Are real-life fire lookouts, like those popularized by the successful adventure game Firewatch, becoming obsolete with modern technology like aerial observers and observation satellites?

Meet Mark Hufstetler, a fire lookout at Baptiste Tower in Flathead National Forest, Montana, who believes human observation is still imperative in fire detection and management.
See how people like Mark have been protecting our forests for over a century and continue to play a vital role in protecting our natural resources.

Hosted by Joe Hanson from It's Okay to be Smart, Overview uses incredible 4k drone footage to reveal the natural phenomena shaping our planet from a 10,000-foot view-literally. Наука
Firewatch got me sad but amazed.
That was the first thing to come to mind when I saw this. Good but sad game.
Same it’s been years but I’m still hooked!!
@@bloodmoon2907 i just finished i’ll never get over that game man seriously life changing
@@owenfriberg8004 ikrrr!!
Markiplier or someone else?
Thanks for coming to Montana to visit me, PBS. 🙂
Thanks for having us Mark!
Mark, what do you think the chances are for an electrician/PV installer, amateur naturalist and tracking enthusiast to find work of this nature?
@@adlockhungry304 Here's a post I wrote last year with some information:
www.reddit.com/r/firelookouts/comments/aou1m3/want_to_get_a_fire_lookout_job_here_are_the_basics/
There aren't as many staffed lookouts these days, and most working lookouts come back year after year, so there aren't a lot of new openings ... and some Forest Service or other outdoor work experience is pretty much essential. So I'm afraid it might be a little bit of a long shot ...
Man you have an amazing job!
I was going to drop you an e-mail about this but it seems you're informed. ;-D
I can’t believe they made an entire Firewatch IRL
Yes, wildfires are getting more frequent and mores severe. Apart from the climate, the largest issues are definitely WUI as you state but also over-effective fire management. We specifically looked into these issues for California this week!
Thanks for watching and for sharing! Excited to watch!
Deeplook sent me! Hi Peeps!
Deep Look sent me
Another great video presenting new perspectives on topics we barely know. Thanks PBS Terra team.
Looks so peaceful, and amazing!
I'm starting to love Overview! 😊
Overview loves you back 😊
Excellent coverage of this topic!!
This video was a lot better than the last, felt like a GBS video in a good way
Yeah, still a bit strong on the personal/emotional for my taste, but much more on point tone wise that the other fire one. If they keep improving, this will be a great complement to the other PBS channels!
George Bernard Shaw?
Loved this video! I got to spend a couple nights in a lookout tower some time ago as it was being used as a vacation destination, and it was absolutely unbelievably cool. Very much recommended if you ever get the chance!
Yes! So many are available through www.recreation.gov !
One of my favorite places in the world is the site of an old fire lookout atop a small peak overlooking Lake Wenatchee in Washington state. We hiked up there one night in August several years ago, and found that we could see the orange glow of a small wildfire we knew was burning in the next valley. After sunrise the next morning, we caught a few glimpses of flames, but mostly just the two plumes of smoke. The fire was burning timber on two very steep and remote hillsides, likely ignited by dry lightning, and as far as I know, burned until the snow put it out in October or November.
It's amazing how much you can see from these towers!
Fantastic! PBS Terra is awesome!
I worked on wildfires for over 30 years and have had many fire qualifications. 40 years ago I was on WA State Department of Natural Resources carpenter crew that built fire lookout towers.
from pbs spacetime ... much love !!!
Wonderful!! I love PBS terra !
I want to play FireWatch again now!
A bit short, a bit disappointing at the end (a lot of smoke with no actual fire, so to say). Maybe should have made the hiking more compelling.
But I love the two characters and their relationship slowly developing. Their emotions were always relatable and the story was definitely worth it in this regard. The voice acting in that game is exceptional as well.
@@lonestarr1490 It was short, but I really was invested in the story. The Voice acting was excellent and two years later, I don't remember the length of the game, I remember the experience and the effect it had on me.
Definitely need to play it again now lol
@@lonestarr1490 At the end, you can feel Henry getting angry at Delilah leaving. That made it much less disappointing since we felt the same way as Henry did. We get disappointed at Delilah, not the game.
Another great episode..
Especially voice of joe.
Thanks pbs terra.
I know! It's ok to be smart sent me, and I was not sure I would like it until he said that he is the narrator.
You have earned a subscriber, really well put together.
I'd love to be a fire lookout!

@4:30 “Smokey’s everywhere, reminding us to guard against fire. Let me flick this cigarette into these dry bushes, and we can be on our way”
A public announcement - for our collective health - made with a cigarette in hand! Hindsight, amiright?
PBS Eons send me here and I like it
Super cool
Oregon also had paid fire lookouts. I think it depends on where the National Forest Service deems the presence of 'resources at risk' (homes, forest fire potential, etc.) that determines if a tower is manned or not. Recently talked to a married couple who have lived/worked in a lookout for three decades - they also made a case for having actual humans in towers like this video points out.
I'm here coming from PBS Spacetime
PBSTerra thank you for providing us this free videos. I have no access to PBS in my country so I watch it here on RUclips.
Love this

I'm here because of Joe lol 💓 (from It's Okay To Be Smart)
Metoo!!!!!!!
Keeper of the Forest, that's a cool job title
I'm from Australia I hope to find a job like the firewatch
loved the video, but can anyone tell me how/where to get the USFS Patagonia jacket?
Best fire watch advice:
If it happens, we might have to put it out.
If it doesn’t happen, we never have to put it out.
The game is soo good they literally make live action job from it
I want to possibly do this for a few years.
Spacetime sent me.

You should make a podcast with the same content. With Joe narrating too.
You sound so different, Joe (It's ok to be smart). ;)
Henery!! you there?
D, is that you?
When they said "when and how do fires start" I was like "oh you know some drunk pyromaniac teens launching fireworks and leaving their campfire not put out properly is one way to start one"

Can we build entire house of like 5 self contained rooms on 30 meter poles.
Ngl I have been considering a job like this for a season, just to get away from life for a while
From deeplook
It would be less fires in California and Oregon if they do fire control management like in Florida instead of following the philosophy of leaving the forest as it is.
Like I needed another acronym in my life. WUI. 😬🤨
Perfect for social distancing.
Let’s face it, these fire towers are for more than just looking for fires, there’s no doubt that’s it’s the most peaceful and calming thing on the planet!

Yes! Mark made a post about getting fire lookout jobs here: www.reddit.com/r/firelookouts/comments/aou1m3/want_to_get_a_fire_lookout_job_here_are_the_basics/
I’m waiting for you on snap
Ssshh...Don't wake up Pewdiepie..
Please be mindful of when and where you fly that damn drone.
Please stop allowing interstitial ads on this channel.
So the implication I took away is that we need better forest management (in part) to help prevent these forest fires that get out of hand?
Not trying to be political, but I see a lot of politicians putting the whole thing on global warming OR forest management.
My hunch is that the true answer is a mix of both.
I hate people, I need this job please
But now too much fire is getting bad and causing desertification
fires started by humans* operating DEW equiptment, starting fire storms.....that burn cars, but donot burn trees
Deep look send me 😘😁😉
"The humanity that is involved in observing these fires".
"Establishing a connection to the world".
His job is a service to society and nature and I commend him on that, but let's face it, he is reporting angles of apparent smoke. Let's be open to machines being really good at this and, yes, maybe replacing him. If I were a home owner (and I am so not), I would want the most efficient method used, even if that meant him not living in a treehouse, petting his dog.
better than the other video. But I still feel that more view angles should be taken. For one, you only talked about that North Americans have been using fire to control the environment. In Europe, we have used it to get animals out of forests and to remove thick vegetation in forests for easier hunting.
It also felt like you were trying to "push" an opinion onto me, which I don't like.
"Fire Managers need more data than ever to keep up with our changing world,
and Human observers will be necessary for success."
... I've gotta agree with you Zpajro, it felt a bit like I was being pushed towards a specific side of a specific aspect of a story, rather than being presented the whole story.
I wish PBS Terra didn't oversimplify the fire bans, the practice was definitely influenced by the US gov't controlling the native, indigenous peoples' controlled burning practices which was a large part of their economies and culture.
