  • Here's my US 50 playlist! • US 50 ||| 11-day Road ...
This is part 3 of my US 50 road trip that covers the eastern half of Colorado. It starts at the border just after visiting Cousin Eddie in Coolidge, Kansas, and ends up in Salida, Colorado. The first part of this video felt a lot like the western side of Kansas with many small towns and fairly flat landscapes. But as we progress past Pueblo things change dramatically and the small towns are replaced with large mountains and incredibly scenic driving! I can only imagine there will be more of this to come!

It has been a number of years now, but my parents used to take us on the train from Garden City, Kansas, to Holly, Colorado. I was thrilled to see the train station in Holly included in your video. Not sure though if the race track is still open, but those days were fun! Pueblo and Salida were also childhood vacation spots and remain great memories as fun destinations. Another great leg of the journey! Thank you!

I used to go to a buffalo ranch South of Lamar not too far from where you started.
We could see the outlines of the mountains at sundown and after the sun went down, could hear traffic and see lights from at least 20 miles away.
The closest neighbor was 10 miles and every year or two my friend would get a call that his buffalo got loose. My friend lived in Liberal, KS. and had to go and corral the buffs.
His neighbor called him a "suitcase farmer"!

There is a beauty and majesty about our country no matter where we travel. This leg of your journey starts out in the flats of the Great Plains and climbs up into the mountains. And yet every mile of the trip is a wonderful to behold. Thank you for taking us along once again!
I am glad to see that you are still on the road. Getting up into the rocky hills and mountains is a treat for us Flatlanders, and we almost wear our our necks gazing back and forth. The gawking along with the ever twisting highway makes it hard to navigate. And the locals in their need to "get there" about blowing us "foreigners" off the road. Glad you remained safely on the hard surface!

In Canyon City, the Royal Gorge is only a small detour off US 50 and well worth the visit. It has one of the highest suspension bridges you can walk across. Also, out of Canyon City, there is a scenic rail road route the goes into the gorge. It's a little pricey but worth doing once.

Interestingly, Pueblo used to be known as the "Pittsburgh of the West" because of all the steel mills that used to be there. It's had some rough times economically, but it's still an interesting city.

When I was in the Boy Scouts it was a stopping place before we went to Philmont. There was an Indian round house place there were we all stayed. I haven't been back there in decades. I have no idea what it was called or even if it's still there or not. If you take that 350 south you will find several "communities" if you want to call them that, really they're just town signs in front of either nowhere or shacks. Despite what appears to be towns all along that road, there was nothing as far as I remember all the way to Trinidad. I think that road might be fun for you to explore one day.

I haven't missed an episode yet. Great channel and series. I got hooked on your channel by the Oregon Trail videos you did. Awesome job by the way. I love how you pull out the paper map and show us where you are going. Just a quick question if I may ? Is there anything left of the original Lincoln Highway ? With the great work on the Oregon Trail videos... Just a 🤔 thought.. I'll definitely enjoy what you make for us to watch.
    Thank you sir.

You really need to do a video out west from Kansas City to LA on Amtrack. it is awesome. you will see very little of Kansas because the train leaves around 11PM and will not see much after AZ because it gets dark early. To see more of the route, you would want to take the trip on the first day of summer, or the longest day, however on the way back you start out in Cailf in the morning and can see what you missed going out. There is no better way to travel than by train. or so I believe, :) And most of all it will not cost you that much if you do a round trip. there are many RUclipsrs who have done some good videos of their train trips. That said, I love your channel have a great week.

    John,
You really need to focus on Colorado at some point. They have the best and most old western style towns of any state.😊

I enjoyed that trip segment. I think that is the route my parents took to San Diego in 1941. I was only about two at the time. Congrats on doing the Spiral Drive. It brings the question....what area do you coach on the WSU track team? Long distance? Sprints? Weights? I ask because you would have to be in pretty good shape to complete the Spiral Drive. I enjoyed the video.

Thank you very much! I coach the sprints/hurdles at WSU. I used to be in much better shape than I am now 😂

The only part that was difficult with the wind was the last shot in Salida. It was incredibly windy and I almost didn’t fly it. But fortunately this drone is terrific. Thank you!

Hoping you could've dipped down to Florence south of Penrose where my son lives but that's ok. Traveled that road many times lots of neat old towns with lots to see . Enjoy!

I was right there close to Florence and for some reason I just didn’t go over and film it. With all the places I visit on these trips sometimes I miss stuff unfortunately. Thanks for watching!

You ought to talk to some locals they could have directed you 24 miles North from Lamar and East to the State Border to the Towner School Bus Tragedy site, happened 28 Mar 1931. I not a great US 50 guy, you ever get up I-76 and the Colorado Fort Morgan (not the Alabama one) I glad to sort of direct you here there elsewhere, never mind nothing happened here anyway. Story of the Tragedy is on Google. Great Job, Great Video

I like the census data but it would be easier to understand as a bar chart maybe with the population along the Y axis and the years on the X axis. I am mostly interested in whether the town is growing or dying. Just a thought. I love this part of the country.

What brand of map / atlas are you using (0:48 mark of the video)? I love the detail that it shows, being that still covers entire states.

    Really enjoy your travel videos.
    Questions:
What kind of camera do you use to shoot your videos?
    What drone are you using?
    Thinking about getting a camera.
I use the Mini 3 Pro.
    Have a great day!

I hate to be picky, but, the tails from Canon City to Salida were not Santa Fe's. The Rio Grande Railroad built the track through the Royal Gorge, and operated trains until some years ago. It was a shooting battle between Santa Fe and the Rio Grande that ended in the Rio Grande winning access to the Royal Gorge, Salida and Leadville. Really enjoy your posts.

You went through La Junta, and didn't stop at Bent's Old fort that's an abomination. You also bypassed sand creek massacre, maybe next time.

Actually, Kansas territory, endedcat the Continental Divide. If those boudaries had stayed the same Denver would be Kansas largest city. Not Wichita.

It was a tough decision but it was off 194 and on the other side of the river from 50. Looking at it I would’ve had to backtrack a ways. In hindsight I wish I would’ve taken 194 on that section instead of 50 and stopped there.
