Thank you!!!❤
Thnx! I've been using SKII for probably a decade or more... I look for alternates from time to time, but just keep coming back and paying the price. I will never forget my mother asking me one day, after a year or 2 of using the essence and what, at the time, was called their cellumination cream -- "what are you using? your skin looks great!" .. the fact that she noticed something, just stays a warm memory and connection to the product line. Purely emotional reason to use it...so I was heartened to learn that there may actually be something particular about the SKII. Nonetheless, I am going to try an alternate (probably the Misha).
I have been using SKII essence since July of 2020. I’ve finished the starter kit in just 3 months, bought the bigger size and most recently the limited edition. I wasn’t expecting to love it, I was actually scared to try it at first because of the price. But now, I would only use SKII essence in my PM routine. I do have the Missha FTE that I use in the AM, but I can tell the difference in the quality by just looking at the product and the feel of it. Maybe I’m alone in this, but I love the smell of the SKII, it’s not funky to me. I really do believe that there’s a big difference in how these two FTEs were processed and their quality that drives the price. Yes, the experience is not the same. I even transfered the Missha into the empty 75ml bottle of the SKII, of course after cleaning it thoroughly, so I can fit my products in my small fridge, and still the experience and feel of the product itself is different than the SKII. And I also like that the SKII has not reformulated. When something works there’s no need for change in my opinion. And I stay loyal and will use the same product for years regardless of the price. I also have the Missha Red Algae and the Artemisia that I alternate with the OG in the mornings. And truthfully, I prefer the Red Algae to the OG for my simple AM routine.
@@ARGIRO248 you can start with the smaller bottle. They have a starter kit. Mine lasted about 3 months for a 75ml, it is suggested to use 3 drops but I use more than that like 5-6. You are so right about the terminology: Alternative vs Dupe. There’s a reason why certain products are more expensive. Thank you so much for these wonderful reviews! I recently ordered the Secret Key Rose essence before I watched your video, but the current ingredients are very different than when you reviewed these products. Galactomyces is first, Rosewater is 2nd and the rest are mostly different. I will try the Scinic next… the SK-II is not in my budget right now. You are amazing and I appreciate you so much❣️

I use the red algae in the AM and I think it is better than the Missha OG. Cause when I switch to the OG I actually miss using the Red algae I think that is how you can tell if a product really works for you.
I find that the Amore Pacific Vintage Single Extract Essence gives me very similar results to SK-II even tho it's a traditional Essence rather than a FTE & it's slightly cheaper.. very slightly lol
I was waiting for this one!! Thank you so much for all your reviews. This essence step has made a positive difference and huge leap in my skincare routine....I just turned 56. I have not tried the SKII, but have enjoyed the CosRx and Missha so far. I also am currently using the Neogen Micro Essence and honestly, I really really like this one too. I'm not sure which I prefer between this Neogen and the Missha, love them both.
When I worked at Sephora when someone inquired about sk2 we had to tell them the origin story while massaging the product into their hand with the shiseido cotton pads lol. I can tell this story in my sleep 🤣
Hada Labo also made rice ferment essence, Kouji Treatment essence. Cheaper than SK 2 but so far the blogger reviews said the result is the same as that of SK 2
I'd definitely try the more affordable options first and see what that does to my skin. If the expensive stuff is ever in my budget, I'd only get it if I feel like the more affordable options weren't giving me enough results. It's what I'm currently doing with retinol. I'm using an affordable product with a lower percentage. I'm 28, I can move up later if I feel it's necessary.
Great video! I started using the Secret Key essence + Isntree Bifida Ampoule last year and that combo has really improved the condition of my skin. I was already using vitamin C, retinol and glycolic acid in my routine and my skin was in good condition. However, I needed a boost and this combo added changed the game. My skin stays hydrated, is brighter and it just looks healthier. I'm going to try the Missha essence next to see if I see an improvement over Secret Key. Thanks for sharing!
I use SKII on and off, usually only when my skin is rebelling But as i’m getting older, i kind of switch from asian to western and higher end skincare brands, thus reach for SKII more and more And i hate it as it hurts my bank account, but i just cannot stop 😂😂 It is really an amazing products (if your skin not reacting to it though)
My question is, will you repurchase SK-II? That’s the real determining factor of whether it’s worth it! 😁 Thank you so much for your videos, I always look forward to hearing what you have to say!
@anamika nair 1 bottle takes months! I forgot how many months for 1 bottle coz now im using 2 bottles.. the essence at night and the treatment clear lotion in the morning.
I have been using SKII for 8 years now. I also tried those products which you mentioned from time to time. But I always go back to SKII which is top of the top. Yes, I agree that is pricy. 😁😁
I was starting to watch another skincare youtuber's video but as soon as I saw your 'This or That' video shown in the recommendation, I quickly switched to yours! I like this series. Was just hoping if you could include Purito's Galactomyce serum too, because that one is good too.
i love your explanation of the discovery at the sake brewery lol. will you do a review of the missha red algae essence? i'm using it now and am curious.
This is such a great breakdown. Very factual and includes the origin story of fermenting galactomyces. ❤ I understand the process of trademarking a formula and what claims you can/can’t make about a brand on the packaging, website, social, etc. I love unique & inspired packaging, but at the end of the day I am looking for the best formulation. Expensive doesn’t always equal effective. Thank for sharing your experience with these products!
I love your channel so much because our skin problems are sooo similar. And the things we look for are very alike and you are overall so informing. I'm so glad i found my go to skincare youtuber 😍❤️
Yeah I personally really love sk2, I buy it once a year as a treat, but I also love the Benton fermentation essence and missha, the dupes are nice but they don't compare.
@@mariaasher9880 i use it straight after I wash and pat down my face, I only use sk2 during the night since it was so god damn expensive 😂, but for the dupes I use it am and pm, there aren't specific time to use FTE, it's up to your routine 👍
My SK ll skin care products don't have any scent to it.😊 I'm going to Japan 🗾 next year and I will be looking for the SK 2 skin care products to purchase more of.
I like your personality and channel a lot! You've been recommend by James Welsh and so I'm here! ❤️ I also was so happy, you reviewed Whamisa, I really love that brand.
Yay, I have both of the top 2 alternatives already! The only problem is I stopped using them because I started to suspect they were contributing to a recent breakout (still recovering). I'm gonna try them again once my skin is a little more healed to see for sure. It could have just been too many products in general. I realized my nightly skincare had morphed into a 10 step routine without me noticing!
ive tried the cheaper alternative. yes, it works fine, but ill stick with my sk2 if i can. it maybe expensive but the 230ml ($75) bottle last a pretty long time for me (6 month...i kept track).
This has been very helpful. I started using SK-II...travel size and it absolutely works. I have hormonal break outs that wouldn’t quit. It was bad! SK-II helped but it’s hard for me pay that price. Your explanation of the other essence products helped me decide what to try instead of SK-II. But, if my skin prefer SK-II over the others then I will have to break down and get. Wish me luck🤞🏾
That Secret Key Rose is a love of mine!! I cannot justify that price unless it actually did undo damage already done... I'll stick to my affordable products that blur the appearance of the pores lol
I love your reviews, they are so complete and take into consideration many areas. Thanks to your recommendations I was able to heal my damaged skin barrier last winter. Thank you for the time and dedication you put into each video
Oh shoot, I really didn’t want you to love the SKII. That being said I can afford it but I would rather spend my money on other things, such as the NIOD re-pigment serum. I did just start the Missha one only three days ago and I am interested to see if I will notice any difference. We have finally got the opportunity to get a product like Curology here in Australia and I plan to contact them next week to really kick my skincare up a notch, as I have been using the Paula’s choice 1z retinal. Stay healthy, safe and sane with lots of love from Australia ❤️😊
@@marleneinedoktar-uosukaine71 I have found if you only use a drop for each side of the face it isn’t oily. I did overdosed in the beginning and did find it a little oily, but my face love oils.
I’m a beast applying essence. I kill a bottle so quickly, maybe this product can teach me to use less 😂. I love slimy essences, they feel so soothing. Living for the red algae at the moment.
Hi Kelly I'm glad you love it after spending the money on it, but it's not in my budget and that's ok. Sometimes you do get what you pay for, but many of us won't be able to stretch to that (same as the BMW lol). I have tried and liked the Missha, but for me these products are supplemental to my tretinoin prescription (which I do work into my budget). I believe I get more from that than any essence can provide, including a lot of smoothing of texture. The ferment used in it is obviously far more concentrated (even going by the smell), which is good for those who have purchased many bottles not to have wasted their money. I'm not actually using a first essence right now (having previously also enjoyed the Neogen), but have a serum in my routine with this type of ingredient family (isntree tw bifida serum). I like to try new things and have a few toners and essences in my routine I layer up. I will go back to first essences again at some point, but am using up what I have first. It was an interesting review though so many thanks and best wishes.
I m using isntree tw bifida ampoule too but i find it too oily for day time use so I just skip during the morning routine . Do u think missha FTE (or other brightening and skin repairing products) is worth buying for daytime use? I am currently using Primera miracle seed essence and wanna try something new LOL
@@irackyeung Hi I really liked the Missha and the Neogen, finding both to be brightening and neither are a heavy layer. It depends what your main concerns are. If pigment and/or brightening is your main concern then a serum targeting hyperpigmentation may be a better buy (eg ingredients like alpha arbutin, konjac acid, tranexamic acid etc). If it's just a bit of overall brightening and hydration then either first essence are very nice and both deliver a subtle brightening. Does that make sense? I hope that helps.
@@lorainemcgillivray77 hi thanks so much for ur recommendations. I guess I will go for hydration/repair and brightening products more as I already use vitamin c in the morning for brightening. How about Benton fermentation essence? I just googled ard and found it, got galactomyces, bifida ferments, ceramide NP, panthenol, allantoin inside, looks promising
Personally luxury skincare is only worth it if it has a benefit that is special and harder to obtain with other products. Currently my favorite first essence is the neogen one. I’ve tried the missha and I can see how it boosts hydration but as someone with combination oily skin that’s not something I really look for and once I finished it I didn’t notice a huge difference. The neogen really delivered on the brightening for me though.
I’ve just used the Missha and Cosrx ones so far but not the others. SKII is just waaay to expensive for me so these alternatives are great to have! I like the way there’s Niacinamide as well.
Thanks for making this video 🙏🏻 have been curious about the secret key and the cosrx essence as they are available where I live. So thanks for explaining the differences between all these ✨
My bf got the skll mini bundle kit from a hair client for Christmas and omg I’m obsessed with the essence. Kinda bummed that I didn’t know it was supposed to be used as a first essence. Lol. But the results are amazing, didn’t get super glowy skin but I noticed as soon as it sank in my skin was firm as a rock like never have I experienced that from a product before. I don’t want to run out of this so I just may have to repurchase. Ughhhh
I've tried so many essences, I have finally decided it's worth spending the money on SKII vs buying multiple less expensive ones. The main reason for me is that EVERYTHING is sticky on my face (can someone explain why this happens? Thinks will absorb on my hand no problem but then are tacky on my face and neck), but SKII fully absorbs and leaves my skin soft.
Thank you for another thorough and informative video!! 👏🏼 Currently living in Japan so I tried the SK-II since I can get it cheaper here but I think my skin just doesn't like fermented products. The 3 times I've ever tried one, my skin barrier on my sensitive skin has become damaged and super sensitized. Really wanted them to work for me, tempted to try again after this video lol, but I better not, repairing the skin barrier was not fun.
I’ve always wondered where do fte go in the routine when you do exfoliation or vitamin c? Also I know I’m always gonna be a Honda Civic kinda girl for the rest of my life 🥲 but like with all the add-ons like seat warmers and leather trim... (clutches onto missha fte)
It's the first step after cleanser. Personally i do cleanser, cleansing toner with cotton pad, then fte. And then all my other steps. Some people don't use cleansing toner so it's up to your preference.
Wondering why essence products have specific instructions to PAT onto skin instead of massaging onto skin like we do with moisturizers? I'm new to essence products and am currently doing lots of research to determine which one to buy that doesn't cost a fortune. Very helpful video - thank you!
Yes 🙌 these have been some of my fave products and I use a small bottle of the Sk2 or the Missha First essence s& the Cosrx galactomyces essence. ❤️❤️😌😌
I can not afford expensive skin care, so I'm just grateful that the less expensive, works well, right now in the pandemic, I also think it's a bit bad timing, to release expensive products, for example Jlo's new "affordable" ones.
My rule is about once a year I will splurge on 2-3 products that are luxury that happen to have bomb ingredients one of which is the SK-II essence. I tend to get these when they go on sale so I still save a little bit of money. However, I don't find them worth it to have in my daily rotation; they become more of a seasonal rotation. That way you get some of the benefits without breaking the bank all year! I've been eyeing the Missha Time Revolution essence for my next skin haul on YesStyle so I'm glad to see there's a more affordable alternative while I wait for the next seasonal SK-II sale! heh Thanks for the dopest content Kelly!
Still looking for first treatment essence that doesn't contain niacinamide, other than Secret Key or SK-II. My face can't take niacinamide because it's breaking me out.
SK-II is the ONLY thing aside from very strong contraceptives (which gave me OCD and anxiety) have worked to give me perfect skin. I had cystic acne before SK-II. Not a lot of it, but it was always there, painful and gave me hyperpigmentation. Now my pores are very small (they started out just small though), no pimples and I can skip any other exfoliating steps, as SK-II clearly has some exfoliating properties. It is DEFINITELY worth it to me because I stopped seeking out (and waste my money on) products I thought would help, my skincare routine is much simpler, I can skip weekly exfoliation - my skin is always luminous and also, if the rare cases I get a pimple it heals faster and with very little hyperpigmentation.
I love the NEOGEN Real Ferment Micro Essence Treatment, I saw a difference from the very first use. I like it better than the Time Revolution, but every skin is different of course. Kinda curious about the SK-II now 😂😂😂
Ah, that one didn't do a thing for me. I was so disappointed! I actually use Thayer's alcohol free witch hazel toner now and have no complaints 😂. Still dreaming about a magic toner that changes my skin right away though haha
@@brunette3cookie I like it better because of the more noticeable brightening effect. I felt like my face looked like a lamp. The missha one is good but the NEOGEN seems more hydrating and brightening, at least for my normal to dry skin. I also feel like it's thinner though, and having used it in the summer (this might sound weird) my face sweat was more under control 😂😂😂 as if it helped balancing my heat induced trans epidermal water loss. I started using the MISSHA essences this fall so I don't know if in the summertime the MISSHA would be as good as the neogen one has been for me, but the only MISSHA essence I would repurchase would probably be the red one because I like that one better for the colder months. It's kinda like a fat water essence and it's very balancing. The neogen is my favorite though, because of the brightening, the hydration and the INCI list. But they are all great essences, just some of them suit some people better than others I guess.
@@MarissaCooperButPoor Wow, thank you! I have normal to dry skin too so it sounds like it would be a great match for me. I almost bought it the last time I ran out of FTE but it is a little more expensive so I didn't. Definitely giving it a try!

🤣😂😭I can imagine that however I have really hard time at sephora or any beauty store with all the info and research.. 🧐🧐
Absolutely! You don't have to spend a lot to get results!
A friend approaches it differently: experiences the most expensive product first then settles for the closest cheap dupe.
Anyone have thoughts on purito galacto niacin 97 power essence ?
@@surbhisaini7875 Purito? Probably not really 97%. 😅
@@user-jc6tj2xt1p I meant that can also be an alternative for this right ? I
Great video!
I use SKII on and off, usually only when my skin is rebelling
But as i’m getting older, i kind of switch from asian to western and higher end skincare brands, thus reach for SKII more and more
And i hate it as it hurts my bank account, but i just cannot stop 😂😂
It is really an amazing products (if your skin not reacting to it though)
Thank you so much for this thorough review, i was looking on stylevana on which one to get. the SKII is just to expensive.
I’m headed to Japan next year for Expo. I’m going to purchase as many as I can while there.
Oh my gosh, I bet that hurt at 7:09 when you put a little of the SK-ll on your hand to demo the texture/viscosity 😬
I love how you explained getting from point A to point B ❤ but with skincare
My question is, will you repurchase SK-II? That’s the real determining factor of whether it’s worth it! 😁 Thank you so much for your videos, I always look forward to hearing what you have to say!
I've been using SkII for close to 4yrs now. Absolutely worth the $$$.
@@bamsalinas how long does it last
@anamika nair 1 bottle takes months! I forgot how many months for 1 bottle coz now im using 2 bottles.. the essence at night and the treatment clear lotion in the morning.
Your channel is pretty much my skincare dictionary…I’ve legit planned all my routines based off your reviews. Thank you for all your hard work ❤️❤️
My older sister uses SK 2 products for years and years. Her skin is flawless and tip top condition and she has never ever tried any brands.
I have been using SKII for 8 years now. I also tried those products which you mentioned from time to time. But I always go back to SKII which is top of the top. Yes, I agree that is pricy. 😁😁
Agree... no dupes for sk ii
IM DEVASTAED THAT YOU LOVED IT!!!!
Was waiting for the This or That series to come back!!!! Yasss!!
This or That is iconic.
How do you apply it in your routine and do you use it both am and pm?
@@mariaasher9880 i use it straight after I wash and pat down my face, I only use sk2 during the night since it was so god damn expensive 😂, but for the dupes I use it am and pm, there aren't specific time to use FTE, it's up to your routine 👍
My SK ll skin care products don't have any scent to it.😊 I'm going to Japan 🗾 next year and I will be looking for the SK 2 skin care products to purchase more of.
Thanks for explaining this, I was super curious… but I guess I’ll stick with my regular routine.
Kelly your hair is GORGEOUS! ❤️
You uploaded just as I was looking at new skincare! ☺
Perfect timing! 💖
ive tried the cheaper alternative. yes, it works fine, but ill stick with my sk2 if i can. it maybe expensive but the 230ml ($75) bottle last a pretty long time for me (6 month...i kept track).
How do you apply it in your routine and do you use it both am and pm?
This has been very helpful. I started using SK-II...travel size and it absolutely works. I have hormonal break outs that wouldn’t quit. It was bad! SK-II helped but it’s hard for me pay that price. Your explanation of the other essence products helped me decide what to try instead of SK-II. But, if my skin prefer SK-II over the others then I will have to break down and get. Wish me luck🤞🏾
What did you get?
I bought the Missha FTE as a result of your recommendation and I don’t ever want to be without it. I love it!
That Secret Key Rose is a love of mine!! I cannot justify that price unless it actually did undo damage already done... I'll stick to my affordable products that blur the appearance of the pores lol
Maybe not a first treatment essence, but what about Purito's Galacto Niacin 97 Power Essence?
The Neogen Real Ferment Micro Essence Treatment is my favorite. I think it's better than SK-II.
Give us an update on the Missha one pls!
How do you like Niod re-pigment?
I have tried the Re:pigment and it was really oily.Just so you know in case you haven't used before.
@@lo4568 I sure will give you an update soon 😊
@@marleneinedoktar-uosukaine71 I have found if you only use a drop for each side of the face it isn’t oily. I did overdosed in the beginning and did find it a little oily, but my face love oils.
Skii toner and essence are holy grails but have to keep patient at least two week it takes to start work but be. Careful with uv
I’m a beast applying essence. I kill a bottle so quickly, maybe this product can teach me to use less 😂. I love slimy essences, they feel so soothing. Living for the red algae at the moment.
Great video ! I like how you explain everything clearly 😘
So glad you enjoyed it! 💖
I love this series! Please do one on green tea toners/essences
Hi Kelly could you please do a video about numbuzin essence no 3 please, thank you xx
I was confused to choose an essence till i found your video. You make a clear review of comparison of the products. Good job, thank you Kelly.
Ughhhh
Been loving the Missha Time Revolution. Great vids as usual! 💛
Kelly, could you review the SK-II Lotion? It's less expensive than the Essence.
Sometimes your skin can only handle so much, it's different for everyone! Glad to hear the SK-II is working so well for you!
Thank you Kelly! Love the new hair!!!
Maybe it’s the parabens!!
Pat or massage it really doesn't make a difference, do what feels right for you! So happy this helped!
Thank you Kelly ! Another great This or That comparison !!
I loved this video - I use SKII products but have a hard time justifying the expense. I am trying to find a replacement for my SKII cellumination!
Got it. Essence before toner!
How does it compare to the Neogen Real Ferment Micro Essence? Where does it rank if it's part of this list?
I thought it would be #1.
That one is pricy too, isn't it?
@@star1Lu It's goes on sale pretty often, right now its $28 at Jolse vs it's normal listing price of $38 which imo is decent for 150ml
Kelly didn’t care for the Neogen, it was to harsh for her skin. She used it for her body. She has a video talking about it.
Thanks for this. I tried sk-II and had a major reaction to it. It’s nice to have some alternatives recommended.
When is the sale? Asking for a friend... :-)
Still looking for first treatment essence that doesn't contain niacinamide, other than Secret Key or SK-II. My face can't take niacinamide because it's breaking me out.
check out naruko la creme face renewal essence - it's a taiwanese brand! no niacinimide:)
Hi Kelly, what about Sum:37 secret essence? Have you tried it?
Edit: oh, I see it now it has essential oils
Su:m37 is amazing. I own it along with SK2 and Misha, it’s my favorite. I switch to Misha in the winter because it’s more oily.
I saw another video where they stated if using a product like the cosrx, you gotta layer it to get the effect. So multiple layers on your skin.
Just subscribed! I’ve been debating trying the fresh kombucha as well so I wonder how that would compare
Can you talk a little more about Neogen vs. Missha? Neogen didn't work for Kelly and I'm curious if it's worth switching over from my Missha

I’m surprised the Neogen Dermalogy Real Ferment Micro Essence wasn’t an Alternative. I’ve heard many ppl say that it’s a cheaper alternative than SK II.

I purchased the missha time revolution first essence because of you. Im currently using a sample of tatcha essence I would love your review on the tatcha essence. I feel that when I use it, it provides hydration.
