- The aria Gelido in ogni vena from Vivaldi's opera Farnace. Live, 4K video from the Voices of Music "Harmonic Labyrinth" concert, December, 2019. Chirstopher Lowrey, countertenor.
Vivaldi borrows lavishly from his "Winter" concerto from the Four Seasons for the introduction and ritornelli. The trills in the repeated notes are not notated in the manuscript, and are typically not performed nowadays, but in Vivaldi's time everyone in the orchestra would have known to add the trills for the "Frozen" effect--an effect that by then had been widely used by composers all over Europe, and so they are presented here.
One of Vivaldi's finest works.
The manuscript is unusual for the rich layer of carefully notated ornaments for the voice--clearly, Vivaldi had a skilled soloist in mind, possibly the contralto Maria Maddalena Pieri.
Text and translation:
Gelido in ogni vena (Il Farnace)
Scorrer mi sento il sangue
L’ombra del figlio esangue
M’ingombra di terror
E per maggior mia pena,
Credo che fui crudele
A un’anima innocente,
Al core del mio cor
-Antonio Maria Lucchini
I feel my blood like ice
Coursing through every vein.
The shadow of my lifeless son
Is a burden of terror.
And to make my agony even worse
I realize that I was cruel
To an innocent soul
To the heart of my heart

I am speechless. This should be shown in schools, I have a little hope in humanity restored with each of these videos.
Thank you.
Don't hold your breathe. 🌬️
the audio and video team are as talented as the musicians
awwwww thanks!
Absolutely the second stars of the show in addition to the beautiful venue.
Those moments when the orchestra goes silent and the singer starts to sing and it feels like sound of instruments gradually turns into the sound of voice - it's pure magic. Brilliant! What a hard work.
Thank you.
I've heard this with modern instruments and always felt something was missing. Man do period instruments make a difference!
They do make a textural difference.
This is beyond any doubt the most beautiful rendition of this aria I have ever heard. I'm truly speechless. And my god, the voice: what power, what musicality, what an inspiration! Bravissimo!
yes ! en dank-je-wel Dries Brouwers !
Thank you!
Yes!!!😍
You could almost "feel" the chill; what a genius Vivaldi was! Incredible execution from an incredible ensemble, as usual, @voices of music. Thank you 💐
This is, by far, the best countertenor I've ever heard. Incredible.
agree !
Too much/overuse of vibrato in his core tone production, but a lovely voice, certainly.
@@Jemtheflute help ! what is '" core tone '' ?
@@c.g.marseille4510 take rather the phrase I wrote, "core tone production". The performer's basic, general way of making a sound; the core, essence or centre of their sound. This singer doesn't seem to produce sound without vibrato - it is an integral (though doubtless chosen/trained thus) part of his way of generating a tone. I prefer singers and players whose core sound is "straight" and who only apply vibrato selectively and in varied ways.
@@Jemtheflute I thank you for your explanation . ( i am not English )
Mr. Lowrey is a superb artist and vocalist, and I continue to find Voices of Music an equally superb ensemble.
Cecilia Bartolo gave us a rendition to amaze - Christopher has added his counter tenor voice to add a further leave us gasping for more - this version is truly mind blowing and voices of Music cap it off..
Oï Bartolo is a character in Rossini , Bartoli is the name haha
His voice control is insane. And yes the period instruments make a big difference.
Christopher Lowrey's tone and technique as well as his intrinsic musicianship is of the very highest order.
Absolutely amazing. You can feel every note. Thank you for all the uploads. I'm honored to even be able to listen let alone see these brilliant pieces come to life.
Thank you!
The musicality in this brought me immediately to tears, this is absolutely beautiful.
Power, sensitivity, stylistic and technical skills, operatic sense - perhaps the best Male Performance in the recording history? Bravi, Christopher and Voices of Music!!!
So happy to find this... seeing Christopher Lowrey perform Farnace with Pinchgut Opera in Australia 2 year ago was a an aha moment, its the most captivating piece I've ever heard.
My goosebumps won't go away, please help.
:)
The echo in the space when he goes forte ! Oh ! My ! God ! Permanent chills
It was electrifying on the stage; I'm glad the video captures some of that energy.
That is the most pleasingly sounding version of Vivaldi! Mr. Lowrey sounds like an angel! ❤❤❤
First time watching a performance like this. I was absolutely mesmerized for the entire 11 minutes and three seconds. So beautiful. So much passion. Without a doubt the best thing I've stumbled upon on YT for a long, long while.
Thank you so much!
How such an influential and genius musician from the Baroque Era be so underrated and known today just for his Four Seasons, its beyong my capacity of understanding...
I think it's slowly changing--Vivaldi was an opera composer who is famous nowadays for his concertos. As more of his complex music is performed, we see the range of his skills.
@@VoicesofMusic Stravinsky went down in my estimation when I read his cheap gibe about Vivaldi having written the same concerto 500 times. Wrong, wrong, wrong!
YES! This and vedro con mio diletto from giustino are two of my favorites. What a masterpiece!
Amazing special effect / percussion on the harpsichord ! Very cool ! And Christopher Lowrey´s virtuosic singing
is just breathtaking ! :D Thanks,VoM,you are the best.
Many thanks!
Oh yes, it's that percussive effect on the harpsichord and those long aching bass section that first made my ears perk up for this piece!
This performance changed my life in some way.
I love this piece x galore! I love how you can see how Mr. Lowrey feels what he is performing! I love this kind of performing art. I would love to see him sing in person.
Dear Sir or Madam,
please forgive me my bad English, but I've found your RUclips-Channel on friday evening, after my wife and I came back from a classical concert in Gleisdorf.
My wife and I life in Graz, a small city in the southern of Austria.
Graz is the place where the director and founder of Concentus Musicus Vienna Nikolaus Hanoncourt grew up. We've in the city the Festival Styriarte and so we often heard ensembles like Hesperion XXI and Conductors like Jordi Savall. Also we've a scene for historically informed performance and ensembles in residance like Neue Hofkapell Graz.
Graz is also the city from the composer Johann Joseph Fux. The composer and director Robert Stolz is born in Graz. The former gouvernor from California Arnold Schwarzenegger came from Graz. The recent composer Georg Friedrich Haas is born in Graz.
We're very glad to found your fabalous RUclips-Channel! Your music and performance is amazing!
So we wish you all the best and we hope to hear and see you again on RUclips!
Best regards,
Helma Rink and Richard Ruisz
Dear Helma and Richard, welcome! Best wishes from Hanneke and David.
With all his heart ! Bravo to Christopher and musicians ! .... and Vivaldi of course.
Emotional truth, superlative musicianship, instinctive integration of singer and musicians - as a professional singer [mezzo] myself, I am grateful and inspired in equal measure by this perforance. Thank you
Muchas gracias!
These are all beautifully recorded. Props to the audio engineers.
Thank you.
Amazing! Vivaldi’s genius doesn’t get enough recognition. Viva Vivaldi! Outstanding performance. Thanks for uploading. ❤️👼🎼🎵🎶👏☘️🇮🇪
You are very welcome.
Vivaldi è un genio. Bellissimo brano superbamente interpretato. Grazie.
Simply MAGNIFICENT!!❤🩹 So sensitive and Charismatic!! and a perfect execution! thank you so much!
Oh. My. Goodness, the beauty of this! Absolutely stunning performance by Mr Lowrey and orchestra, bravissimi tutti!
Vivaldi, Purcell, and other composers of that generation knew what bitter cold was like (the winter of 1709 in Europe was colder than any one since and killed many). The period instruments and this countertenor are great at conveying that.
"ingombra" is an interesting verb choice too. I don't even know if Italians still use that word.
Thanks for this amazing release!
The brilliant audio and high resolution video greatly enhances the experience of the music.
I really like that you record in 4K.
Our pleasure!
This is very-very WOW! So expressive, so sensual. Good job, Christopher!
I found this channel a few days ago….the best on RUclips. Thank you. Your hard work is very much needed and appreciated.
Welcome!
Wow! Incredible singing and as always the ensemble is so in tune with each other.
Thanks so much!
:)
Haunting version of this aria - powerful, dramatic and yet introverted at times. Absolutely mesmerising
This is astoundingly good. Literally got chills listening to it. What range and emotional projection. Bravo
Hi, listening this video with headphones and seeing the musicians is a great experience. I am a fan of Baroque Music , specially Vivaldi, Purcell, Bach, Nicholas Lanier and just discovered the performers of Voices of Music and Christopher Lowrey, I am going to stick around to follow and support their amazing work. Thanks very much. An amazing performance and recording.
Our pleasure!
Complimenti! Una interpretazione tra le più emozionanti.
This is magnificent beyond compare! Thank you!
You're very welcome.
That hard instrument tapping makes this particular song the best from all others. The vocalist and musicians are great and almost everyone commented positive but look for the enthusiastic musician here.
he turns pages without looking at it... what?
Belíssimo!👏👏👏
Excelente, maravilhoso!
Thank you.
vivaldi feel you and climbing out from his grave on his way to concert bravo
Never before has an Aria been portrayed to be the very voice of Eden with such an ethereal orchestra. Tears are the only reaction.
It seems Vivaldi used a blues scale note at 9:22 Amazing composition and rendition Bravíssimo!!!
this is SO BEAUTIFUL, I am crying. Where are you'll from? I love your channel so much, it's incredible
congratulations for the brilliant quality of audio, video, singer, and musicians, it's BRILLIANT, MAGNIFICENT
Thank you so much!!
Voices Of Music is from San Francisco. They are indeed incredible!
Truly virtuosic performance by Christopher Lowrey, not just in the music but in the acting as well. The guy really sells it. A Farinelli for our time? (I'm not kidding!)
Yup with a score hahahahaha
Complimenti!
Extremely fine, Christopher! Thank you for the alert on FB.
From all of use, thank you and stay safe :)
C’e magique !
Igor Stravinskij said of Antonio Vivaldi that he wrote the same concert 800 times. We know that the Russian composer was caustic and had a bad temper but this piece demonstrates how Vivaldi sometimes copied himself but in a creative and original way.
Agree--it is quite astonishing how he transformed the material from Winter into something both brilliant and original.
You can tell he knows how to convey the emotion of the piece by the way the expressions in his face match the piece itself such a beautiful interpretation it’s something to behold Bravo!!!
Thanks!
The beginning sounds like winter but more darker
It does!
Those minor seconds send chills up the spine. First time of hearing this truly beautiful aria. Amazing.
As a commoner I found this beautiful, inspiring & it taught me something. Christopher has a crystal angelic voice.
The 'Frost scene' from Purcell's King Arthur predates this and conveys cold better than any.
It's interesting who began it, and then how it travelled. Perhaps it begins with Lully, thence to Purcell, and not out of the question that Vivaldi heard Purcell's version.
It's interesting!
@@VoicesofMusic Yes i know the "Trembling Chorus" from Lully's opera "Isis." I have the complete recording.I think Purcell was inspired by this piece in "King Arthur." All these types of pieces come under the heading "baroque special vocal effects." Things like echo songs, imitation of birdcalls, buzzing sounds, frog sounds (as in Handel's "Israel in Egypt.)Rameau, the great French baroque composer, was also a master of this type of thing -his storm descriptions, earthquake segues etc are quite remarkable.
God sell them, love, peace, joy, flood their hearts.
Pronunciation great . Voice amazing chiaroscuro and all, all the emotions are there. So pleasurable thanks for sharing
Bravo.
Fabulous all round. Poor Hanneke and her misbehaving plectrum!
Should have commented from my own account rather than the business one! Great job as always, Hanneke, David, and friends.
@@andrewkeegan8171 Thanks, Andrew. The plectrum was fine, it was the damper that had moved slightly by the end of the aria, which is not surprising considering the special effect/affect of playing super strong staccato, so I stopped the string from vibrating by hand (the earlier actions are register shifts; two versus one register engaged).
Voices of Music Ah right. I've had both happen very frequently, though seemingly more often it's been the plectrum not dropping back under the string. Mind you, I doubt I've been playing the same top quality instruments as you - mine have usually been beaten up by generations of music students! Stay well, both of you.
It made me cry... This is pure emotion, amazing. Thank you💙
