Sorry, but no. He was made very much a number 2 to Scheckter over the course of the season. Scheckter clinched this title at Monza with 3 rounds to go. After winning 2 of the first 4 races of the season, Villeneuve was put in the background by Scheckter, who did not win a race until round 6, and still clinched this championship by round 13 (Monza). Good performances in the final two rounds by Villeneuve make the final championship standings look closer than it actually was. It was not close. Uneducated Villeneuve fans love to spout this myth that the '79 championship was somehow taken from him because of team orders. This is a boldfaced lie.
