    Conclusion : SK-II didn’t work at all on her- not recommended at all too expensive. Missha did-(cause it has lactic acid, niacinamide, etc) she recommend but it’s still quite expensive. Cosrx rice mask- is one of her kbeauty faves.

Also wanted to mention that my drunk elephant vitamin c serum had been making me glow like nobody's business. Even when I wash the product off the glow is there. I appreciate your reviews and the medical opinions that influence them. Sunscreen and subscribe🤣

    Here in Malaysia SK-II is like a status symbol amongst women. Personally I've never used it, or bothered to grab some samples to try but a friend of mine described her experience with it as having her face 'peeled off' 😂. After her animated regaling i firmly decided to stay far away from it. Been into Hada Labo since 2016 and am loving it and am so happy it's getting loads of thumbs of from Dr. Dray as well (since a lot of other brands are not easily available here like Cerave). Yes, huge status symbol in Singapore too, with a special spa in Changi airport by the lounges. I waded through a big bottle. It took me over a year. I didn't find it at all harsh but it didn't do anything either. Plus it smells awful.

    I had the sample bottle too and it not only dried my skin out, but it caused breakouts. I never ever breakout. So glad I didn't spend 200 bucks on the big bottle. I'd rather have cute shoes lol They were hawking SK-II in so many drugstores in Tokyo, but still had the high end price. I paid attention to what the Asian women were buying and it wasn't that. They were buying the creams and masks that were 5 bucks for 10 masks, so that's what I bought too.

  • @imthisislizlee
    @imthisislizlee 6 лет назад +34

    SK-II essence is my HG of all essences. But I do love both SK-II and Missha essences, but for different reasons. I find the effectiveness of 1 bottle of SK-II is the same as maybe 2-3 bottles of Missha. I would not recommend using tretinoin in your regimen while using SK-II essence. I too, also find it irritating. The cost of SK-II is ridiculous and I only purchase a bottle once or twice a year (usually around the holidays for better deals). I recommend using the Missha essence in conjunction with the Missha toner. I just find you get better results. Both are staples in my skincare regimen, and they are the two essences I keep going back to, but essences aren't for everyone - although I think they add a great layer of hydration for those of you with dry skin.

      Liz Lee I stopped buying Missha after their bungle on sexual harrassment within the company. I found an even cheaper toner (half of missha regular) that is snail-based called Swanicoco Fermentation SnailCare Skin Toner. It has all the things my skin likes except propolis.
      Missha FTE somehow makes my skin really really soft.

    when I saw the price of that SK-II I couldn't believe it. LOL. Many youtubers push this product (often there's sponsorship somewhere in these) and I'd never use it because they typically have terrible skin. They swear by this product and I think no way, cause your face is inflamed and full of break outs. Then "poof" they are no longer in their favorites as they are on to the next thing. New product hypes and still broken out. Fast fashion/cosmetic industry is designed to empty your wallets.

    I've used SKII starting treatment on and off for over 10 years now. It's always been my go-to product if I have an important event coming up because it always makes my skin feel and look very smooth and bright after using it for a few days. It's almost common knowledge amongst Asian luxury skincare veteran that SKII Starting Treatment/Essence is most suitable for oily skin type. If you have dry or sensitive skin, it is NOT suitable for you AT ALL. Mainly because of its super high concentration of the active ingredient - Pitera which speeds up the skin cell renewal process. And you should definitely NOT use facial scrub or cleansing brush such as Clarisonic or shave your face(if you're a man like me) before using this treatment. Your face will sting like you're applying a 30% glycolic acid peel. Don't ask me how I find that out! :D

      Tatcha in my opinion is one big marketing brand...pretty packaging etc etc...but there's fragrance in most products...but my problem started where they wanted $95 for an oil with gold in it gold is pointless in skincare.my second problem was they sell a lot of products that you have to open and dip your fingers into...if it's just a basic moisturizer like Dr. Dray uses then it's not a big deal but when the products has all of those beneficial ingredients in it as soon as you open it and its exposed to the air and your fingers the ingredients are compromised and then you're basically just left with a moisturizer that isn't going to do anything other than that.

    for me sk-ii is my HG, I’ve been using it for 10 years. The first time I used it when I had breakout on my forehead and dull skin because of work environment, after 2 weeks my face became smooth and glowing I got compliment a lot. I tried to change to cheaper skincares a few times but I can always notice the difference, so for now I still use it intermittently especially if i will have special ocassion. my friends also use it, some love it others not really, so I guess it works differently on each person. But yeah its so expensive

  • @raluko1111
    @raluko1111 6 лет назад +82

    I’ve tried both the SK-II and Missha, and I’m sorry to Say, I disagree with you. That Pitera stuff is pixie dust for my face. Smells like some nasty bodily discharge, but for me, the glow and luminosity of my skin (no other change in my skincare routine besides this essence) were undeniable. Missha was just okay, it never seemed to do much, either good or bad, except perhaps save me some cash. However, one thing we can both agree on, is those price tags should be abolished. So, the cheap skate became motivated to make my own dupe of the product. Luckily I live next to P&G Japan, and with a little detective work I have narrowed down the sake brewery where I think they purchase their sake lees(the ingredient from which Pitera is derived). I have made my own filtrate and I even use the leftover yeast as a mask. The results are just as great as the SK-II, dare I say even better, as I know what I’m putting in my concoction, and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper.

I’m just wondering if it’s worth the price, esp. now when the company was sold out and the products became smaller and more expensive. They are VERY generous with gifts with purchase though and often send me notifications of 25% off sitewide.

    I’m not sure if the “splashing over your face” thing was purely a joke or not but if you had gone to the SK II website and watched the technique they recommended and demonstrated, you are suppose to put some in your hands, rub together and then press on to your skin. Your skin supposedly “drinks” it up. Some people repeat this a couple of times depending on how dry their skin is. Also, I’ve heard that putting it on a cotton pad is a giant waste of the product which is understandable considering you’re probably getting more product on the cotton than on your face and at that retail price, any drop wasted is awful. It’s not a sticky product by any means so I can’t see why people wouldn’t want to just follow the recommendations and just use their hands for application.

    I know many dermatologists and skincare professionals will tend to brush off the SK-II essence as a gimmick and over-hyped product. I get it - it has an unimpressive ingredients list and is way too overpriced. It was the original essence on the market (long before K beauty burst onto the scene and claimed that they started the essence step). SK-II also started the sheet mask trend over 20 years ago which spawned the Korean craze and leading Western consumers to believe that the Koreans started it. I have tried both products and as much as I want to be sceptical, I have to admit that after going through the full-sized bottles for both, the SK-II wins it for me. I would not have noticed the difference had I not used both on my hands. Because I use many products on my face, it's really hard to tell which products are actually working. But my hands are a different story. I do use hand creams and lotions but as we all know, they don't do much apart from just moisturizing and acting as occlusives. I noticed that a few weeks into using the SK-II essence, my hands did look brighter and more youthful. I'm still young and I wouldn't consider them old looking by any means but the freckles seemed to look less noticeable and overall my hands just looked better and I couldnt stop admiring them. I then tried the Missha one because so many people claimed that it was a dupe (and I really was hoping to find a cheaper alternative) for the SK-II, but it really did nothing for my skin except to add that extra layer of hydration and moisture. In terms of texture, the Missha one seems ever so slightly thicker and did feel a tad more hydrating, but in terms of results it didn't actually brighten or lighten my pigmentation. Bear in mind, I have never used retin-a or strong retinol products so I can't say that I will not achieve the same results with them as I did with the SK-II essence. I have to agree with you though that it can irritate sensitive skins. It is not meant to be used with the famous korean 7-skin method. Your face will fall off! I used 2 layers of it once and it already felt like it was stinging my face. Then I made the mistake of using it once after exfoliating my face with the Dermalogica gentle cream exfoliant mask and it burned my face and turned it bright red. Only after 10 minutes of constantly splashing my face with cold water did the redness calm down. So I guess it must be quite a strong product and the concentration of the active ingredient is so high to the point of being irritating. That aside I will say that I do place many Japanese products in higher regard to their Korean counterparts. Despite their refusal to remove parabens from their products (which may put off a lot of the more health-conscious consumers), I do believe that the Japanese beauty industry overall has a more solid reputation backed by extensive research and cutting-edge technology. They are risk-takers and innovators.
    The Korean beauty industry on the other hand, simply chooses to adopt the fail-safe method of using ingredients that are already tried and tested and housing them in cuter and more attractive packaging. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Korean products and I do enjoy using them as well. I appreciate that they try to make their products affordable and attainable by the average consumer, unlike SK-II which essentially targets the more elite consumer.

      you said your hands looked "brighter and more youthful", that just sounds like the super vague claims from countless beauty products. what is brighter - do you mean your hands looked lighter in color than before? and what does youthful mean - did you see fine lines in your hands diminish?

    • @keurebang8588
      @keurebang8588 5 лет назад +12

      Sounds extremely biased to generalise a whole country's beauty industry in such a way. You should have tested the two products at the same time on separate hands to get a more objective result, as your underlying bias strongly colours your conclusions about each product.

    • @tucao400
      @tucao400 5 лет назад +7

      You almost got me till the parabens part. There is no concrete evidence suggesting parabens cause cancers. If you are allergic to it then it’s a different issue. For the most part, i would prefer parabens than things like alcohol as preservatives in my products. Seems like you are also biased against Korean trends for the most part. I never heard of any claim that SKii pioneered the sheet mask movement. It has been around Asia for ages lol. It’s fine if you prefer Japanese products to Korean products but don’t speak as if Kbeauty is copying JBeauty trend.

I have been using the SKII facial treatment for about the last 4-5 years and it is the one thing that has helped my acne (of course I have use retin A and everything else) I use the SKII facial essence also and it absolutely gives my skin a luminosity that I can't deny. I know both the facial treatment and the essence are way expensive, but I can't deny the results. Maybe its because I have acne oily prone skin (or at least I had), I haven't tried the Missha yet and just out of curiosity I think I will try it.

    My skin is super sensitive with any skincare that contains silicone, alcohol, carbomer, copolymer, silica, essential oils, some oils (still not sure which cause haven't tested yet). Anything with those will always make my skin itchy, bumps, break out in many different ways and levels. I don't know why but still haven't give up and slowly experimenting with them. But my first skincare that my skin could actually tolerate was the sk2 essence even though after a year of using it my skin does feels a bit drier cause I didn't use any moisturiser at that time as they all irritates my skin. But this essence actually makes my skin looks brighter, softer, smoother, and basically the dullness of my face is pretty much away. Since I ran out of it I noticed that my skin is getting dull again, but at least my skin is pretty hydrated now since I discovered the skinfood enriched propolis essence since it has no silicone and alcohol but it has a bit of carbomer around the end of the list, and honey is the only moisturising thing that works on my super picky skin (though I know it's not vegan :< ). I want to try the missha one since many ppl say its a dupe but I'm worried with the silicone/carbomer/copolymer ingredients inside.

    I have been using SkII clear lotion followed by essence for more than 10 years now and I have to say I'm still very happy with it. A big bottle lasts me more or less than a year so it is just pretty much a yearly investment for my skin care. I have started some k beauty products and have not seen any benefits on my skin so far.

    Purito and Corsx have 2 products containing the exactly same “galactomyces ferment filtrate” in the 90’s%.

    To me skii does work. The treatment Essence is a pre serum btw... the effect is rather strong. The missha one is less acidic but the effect is less powerful. I doubt I’d ever switch this item.

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  6 лет назад

      this is all what they tell you to make you believe there is something magic here...it is a bottle of watery nothing......liquids aren not great vehicles for active ingredient delivery...very basic principle of topical drug delivery that you can read about in any dermatology textbook ....of course skii and missha wont tell you that, though

      Dr Dray I heard about this theory as well.. like basically all skincare items are not too different from each other. I don’t know the science behind it but based on my experience, I do tend to break out if I skip the treatment Essence for a day or two. I actually don’t really know how that works. What do you think about La Prarie I think that’s the name... it’s crazily expensive, 2000+ for a set I believe. Some tests suggest it’s just marketing but I saw a woman in airport claiming she’s been using this for five years.. and her skin looks like ten years younger than her actual age. I feel if I replace the treatment Essence I’m going to suffer from mild breakouts 😭

      Susan Bochy growing up I saw my mum using skii, so naturally when I turned 18, I went ahead and bought the same product that seems to work so well for my mum. The thing about skii essence is that when you have a somewhat normal/stable skin condition, it will work wonders for you. I was complimented for my good skin a lot when I was younger. Then for some mysterious reason (mainly stress and hormonal), I broke up like crazy and that lasted for two years. During that phase, skii only irritate my skin and makes me break out more. So fast forward to now, my skin is stable again under the help of birth control and acne medication, skii seems to work for me again ( I didn’t buy them just use some of my mums). So skii is good product but it’s not the “acne-prone skin cult product as ppl claimed it to be

      If ski doesn’t work for you I doubt Missha would work. They are both quite acidic in my experience

    I can't use SK2 when i use retinol. It burns and gives me rash. If I stopped retinol for a while, then SK2 is fine. But I prefer Lancome Advanced GENIFIQUE serum. It contains similar yeast extract but non irritating even when I use Retinol. It gives my skin a healthier appearance. After I strayed a while and tried new things, I always came back to the Lancome serum and found my skin better after a couple weeks of usage. Lancome Genifique is THE favorite skin care item of mine.

    Tried alot of different skincare like missha, hada labo, laneige, innisfree, kose and more.. finally decided to give SKII a try and never regret buying it.. skii helps to reduce dullness which all of the other skincares couldnt give me. I will never leave skii and always make sure i have a back up stock of it.

    Morning Dr Dray, I really value your opinion and wanted to ask if this product is safe? COSRX Galactomyces 95 Tone Balancing Essence. It is a similar product but the concern was one of it's ingredients butylene glycol which may be toxic. Appreciate your input as always. Xx

    Wow your skin just didn’t like skii. I have a bottle from Nordstrom since last December and still have half bottle left. Anyway, for me which I have dry, melasma and sensitive skin has work great.
    I have seen brighter skin and keeps my skin soft..smooth.
    Again every skin is different and not everyone is going to get the same outcome. Just my opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️
