- Now this is an interesting one today, I've headed to South East London to the famous Golden Chippy which has had a reputation for being London's best fish and chip ship. I've been on the hunt for a good chippy for a while now and I'm praying this is a good one!

As a Yorkshireman who's been exiled to London, I've really struggled to find a decent chippy. That said, when I was in Greenwich, I called in here and was genuinely surprised by the quality, service and the fact it felt like a proper 'chippy'. Really do think it's the best in London (and I've tried a fair few!).
Keep up the great work Gary!
It's because white British people are now very much a minority in London.
very expensive....
@@orionxtc1119 it's London, everything will be expensive. Especially when compared with prices up north. In fact compared with everywhere else in the country
Exiled from Yorkshire? 🤔
I've found that when up north (Newcastle area) it's difficult to find anything other than haddock or cod. But the stuff on offer up here is very tasty, and reasonably priced.
So glad you enjoyed this Gary! It was enjoyable watching you! And to you and the Gary Eats community, this is Michael from Florida. All is well here. I live on the edge of the Everglades about 20 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico so no need to fear storm surge. I was on the dry side of the storm, so there were tornadoes all around, especially further east, but none here. I feel very fortunate, but lots of my fellow Floridians were not so fortunate. It’s going to be a long recovery. But I appreciate all your concern!
So glad you’re ok, I’ve been watching the horror of the cyclones from Australia and they were terrifying. Thoughts to everyone impacted.
I've been to Florida: as far as you can go: KeyWest. From Occitanie, SW France, my thoughts are with y'all in Florida. Hang on in there!
So glad you are okay
Glad to hear you're ok. I'm a subscriber to a channel called Randy's Guitar Attic (named after the guitar shop in Florida the owner runs) and his most recent video was him detailing the precautions he was taking for the hurricane. He said it might be a few days before his next video, but I hope when that one turns up it's all good news!
Like others, pleased to hear you are ok. Hope all goes well for the clear up, sorry to hear of so many losses🙏
🎶They got skate, haddock and sole🎶
Remeber that old Bill Haley song? 😉
Shake rattle and 😳😂
Ah the old Peter Kay gag - "Do you deliver? - No, we do lamb, chicken or fish!"
LOL
I thought that too!!
😂
I took your recommendation for Tharavadu in Leeds yesterday and agree with your 10/10 assessment, t'was awesome. You're in the menu now though as it now notes that the Lamb Chops are a Gary Eats favourite! Great review on the chippy btw!!
Awesome, thank you Chris. I've heard about the menu, that is truly staggering. What did you order?
@@GaryEatsYou're now endorsing unofficially it seems! 🙃 At least you don't give out Doug scores. 😅
@@GaryEats The lentil doughnuts (Uzhunnu vada) and the Kerala Kozhi Curry, both beautiful. I live in Leeds and only found out this place existed through the channel so keep showing these places off, you're finding some real gems (and we did Trenchers instead of the Magpie in Whitby - another awesome shout!)
thats an amazing example of how far 1 years hard hard work on top of a regular job, can get u, and how powerful social media channels are becoming. I watched until 2am last night the poor soul running a hurricane watch channel in US, and was overwhelmed when 500k were watching him live. Thats a serious audience. Well done Gary.
Excellent quality. The owner actually knows where his fish has come from. I think it's pretty easy to know why the fish and chips is better in the North East. A lot (most?) coastal towns have their own fishing fleets, like Whitby, Grimsby etc. So it's basically coming off the boat to the chippy. Even my little village (Marske) had fishing boats.
And closer to the best fishing grounds of the North Sea. It's likely the fish isn't frozen, just chilled, so it's fresh fresh fresh.
"Crispness? Did I say Christmas? Ho, ho, ho, ho!" Such a pleasure to watch!
I do say crispness but I can understand it sounds does like Santa Claus is coming to town!
Wow gary, that chippy is from another time.....GMT.😂😂😂😂😂 sorry
A twist on the classic “Do you deliver/do liver” dad joke at the beginning of the episode! 😂😂
LOL, it's on purpose as well I cannot deny it Gibbo
That joke was offal .
That used to be a family joke years ago 😂😂😂
Gary, you are like going out with a dear wonderful friend. You really bring sunshine to so many lives. Last month, I was feeling so low on my birthday. I had no one to celebrate it with me, no presents, cake, nothing. BUT, you and I (you didn't know it) had lunch at Jamie's London restaurant and I did not feel so down. Thank you 🥰
Happy belated birthday Chelseagirl😘
So glad your birthday turned out better for you.
@@mah3223alia awww thank you SO MUCH! 😭🥰
@@hilarydaly8111 yes, thanks to Gary and Jamie :)
Happy belated birthday @chelseagirl 🎉🎂🥂
Was a brilliant beautiful chippy in south Essex for over a 100 years called Mumford & son (I kid you not). Unfortunately closed down during Covid. Fresh fish everyday. Fortunately however a new Chippy a year later opened up down the road call Oh My Cod and gotta say it’s pretty damn good. Fresh Fish daily and awesome Crispy batter
Thats a great name for a chip shop!
Sigh no More at this chippy...
Got to back your food if you call your shop it😂 open yourself up for major criticism if it’s not good. Mumfords was king. Same family passed down from father to son throughout its years. However because it’s old school they didn’t deliver or advertise. In Thurrock so many new people have moved here in last 30 years. Many people hadn’t heard off it. Despite food being top top quality shop was down a side road so didn’t even benefit from much through traffic. So lockdown was the final nail
I love the name of the chippy!
Although I prefer their Haddock. 😂
Another great review Gary! I don’t comment on every review now as I’ve run out of adjectives to describe how much I enjoy your content and your exuberance! 😊x
Another great review! You are such a joy to watch and bring a smile to my face with your banter, thank you 🤩 ❤
Ah I know this place very well. Chris is the man. Glad the mural is still up
I'm so jealous, that fish and chips looked really good. There's not many chippy's around these day's that can prepare and cook crispy batter, so often it's sloppy and greasy. You are so lucky. 👍
Always so excited when I see a new Gary video pop up!😊
One of the best channels in RUclips.
Thank you very much you're ever so kind
It looks like a nice old school fish and chip cafe.
A banana fritter is a favourite of mine 😋
Another great review, thank you both 👍
Good evening Gary!! Smiling and as brilliant as ever. Glad to see those figures keep going up. Cheers and once again thanks! Stephen.
Thank you very much Stephen
I know this chippy! That mural at 0:49 made news as the local council deemed it “offensive”. Common sense must have prevailed as it’s still there…
Tory and Labour leaders criticise ‘tedious culture war’ over Golden Chippy mural
The mural was covered by national and regional news outlets. Credit: The Greenwich Wire
Greenwich’s Labour and Conservative leaders have united to criticise the “tedious and disingenuous culture war” spread in the media over a chip shop’s Union Jack mural.
Anthony Okereke and Matt Hartley set aside election campaigning at last week’s council meeting following repeated stories wrongly claiming that the owner of the Golden Chippy on Greenwich High Road had been ordered to remove a mural because it featured a Union Jack.
The chip shop is in the tightly-policed Ashburnham Triangle conservation area where any changes to buildings - including murals - have to be approved by the council
BBC London, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, GB News and the News Shopper all ran stories about the mural in the last two weeks of March.
The Golden Chippy was once named the best in London and has an eye for publicity - a similar story appeared in the Evening Standard in 2018, this time about a 17-foot sign above the shop also bearing a Union Jack.
Conservative leader Hartley - who said the shop sold “cracking fish and chips” - told the meeting: “This media coverage continues to appear despite the story being repeatedly and comprehensively debunked.
“These stories continue to be shared and pushed online by individuals who are trying to create some kind of tedious, disingenuous culture war.
Hartley conceded that the shop sold “cracking fish and chips” Credit: The Greenwich Wire
“The council’s request for the mural to be removed is a simple and straightforward and really quite boring planning enforcement issue relating to the conservation area. The fact the Union Jack happens to appear on this mural has absolutely nothing to do with the council’s request for it to be removed.”
“Our residents rightly expect that everyone should play by the same rules when it comes to the planning system. So would the leader agree with me that this issue is actually a simple question of that good old fashioned British sense of fair play.”
Okereke, the Labour leader of the council, responded: “This council is extremely proud of our country. I would reiterate, we have not asked the business to remove the advert because of the presence of a Union Jack. This is not a culture war and it would be disingenuous to state otherwise as certain media outlets have suggested.
“Rather, we have taken action against an advert placed in a conservation area without planning permission. It is therefore a straightforward planning enforcement issue. Sometimes in local government, things are really boring - just not in this case.”
That was also proved to be nonsense. It was nothing to do with being offensive, it was an unlicensed and unauthorised advert.
@@cjlhessing I posted a article about that point but seems to have been removed
Common sense did prevail thankfully
Unlicensed advert? More likely the council wasn't happy with the fish waving the Union flag! 🇬🇧
Another wonderful film, as a contractor of over 35 years I eat out a lot, I noticed you have done the Regency cafe in Westminster but also in Brighton there is a cafe named Joe's Cafe situated on Hamilton Street which I think equals the Regency or may even surpass it, they are two different types of cafe but the common denominator is top quality ingredients. I'm so confident that you'll be more than impressed that I'll wager if you don't absolutely love the breakfast in there I will eat your hat or pay for the breakfast myself.
Gary your reviews are to point i really enjoy watching your videos keep up the awesome work
We love Gary. Maybe because it is excellent " Silence is Golden, Golden, But my eyes still see..." Just Chomp away quietly.
It's genuinely good to know that we do have a few chippies in London that can hold their own alongside the great northern ones. That battered rock fish looked hearty, the salad gave the plate some nice colour and the banana fritter pudding seemed a scrummy way to finish the meal. Another eaterie added on my list now, cheers, Gary.
Great to see you too our lovely Gary .
I love Rock (Huss) it's a very meaty fish . Although my favourite is Haddock with the skin on.
Shame the Rock was smaller than the norm but it looked lovely and fresh ,I must say.
A very fair score for a delicious looking meal.
Thank you for sharing Our lovely Gary and Son . Have a peaceful evening sweet x 😊
Rock is Dogfish, not bullhuss. Aka rock salmon. ( though the name normally refers to several species of the same family) Dog fish was what was normally used, as it was caught havily as a by catch.. huss if far less common to catch. Used to be the standard fish n chips here in Yorkshire. Dont see it about anymore though.
@@hillbill79 I grew up in the South and Rock or Rock Salmon nicknamed Huss was widely available.Huss is as you say a general term for Rock, dogfish and bullhuss. But it's lovely that some chippies still sell it here. I love it though. So much has changed over the years which is a real shame. Thank you for your reply sweet. Wishing you a great weekend ahead x😊
This one brought me memories of the Britisch south coast chippies back when I did a 2 week walk on the coast path as a 19 year old youngster (and I'm 58 now). The setting of this chippy with the outside tent for some reason popped me right up the memory lane. Lookiing forward to your Scottish trip
Cant find a decent chip shop now all seem to be very poor quality and very expensive. Thanks gary.
I do agree, this one is a good one I must admit
Gary, I’m very happy you enjoyed your meal after a series of disappointments. The crunch on the fish, scampi, and banana was so good it made my mouth water. As always, I’m glad you gave it a go.
What a charming little fish shop. The food looked really delicious. Another win for a local Mom and Pop shop!! Gary I really enjoy the reviews from the local family businesses. Fantastic review as always...........see you in Scotland 👋. Cheers.
Thank you very much, I'm coming at the start of November
You've rooted out another winner Gary. Must give it a try when I'm next in Greenwich!
Let’s give it ago🎉🎉🎉🎉
You must give it a go Adrian
Thank you Gary and cameraman for another quality review.
I am in Woolwich next week, and will go here. What is very good about this video is - for a type 1 diabetic, it is very frustrating with fish and chips as you have to either guess (often wrongly) how many chips youre going to get served to sort out your insulin...or wait til the food arrives and it goes cold while sorting out your insulin. Thanks to you young Gaz - i now know beforehand!!!
By the way, I have messaged you several times (and each time youve replied, so no worries) about Inn at the Sticks in Llansteffan...today it was named in the Good Food Guide's UK Top 50! Get down there!
That looked amazing Garry, glad you found them!
Thank you very much Anne, it was delicious
While I’m not a fish ‘n’ chips expert, the presence of a salad on the plate kind of defeats the purpose of the meal. 😊
I've eaten at this Chippy probably several hundred times over a decade. Yeah the salad does look weird initially, but trust me, it really works.
Not liking mushy peas or any peas for that matter, and liking something green on my plate, that would suit me but we are all different.
Super review as always, looked fab, well done Gary and thank you
Thank you Lynda 🌹
As a Londoner, Rock is my favourite fish. Although the portion looked small, it seemed cooked well.
TBH: Gary did order the 'small' - There was an optional 'large' for more money (£17.50) on the menu...
Another cracking episode/review, Gary! I love the little pieces of batter, sorry I meant banter... 40 seconds in, and you didn't disappoint! Never change, Gary... never change! All the best to you and your son!
P.S. looking forward to your journey to Scotland. I haven't been since '96 and have always promised to go back - but watching from here will suffice!
Gary, I am so so happy you are finally reviewing the Golden Chippy. I used to live 3 minutes walk from there for 10 years, and I have such fond memories of it. The owner is great and has never compromised on quality and the place is packed on a weekend afternoon.
This place was such a refuge for many of us during the pandemic, as they stayed open for take out and you could treat yourself to a nice portion of cod and chips when everything was so bleak. Greenwich park is only a 10 minute walk away as well.
I can't quite emphasise how much this place means to me.
Hope the owner and family know 😊
That is so brilliant to hear and I'm glad you're so passionate about the Golden Chippy. It's a great place for sure - have a lovely week
@@GaryEatsanother brilliant video gary
On edge of seat as Gazza cogitated over the scampi! The wave of relief as it got the thumbs up!😀
Wasn't that the place that got taken to task for having the audacity to have a painted mural featuring the union flag? If so glad to see it's still there👍
Great to see you again too Gary as always. My personal recommendation is a Yemeni style restaurant in York called Yemen Heaven, it's a small cozy restaurant but honestly, the food is the most incredibly seasoned and flavoursome stuff ever.
Beautiful chicken and lamb dishes and amazing warming stews, homemade flatbreads.
You and the lad must go!
Rock (aka Rock Eel/Bull Huss/Dog Fish. It is actually a small member of the Shark family) can be caught along many beaches around the UK.
I caught mine along the 18 mile long Chesil Beach, in Dorset (A wonderful fishing spot, gets very deep at a short distance out, so Ideal for fishing).
People love Rock not only for the taste, but because it's only got one bone.
Awesome info
My fave eating Fish ❤
Interesting, thank you 😊 I've not tried rock before, but now I feel intrigued to find some and give it a go. I live along the south coast, quite near to Old Portsmouth, where I know they sell freshly caught fish.
So glad that you enjoyed the meal. Looks lovely. I must start eating mushy peas with my chips. It will be a new thing for me. Follower from South Africa.
You definitely should! Salt and vinegar on your chips with some mushy peas 😋
Great to see you too😂
How you doing Philip?
Blimey, I was nervous for the Golden Chippy… but Gary was happy so all is well and good! Loved how you kept us waiting after your first bite of the scampi for your verdict 😂 It was also funny when the waitress asked if everything was OK and you replied ‘yes’ even though you’d moved your fish & chips to one side 😂
The world needs more Gary! His positivity and inspiration always make my day. I was feeling sad now I feel happy. Keep making great videos Gary and Mr. Cameraman. Best wishes to you both - Tania and Chirpy xxx
This was like Memory Lane, my dad used to love his Rock and chips and we would have this every Friday. Another great review Gary 😊
Gary's nutty. He said it himself. He's certainly the best food critic on social media!
Thank you as always Gary 👍👌
Good one Gary, thank you both !
Hi Gary! You're going to start looking like a delicious piece of yummy fish, if you keep up the chippy reviews! 😅 The good F+C videos can be a little hard to watch, because it all looks so tempting. The fish itself & the crunch of the batter looked & sounded amazing! Mushy peas seem to be more a miss than a hit in many places, so really glad these ones were good. Such a quality & enjoyable review as always Gary. Take care. 😊💙
Ps: I did have a deep fried mars bar once, which was actually in Edinburgh. Once was enough. Lol
Appreciate the liver joke at the start. Hope you’re well Gary, really enjoying your videos!
For a country famous for its Fish and chips its amazing how many rubbish fish and chip shops there are around
there are now sadly 😢used to be good
Totally agree even a good greasy spoon hard to find.
@@michaelj9437 Where do you live ? In NW london there are many good Fish and Chip shops , and excellent greasy spoons!?
It's usually down to who owns the fish shop.!!!!!
I wondered what rock was like. Interesting to see something different in a fish and chip shop. It looked better when you cut it open than it did when it arrived. Nice shirt too ❤
Great review as always Gary and I especially like that they're all filmed in 4K60 video quality, which really adds to the viewing experience, making the picture look more like a moving photograph rather than a video. I love chippy food so this place will be worth a visit if I'm ever down that way.
Yep! I agree. 😊

But it's not Friday!
Our local chippy was closed tonight. The police were taking the owner away in handcuffs for animal abuse ,seemingly, he battered two fish 😂😂. Another great reviews , thanks for making my night .

Cant wait to see if you like it
In South Africa, we usually have a choice of snoek, hake or kingklip.
I always have hake
Thank you very much Ingrid. Got to have it once in a while!
That fish looked so good, I have never had rock fish, the whole thing has made me want fish & chips at 7am in the morning lol. Love your work 😊
Thank you so very much
I forgot to say, a cup of tea is really nice with fish and chips 👍 it goes so well one of lives Little mysteries
Totally agree...same goes for pie an mash....not a fizzy drink or some poncey coffee
@@Lloyd1885 yes mate 👍
Noticed the sides didn't include fried or steamed dim sims or potato cakes or scallops as some call them or fried scallops which are standard side dishes in Australia. Hoping that one day I see them on a British menu somewhere. Mushy peas, curry and gravy aren't something you see in Australia but the vinegar from the pickle onion jar is popular. All the same the fish and the chips did look nice. 😊
Great chippies down South? try The Village in Locksbottom, or McDermotts in New Addington, both great chiippies mate with lovely made to order food. Cheers
I will take a look
I must be nuts, sitting here watching you eat and enjoying your fish and chips.Well were far from the coast and there's just no decent fish and chips up here. So,I'll enjoy watching you.❤
Agreed, it took my 23 years to find a decent chippy in London, until I found this gem. Sitting outside on a warm Friday evening adds to the nostalgia.
Oh yes!
Excellent meal there. Enjoyed the little asides!
Thank you 😋
I’m so glad you went to the Golden Chippy Gary. I used to go here every year in the 2000s when living in SE London. Looks like the standard has not slipped. It’s a definite 9/10 as the vibe is always great and the batter is perfection. Your Scottish trip must include a Mars bar and hoping an Arbroath Smokie.
Great to see you too Gary 😁
Jesus wept those prices!!!!
Even Dick Turpin wore a mask
Do remember it's restaurant prices, takeaway much cheaper
£9 for a saveloy!🤣
It'd have to be bigger than their large fish for that!
@@GaryEats Even so Gary, It was bloody dear. Probably average prices for London but, If your further North up the map to us, It's blooming expensive. 😂
That's a fair comment. I was shocked to see that a regular cod in Trenchers Whitby is £17!!
another great video Gary , this place looks amazing
Thank you very much
The breadcrumbs on the scampi where way over, the fish portion too small, the chip portion minimal. Worst of all £7 for a main chips (on the menu.) It's one of the things I really miss about living up north (left 30 years ago,) the southern half of the country has no idea what fish and chips really is and don't get me started on most places mushy peas.
I think it's just the way it looked, I can confirm they were not burnt apart from the little one. I doubt they would send them out if they were
Spot on - I couldn’t agree more!
Nice to see you to see you nice 😂 , always a pleasure to see King Gary !!!
Gary that not vinegar then if it's non brewed condiment. It's alot cheaper.
I actually prefer non-brewed condiment to malt vinegar. It's quite hard to find in shops, but many chippies sell it.
That's right, and it's noteworthy to be aware that if the dilution rate is not correct it can do you harm. When I was doing a lot of traveling I used to keep a bottle of malt vinegar in the car. Another reason for doing this was if they wrapped the F&C up (because it seems that outside Yorkshire very few understand what 'I'd like them open please' means) the paper absorbs most of the NBC anyway.
@@paulsawtell3991 In London I always used to be asked if I wanted them open, but lately they never ask. I probably look too old to be eating them in the street.
When I was a child, my gran used to cook for us a fried banana with our egg in the window on a Saturday morning. Brings back memories. Thanks for the video 👍
Firstly salad with fish and chips is an odd one but the fact said salad takes up a 3rd of the plate is a bit of a red flag to me!
Less chance of noticing a half portion of fish.

Hip, hip, HOORAY! Hi Gary, I giggled at myself... Fish and chips, never bode well for you. When you said, Rock, which happens to be one of my favourites/Plaice being its twin... No second place for either in my book, I cringed. I shouted at the screen, ' Please, please be good. We have a London venue that was not only pleasing to the taste for you, but had screen value... I did wonder about the scampi but true to form you also got past the darkness of the batter. Nice looking Restaurant, with nice staff... You couldn't wish for more. Thank you for finding a good one to review in London... It was a good watch. x
Yorkshire is the fish and chip capital! Always has to be beef dripping. Peas look dry, scampi over cooked, and never salad.

Another great review. Also @GaryEats thank you for replying to my comment on your Ramsey related review. A lot of RUclipsrs I am subscribed to don't bother replying so it's refreshing to see someone who does. I saw your comment about going to America and trying some of his restaurants there. One recommendation I have is Gordon Ramsey Fish and Chips in Times Square New York. 1500 Broadway Suite 105, New York, NY 10036, United States. My Dad and I had shared fish and chips and to quote Ramsey himself it was effing delicious lol
In my books, the only “salad” you should have with fish and chips is garden peas.
Another excellent review Gary! 👏
Love when you are so happy with the food it makes you a bit giddy.
It all looked very tasty and I love scampi!
For London the price wasn’t too bad either.
Thanks Gary, happy chomps to you! 😊
