My favorite singers singing one of my favorite songs! I have seen Patti live almost a dozen times and she never uses the exact same lyrics. She does this on purpose, I am convinced, you heard what you think you hear. I heard hear sing the last part as: "We're lost at sea, in doubt, the vicious circle turns and burns, without you can I live forgive the yearning burning, I believe it's time time to will to feel." interesting fact: Bruce Springsteen co-wrote the song with Patti Smith. He also performed this song on tour back in the late 7o's (.
Well, technically, he wrote the chorus and some verse fragments and gave it to Patti who finished it out. In particular, she tells how at the time she was in a long distance relationship and spent hours on calls to her beau every night. This was the origin of the ‘love is a ring on the telephone’ verse, amoungst others.
Jimmy Iovine gave Bruce’s unfinished song to Patti and she completed it.
