This is our premiere episode of Overview, a show that will be publishing every three weeks on Terra.
There are a LOT of trees in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and they’re responsible for that dreamy blue haze on the horizon.
Trees produce fine mists of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which scatter blue light waves. But these compounds are also a key ingredient in ground-level ozone, and in the mid-90s the area had serious air quality issues. Not only was it dangerous to breathe, but the hazy blue was also disappearing from the horizon.
But it wasn’t just the tree's fault. Here’s what happened...
**********************************************
Hosted by Joe Hanson from It's Okay to be Smart, Overview uses incredible 4k drone footage to reveal the natural phenomena shaping our planet from a 10,000-foot view-literally.
Fantastic first episode! Hats off to Joe and the whole PBS team. 💙🌄🚁
Big fan
DEEP LOCK!? love your channel btw
Omg PBS Terra has resurrected from the dead! I thought it was over after their Antarctic adventure hooray!!!
SpaceTime sent me here (not to be confused with spacetime, which defines "here").
Hehe, hearting this comment. 😍
Same !
Same!
I think you won the comments section.
I came over from Deep Look. I love that Channel. This Channel is starting out fantastically. I'm from Virginia so I ❤ the Blue Ridge Mountains!
It's Okay to be Terra!
YES!!!! Joe, I'm from this region. Thank you for doing this! When I was in middle school in Roanoke, Va in like 1993 I did a little report on the accumulation of gases produced by the forest that gives the Blue Ridge Mountains their blue tint. I can tell you, yeah, it was a lot less pretty back then in the mountains. Anyway, this kinda meant a lot to me. I really appreciate the work you do and that of all the PBS RUclips channels! Keep it up!
I came here from pbs spacetime . And I am glad I did. I really appreciate the content
I love PBS so much. This channel was great. I love the feeling of exploring Earth that it brings
I want to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains! They're so beautiful!
If you go soon, you'll get to see the fall colors - one of the prettiest things ever! The GA town Blue Ridge has a little train you can ride that goes through the autumn forest
Eons sent me! Awesome video folks! It was lovely to hear Joe’s voice! I learned more about VOCs today, and I’m 37 years old. :) keep learning y’all
Fun fact: In Shenandoah National Park (a part of the blue ridge) there was an overlook from which you used to be able to see the Lincoln Memorial. That's over 75 miles away. Currently though it is only very rarely visible then the atmospheric conditions are just right. The last confirmed time someone saw the memorial from Shenandoah was 2016
Completely disproves the globe
Dr Joe from "It's Okay to be Smart" sent me!
You mean he brought you along.
I've been to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it is definitely the most beautiful place that I've ever seen.
I found this from PBS Eons! Thanks for making this interesting content
I'm here from Space Time and happy to have arrived!
Old UK duffer here. Loved it. What a refreshing image of your great country - something of a sorbet :)
Sent by PBS Spacetime! Great first episode, I'm glad to subscribe
Oh hi there, Dr Joe =D
PBS SpaceTime sent me here. Great episode!
Such beautiful views and interesting information! Thank you for creating this new series 😊
Came from PBS Eons! Well done!
Chilean here. In Santiago you have a great panoramic of the Andes Mountains. They look blue too, but not due to plants, they are mostly arid. When is about to rain, or has just rained, they look deeply blue.
Once, I was traveling to Argentina by bus, on a rainy day that soon became a snowy day. The mountains looked deep blue at short distance.
Came here from PBS Eons. Great first video! Subscribed.
PBS Space Time ⌚. Just subscribed to PBS Terra now. (Good memories from back in the day)
We have the same blue mountains in Australia, ironically, they are called The Blue Mountains
Coincidentally*
I discovered this channel because I was reading the Wikipedia page for PBS Digital Studios and I’m already a fan of EONS and Spacetime. Good Stuff!
Thanks PBS Space Time for bring me here at Terra, amazing channel
Matt from PBS SpaceTime said I should check you out. So here I am and I am not disappointed.
Joe's way of explaining is totally awesome!!!
After watching this video, I really feel a freshness in me.
I have the great pleasure of living in WNC and the views are still breathtaking even after four decades.
Enjoyed this! Thanks! PBS SpaceTime pointed me in this direction. :)
Thought it was about the Blue Mountains. Was half way through when I realised it wasn’t. Had never heard of the Blue Ridge Mountains before.
Learn something new every day.
Love this!! Eons sent me! I grew up in the blue ridge mountains in the 70s and 80s. So grateful for the clean air act. Wish we could do something about the strip mining. 💔
Came from Pbs space-time shout out, not disappointed.

Great episode. I was excited for this one and it didn't disappointed. The shots were on point.
PS: I didn't recognize it was Joe at first doing the talking lol.
Spacetime showed me this link
When I first saw the thumbnail at the end of the PBScrab episode, I thought this was about the Blue Mountains in NSW in Australia LOL
Good video guys!
Nature and science, calm voices and beautiful footages..I am never disappointed with PBS studios. All the best and thank you so much for your works
Howie is my advisor. He is the go-to guy when it comes to plants! I am so glad that PBS knew to come to him for great info about trees and VOC.
From the title I knew it'd be about the Blue Ridge Mountains! I was just there (western NC) a couple weeks ago for my birthday. So gorgeous. I love driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway. And I believe that's the mile-high bridge at Grandfather Mountain at the very beginning.
amazing work here! looking forward to what's next for this series.
Thank you Space Time for introducing me to this.
I grew up on PBS programs as a kid. It is good to see this transition from "cable" to RUclips.

I came here from EONS and I loved this video :) its nice to have a happy ending every once in a while! I also love that this is showing visible changes that environmental protection laws have made. ♡
Beautiful.
Thanks for a fascinating episode.
I really enjoyed it, and learned a lot from it.
is this Joe from the channel "it's okat to be smart" ?
well its all a part of pbs. didt know he was apart of this channel, nice.
😎
Reminds me that you can finally see the Washington Monument from Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. You could see it on clear days when the park opened in the 1930s, but pollution prevented that for a lot of years. Last year on an exceptionally clear day someone was able to spot downtown Washington DC from one of the overlooks on Skyline Drive.
I'm so encouraged by the good news!
This is so good! I love this part of the country and you give us a gift of understanding!
This was a great little episode with some awesome footage, looking forward to seeing more. BTW, Spacetime sent me :)
I am feeling so comfortable watching this... Amazing job Terra team..😃
Love the handpan background music, very cool
Eons sent me here! Great episode!😁 Learned so much, and I'm a Blue Ridge Mountains native!
Wow! I've lived in this region my whole life and I knew that the mountains are diverse and just overflowing with greenery, but I didn't know about VOCs at least in detail. very cool!
Everything Joe touches is awesome.
Excited that Eons told me about this!
Superb first episode. Looking forward to your future episodes. Fantastic and would like to go and walk along that walkway and experience such beauty. Where is it and can I go visit. Awesome.

So glad Joe told me about this!
SpaceTime sent me, looking forward to future episodes!
Thank you so much for uploading this video. It is helping me get through the pandemic!
You get that blue haze off Australian eucalypt forests too. The mountains inland from Sydney were named the Blue Mountains for that reason.
Subbed for the intro music. Thank Space Time for sending me here
Nice story with a happy ending. 😊
Deep look brought me here
[They told me to write this]
LOL! Perfect video to draw me in - I love biology and meteorology and live in the Blue Ridge area haha
SO looking forward to this channel's forthcoming videos..wonder if they'll do something on remote places...like Mongolia, Sahara desert, some archaeological sites, or some city plans in real...bird's eye view *rubs her hands in excitement*
Been busy learning about cosmic life with Matt. While we were hanging out he suggested I visit you and learn about terrestrial life and world it lives on. While I have passion for string based concept, quantum mechanics, and astrophysics I feel like we're amongst friends when I'm hanging with with the Space Time gang. They seem trustworthy and I'm willing to listen to a recommendation from good company like those guys! :)
Joe sent me. Great video, good job PBS Terra team 👍
I live in southern California and I recognize that smog in the Blue Ridge Mountains air.
PBS SpaceTime sent me, nice vids
