This video is awesome!! I rented what I thought was a gas car from Hertz. I didn't pay attention to the key, but when I arrived at my car, realized it was a Tesla model 3. I've never drove an EV before. This video showed me basic operations and what was also very helpful was the explanation of charging the vehicle. Thank you for this instructional video!!

Hertz wont allow to charge past 80% I charged at closest super charger to 80 then lost 5% driving to SFO rental return and they charged me 35$ charging fee. Plus they didn't have a charger with the car so I could not charge any where but the super chargers which were rare in Norther California. I contacted them and they said they don't plan on adding the charger and 5% less was still charging me a 35$. I can't see myself going with Hertz after this.

Yesterday, I got a Hertz TMY as my free rental when dropping off our TMY for new car warranty work for a tiny 3 mm paint defect at a local high end auto body repair centre in Toronto. Hertz brought the to the repair centre and had it ready when I dropped off ours. It was 97% charged. He told me to make sure it was 20% full when I came back. I did actually know the car was a Tesla until leaving the waiting room and walking to the car. Interestingly, it has Quebec plates (they love EVs too). It also had 15,000 KMs on it. The range was was 505 kms. Sadly, I don’t think I could get my profile on it. Elon said we would about a year ago. Maybe it’ll be in about two weeks more. PS The Hertz fellow offered me insurance for $27 a day. My VISA coverage can’t apply as it was free. I declined and check with my insurance broker who said I am covered because my car was in for repair. Check your insurance before you throw away money for insurance you don’t need.

John, excellent tutorial as always. When on business trips I’ve rented 2 - Model 3’s and 2 - Polestars at Hertz and Enterprise. Polestar costs less for obvious reasons. Lack of phone app is an impediment, but not bad enough to make me switch to an ICE vehicle. Beware, you may need a long extension cord for 120v charging. At Hertz headquarters in Florida, attendant claimed I must return EV with 70% battery or face a $35 penalty. Shocking, but needs confirmation.
Turo makes no economic sense unless cost is irrelevant. When you add Turo booking fee, rental cost far exceeds car rental companies. Another Turo weakness is you can’t ask owner questions such as charging adapters provided, drop off locations, options on vehicle, etc. prior to booking vehicle.

@@KenLahne2 After watching this video I rented from hertz and it was 50 a day. That was the same price as the cheapest compact car. What I learned was charging at a Tesla station was super easy and quick. If you put in your destination it tells you where and when to charge. I knew I was going to a rural area so had to make sure I had the charging kit. I’m glad I knew to ask for it because it was not in my car. The Tesla charging took about 20 minutes or so. The other one with the adapter said it would take 11 hours. 😩 I plugged in in the morning and walked around town had breakfast went to more shops had lunch and finally had enough to get back to the freeway. What I didn’t know was, originally it was charging to 80% on a normal trip with charging availability, no problem. You can mess around with the onscreen charging and move it to 100%. Sure it will take longer at Tesla station but it would have saved literal hours at this other one. Other than that it was a great experience and fun to drive.

Thanks for informative video. I rented a model 3 from hertz in CT. The staff was very helpful in explaining the car to us. Today I rented a Tesla from Hertz in Rhode Island. They didn't force me to pay any extras. If you are over 25 years old and are using a Visa or MasterCard you should be fine without any extras. Some might pressure you so they get more sales.

@@virginiabaez7047 i think you misunderstood him. all prices are always per DAY.
So 40$ per day is a huge price increase. If he says it's 80% of the rent fee per day. It means that out of 50$ that they ask per day. They want another 40$ only for the insurance.
It makes absolutely no sense at all. No matter how much he earns.

Your video is quite useful. However I want to let you know of a correction. You state that the Tesla only needs a 10-20% charge when returned to Hertz. That may be true in San Jose. However I contacted Hertz for my up coming rental at the Pittsburgh AIrport. It must be returned with an 80% charge to avoid additional charges. Since the charging slows substantially at 80%, that becomes a problem.

With the new 2024 Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive version, it uses LFP batteries which can be charged to 100%. But if the LFP batteries are also very slow to charge above 80%, then that sucks because you’re already limited to low mileage at 100% charge. If I could afford a new car in 2024, i’m gonna wait for the 2024 Model Y Juniper which allegedly will have the new CATL LFP battery that will have 500+ mile range.

Ok, I hate to be critical of this as there is lots of good information, but the one thing that we really needed to know when renting a Tesla is how to thoroughly use the navigation system. The author of this video approached a discussion on navigation twice in this video and then diverted into useless discussions on how to open the charging door by saying "open butthole" (twice in this video) or how to play fart noises in the car by using the toy box feature. What we really needed to know was how to get to the navigation screen, how to enter in an address and finally how to tell the car to stop at super chargers along the way. Perhaps the car will automatically tell you to stop at particular super chargers along the way, but we don't know that, we were too busy learning how to set the following distance behind another car when using cruise control (3 separate times in this video). Additionally, the charging adapter displayed for a brief second in this video will NOT work with Electrify America stations. That little adapter will only work with simple J1772 level-2 stations found at hotels, not DC fast charging stations. Great video otherwise, but you've really missed the mark on the one piece of subject material that really matters to somebody renting a Tesla for the first time.

Do you get charged idling fees if you are charging above 80%?

No, idle fee is when charging has reached your desired limit and no more power is going into your vehicle. Effectively, the charger is idling. You are blocking the stall so no one else can charge. There is a 5 minute grace period before penalty is triggered.
When not knowing exactly when I can return to stall, I set charge limit to 100% because reaching that takes a very long time.

absolutely loved renting a tesla. I showed up, added my key card after getting in, and the hotel charged for free.
Improvements would be allowing my phone profile to be added and all settings, game saves, and features follow the app.

Why on earth renting a Tesla. Renting cars should be fun. So, no Tesla. Rent something else that does make fun !

You’re in crack dude. I just rented a Tesla and that thing was fun as heck to drive. The instant torque was legit.
