Since spending a few hours in the energetic zone that arises after hearing Angelina and your responses, a line came to me from a poem I wrote 25 years ago, while in the gorgeous years saturated with the life force of young, always developing children. Devoting everything I had/was/could become to their needs and well being, brought out images and words that I’d never known were in me. Young ones hold such pure power. I wanted to match it with what was most pure, loving and protective/encouraging in myself. In one called Be Ancestral, there was, Let your first cry and your final sigh define the voice you wield in the valley that hangs between… It was an encouragement to be true to oneself, brave, generous, loving. I am in love with Dyan and Cash doing Girl from the North Country. Roberts Flacks version of First Time is magnificent. Its unbelievable what Angelina put into it... exquisite!!!
Angelina really deserves to be recognised as one of the greatest performance. I thought your analysis was extremely good together with the examples you showed. Bob 10 and Johnny Cash are legends and great. There is another person that did A rendition of this song and that is Matt Cardle and he was on Britain’s got talent about 10 years ago and I think he won the whole show. His rendition was beautiful and may I respectfully ask you to listen to it if you haven’t already. Thank you very much for your reaction and I really enjoyed it.
I love the way Roberta Flack sung this song, and Angelina singing this is amazing , i love the other songs she has sung but Roberta is the Queen in this version.
Impressive analysis! thank you that’s a lot of research work and of course Angelina did her magic as usual. She makes a great song even greater. Appreciate what you’re doing and love for our angel. God bless and keep up. Stay safe
What a fascinating, educational video,,Thank you! Roberta Flack for me.. Surprised at the excellence of Celine Dion here… Angelina Jordan, magnificent..but I still will never approve of children singing such adult rated songs!
Tonight I discovered your reactions channel dedicated to Angelina Jordan's music. I saw her last year (?) on America's Got Talent and truly believed she would win. I am enthralled with her - her voice, her genuineness, and the depth of emotion she expresses in her voice, facial expression, and body language. She looks and sounds mature beyond her years, and yet at the same time innocent. While I Ioved Roberta Flack's version ever since it came out, it's Angelina "owns" the song, and I prefer her version over Flacks! In a very short time, Angelina Jordan has become my favorite singer! I'll be watching & listening as she grows and matures into an adult. I appreciated the historical background you provided for us. Thank you, Alan, for having this channel to feature Angelina Jordan. I subscribed and look forward to more from you and Angelina!
I honestly have never ever enjoyed anyone's reaction to a song as much as I have enjoyed yours, Alan. Marvelous, top-notch, fantastic, superb, and even those adjectives fall short. Sincere thanks.
Incredible how she clearly has claimed her legitimate place in the history of this iconic song. Reading the lyrics, at 11 or 12 years old, sitting in a living room, with just a (good) guitarist accompanying, probably first or second take. Just amazing vocal knowledge and skill.
Len google her song 6yr old Angelina Jordan "I Have Nothing" she blew it away while she read the lyrics at that age. That was the First time in the Studio. She truly is Amazing & a Gift from in my 👀 GOD
Nice video, Allan. I've been tearing up unashamedly listening to Angelina for 5 years now. I was a young man when Roberta Flack released this song. It moved me but never to tears. Only Angelina regularly gives my tear ducts a workout.
Alan, thank you very much for this history. I remember the Kingston Trio version and the Peter, Paul, and Mary version as well, but hadn’t known the evolution of those different styles. Roberta Flack’s version was stunning-a gem that really stood out in the musical wonderland of the late 60’s. What’s so amazing is not just how beautifully Angelina sings this, but that it seem totally ad hoc. She’s reading the lyrics and even messes up some of the lines, but it’s immaterial because, as always, I’m mesmerized by her interpretation and immersion into the song. How does an 11 year old just sit down and give us something so very different from Roberta Flack’s masterpiece? Yes, she’s heard and is recognizing Roberta’s version, but it’s all Angelina. And she does this across so many genres. My favorite singer of all time. The girl with a thousand voices…
The Peter Paul & Mary version was the first time I was introduced to this song and it moved me. As a good patriotic Canadian I must admit I'm more than a bit biased towards Gordon's version. I remember the Dylan and Cash and Cash's versions but they did not stir me. But then Roberta Flack's version was produced and it shook me to the core. No other version has compared to Ms. Flack's ... even Celine's ... of which I am obligated to love by birth right and by Canadian law. Now we have Angelina Jordan ... an 11-year old ... singing in english, her 3nd language ... singing "her" version along with an acoustic guitar ... so pure ... so honest. Dear Mr. Papier, Kudos!
Love how you show us the start of a creative Song and it's Growth into the Beauty of Angelina Jordans Version. Songs Filled with unimaginable Emotions Far from the Early Days of Many Covers. Oh I Truly Enjoy Her and How your reactions are filled with History
well said Lisa - the history is such a good reminder of my dim and distant youth 60+ years ago - i've been a fan since by chance catching Gloomy Sunday in 2014!
Alan, I have said over and over again that Angelina is a generational talent...truly extraordinary in her brilliant precocious genius. She gives goosebumps and brings tears to those who weren't ready for either. She understands music on an emotional molecular level. I appreciate your thorough work on this song...The setup was brilliant!
I can truthfully say I love your reaction channel. The history of knowing where it traveled from the beginning to Angelina Jordan. Thank you for this,💕
Being a child has some advantages: less inhibited, more vulnerable. I have always loved Roberta Flack's version. I didn’t think anyone could beat it. I am awestruck by Angelina's version. I thought it was more soulful and more beautiful than even Roberta's version.
Yes, a channel only for Angelina. But I love how you place her in history. There can be no doubt of her importance. She is a touch stone. For us and for and future generations. Someone rare and beautiful. A voice which brings to this broken world exactly the thing she hopes, a reminder to us all the of the power of love and joy.
I asked my wife to be if I could choose the music she walked down the aisle to. She was a bit nervous with what I might choose but Roberta Flack singing The First Time Ever I saw your face blew her away. This song will always hold a special place for us, a truly amazing song with incredible lyrics.
Thank you so much for comparing AJ’s version with the many versions that preceded her. The differences were enlightening. First, there is a girlish innocence to Angelina’s singing, which one often does not notice in Angelina’s songs because her voice is usually so low, smooth, and mature. There was a sense of first love that she delivered. Second, her song also has the clarity that the song sung by many others did not have. Even Roberta Flack’s version, which I was my favorite and I considered to be the clearest of all that went before her, was a little muddy by comparison. You can hear each nuance of her voice. Third, the simplicity of the accompanying guitar with no extra or unnecessary notes complimented the simple elegance of Angelina’s rendition. It would have been a perfect song in the Romeo & Juliet movie. It is the best to date.
Sorry Roberta Flack did the best version. Everytime I hear her sing it it gives me chill. But, don't hate Gordon Lightfoot's version. OK, Angelina made me cry. What a star ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Her young age adds to the innocense and sincerity! And I'm convinced all the possible emotions are latently there in a child! The way she has access to them and is able to express and convey them, really is a gift! This is apart from the wide range of musical, vocal and storytelling skills she has! Thanks for all the background information! And your dedication! ;-)
Thank you Alan for your thoughtful words regarding the history of this song and then tieing up everything with AJ's version of this classic. There were some amazing renditions along the way and I think it's worth noting that Roberta Flack's version did not reach the masses until it was used in Clint Eastwood's 1971 directorial debut "Play Misty for Me". I think that you noted that it was recorded in 1969 by Flack and released as a single in 1972. That timeline would seem to make total sense.
A wonderful tribute to this song Alan. I am so happy you focused on this song. It has to be in my top 10 favorites of hers. The first time ever I saw this video, I was absolutely floored. Such passion she has. I like all of her songs, but this, this one made me an absolute 100%, no turning back follower and supporter of Angelina's career. She is Music. She is soul. She is stunningly beautiful in all she is and does.
I use to go to a parking garage and put Roberta's version into my CD player. I would turn up the volume to the max and listen to the song as Roberta sang it. The sound would reverberate through the parking garage and it was fantastic to hear and the parking garage added to the sound.
You’re my first reaction channel I’ve ever commented on. I learn so much about the history of the song. I love it! I so appreciate your work. Wishing you millions of followings.
Alan, I have loved this song since Roberta released it, but I love Angelina's version even more. It's so tender & beautiful. I had no idea those other artists had covered it. Until recently, I wasn't aware how much she changed the lyrics in this, mostly for the better. I don't know whether they were purposeful changes or misread or possibly both. You should read the original lyrics as she sings this to see how they vary, it's fascinating!
@Keith Serafy Some were misread and some were missed. This reactor picked up on it and explained it very well: ruclips.net/video/1AdSMRdaJKQ/видео.html
Great result Alan, I love your analysis of the origins and evolution of the particular songs that Angelina chooses to transform them into her vision of music. Always very interesting and acute, thanks. ❤️ 😊 I love the "angelicized" versions of the classic songs she chooses, she truly leads you to listen to beautiful songs again that otherwise have almost been forgotten. ❤️
She is like no other artist that I have ever seen and heard . She completely made me fall in love to all the songs cover she did and OMG her original songs, what can I say other than I'm so glad to be alive in time of Angelina Jordan and hope to live long enough to see and hear more of her talent in years to come. Thank you Alan for another wonderful video and history of this song.
Alan, once again I learned plenty. Interesting history with this great song. 11 year old Angelina, as always, conveys tremendous emotion with her version and this was before she experienced the loss of her paternal grandfather or her good friend, Avicii.
She takes from Roberta's version for sure, but then the inflection quality she inherited from Billie Holiday is interspersed with that of Amy Winehouse, for in truth, that is and always will be the core of Angelina whenever she sings ballads. It's like those two giants of jazz become amalgamated into Angelina, for in my opinion they are the most unique jazz singers of all time with each tweaking the jazz genre in ways never done before. Angelina's brain then processes these in either a conscious or unconscious form of retention that spills out from her vocally. The end result is a totally new form of jazz that enters the human soul like no other singer......ever !
Well done, Alan! When you first mentioned Peter, Paul and Mary, Stewball was the first thing that came to my mind! Obscure may be an understatement, but it's my favorite PP&M song as well. I had no idea that the song had such a rich history. I think the only two versions I remember are Roberta and Celine. You said that Roberta Flack was insistent that the song should be very slow. Angelina took it down to a slower tempo than ever Roberta did. Somehow, as beautifully as Angelina sings it, this one makes me uncomfortable because of a single line in it. Even though Angelina changed a word in the line, it still feels wrong for a girl so young. Anyway, thanks for the history lesson.
Pretty hard to find good songs in her genres which are as innocent as you seem to think she should be. Perhaps you could suggest some suitable titles? And it's not like she exploits the inappropriate lyrics, she skips when she can and changes or muddles them otherwise. Her own originals are unimpeachable on that score.
@@lengould9262 Len, please understand that I'm not criticizing Angelina for singing it and I agree that she's not exploiting anything about it. It's just that the line, "The first time ever I lay with you" just feels out of place for an 11 year old girl. Yes, she changed it to "The first time ever I lay for you," but that really doesn't change it that much. She's done a wonderful job of manipulating lyrics in other songs to make them more appropriate, I guess I just wish she' could have done more on this one. As it is, it just stirs that protective instinct that so many of us feel for her.
Agree Gary. A lot of young singers are singing lyrics which are beyond their knowledge or experience I feel. They then sing them in an imitative fashion basing off they may have heard older singers doing with a song. I also do not deny Angelina’s capacity to feel.... we underestimate children’s emotional responses to things and events around and involving them. But singing can become more about “ performance” than true connection to a song’s lyrics or/and meaning. This song was written by a man for his love..... a very different context. Sometimes slowing down a song like this dies not make it anymore meaningful or special.... canverge on artifice. I think Roberta Flacks was slow enough. 🙂
Such a beautiful journey through the history of this song. For me Roberta's version was the true benchmark, until Angelina came along and reawakened the story. You missed out the glances at the end of the video, I have a feeling that grandma Mery had a few tears flowing at that point...
Egil does not know the song and gets totally lost. The amazing thing is to see Angelina not shaken nor hear her voice waiver. She waits and pulls Egil out of the embarrassing situation. At age 11, what a professional Angelina is!
Great video. Loved all the history behind the songs, the artists, and the genre changes. It was informative, educational, and just plain ole enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. Angelina is such a prodigy--her version is beautiful. Many of her covers are as good or better than the originals. In this instance, however, there is an achy, bluesy smoothness to Roberta's version that slices like a scalpel into your heart. Nothing like it. But aren't we lucky to have ALL these many diverse versions to enjoy?!
Roberta totally owns this song. It's the first song I ever heard her sing. And no one can top her. Her songs carried me through four years of college. She was all I listened to.
Thank you Alan for the time and energy to this musical history lesson. And the absolute proof of how really fabulous Angelina Jordan really is, even if only at the age of 11. Oh and many respects to the colorful words of Adriane's below about Angelina and your efforts for her.
I never knew so many had done this song , but the biggest surprise was that it was a Folk song . I love the way Angeline did this but there are 2 different men that covered this and I think they are incredible . Luke Evans does a great cover , I had never heard of him and was shocked to hear his cover . Then the other is Matt Cardle , he covered it on a singing competition show , The X Factor . Matt has a high voice for a man and he was great also . Alan , If you have not heard those 2 , you should check them out , they both show a lot of respect for Roberta's version , which I think will always be the best .
Can't believe you missed Englebert Humperdink. His version was the first I heard. It was on an album I had in the early 70's. It was beautiful and his voice was beautiful. Then when I heard Roberta Flack I was mesmerized. She took it to another level. IMO, no one comes close to those 2 versions.
Angelina in my opinion is the best person I ever heard of person I ever saw your face this girl you’re a master Arlington story tower. She puts the emotion of the song from her spirit to your spirit very moving. She is my favorite singer of all time, regardless of rage and 77.
Thankyou Alan for the beautiful video and explanations. I'm surprised so many artists have done this song. Knew only of Peter Paul & Mary and of course Jonny Cash. I cry 😭 when Angelina 😇 sings "Gloomy Sunday." Her innate understanding of life is what she gives us when she sings❣️
I always thought Roberta Flack's version was the best until I heard Angelina's version. How can an 11 year old girl do this? I found AJ a year ago and now she is my favorite singer of all time at 15 years old. What will she sound like at 30.Thank you.
God Almighty!
do girls voices break? it seems to me that Angelina's voice has lost something in recent years
@@davidseed2939
Nope :)
@@davidseed2939 No, her voice is beautiful and beguiling. The depth of the emotion you can hear in her voice is incredible, especially at her young age! I love her voice and her songs!
@@shirleygibbs7440 i agree with all that but i still find her voice purer and sweeter when she was younger.
I am in love with Dyan and Cash doing Girl from the North Country.
Roberts Flacks version of First Time is magnificent. Its unbelievable what Angelina put into it... exquisite!!!
Well Said
Angelina really deserves to be recognised as one of the greatest performance.
@Jacinto Gonzalez thank you for that information and the only person I could remember was Matt Cardle
Surprised at the excellence of Celine Dion here…
Angelina Jordan, magnificent..but I still will never approve of children singing such adult rated songs!
I think A jolly ba will be even better at this type of song when she has a couple years! But, she will be great.
Thank you for your kind words.
I really enjoy my RUclips hobby-and I believe it shows
It's simple not only is Angelina a modern-day Mozart she is a singing goddess

This is my all time favorite that she ever performed. Unbelievable
You don't ask for much, do you?
@@fatelamore I don't understand. ?
Wow, glad you and the rest of us got to feel and hear this amazing performance.
I called this the gold standard
Nice video, Allan. I've been tearing up unashamedly listening to Angelina for 5 years now. I was a young man when Roberta Flack released this song. It moved me but never to tears. Only Angelina regularly gives my tear ducts a workout.
I was 12-13 when I first heard Roberta sing it. I fell in love with this song and Roberta. So glad Angelina brought it back to life.
Excellentissime... merci beaucoup 🌺💝
What a gift!
Thanks for the beautiful history lesson of this amazing musical work. Angela is ageless. A true gift as much as the moon and the stars
I really appreciate your historical treatment of these popular contemporary songs. Thank you for your research.
Very beautiful.❤️
Love how you show us the start of a creative Song and it's Growth into the Beauty of Angelina Jordans Version. Songs Filled with unimaginable Emotions Far from the Early Days of Many Covers. Oh I Truly Enjoy Her and How your reactions are filled with History
Totally agree Lisa
well said Lisa - the history is such a good reminder of my dim and distant youth 60+ years ago - i've been a fan since by chance catching Gloomy Sunday in 2014!
Thank you for this,💕
Couldn't agree more with you about Gordon Lightfoot awesome singer. Now Angelina Jordan truly gifted singer great covers.
Roberta still has the best version
I asked my wife to be if I could choose the music she walked down the aisle to. She was a bit nervous with what I might choose but Roberta Flack singing The First Time Ever I saw your face blew her away. This song will always hold a special place for us, a truly amazing song with incredible lyrics.
wonderful presentation! Watching your face as you listen is a sheer joy for me almost as sublime as listening to Angelina happens to be.
Well done Alan as always, she is amazing. Keep them coming be safe. See you in the next one!
Thank you !❤️
Sorry Roberta Flack did the best version. Everytime I hear her sing it it gives me chill. But, don't hate Gordon Lightfoot's version. OK, Angelina made me cry. What a star
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A truly lovely comment
I use to go to a parking garage and put Roberta's version into my CD player. I would turn up the volume to the max and listen to the song as Roberta sang it. The sound would reverberate through the parking garage and it was fantastic to hear and the parking garage added to the sound.
Stewbal one of my favorite! It was also sung by Joan Biaz and she sang it so well.that it still makes me cry like a River!!
You’re my first reaction channel I’ve ever commented on. I learn so much about the history of the song. I love it! I so appreciate your work. Wishing you millions of followings.
She has an amazing ability to reach hearts, mine too, I cried like a baby! Amazing analysis too, thank you Allen.
James Blake WOW!!!! I would love to hear him sing the whole version.
The link to the whole song is in the description (between the video and the comments)
@@claudest-gelais8456 thanks for that information I checked it out and you were absolutely right
@@lydiabentley3413 Thank you :-) It was still absolutely beautiful to hear. :-)
Great result Alan, I love your analysis of the origins and evolution of the particular songs that Angelina chooses to transform them into her vision of music. Always very interesting and acute, thanks. ❤️ 😊
I love the "angelicized" versions of the classic songs she chooses, she truly leads you to listen to beautiful songs again that otherwise have almost been forgotten.
Angelina! There's no explanation for her voice. God given? Whatever the reason, we are blessed to hear her sing. ❤
Alan, once again I learned plenty. Interesting history with this great song. 11 year old Angelina, as always, conveys tremendous emotion with her version and this was before she experienced the loss of her paternal grandfather or her good friend, Avicii.
Stewball! Love, love, love that song! Thank you!💜
What a beautiful soul she is, love her voice, I'd love to hear her do a cover of Fade into you by , Mazzy Star.
Roberta Flack owns this song - her tone and phrasing are perfection.
She takes from Roberta's version for sure, but then the inflection quality she
inherited from Billie Holiday is interspersed with that of Amy Winehouse, for
in truth, that is and always will be the core of Angelina whenever she sings
ballads. It's like those two giants of jazz become amalgamated into Angelina,
for in my opinion they are the most unique jazz singers of all time with each
tweaking the jazz genre in ways never done before. Angelina's brain then
processes these in either a conscious or unconscious form of retention that
spills out from her vocally. The end result is a totally new form of jazz that
enters the human soul like no other singer......ever !

That was incredibly moving! Thank you, Alan.
She made me cry I am 75 years old
This song and many other songs she has done!
Roberta totally owns this song. It's the first song I ever heard her sing. And no one can top her. Her songs carried me through four years of college. She was all I listened to.
Absolutely makes me cry. And feel.
Thank you Alan for the time and energy to this musical history lesson. And the absolute proof of how really fabulous Angelina Jordan really is, even if only at the age of 11. Oh and many respects to the colorful words of Adriane's below about Angelina and your efforts for her.
Angelina,AJ it’s the BEST Ever🌺🤩 🥰👏very time you sing give me a lot of chills and goosebumps or over around me 🎉
I never knew so many had done this song , but the biggest surprise was that it was a Folk song .
I cried along with you Alan. My God! I hadn’t listened to this in a while; thanks for bringing it back to me. And for the history lesson!
History lessons and crying lessons combine very well
Alan, Thank you for this very informative reaction. Enjoyed thoroughly and appreciated your knowledge, research and explanation.
Can't fathom how so young a child can sing with so much feelings and emotions. Hope she will continue to sing for years to come and keep us all mesmerized. Thank you again Alan for putting together this video. 🙏 Stay safe. Love from India.
