Schekter the champions of consistency. Jones would have won four in a row if not retired at Silverstone. What a season Tyrrell did, they've Candy's sponsorship in mid season!
Gilles respects Ferrari's instructions by remaining wisely behind Jody Scheckter, which guarantees the world title to his teammate. An event that shows that the canadian driver's desire to win never comes at the expense of his word.
Strange few years... we'd lost Ronnie a year earlier,Lauda had retired, then Hunt retired ,Jody retired, Mario retired,Regazzoni was in a wheelchair, Jones & Reutemann retired, Fittipaldi went to America,we lost Depailler...these days the drivers (and the ultra reliable cars!) go on forever
Not to mention that the FISA vs FOCA charade was going to get completely stupid - screwing up 3 races (Jarama 1980, Kyalami 1982 & Imola 1982). But yeah definitely a weird transition in motorsports; where Fittipaldi would go on to win two Indianapolis 500s (in less attempts) while Mario would never win another one after the debacle of 1981.
Nice demonstration of the Renaults turbo power (and also the skill of Rene Arnoux). Pity Team Renaults upward rise was ruined by the firm's Marxist management in future years. Those Flat12 Ferrari's aren't too shabby, speed wise, either.
RIP sir murray walker and james hunt🏎️
