it is most likely not heat just being discharged for a long period of causes the liquid inside the battery to be evaporated and swells up
None of my phones were kept unused or at a low discharged state at all.
I suspected my Note 9's battery had been expanding due to heat and long-term deterioration but this video confirmed it. My phone looks identical to yours before you replaced the battery. Time to replace mine!

well my whole family is using samsung phones for 10+ years never had swollen battery issue in any of the 8 samsung phones. btw its mentioned somewhere that when samsung phone is stored for long time without being charged causes its battery to expand.
That's true, but I was using the Note 9 quite regularly. The Note 8 was unused but it's fine🤨
@@TheHopelessGeek yea you were using it too heavily as u mentioned. i used just for general purpose calling, chatting, yt videos just very light tasks and pretty much everyone use it that way so battery swelling would be rare for such users. My laptop battery got swollen as i used it for heavy 3d rendering projects. it makes no sense that cpu and gpu gets so hot and battery is vulnerable to heat and they are placed right next to each other.

the issue seems to be closely related to heat. Samsung batteries may be a bit too sensitive to heat and all the creators running continuous antutu benchmarks and whatnot and then just leaving it dead cold for years may be causing it to swell. This is just my theory though. I have had 3 ipads, 7 samsung flagship smartphone 3 of them from before 2019 and the only those of them had swollen up which i didn’t really use alot(2) meaning that i did some heavy tasks and then left it for years. Ipads haven swollen though, cuz yk apple

I think if you leave your phone on full battery capacity or fully drained in a shelf for months or years, resulting a swollen battery. I have a J2 prime, J7 pro and samsung tablet (forgot the model but it was the same time as J2 prime was released) kept on my box inside a closet, only the samsung tablet received a swollen battery because it was fully drained with a broken usb port. The rest never had swollen batteries, boot them up and indicated 40% and 36% battery. Threw away the samsung tablet away from the risk of exploding and releasing toxic fumes.
I never kept it ununsed at max charge. It was being used almost regularly. Maybe that's why mine didn't expand as much.
I had such kind of battery expansion problem with Nokia keypad phones in olden days 😅
Yeah, smaller capacities tend to go bad faster. Also, those phones were likely used outdoors a lot.
I don’t think it has anything to do with heat. I repair phones, and I’ve seen hundreds of Samsung phones with swollen batteries but only a few iPhones. All of them have swollen due to over discharge.
I even have a few personal experiences. I got a note 8 brand new in September 2018, and the amoled broke in November so I stopped using it. I found it again in 2020 with a swollen battery. That phone was never hot or even barely warm, it was used for less than 2 months and stored in a cool environment for 2 years. Having the battery swell up during the time the phone is actually in use is extremely uncommon.
It might be uncommon, but that's the only way I saw it happen to me.
I've had the same issue with my iphone 4 when sorting out my Drawer...... Turns out you need to store batteries at around 50% charge and not drain it completely like I did.... Never had the issue after replacing the batyery and keeping it at 50%charge now
Yeah, I've heard that too. Apparently phone companies do that before packaging their devices.
In my case I had 2 phones battery swollen (Asus Zenphone max pro m1 and Vivo z1x) both batteries swell after 6-7 months I don't know if it is because of me or something else.
I used to charge Asus overnight, Vivo on the other hand was never charged overnight and I took extra care of that phone but nothing changed it still swell same as other.
Strange, so these batteries are quite unpredictable

It may a problem with glue on the back panel getting weak due to heat over time. You can fix it using some adhesive strips.
0:41 interesting cause my Note 9 has the same problem right now, you can kinda see the back panel coming off my phone like that, either way my Note 9 got so many issues tho Bixby button falling out and the Power button is getting close to falling out, screenburn, top speaker sounds awful, if you push middle of the screen you hear this plastic sound, either way it's awful never had a phone with so many issues at once
That's a lot of issues 😕 mine only needed the battery replacement
@@TheHopelessGeek it really is not even worth the money to get it fixed with all the issues better off getting a new phone lmao also something else I forgot to mention during 2021 it went into a boot loop after dying tried everything to fix it but only a factory reset helped. That's lucky or my phone is just cursed lol I never abused it, just regular usage.

Samsung and apple gives old standard lithium-ion batteries, but other manufacturers like oppo, vivo, OnePlus, Xiaomi they give more superior lithium polymer batteries. Li-po batteries doesn't react with heat. I'm using my Redmi note 4 for past 5-6 years. I played heavy games, recorded videos in sunlight, more or less my phone was heated pretty much in every scenario, but never faced any issue regarding battery till now, touchwood.
On the other hand my friends Samsung galaxy s21, just 1.5yrs old model got its battery swelled. The simple reason I can assume is the type of battery. Lithium ion batteries also doesn't support ultra fast charging like 65watt or 100 watt. That's way you can justify why apple and Samsung is not providing fast charging in their phones.
Ah, that makes sense with lack of ultra fast charging. I wonder why such premium companies don't provide better batteries in their expensive flagships. Is there any drawbacks to Li-Po?🤔
@@TheHopelessGeek It's a bit costly that's all. The tech giants are already charging more for everything, not much of a big deal for them. They'll pass on the cost to the end consumer.
I'll actually make a video discussing this. Based on what I found online, it seems that Li-ion batteries can provide much more power in a smaller form factor and have more charging cycle (lifespan) than lithium polymer batteries. Li-Po is great for faster charging speeds.
Different pages are saying different things, some are saying li-po batteries are having more lifespan tha li-ion,

Most websites I've read (like Android authority) suggest something similar, but lithium ion supposedly provides steadier voltages and doesn't need much maintenance to store. Lithium polymer seems to require specific storage conditions and tend to be thicker due to their bulkier case designs. Need to search more 🤔
