco
Sitting here unemployed. Think it's safe to say, I'll be "checking this shit out".
I love and hate it! Unless it’s by choice ;)
That's funny dude it looks like an alright platformer but dude that cover art, I don't see any kids at the game store asking their parents for that
Yeah no way
I'm looking forward to the video covering the Kid Klown extended universe.
The video the klowns don’t want you to see!
I think that this is one of those games that gets better by replacing the character that starred in it initially. I haven't played the Mickey Mouse version, but all of the enemies and levels seem more tailored around someone like a clown than Mickey, especially that balloon attack. I mean, it's all so wacky and nonsensical, like it was made with Kid Klown in mind and they just added Mickey for the Japanese market. But it was the other way around? So odd.
I think they’re based on Mickey cartoons like the Jack and the Beanstalk?
@@BigOleWords The bosses were originally old Disney characters, but I think the run-of-mill enemies are basically the same.
The Klown sprite looks like thick Sonic wearing Mario's overalls
Hahaha I can’t unsee it!
Peter Venkman needs his own game. Come on now :)
Always ;)
"Night Mayor" sounds like a campy villain that Adam West Batman would have fought. 🤣🤣🤣
Which is interesting because the Simpsons actually did that with Krusty. It was just a quick throw away gag but it's exactly this.
Hahaha love it
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu I don't recall that episode. And sadly, I have seen them all. I remember the "Batussi" episode, and when Krusty was a batman villain, but I don't recall the "Night Mayor". ...I've wasted my life.
"Have you ANY idea how it feels to be a Kid Klown... living in a Man Klown's Night Mayor world?" -Kid Klown (probably)
Hahahaha
I read that in Bea Arthur's voice.
Today's captions were in French, with the adult words edited out. Very odd. Looks like my speed!
Whoops! I added some English if you’re French is too French :)
The Crazy Castle franchise is a deep deep rabbit hole and will drive anyone insane. The same series has Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, Roger Rabbit, Mickey Mouse, Ghostbusters, Hugo and possibly more consisting of sequels and spin offs that separate into other sequels and spin offs which vary by which region they were released in. It's crazy.
Yeah I remember I had no idea just how deep it went and when you really get into it, it really is insane. Then again that's how it went with licensed games back in the day. Like dragon power that was from an adapted Dragon Ball game. It's just weird to see stuff like that sometimes.
You beat me to the punch. Licensing rights made this a hard series to keep track off for collectors that wanted the whole series.
The wackiest thing is that most of the licensed characters have first and last names that start with the same letter: RR, BB, MM and WW. Even Kid Klown follows this pattern.
Whoa!
Right? Fascinating
This game really triggers my coulrophbia. $15,000 worth of therapy just went down the drain.
I have much interest in fighting clowns on the regular for the good of humanity
@@broncosbreaks "Broncos country let's ride"- 🤡
There’s a word of the day right there!
Excellent video as usual! I thought this game sucked, now I'm corrected.
Btw if you wanna se a smaller enemy then that egghatchet, check out the frogs in the (awesome) homebrew "Lizard".
Keep up the good work! /your biggest swedish fan
I’ve heard about Lizard, I’ll keep an eye out for tiny frogs.
this reads like a juice wrld title
I had to take this game off my kid's RG351P because the cover freaked them out so much.
Also, for whatever reason, I play the hell out of the Ghostbusters Gameboy game (Crazy Castle Part 4).
Haha poor buddy!
The ONLY good thing about taking away the Disney branding on this game is that you do NOT have to suffer through listening to "It's a Small World" in between levels. I get what they're going for, it's the "world map," so it makes sense but AIN'T NO ONE likes that song.
Oooof you’re totally right!
Was this another one of those games at the end of the NES life cycle that basically is just a colorized game boy game? It looks better than those shit sandwich games (ie Indiana Jones). But not by much.
I’d say it’s probably too complex for a Gameboy title, but who knows?!
Yo, this vid is hilarious. Definitely early topo chico vibes with your humor. Today's the big day, this vid has been THE only thing that has chilled me out and made me laugh recently. Thanks for everything, man, keep up the good work
Thank YOU Matt!
Kemco's Kid Klown. I've said it before but as bad as it may have been growing up with PAL games, at least we didn't get trash like this.
Haha it’s not THAT bad!
"Night Mayor"? Does Day Man know about this?
He definitely pays the troll toll
It's too bad that Capcom had the western license to Disney characters, requiring Kemco to go generic with it's hero. But really, Kid Klown is a victim of it's timing. the time for a cartoon licensed inoffensive platformer on the NES was 1987 through 1989.
When people think Micky Mouse and NES, they'll think the comparatively bad Micky Mousecapade and Adventures in the Magic Kingdom.
The same can be said of a lot of NES games released in 1992 and 1993. Megaman 6 should be considered one of the best NES games. Except, it was released so late that a lot of gamers never played it.
Yeah for sure, and this title is light years better than Mousecapade. Oh well.
@@BigOleWords History repeated itself with the Gameboy Color. GBC games released in 2000, and especially 2001 and 2002 went under a lot of people's radars and mirror late release NES games. Stuff like Lufia, Shantae, Metal Gear Solid Ghost Babel, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, Kirby Tilt 'n Tumble and more are VERY much like the twilight years of the NES where yeah, devs are pushing the hardware to crazy hights and these games should be remembered as all time classics. Yet relatively nobody played them and now they're generally hyper expensive.
as former owner of Mickey Mouse version, i do not have any nostalgic feelengs, so probably it would be forbidden anyway)
it is just too save, pale, blant, it needs total reskin as baloon knight versus satan, some minor changes to level design and it would be top 5 8bit horror game
For my accurate translation for the Mickey game title on the Famicom that Kemco released (in Japan): Mickey Mouse 3: The Dream Balloon.
Insane Clown posse vibes on this track
Not really a great way to introduce a so-called "company mascot" appearance wise, but I like the gameplay a lot
I don't think Kid Klown was in Kansas anymore after going after the Night Mayor and his acid trip world!
Night mayor world? Is this a game about local civics?!🤷🏻♂️
Yeah the game is pretty odd but its also offly charming. I find it pretty great!
Agreed!
i like this game a lot, finished it last year. Great channel by the way
Hey thanks!
I went to a video game store just today and found a copy of this game and it costs like 600 bucks! How rare IS it!?
Apparently that rare? I never thought of it as a big rare one but damn it really is!
This is probably the most obscure game I remember renting as a kid, along with Chiki Chiki Boys for the Genesis.
Cho Aniki is obsure to me
That’s a good one!
that was one convoluted past just for one game. i wonder how much revenue was generated from reskinning this one game and if it was even worth it in the end.
I doubt we'll ever know but my guess would be it absolutely did not. But I think it was more about it being at the end of the NES's life than anything else.
Lots of good stuff was missed because of that but plenty of stuff like this was also missed.
Honestly it's not awful but nothing of value was lost by it being lost in the shuffle.
Yeah it’s kind of a “why bother?” situation.
Kid Klown by Kemco
"I did nazi that coming"
Heyo!
It’s a Klassic!
The fish boss in 5:14 looks a lot like the mechanical fish in Bubble Man's stage from Mega Man 2
That's what I thought haha
Good call!
This game is pretty cool. Long live the nes !!! 🙂
Damn. You win again. I never played this one. But then again, I never claimed to have played every NES game.
Haha well neither have I and I own them all!
Seriously, the "Crazy Castle" series has so many reskins for so many regions it's legitimately hard to keep track of them all.
Right? They were just shelling it out to everyone .
So a Nes game predicted clown world ( Klown, sorry) decades ahead of time?😂
Awww shit you did it. Now maybe one day you'll play the other weird "K" game, Rockin' Kats
Someday soon!
Man. That had to have been a licensing issue. There's no way switching protags was a creative or marketing move.
Yeah for sure. No chooses a clown over anything.
Always heard about this game, had never actually seen it in action!
It’s a real mixed klown bag for sure
I used to jump into balloons when I was a kid, to get up on the roof of the house. But then one time, I woke up from that dream with a broken neck.
Hahaha
I use to have this game as a kid I found the game box for it recently but no game unfortunately
That box is worth a pretty penny at least!
It was Mickey Mouse - 3: The Fantastic adventures for me. IT was legit a bootleg with all changed sprites and shit. An actual difficult it was before I got the game mechanics. The music is also not bad. It brings back memories so hard. It was by the way 8 in 1 cartridge with Jurassic park, Felix the Cat, Totally Rad, Burai Fighter, Castle of Dragon, Rattle and Roll and BS Dracula. What a massive blast I had back of the days I owned that one.
That’s a solid 8-1!
5:03 isn’t letter A
It’s a SUS!!
Haha
Lol wait, So he is doing a hitler salute on the cover...hmmm close!
Haha
Kid clown in: No officer, i don't know where all those missing kids went.
Don’t check the krawl space!
This was the sort of game I would have played before I had a local Blockbuster and had to rent from the local mom and pop shop that had always had a limited, but bizarrely random selection of NES games available if only it had been released a few years earlier.
Definitely a weekend rental candidate.
I read "BS Dracula" with the other meaning...
I HAVE PLAYED THIS GAME BEFORE BUT IT WAS SKINNED A MICKEY MOUSE GAME
COOL
Kid Klown from Kansas is atleast not as bad as the Krusty Komedy Klassic at the Apollo Theater.
I actually had that scene in this video but zoomed in on the words instead. Definitely the inspiration for the joke ;)
Okay good I wasn't the only one that immediately went to that.
@@JohnDoe-wq5euKKK? That’s not good 😬
@@pepijn23
Precedes to dodge various items thrown by audience. 😆
5:25 The Night Mayor himself looks super crummy.
I definitely prefer the Horned King of Black Cauldron fame from the original Mickey Mouse 3 Famicom release.
What an interesting game! Had I seen it in stores, I'd have given it a hard pass.
Exactly!
You should do “Nes games with similar titles.” ie cobra mission, mission cobra, cobra command, cobra triangle, twin cobra, etc
Mission Cobra?!?

Add another K for Kemco!
So many Ks!
@@BigOleWords 4k’s in 4k
Weird to think that what is basically an officially-released rom hack spawned an entire series with sequels on SNES and even PS1.
Wish i could find this game for a good price..
Yeah it’s become stupid expensive unfortunately
I still need to add this game to my NES collection.
It’s a better game than I though but stupid pricey
That intro song. 😂😂😂
Night-mayor...pun or mistranslation?
Definitely an intentional, if cryptic, pun.
This looks cool, looking forward to giving it a go.
Worth a try for sure!
I like your intro that you have at the beginning of every video. Is that your voice?
It’s from Mr Show with Bob and David :)
@@BigOleWords is that a RUclips channel or a TV show ?
Fingers crossed for Kid Klown in Smash 6
A new Klown has appeared!
Lmao perfect description of game label
Thank you thank you :)

NES Game Klown Posse! Whoop, Whoop!
It's also Kemco's Kid Klown.
Indeed!
What is that song in your intro?
It's from Mr Show
I played the snes one had no idea this one existed this is better
The writing is top notch, these weird games are interesting and homedood looks like he listens to good music. Why is the algorithm such a cockwarmer to this channel?
Algorithm hates anyone that doesn't make a cuck face in their thumbnails.
I don't think I've ever heard of an algorithm being referred to as a cockwarmer. That's a new one! And thanks!
This game kicked up the 4d 3d 3d 3.

I had never heard of Kid Klown, I wonder if he knew those killer klowns from outer space 🤔 🤡
Kid Klown and the Killer Klowns from Kansas!
@@BigOleWords 😆😆😆
This looks like a decent game but it would have sold better if it had Mickey Mouse instead of some generic chubby clown kid.
Agreed!
not bad graphics for a silly kid game
True!

Such a weird bit of dialogue!
