History of Fred C. Young and the Big-O: The lure changed CRANKBAIT FISHING forever!

- The Big-O changed crankbait fishing forever and introduced the "alphabet" era of shallow crankbaits. Designed by Fed C. Young while he was laid up at home recovering in a full body cast, Fred began to whittle out lures which he would give to his brother Odis "Big O" Young to field test. Before long the Big-O was a bass tournament secret and lure makers from around the country were searching for the elusive custom lure builder. Cotton Cordell found him first, and soon a plastic version of the Big-O was being sold across the United States. In its first year, over 1 million Big-Os were sold! Even today, this is a great shallow water crankbait for bass. Vintage fishing lure junkies should definitely check out the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club! It's a great organization that sponsors over a dozen conventions across the country annually! Thanks to Mark Ing for sharing his passion with the Bassin' Bud audience!

Well that was a treat. Seemed like it only lasted a few minutes even though it was possibly your longest video. I could listen to that kind of history for hours. Thank goodness we have folks like Mark who have a passion for this stuff and a passion for sharing their knowledge.
The best lure I have ever used in 61 years - FRED C. YOUNG’S BIG-O. Thanks Fred!
I found my first Big-O on the shores of Lake Lanier in 1973. Then found 2 more at a Bass-Pro Shop(before Outdoor World) for $2 each. Love this lure! I have caught more bass on the Big-O than any other lure. It works in saltwater too!
Doing a deep dive of the history of these old baits is amazing. It's one of the main reasons I subbed to this channel.
And guys like Mark are the reason I keep doing it!
I wasn't born in America and I just took up bass fishing last summer . No one else fishes in my family so I don't fully know the heritage of bass fishing in the US nor the longstanding traditions that come along with it ( Did kiss my first bass tho !!!!!) Thank you for your uploads, these are time capsules for us to enjoy. Now I can catch up on the history and not be a true neophyte. Will continue this beautiful fishing tradition with my two children. I've gotten my three nieces into fishing , two of which caught bass already and kissed them too lol my 4 year old daughter caught her first bass last summer and that made me buy a fishing reel and I became a novice know nothing bass angler . Now I can actually catch them after putting countless hours of fishing and not catching and practicing different techniques and learning to baitcast . God bless and thank you 😊
So glad you are enjoying the hobby! And your kids, too!!
Jason & I are so glad to see you're back, Chris! We missed you & your videos the past 2 weeks and we were hoping all was well. Thank you for this substantial exploration of the history of Fred C. Young's Big O design! The human stories behind the evolution of these lure designs are endlessly fascinating. Your deep dives are a real treat.
Thanks Adrienne! Been busy traveling, but got some good episodes in the hopper!
Thank You Chris an Mark!!! Glad to know this information is forever available for anyone who wants to learn the History of the Big O!!!!
I might have one or two of these around. This reminds me, I need to try them out
You know you do, Realistic!
A American Icon in Bass fishing Fred Young. The inventor of The Big 0. I caught a 25 pd Pike on a White Big 0 with the blue eyes. A fishing day I will never forget! The Fight was on! Shawn.
Great video! I love learning the history of the fishing products I used as a kid.
Crazy how little I knew about this bait!
Another Saturday, another great morning as I am fishing listening to your channel. Thank you friend. 😊
And dropped another fun one this morning!
Never met Fred Young but have spent time fox hunting with Odis. Their brother, Bill, was a great mentor of mine, before "mentor" was a thing. As a result, I've been a life long fisher of the Big-0.
Shout out to Mr.Mark Ing fir all that old school bait knowledge, that collection is very impressive 👍🏻
And I think he brought 1% of his collection to film...
Wow..... Thanks for that treat... I would not have ever known much about the history of that without seeing this episode..

Good job
Thanks, Lumpy!
I wish I could pick a custom color for every 100 baits I buy. 😂
I would be in such trouble!
idk why ur videos aren't showing up on my feed I even have bell icon selected to all and still not getting notified hopefully that changes cause I sometimes miss ur videos for over week sometimes.
Your not watching all the videos you skiped some months watching the videos thats why
@@michaelmcclenon6663 I've watched every video he has put out. That has nothin to do with it thats RUclips not sending the notifications out. This happens to plenty of other peoples channels. When RUclips isn't pushing their videos.
Yeah, the RUclips algorithm has been rougher than a rusted Zebco. But more every Saturday, we're right here! Like today...
