The factory ground stud was right under your elbow when you were hooking up the charger. The negative car terminal is not a live feed. No need to tape it. The positive terminal is, due to the charger current. Thanks for showing me how to unhook the junction box on top of the battery. -Michael.
Nice job - you should mention though that when replacing the battery it should be registered with the car to tell the car you have a new battery and start the charging routine all over with a brand new battery. You definitely need to do this if you change your battery Ah rating or upgrade to an AGM style battery.
Omg!!! I was pushing the sides to the inside because one of the videos in german was saying to do that! I was getting so frustrated and desperetate that If it wasnt for your video, i would of seriously consider paying a bmw dealer to fix it! I was thiiiiiis 👌🏻 close to paying 500 from a 50 job i made myself. 🥵
the neighbor daughter car is 2007 bmw 328i and she needed her battery replace I made easy $20💵 less 15mins so I thank you for video the lil shop down the street would charge maybe $30 OR $50 and dealer would charge maybe $100 or more but neighbor daughter was satisfied with my price...
Good tutorial. Thank you very much. Dealer wanted $385. I bought a battery for $200, so I saved quite a bit. I would add that there is a clip on the far left side of the distribution panel. It has a yellow/black wire. If you unplug it, it will make it a whole lot easier to get the distribution panel up and out of the way. Once unhooked, I was able to move the distribution panel and zip-tie it to some cables inside the fender. This made it a lot easier to get the battery out and then in again. Carly app will allow me to register the battery.
Pretty sure you have to register that battery or it won't last beyond a few days before dying again. That 'intelligent battery sensor' you are unplugging there to remove the old battery implies that the ECU is keeping tabs on the battery's charge/discharge situation. So you pretty much have to register the new battery with the ECU to let the car know you just dropped in a new battery!
2 questions. 1- how do you keep from damaging the dist panel gizmo as BMW put out a bulletin telling people not to do the battery? 2- what exactly is the setting for the charger ? Is it on 2 amp, 5amp, 20amp charge?
If you break the T-shaped bolt that allows the cable to clamp to the battery you cannot get one from BMW, they dont sell them separately from the cable. but you can go to a auto parts store that sells Standard Motor Product branded parts and ask for a BP59C, or the BWD branded part BH59B, or go to a NAPA and ask for a 718628. Dont overtighten, the torque needed is 5NM or 3.6 Ft Lbs.
Great video! I need to replace my 2006 e90. Where is the best place to buy a replacement battery for a good deal? Should I also purchase a Bav Tech scan tool to register the new battery as well? Thanks for your help
Great tutorial. I didn't remove the little drain tube thing before I yanked it out, then found it after I had the new battery in. So you might want to do that BEFORE you remove the battery because there's no way it's getting attached to the spot at the bottom with the battery in.
Excellent video . What it is and what function for this red piece on the battery ? My electrician was to measure the load and now no more energy to a positive pole side of the yellow band .
is battery charger necessary before replace the battery ? can i remove the battery without battery charger ? coz i dont have battery charger i have bmw 325i coupe .. please i need your answer
I had the automobile club change my battery it was AUD$265 for BMW320D 80Ah 680 CCA, 140min reserve unit. BMW dealer wanted $738. So I choose auto club with free fitting they checked old battery first to confirm battery warning lamp ON, test on charge, current hold, resistance and passive discharge determined battery was 40% and dying. They did excellent job with trickle charge 14v 40amp during replacement. Only thing was on new battery first start up, I have a yellow ring with a bird symbol on start up console screen for ten seconds and then it goes away. Is that battery "temporary no charging warning" and will it go away?
Adding tape arround the negative cable ensure chasis is disconnected from the battery, if by accident you touch the chasis with a metal tool while undoing the positive nut you would have a short circuit and may damage the battery. It is s a good practice specially in tiny spaces like that one. Don't do it if you don't want it but I suggest to not make the others feel they are doing something wrong when it is safer.
Hint if you need someone to boost your car because you have a dead battery lift hood you will see red positive cap on back firewall passenger side. Pop it off connect positive cable then connect negative cable to any bolt to ground it. No need to get into trunk.
I have a question. I have a "service" sign appear on my dashboard - precisely a lifted vehicle yellow badge, instead of a battery badge as is the case in your video - and a note on the navi screen saying "battery highly discharged". I took a car to the garage and got the battery charged. Battery is 5 years old and never been replaced. After a couple of days same thing popped up... I have now ordered a new battery off Amazon and waiting for it to get delivered, but not sure if I should just replace it myself like you did or have an electrician check the wires and all the electric stuff in the car cause it's possible there might be some problem other than the battery... I am afraid the new battery gets exhausted in a matter of days.. thanks
I find lifting that distribution panel off a real pain. In the video it takes just a couple of seconds, but in my E92 it's not very cooperative. It's probably just me.
Looks like I need to do this on my wife's 335d... Wow, what a pain in the butt for what should be a simple task... The engineer who designed this should be drawn and quartered!
With the cost of the dealer labor and parts, I consider every part on my car a consumer replacable. Mine only has 57k miles and i've got slop in the small turbo shaft and pitted exhaust valve seats! Some people say the DPF backpressure is causing this premature turbo wear but it also might be the bendix turbo build quality.
My E92 335i needs a new battery as well, Is this a way to get around for the new battery with out reprogramming to the Ecu? If so this is a very smart way to get around the reprogramming that the dealer is charging.
Self note. When removing the distributor terminal you have to push it down and try to pull the steel tongue sideways away from the batt. It's not as easy as in the video.
I read that you need to register a new battery, regardless of the type you install, but if you install a different type, you need to register it AND tell the car the new type (changing a lead-acid to an AGM myself). Great video, but keeping the vehicle on a charge is optional and adds risks. First, if you dont have a good computerized charger (I have a Schumacher INC-700A) you could fry something. Second, you do run the risk of shorting out something with the terminal wires which could have catastrophic results on your charger or computers in your car, then again, maybe it would just blow a fuse.
+Michel T I used Carly for BMW (aka BMWhat). I think I had to pay something like $10 extra for the Battery registration add-on. The app itself costs something like $80 and then it would be best to get the Blue tooth adapter from them too (which is something like $30 with shipping). There are other devices put out that will register a battery too. Search google and you will see many posts on various BMW forums about it.

I'm not getting a battery warning, but...I'm getting failure to start frequently. I've trickle charged and driven too. Anyway...I guess I don't need the idiot light to tell me I need a new battery.
Excellent Vid and Tip with the trickle charger!I noticed you have did this 2 yrs ago. Have you had any issues related to NOT Regestering the battery since the change?
Wait wait. you would tape the positive cable. If it were to touch the frame of the car it would be sparking, arcing and shorting causing a mess. If you don't have charger there is no need to tape anything. The charger is to keep all your presets, radio, seats, mirrors etc, the car never goes without the necessary voltage. BTW if you by a battery with the exact specs, a re-register doesn't have to be done, the car remembers how it was charging the failing battery and will charge a new one the same way, not good, but if the specs are the same it is do-able. Here in dallas on craigslist folks will do it for $30.
question, i did everything on the video and got a check engine light on what should i do ?! and theres one little black wire i just couldn't find where to hook it up to but the car start and everything works except for that annoying engine light , please assist
Hashem Omar apparently that wire was used to keep the battery powered using an external source when the car was first transported over seas. So it (the black wire) doesn't connect anywhere.
why wouldn't it need to be registered? It tracks cycles and changes settings as the battery life goes on. You should absolutely register even the same replacement battery.

I have not gone to the dealer, but my battery icon has gone away. Reason I did the trickle charger was because I did not want to go through all the reprogramming. I have been driving with the new battery for the past new months with no errors. I have also done a dashboard system check and it has come back OK.
I have a question , do i have to reset anything or notice bmw dealership i changed my own battery? And do i have to update any computer system changes after a brand new battery?
You're supposed to "register" your battery to your car's computer so it knows there's a new battery and reads it correctly. That's the only flaw of this video.
you need to bring it to the dealership $$, or mechanic to register it. You can DIY that too by buying an OBDII device to do it (just make sure it can register a new battery - not all of them do)
