Half-Life: Alyx is a 2020 virtual reality first-person shooter developed and published by Valve. It is considered by some publications to be the first true AAA VR game. Taking place before the events of Half-Life 2, players control Alyx Vance as she and her father Eli fight the occupying alien Combine. Игры

It might be becuase of capturing, the fov in vr is bigger
I'll wait for the non-vr mod or version
It's mostly because how VR captures video feed. I play HLA with subtitles because english isn't my primary language and it's easier for me to both read and hear rather than just hear. So subtitles are placed at the bottom of my FOV on Rift S, so I can read them but they don't take entire screen. And then I took a screenshot with subtitles and text was right in the center on the screenshot.

SO MANY noobs in the comments taking “forget about Freeman” personally and getting offended. It was a level name in the original game FFS.
Yeah I honestly thought everyone would understand the reference.
Unfortunately, we're not all boomers :^)
@@OptimusCrime1223 im not even 20 and i know where its from lol
@@Gggmanlives Why put a reference to a chapter in HL1 in the title of a game review that has no relation to HL1 aside from being its sequel? I think that's what is causing confusion.
@@Reloaded2111 They're literally in the same series of games. It's a reference to the first Half-Life.
About 30 minutes after I finished Half Life: Alyx I tried to lift a tin out of the fridge by flickiing my rist to try and use the gravity gloves... had to sit down and take a deep breath after that
I have been having that issue as well and its getting worse and worse.
Had that a bit as well, goes to show how brilliantly this game immerses you into the world.
I didn't actually do that but it did cross my mind to just try to grab items from afar, only to realize a second later that I'm in real life and I can't actually do that. It's crazy how immersive VR can be!
After going on a Resident Evil 4 and 5 binge years ago, I was going down my hallway and I forgot something in my room and tried to activate the quick 180 degree spin.
Back when I was in college, I tried to quick save by pressing the f5 button while I was writing an exam, but there was no f5 button on the table.
About the length: you have to keep in mind that we live in a time period where triple A games are expected to be really long so if the game was only 5 hours long you'd have people complaining that it's too short to be worth $60, even if it's the best 5 hours of their life.
Horricule I have my best 15hours in my vr life, thanks valve
It's not even 60 bucks!
@@Kaiwala yes it is

I really enjoyed the hacking minigames myself, but the connecting wires one did get a bit tedious towards the end.
The connecting wires one was incredible during the chapter Jeff but it did get old by the end
Did you notice how you could put your hand through the entire gate in that one puzzle that you need to turn a valve and pull a cabinet drawer out to keep the gate open in the Jeff chapter? I wonder if they intended it to be like that because that literally makes as much sense as Rayman
I absolutely despised the locker minigames since they were so annoying but the rest was very fun.
i enjoyed the wires a lot actually but given room size limitations it made it quite hard for them to flow naturally into game-play for me. it also suffered from the not so clear way they are used, i swear sometimes those power outlets would just have wires coming from them and sometimes i'd have to hack the outlet for me to be able to see them.
Same here, really liked the hacking, I thought that was a good use of the VR capabilities and something we haven't really seen in other games somehow.
Same for the wiring but I wish there was a bit less of them. They're clearly not as interesting.
Pay up for those Journey lyrics my Aussie friend.
My main issue with fighting the combine is that they are so few and make up for it by being massive bullet sponges, atleast on hard. It would be better if they had more and more agressive enemies with lower health than these bullet sponges.
ballin Yeah this is one of my biggest issues with the game. Although the final few chapters really relieved the issue. I hope if they make another VR game they won’t be designing it for new players and it’ll be much more high octane
I think they did it this way cause they expected this game to be the first VR game ever played for a lot of people. And rather than have people frustrated (like some reviewers are about the horror segments) they made the game easier.
I mean kinda makes more sense since not every player is mentally prepared for a high intensity shootout. Even some Half-Life veterans piss themselves just from a few combine, what more if it's the amount they normally throw in Half Life 2 lol
CyvycyMusic I’m really excited for the hammer editor cause maybe we can have shootouts with way more combine
@@jxk46 there's definitely going to be John Wick fans trying hard to efficiently kill as much combine as possible in that case
Half-life Alyx's ending is one of the only games to actually leave me speechless.
Same. I got honestly overwhelmed for a little bit. It's a sit down and ponder kind of thing.
I'm making an Episode 3 storyboard and I honestly liked Episode 2s cliffhanger better than Alyx
@@coltforceplayz5285 did you see the after credits scene?
@@Anonymous-73 yes
Gordon is shocked and is in silence just like you said
The length was probably important to ease characters into the combat before throwing more complex enemies at players. Valve talks about that in their interviews.
John Jekyllson I also think it was to stop vr haters from saying that it was just a short cash grab. I remember watching the angry joe reaction to the original trailer in November saying how it was only going to be like 3 hours at most since it’s vr
@@jojak0512 Angry Joe is trash anyways.
I think it ended up being too long anyway. HLA was my first VR experience, finished it yesterday. And honestly it felt so drawn out that I was kinda burned out by the end. Around halfway through the game I started hating the zombies since it felt like they're the only thing you fight, and they served zero challenge. The only reason for their existence was to drain your ammo that you collected while exploring. And I can count on one hand the amount of fights you have with combines. The game could have been amazing, the mechanics and polish are definitely there, but there is just not enough action. Shame.
Also the combat is slower to make sure not to overwhelm players, especially first time VR players
I agree. I played this as my first VR game and it took me a while to get the hang of things.
I bought a Valve Index for this. Absolutely no regrets whatsoever.
Same here. Except I was an idiot and scratched my lenses a bit with my glasses when playing beat saber. Valve is replacing it for me for free tho. Like, seriously? I'm quite amazed. And I'm buying the perscription lenses, not gonna risk it twice xD

@@MrGreghome yeah smn like the no man's sky redemption video
The game looks like a HL2 high-def mod and a boring one. Alyx never had a potential to be the main character in the series - maybe it is just a political and trendy thing to have a female protagonist in 2020? Anyways, I do not believe that VR gaming will never be mainstream or popular among traditional pc gamers. They have been trying to get VR working and appealing for the masses like the last 20 years. Without any decent or concrete results. Must be a disappointment for game developers and marketing people.

@ThatZaliaSGuy I don't think it's possible . Especially the controls . It's definitely not going to work .
Unless and until , someone decides to make a brand new game from scratch for non-vr players (a remake , like black Mesa)
the slow feel of the game that you complain about was made on purpose, valve wanted to optimize the game so anyone could play so they decided to make it calmer and slower than your average half-life game, but they sure as hell nailed the half life feel anyway. Also the AI of the combine get smarter as the difficulty increases.complaining about physically moving in a VR title is by far the dumbest thing to do.making hl:a vr only isn't something valve did because they don't care about fans, valve is about innovation so they tried their best to do something innovative for VR,they tried to recreate what hl2 was to the early 2000's gaming industry but to the present VR industry instead, and judging by what every VR player who has finished the game says, they succeeded.
Also I have a gtx 1070,an intel e5 cpu and a Rift S and was playing on high settings although the game told me that low settings were optimal for my setup yet the loading times never got as long as you told they are, sitting down on my bed and waiting a bit without getting out of my VR set was enough.(the game's downloaded on my harddisk)
Valve it's working now on Brain-Computer interface, so yeah, they're on that innovation thing more than anything.

Tdawg Johnsom lag has to do nothing with refrresh rate, your headset and the link cable may be the problem since I’ve seen youtube channels prove that the quest may have problems with higher quality games and that it may also have latency issues
Honestly, the ending is what makes the game so good, and confirms we are going to get HL3.

@One Eye King There isn't gonna be an Uncharted 5.
It would've been cool to see some beta enemies utilised in this game like the Hydra or Cremators, or Particle Storm, especially the latter.
Creators were intended by once again cut.
The Cremators are perfect for halflife alyx. Not only are they're super tall, imposing, and only really effective at closer ranges, but a major part of the game took place in a quarantine zone filled with dead bodies. It's thematically and technically perfect!
The only potential issue I see is the Cremator's flamethrower. Making really good video-game fire up close seems like it'd be incredibly challenging, especially with the game being in VR.
Loading times for me are fine.. Loading a save takes like 3 sec, loading a new level around 20 seg.. and i have it in a HDD NOT on a SSD.
10 second load times max with SSD on my system. There might be other dependencies however that vary those load times, but complaining about it in this video when it is clearly an end user issue makes no sense.
on an ssd it took like 2min of loading when i got into a new level, but reloading after death was like 10seconds
i have had no issues with loading times and framerates on a 2070 super, SSD and samsung odyssey+

this guys a complainer lol smh u can hear it in the tone of his voice too SMH LOL
itscard0man actually he brings up good points, I agree with quite a few and he does give the game praise where it is needed, unfortunately praise doesn’t help things progress. Complaining is better for improvement, valve themselves see that with the interview featuring gaben where he brings up the fact that he focuses on why artefact failed than why half life succeeded
I must agree. I have it installed on an M.2 SSD and starting the game and loading levels is only 10-15 seconds..
Which 2070 Super did you get? I have one also and I’m just curious
My main complaints with the game:
1) Not enough time spent in the actual city. It woud be cool to just stride through the city streets and admire all the eastern european architecture in the characteristic gloomy atmosphere. One of the things that HL2 nailed was the skybox and overall feel to the city. It feels like its about to rain for most the game, meanwhile HLA gets really colorful at times. Instead we just move through sewers, train stations and abandoned hotels for most of the game which kinda sucks to be honest. There was a potential to maybe walk around the city little bit more and experience the everyday life of a City 17 citizen before we get taken by the CP. Interact with some people, learn more about that girl we talk to in the beginning.
2) Slow gunplay. It really depends on the person but i feel like enemies are way too spongy, especially on harder difficulties. Zombies i can understand, but combine should really feel like an overwhealming force out to get you. We get none of that to be honest. Only some small 3-6 people groups that just stand there and ask to get shot in the face. They dont stategize, they dont try to lure you out of the cover with grenades (i mean they do but its not often and they mostly do it with manhacks). What they shoulve done is make enemies more aggresive and plentiful while also giving them less health. And for people who cant handle it make a difficulty setting that makes enemies dumber and slower.
3) Too many tedious "puzzles". Really, Alyx couldve done with a little less puzzles and more inventive combat scenarios. All of the puzzles are really cool first couple times but they get old REALLY fast. And its mostly because valve just overrelies on a set of like 3 puzzles for most of the game. Every time you want to make something work like an elevator you have to do the circuit connecting puzzle, every time you want to use the upgrade bench you have to do the star system connecting thing. There was potential for much more. Like that time you had to find the different colored keycards or move the pipe using a control panel. Those weresimple but very satisfying "puzzles the game couldve used more of. Maybe instead of forcing me to do a stupid fucking puzzle every time i want to open a lootcrate make me look for a special single use key? Make it so that there is a lot less keyes than those lootcrates to force the player to decide when is a good time to use the key they found? This would also partially solve another issue with the game.
4) Not enogh rewards for exploration. Really all there is is resin and ammo. And if youre a really big half-life fan, maybe some extra info about the world contained in every day items and news papers. Both resin and ammo are scattered all over the place and in plentiful enough supply you could beat the game without spending extra time to look for any of it. And resin is used to upgrade your guns, which is cool but i didnt feel any of the upgrades were all that impactful besides maybe the auto loader and extended mags for smg. But they sure look cool lol. The game shouldve introduced more stuff to look for. Like keycards that could open new optional areas or an occasional armory with lots of cool shit, maybe even extra upgrades. Stuff hidden in safes you have to scatter the einvironment to find codes for, little items hidden in envelopes you have to open like in that Hand Lab demo you get with the vive. There was a lot of potential here and I know for a fact that Valve could come up with stuff hundred times more interesting than me and they probably have but they just decided not to implement any of it.
5)No enemy variety. Its cool that they added more variety to the combine overwatch soldiers but beside them you only fight headcrab zombies and antlions. Theres nothing new, even thugh youre literally going through a xen infested part of the city. There was so much potential to see new xen fauna and aggresive flora we havent seen before but all we get is an electric "dog thing" which is pretty much a headcrab with a tail that can shoot electricity at you. Thats it. We dont even get to see a bullsquids and houndeyes for gods sake.

No one fucking asked for a Half-Life spin-off when we haven't even gotten the third game in the series after 16 years. What a joke.
@@AndroidVageta1 Wow. I mean I get the ire of being left waiting for something for a long time but in this instance there is fuck all reason to actually be complaining. Going back to pre-HL2 was actually completely necessary from a story perspective for Valve to retroactively expand the HL universe and plant seeds for the next installment, because Laidlaw just up and left and they were forced to move away from his vision for the story. The game is not a "spin-off" and even if you are unhappy or dissastified with Alyx, I really don't understand how you could say something like that. Hell I would argue thatyou're practically objectively wrong. It's a full length game with a mass amount of effort put behind it, if you've actually played or watched a playthrough of the game then that would not be lost on you at all. It's had just as much effort and time put into it as any mainline HL release and the story it tells is pertinent to the future of the franchise and the HL universe as a whole.
I feel like just seeing the effort and committment that Valve put into this game is enough for most people to soothe people's ire of having to wait for so long. I mean honestly you're the only person I've seen to take umbridge with this game at this level outside of the fact that it's VR only. Even in this review, Gmanlives had a substantial amount of praise to give to the game on top of some fair and level-headed criticism. But even if none of this is enough to sway your cycnical mind, you still have no fucking reason to be complaing. The end of the game literally sets up HL3 directly and Valve have pretty much confirmed that it's in active development because Alyx has been a success. So you're getting exactly what you fucking wanted...

But they should jump and run from grenades and hide in cover. Killing them should be a puzzle, and approaching it directly should be deadly, at least for the first 2/3 of the game.
Russell also ruins the tension and horror elements of the game most of the time. Aren't we done with the comedic companion characters from British colonies?
memespace regarding the comic relief from Russel- it was intentional. Gameinformer has a decent interview with Valve and the actually talk about how they wanted to ease the anxiety since it was VR

Ive it on my hybrid hdd and no long loading times. Certainly no gta5, go play a game of apex legends while you wait loading times.
wowowowowowowwowowowwowowowowowowowow great tip
Loading times for me were like 10 seconds when you change a level. Time to get a SSD, man! The game was absolutely fantastic from the first second to the last and the ending was incredible. I can't wait for more HL in VR, this was an amazing game.
"Put a grenade launcher on the Shotgun".
Grenade Launcher. + Shotgun.
Explosions and Shotgun.
100/10 best game ever.
Between this and R.E 3 remake coming out there's a ton of irony in games right now
@One Eye King So many of the older game franchises are coming back, whether with remakes, reboots, or full on sequels/prequals. That's the irony in it.
Just came across your channel, and already I'm greatly enjoying your style of reviewing games, with your blend of humour and very in-depth analysis of the games themselves. Keep it up!
Loading times are just a few seconds on my NVME SSD... Get with the times, man!
wtf load times are still bad on my ssd XD

It feels so weird to say “Half Life 3 confirmed” and like actually MEAN IT
Edit: I’m referring to the ending of this game, not this game itself
yes holy shit
This is not Half Life 3.
More like Half Life 1.99
mONEy the ending hints at half life 3

I'm using an Index. Load times are ~20 seconds.
I guess he doesn't have an SDD.
I don’t think the headset has much to do with load times
@@jojak0512 Probably not. I just noticed that he wasn't using Index Controllers, and I initially didn't assume that a gaming youtuber had a slower machine than I did.
Great review! Good to hear you didnt have issues with your Rift S. I wasnt so lucky with my own Rift S. I ended up with many cases where my flashlight hand gripping the bottom of my pistol glitched out a lot and then my flashlight lost focus on my target. Very annoying. Also a lot of missed "behind the head" reloads at times because it somehow didn't see my arm go back there. And the last one are my grenade/item throws. That never worked at the speed I was throwing so grenades blew me up a lot.
I saw a video of a man carrying inventory items in a box. You can take objects and put them in a box and actually carry it with you.
That alone is a 10/10 game. The physics in this game is actually impressive as hell.

I have a small question: can you move your finger with your Oculus VR or is it just doable with Valve Index only?
Im curious as the gun in the footage always seems off to the side and like your shotting from an angle. When your playing can you manually look down the ironsites to aim?
I just wish there was more enemy variety. This would’ve been the best game to include some of the half life 2 beta stuff.

"But this is still one of the most polished VR games you're ever going to experience." Uhh, I expect to experience a truckload of vastly more polished VR games in years to come.
Exactly.
Valve made this game to set the standard for AAA VR games coming forward, and they nailed it.
I wonder how well this game would play with the keyboard and mouse hack (setting +vr_strAPI "Emulated" to set launch options).
it would be garbage. The immersion is predicated on the virtual reality perspective.
you need the controllers to interact with the world. otherwise moving objects would, rather than being fun, be a task that is more laborious
itd be underwhelming, the game is built around vr not just a different control scheme

Obligatory qualifier needed, did you install the game on an SSD?
I never had the loading time issues, did you install it on an ssd? Levels took a maximum of 8 seconds for me.
While this game does look good, and sounds appealing to play. I won't be able to play this, or any other VR game, due to me being partially blind in my left eye.
Medic here. Whats wrong with your eye?
Damn sorry about that
You know, you could still play it. It'd be no different to how you see in real life surely? since it's one lens for each eye you'd just have another lens for your working eye.
You can still play it, but you wouldnt be getting the full 3d effect.
@@soysquid4312 Yeah, one of my eyes didn't develop completely, so I can't use it as well as the other.
The loadings last like 10 sec for me. Your drive must be saturated or half dead.
Or he still uses an HDD.
Is that huge combine soldier the "combine guard" from the half life 2 beta?
Could be considered it's succesor
What PC do you have because I had none of the issues you were talking about. I have Ryzen 7 3700 cpu and RTX 2060S and never seen a stutter and loadings take 15s at most. Also the thing about controls not being something game breaking, compared to Boneworks everything is muc hmore convenient and polished.
Also I don't feel like you can have the combat to puzzles ratio the other way around because it's just so exhausting in VR. I've played through entire Doom Eternal during weekend almost twice but playing HL:A for few hours I was so tired I had to take a brake even without constant action going on.
I still haven't played this game 😭
But you can’t because it’s not on disks
This is source engine 2 game, I look forward to trying to learn the new engine
considering the best current VR experience was developed in a version of an engine from like 2008 originally from 2002-3, i have to say the source engine is still beastly
12:19 What difficulty where you playing at? I played on hard and I found these fights very engaging and, well, hard.
What PC did you play on? I haven’t had extreme loading times. Maybe you recording made it load slowly?
I don't think any game could live up to the hype and expectations that this game had when it was anounced.
Svenzo1 Cyberpunk 2077?
SPOILER
It's a sequel and a prequel
It seems that it actually did. So far, i've only seen praises to the game.
Renee Peck cyberpunk is NOT going to live up to the hype are you joking 😂
jake p117 Calm down, lol. In what ways do you think it will fail to live up to expectations?
That manually writing messages part would be insane with Dark Souls type message leaving system.
5:08 the recording looking down bit and the loading time might just be on your end. Takes 20 seconds or less to load anything for me and my vr pov recordings are looking where Im looking. you might want to use steam VR mirror to get a better FOV capture. You can even chose which eye to mirror for videos.
Shouldn’t you be playing Doom?
Combine weapons disappear as soon as they're dropped... Why? I get that they're based on biometrics but that doesn't explain why they just pop out of existence the moment they hit the ground, even a bit of particles to show that the weapons are disintegrating would've been nice.
Also, there's a couple of commands in the console that sort of allow you to play the game without VR, seems that Valve expected people to want to "un-VR" the game, so they lightened the load a bit for prospectors, obviously, when the Non-VR mod comes is another debate entirely.
I'm curious as to what specs you are running? Apart from day one crashes, I had absolutely no stuttering or slow loading times. My PC isn't exactly the newest thing either. 1080ti and 7700k.
I have an i7, 16gb and a rtx 2070.
Idk whats with ur loading times. It loads for me in 10s or faster. You sure you installed it in SSD?
I almost got motion sickness by watching the footage of the video, i never actually had a chance to try VR but i'm kind of scared at some point i'm going to be left behind thanks to shitty genetics
You get used to it, my first session had me sick for the rest of the day after 30-45 minutes but after the third session I didn't notice any at all. You just have to train your brain for it. But the movement speed in Alyx is so slow it's likely not going to be much of an issue. It's most noticable when going at sprinting speed in something like Payday 2.
either you get used to it or you don't. it's all genetics unfortunately.
Just play with teleportation on instead of free roam if you can't handle the motion sickness. Either that or be prepared to take 15 minute breaks between sessions. I did that for Alien Isolation VR and got through it. (It's one of the worst VR experiences regarding motion sickness....the game throws you around everywhere and leaves you in small vents which increases the motion sickness effect)
@@HarshNerf you get used to it. You just do. It's like getting car sick or sea sick, you sit in whatever it is long enough and you'll be fine.
Getting slight motion sickness from the gameplay footage, odd because I can play Doom Eternal fine.
Can this game run without VR?? I do have acer predator helios 300 2018 model. And has VR ready.. just don't know what do i need for that..
What for a PC do you have? 2 Minutes? It need may be 20 seconds on mine! Or is it that I use SSD only?
“Nobody can see me play my visual novels” = the only real reason ppl use vpn on pc
Except the people who provide those VPN's to you can still see that shit.
I would love to play this, but spending $1500 on a VR headset and computer upgrade necessary to run it is a big ask.
i cant wait until vr setups come with either the necessary upgrades, or a standalone console and dont cost me half a years work saving up to buy
One could say that it's a.... *considerably large nudge...* to spend that much money for one game.
What are you loading the game off of to get 2 minute long load times? im running the game off a hard drive and it take 30-45 seconds tops to load a new level.
do u have the game on ssd ? cause my load times arent that long
That's quick, but I guess time works differently in Australia as well...

Game of the year?
nah, i agree with his sentiment its a good vr game not the best. but thats only because they expect people new to VR to play so they made it very safe, you fall like a feather etc. its not bad tho. as a half life game tho i had a BLAST. boneworks is a better VR game with half life element's. but tbe story here is amazing!

The way the loading time was describe have remind me how i felt when i was starting my 386sx pc when i was a kid
I’m sure the game is extremely good and the first seconds I saw of it were so incredible and magnificent. It is completely out of the ordinary and i’m sure a lot of people would play it, but there’s the problem, even if I can understand valve seeing so much potential in VR, what they need to understand is that not everybody has the possibility of buying such technology as a new oculus headset, and because of that, it kinda ruins the game for a lot of people like myself, knowing that I will probably never be able to play the game just because I can’t afford expensive tech. I do have a psvr but at this point, it has become weak( compared to others) and has less and less good games that you find now on platforms like steam, like probably hl: Alyx.
The point is to create more demand, which will eventually result in sales and/or cheaper alternatives
Right now medium grade headsets like regular oculus and vive may be expensive right now and I think valve understands that. They wanted to make a vr game because they saw the giant potential of vr and they saw that they could innovate it because that's what half life does. I think they knew not everyone could access vr right now but I think they just want everyone to be patient because vr prices will undoubtedly go down
That's the thing, Valve wasn't expecting a huge interested of this game (yep, the same people who though Artifact will do wonders). They didn't expect their new HeadSet to sell out thanks to the hype of this game. And yes, they know not everyone will buy their new headset, there is a reason every single VR headset are compatible with this game, so a 300 headset can work just as well as a 1000 dollars headset. But like any new tech of today, it will eventually be cheaper in the future (and hopefully prices will be a lot better once AMD also tries to put Nvidia on their place with their overpriced cards.)
At this rate, the PSVR is 4 years old, and it won't be long for PSVR2 to replace it. Thankfully expect some huge improvement on the controllers, tracking, Frame Rate, and image quality. Heck, it was the cheapest VR headset compare to Oculus and Valve, so it will be funny if they did it again for next gen.
I could not play HL2 when it first came out. And so did many other people. You do not have to buy a game at release. First day sales are overrated.
@@minisithunknown5568 This my friend is what I am referring to. I don't buy games at lunch either, so I usually wait for Triple AAA games or other games to be cheap for like 35 dollars or less.
The jittering. My god, the jittering. It's like seeing the world from inside Michael J. Fox's head.
It's kind of odd, since the walkthrough I seen were much much better. And doesn't suffer that down view angle too. He may have done something really badly in his setup.
A lot of those videos have stabilization work done in editing, given that your head's constantly moving around and having a fairly hefty set of electronics strapped to your face does factor in.
@@Wizuu0274 Stabilization is Built in spectator view, Valve talks about it a lot when talking about VR.
Ha. Lol
What's your computer's set up? Load times for the levels only lasted at most 60 seconds for me.

I had issues with the game in tight places (like inside a train car) in an area that would otherwise be considered outside. After walking out into a wider area it would settle down and play as intended. Idk if it was indecisive about rendering things in and out of existence or something, not sure how it works on that end.
