Zoo tycoon was the perfect zoo builder, just the right amount of complexity. Jurassic world evolution was basic to the point where it didn't go any deeper than building a fence and putting a dinosaur in it, and planet zoo was so in depth that you had to micro manage literally every single individual aspect of your zoo, but zoo tycoon was sat right in the middle. Just deep enough to keep you engaged without making you want to pull your hair out every time you tried to add something

Zoo Tycoon 1 & 2 are still the king of park builders, and none of the others even come close. The problem with new park builders is that they are serious/keep pushing for realism, and part of the charm of Zoo Tycoon is that it didn't push to be realistic/didn't take itself too seriously. The only recent park builder to maybe come close to Zoo Tycoon 1 & 2 is Let's Build a Zoo, and that is the only one I could maybe see as a spiritual successor. I miss Zoo Tycoon so much, and we were absolutely robbed of a proper Zoo Tycoon 3 thanks to Microsoft destroying it.
Completely agree, i played so much tycoon 2, even got 3 expansions, marine, africa adventures and extinct animals, that game has a special place, same with the og spore. Edit: Even got rollercoster tycoon too.
@@monkenana1251 Jurassic Park builder/Jurassic World The Game are a completely different experience from Zoo Tycoon, and I have sadly never played Jurassic Park : Operation Genesis. I have played Jurassic World : Evolution, and it was pretty good but it still isn't quite the same as Zoo Tycoon 1 & 2 but still fun in its own way.
"Realism" definitely detracts points from more modern zoo games like Planet Zoo. When in Zoo Tycoon, you can just immediately place down animals for a cost, in Planet Zoo you have to buy the animals, place down a holding building, place down a staff building, hire a zookeeper, and then wait as the zookeeper walks over with their guest-tier movement speed from the holding building all the way to the exhibit and finally places the animal down. And the entire way, I just think "what's the point?" You can place buildings down instantaneously, so why not do the same for the animals? Which leads into my other big complaint in that more recent games like JWE2 and Planet Zoo throw in a ton of mechanics and depth... solely for the park. While the animals just walk around and have some social and eating animations occasionally. Yeah, Zoo Tycoon 1 did the same, but that was back in _2001._ In Zoo Tycoon 2, you had animals browsing trees for fruits like durian and carrying them around/cracking them open, investigating objects you recently placed into their exhibits, displaying several different social behaviors such as calling to each other/playing chase/moving in herds, hunting and carrying around the live food lizards you put in their exhibits, calling to prey animals _from other exhibits_ like how some big cats do in real life, displaying pack hunting behaviors if you place animals like Smilodon in with bigger animals like Mastodons (way more likely to happen on sandbox wildlife parks, since they have to have at least yellow hunger and _not_ have any other food item available), building dams in the case of beavers, knocking over trees if they get upset (where-in other animals can come in and interact with the wooden shards dropped by the tree), painting on easels, building nests and constantly checking on their eggs, having young and constantly checking on them and nursing them, wallowing in water or taking dust baths which actually helps their hygiene meter, etc etc. So imo, they have their priorities backwards. Most people who play these games don't want to make an exhibit's worth of accommodations for their staff or guests or park infastructure. They could make it _optional,_ since Zoo Tycoon 2 still had stuff like the Staff Building to give staff their own personal rest area away from the guest benches, and the compost to give passive income. But when people buy a _zoo_ game, chances are they want to see the _zoo animals_ over anything else.
Zoo Tycoon 1 and 2 are like the most fun I've ever had in a zoo building game ever during my childhood, I remember me and my brother playing this game for hours on end and creating goofy and funny things all the time and seeing what the animals would do and eventually getting every expansion copy as soon as they came out just so we'd have more creatures to play with. Honestly those games to me at least, are the definition a memorable game. It just never leaves you.

100% agreed with you Beaver on the simple vs complex zoo builders. I love Planet Zoo and Prehistoric Kingdom, but for me, they're just too complex to enjoy to their fullest. I'm able to get more fun out of Jurassic World Evolution 2 bc it is more on the simple side of things. I spent hundreds of hours on both Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2, but something like Planet Zoo I'll play for a couple days, get overwhelmed, and then leave it for months.
I don't know if anyone will see this comment but I wanted to share with you how to get the secret animals/holiday decorations, and I hope this helps. Make an enclosure, and name it Cretaceous Corral to unlock Triceratops. Make an enclosure, and name it Super Croc to unlock Deinosuchus. Make an enclosure, and name it Xanadu to unlock unicorns. Place a mermaid statue in an aquarium tank to unlock mermaids. Pause the game on Oct 31st in game time to unlock pumpkins for decoration. Pause the game on Dec 25th in game time to unlock Christmas Trees for decoration, and the Reindeer love them. Just a fun little extra name a guest in the Zoo Alfred H, and a flock of birds will attack everyone. All of these are exclusive to Zoo Tycoon 1.
You can unlock the Trike, Denio and Unicorn permanently by completing the breeding giant pandas, breeding the T.Rex and resort island scenarios. It’s nice that you can unlock them early regardless though.

Aquariums did try but the sharks did not live long, dont know if a big circular Aquarium with walls that the sharks will see could work, probably too expansions and impractical.

I "played" Planet Zoo for about 4 hours. When I say play, I mean I struggled for an hour, paused the game and watched youtube videos on how to play the game, then uninstalled it and went back to playing Zoo Tycoon 2 until JWE2 came out.
