@TravelwithaWiseguy, Thank you for sharing your videos I'm a newbie here just came across your video today . Ahh yes Hwy 50 is a long stretch of a highway definitely boring sometimes .. But, I enjoy your trip..😂 I've traveled through going to Colorado and, into Utah from there it's such a beautiful season right now to travel if you can possibly.. the scenery is awesome 👍🏾😎 especially in the mountains this time of year...🏞️🏔️ I must say traveling is good for the soul ..🌳🏞️ 🏜️ 📹 🚗🚙 What away to make some videos Thanks again for sharing..😊 👍🏾
@@TravelwithaWiseguy ah, it was "gimme that bottle" i just discovered mixkit. thanks! i loved your hwy 50 series. watching it again now. cisco, UT is on my list now. i went to that beef jerky place on the way to moab a couple years ago
I'm only an hour and sixteen minutes in on this video, and I must say it's a blast down memory lane for me. I grew up in Grand Junction, lived in the Montrose area for a bit, and currently reside in Wichita, KS. I've made this journey along Hwy 50 many times! But ever since my parents moved to Cañon City (earlier in the video before he stays in Salida), I haven't gone that far west in a few years. Thanks for highlighting so many small towns and cultural/historical markers! Excited to continue the journey west with you!
I live in Maryland,...and it is always fun to see where Route 50 begins leaving Ocean City as there is the sign that says 2700 (or so) miles to California
Hi Tony. I lived the last 20 years in Sacramento. Passed the sign that read Ocean City Md. 2700 miles (roughly) almost once a week over that time! Currently live in Central Missouri about 1 mile off highway 50. It’s a good road.
For those of us who don’t or can’t drive, these videos are a blessing! Thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and for including all your wisdom, stats, and paper maps! Thank you for making this trip one video too! ❤😊😅
I loved this video, and not only for the stunning landscape videography, but also for all the footage of late 19th century brick and stone architecture which constitutes so much of the history of all the fine towns which are part of the makeup of this geographic area ... very well done! Thanks for the journey!
Terrific video! I've done most of 50 east of the Mississippi and want to do the western half. I LOVE your efforts to stick to the old original road wherever you can! That's my approach too. Thanks!
This is a very good historical video. The video is very clear with good descriptions. Andersonville, Georgia. Amazingly preserved. It made me feel scared and sad at the same time. Thank you, Joe & Nic for your hard work
I love these! I leave it running all day….looping as i know i miss something! Watching it over and over. Have not yet finished my first view but i know it will be spectacular!!!!
Thanks for showing some of these little towns that still have a lot to offer. The bed and breakfast in Coolidge, KS was my grandparent's house before they passed.
US 50 is the birthplace of the interstate highway idea. A lieutenant named Eisenhower was on a crosscountry trip on US 50 that took 62 days to complete. He sumised a series of military highways for faster movement. Later as President of the United States the interstate system began. It is not widely known but the use is prioritized. Military, commercial and all other authorized vehicles.
First time viewing yiyr channel and I’m so pleased I did. You Sir have great taste in music and your videography is wonderful. Informative too! Happy I found ya!
Wiseguy thank you so very much for the content that you produce and share with us! I long for the day that I can do what it is that you do. Unfortunately I’m still tied to a desk, but I live vicariously through you. Maybe one day our paths will cross.
That’s a very nice comment - thank you! I’ve done this while also having another job, although it has a pretty flexible schedule. I hope you’re able to get out there soon!
My,Parents are from Alden & Sterling, and post WW2 moving to the west coast and raising us children there required at least trips to Kansas every few years your story has brought back memories of places and names of places I’ve been to and some I’ve only heard about now I have pictures and videos to remember Thank you so very much! I grew up in Cimarron KS but also lived next to Highway 50 in Lenexa Ks and Arlington VA. Really fun to see the tiny towns that were commonplace names for us in western Kansas when I was young.
My grandfather, John Raymond Walker, Senior, was the superintendent of highway maintenance for the Kansas Highway Department (KDOT) in charge of US50 and US83 sections in Garden City, Kansas until his death in 1958. He was also a highway engineer (concrete and grades specialist) for the US160 project from Winfield to Coldwater Kansas in the 1930s during Roosevelt's WPA program. Many of his bridge abutments are still standing almost a hundred years later. There used to be a sign at the west end of Garden City on US50 that read "Last Services for the next 75 miles! Check your gas gauge!" and they meant it!
Outstanding Video and Edit work ! The drone footage is Top Notch and I really like how you tell the statistics of each town / city that we go through while we travel a long. At one time I wondered if you had a good set of tires on the vehicle then you admitted it is a rental. Thanks for the Ride-A-Long ! I will look for other video road trips that you post.
Ive done something similar, 6k+ road trip on 2 lane highways as much as possible. The experience changed the idea of "road trip" for me where it really was the journey, not the destination. Pulling over for every brown "point of interest" sign along the way.
Actually, the interstate was started in the late 50s, a majority of it was constructed in the 60s and was finished more or less in the 70s. Thank you for your channel very much. Enjoy it.
This is a great video. Lots of amazing sights to see..nature and historical spots. A few places, I got really nervous about your decisions to take some weird side roads. But when you got to the building in nowhere, it was worth all my worries...plus there were so laughs too. Thank you
In 1970 we went from Kansas City Kansas to Sacramento My father being wanting us to see America took I -70 and parts of 50 highway for us to see places he drove through in the late 1940’s when he had to drive from KCMo to San Diego each time he was on leave from the Navy. I've lost count of the number of times I've driven I-70 between Green River and Salina since the early 1970's. When I lived in SoCal I-70 was my go to route across the Rockies to the Great Plains and Wisconsin.
Just watched this video. The first half of the trip was really pretty, but can't say much for Utah and Nevada, except the Lake Tahoe area. The motel you stayed at in Garden City, KS I think was the same one we stayed in several years ago. We enjoyed your drink of ice cold water on Monarch Pass. We live only 45 minutes from there in the San Luis Valley at almost 8,000 feet. We have super good artesian water here. Makes great coffee. Well enough from me. Another great video.
It has been a few years but one thing I remember about Utah is the incredible miles and miles of cone zones that limited the speeds. Drove me crazy. ha! Enjoying your content. Thanks!

I'm a great fan of driving old US highways that have lost there significance because of the interstate highway system. Recently did western US 12. Planning on US 2 maybe 50.
We also have a town of Clare just north of us (Michigan) which is named for the county it's in, Clare County. Clare County was also named for County Clare in Ireland. Just thought that was interesting.
John, check on the Original "True Grit" filming locations. I visited Ridgway ,Ouray and surrounding areas a few years ago to visit the Main filming locations, didnt hear of any in Montrose.
It would be nice to tour the forgotten corners of the USA. Considering how religious and Republican Kansas is, I would feel safe in many of these small towns.
There's beauty in the treeless flatland prarie, even though there's no place to hide. Holcomb, Kansas, is where the true story "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote took place.
The trial scenes for the movie were shot on location at the court house in Garden City, Kansas. My grandmother, Gertrude Walker, was a jury extra and if you look over Will Geer's shoulder during the closing arguments, you can see her for a split second seated in the back row. Also some of the exterior shots were filmed in Holcomb near the Clutter family home off of US50.
I got a speeding ticket on US 50, west of Ely, NV. 92 in a 55, in my old Peterbilt. State cop lectured me for 45 minutes, then gave me the ticket. $15...wasting natural resources...LOL
I’ll bet, if you did a deep dive into why highway 50 had so many places where it was 5 miles north or south of the railroad, you would find the railroad had right of way it wouldn’t allow the highway to enter. Trains don’t like cars.
Great video. I lived in Md for quit sometime and never paid much attention to how vast 50 is. I only used it going to Annapolis and ocean city. I plan on going cross country and I thought about Route 66 But after seeing this video, 50 looks like a much better option. But when I tried to map a trip using 50, I would get something totally different. Is there a way to input my trip utilizing 50 ? Oh BTW! As an Old Head, I really got a kick out of seeing you use an actual paper map (LOL)
FYI you’ll upset Nevadans saying it like that. The correct way is Nev-ad-a not Nev-odd-a. Love your videos I’m a huge travel and history nut. If your ever around Walnut Ridge Arkansas hit me up.
That offshoot from Old 50 to Hermit's Cabin is beautiful country. I can see why they rerouted Hwy 50. During a heavy rain the road through that canyon could be a dangerous place to be.
The trial scenes for the film were shot in the Garden City court house where the actual trial took place. My grandmother, Gertrude Walker, was an extra in the jury and if you look past Will Geer during the trial scene, you can see her in the back row for a split second.
You apparently like checking out the downtowns along the way. I love those old downtowns that the highway would run through to become the main street. So sad that they're so vacant now as the malls killed so many downtown areas throughout the country. I'm old enough to remember when if you went shopping, or had business to take care of, or wanted entertainment, you went downtown and they would be crowded with people and traffic. Ironically, Amazon and internet shopping have now killed the malls. Oh well, that's progress for you.
Yes they do, and they hide very well. Don't even go 1mph over the speed limit inside the city. limits. Speeding tickets from travelers is how they towns fund their government. Fowler Colorado on US 50 is famous nationwide for this.
Ottawa, name after Indian tribe, so what happen to all the towns named after the Indians?? Notice where you all live Towns named after I Dian tribes, so what happen to the population? Very strange what American leaders dominated people and towns to none existence???

I'm old enough to remember when if you went shopping, or had business to take care of, or wanted entertainment, you went downtown and they would be crowded with people and traffic.
Ironically, Amazon and internet shopping have now killed the malls. Oh well, that's progress for you.
