I taught myself to can 2 years ago at 60. Although I'm thankful to have learned that skill, with my current health condition, freezing is much easier and better. It is good to know you are able to grow seeds from frozen. Thank you.
@MrBubblestheBudgie
Absolutely NO reason to be, 'scared.'
My sweet mother used to cut any color bell 🫑 peppers into fairly ling strips, place them all into a good ziplock bag, then ..... fill bag 75% full of water, & place in the freezer.
Zero freezer burn, looked wonderful when using them for recipes. ❤
I tried freezing them last year. I wasn't too happy with the softness of them in salads, but the flavor of them cooked in stews and soups was like fresh from the garden. Great idea.
When you cook them the skins will automatically come off & rise to the top . Just skim them off if it bothers you.
In 1973 some known cook said.freezing tomatoes with the skin on was.LAZY & horrible. I had 5 kids over a 17 year spread. I took the easy way!!
Salads? Nah. Soups, stews etc.YES!!
Thank you for answering my question about growing tomato seeds that were frozen! I froze some tomatoes last week just for planting next spring. I also froze some bell peppers and sweet onions. I wash and slice my onions and bell peppers and freeze them in the same bag, and they are ready for fajitas, stir fry, etc...
Robbie, do you have a video of you making your salsa? I would love to watch it if you do. 😊❤❤😊
I am recovering from throat cancer and radiation has left me unable to taste anything. I have cherry tomatoes and peppers ready to harvest. They will now be frozen and used when taste buds come back. They were planted before I was diagnosed. Thank you for your info again.
Wow, thanks so much for your wonderful time saving tip Robbie! I was going to can tomatoes today from my garden and was seriously dreading it and decided not to, but now i can just freeze my tomatoes!? Easy❤
I don't trim my tomatoes, i agree with you i think i get more harvest this way.
Agreed. I trimmed them last year and got a very small harvest. This year, we can eat them fast enough.
Missouri is hot and humid during tomato season. Fungus was a problem until I started trimming sun leaves off the bottom and anything that made it crowded. No, I don't take off what people call suckers, they make tomatoes too! And my sweet yellow cherry tomato spent the winter inside like a house plant. I've over-wintered my favorite Anaheim pepper two winters. I love free veggies!
One year I decided to do an experiment to trim my cheery tomato plants. Lots of labor work during the growing season. Yes, I had bigger cherry tomatoes but the flavor….was kind of different. I missed the flavor of smaller chewy tomatoes. Obviously it was up to personal preference. From that point on, I have stopped trimming my cherry tomatoes plants unless they are out of hand. Then, I keep some of the suckers/branches to grow more if I want to 😊 or I compost them.
Thank you Robbie for sharing your video. Homemade salsa 😋 that's the best. Hagd ❣️
I need to try sun gold tomatoes, this is the first year i tried black cherry tomatoes, they're delicious.
My Sungolds have turned into a jungle! Be prepared! 😂 Meanwhile, I do pic daily and I grew from seed!
I wasn't able to find any sun gold tomatoes, but I did find some Sun Sugar cherry tomatoes and they are the best yellow cherry tomatoes that I have ever eaten, and I am fixing to be 60 lol. It will be the only yellow cherry tomato that I will ever grow again.
@@jwater63 that is great to know, thank you, and you know the old saying is age is just a number, so in your mind you could be 20. Happy gardening.
Such a wonderful idea! THANK YOU
I wish I would have done this sooner. I’m going to try growing fall cherry tomatoes here in Texas. Right now it’s way to hot but, I’m going to try fall ones and implement your idea! Thank you! 💜
Such a great idea - I didn’t think tomatoes could be directly frozen!! It always seems like everything ripens at once, so this is so helpful. Thanks!!
Perfect timing, thx. Just scored 5-8 lb bag of Roma tomatoes. 😄
HI ROBBIE. I'VE BEEN IN CLASS LEARNING. JUST FIGURED YOU HAVE SO MANY COMMENTS TO READ, I WOULD GIVE YOU A REST. LOVE YALL. ❤
Our tomatoes are done in Texas.
Done in Arizona too
I've done this with all of my herbs and veggies. Love this method.
At the end of the growing season last year my neighbor told me I could have all his remaining tomatoes! I had so many so I decided to try freezing them while (romas). They held up beautifully. I made sauce in February with them and it tasted like summer!!
What a great neighbor! That worked out perfect for you. So easy to freeze tomatoes and they taste great! Thanks for sharing ❤️😊
Thank you so much!! I never knew you could freeze tomatoes!
you can freeze your peppers that way too for salsas soups and stews. And guess what next spring you will find all kinds of baby cherry tomato plants a sproutin, I transplant them they;re so tasty. thanks Its mind blowing the life force within a seed seemingly dormant for years then can spring to life.
Very true, I do peppers this way as well and you can always remove the seeds later that were frozen in the peppers and grow them😊
Oh my Robbie, I learned something new today!
Thank You for sharing how to freeze tomatoes & peppers 🌶️. Great to know you can grow the seeds after they have been frozen.
So AWESOME! To know the "how to" from you.
Thank You Robbie!
Much love from South Africa 🌍🇿🇦❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You’re awesome. I’m 73 and didn’t realize tomatoes froze !! I’m going to freeze mine for spaghetti sauce this winter. Wow. I hope Roma freezes well. I have a lot of them on the vines. They’re still green though.
Thanks!
For the information
You are so very welcome! Thank You very much for the Super Thanks 😊 this is really greatly appreciated, again Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You're just a fountain of gardening tips Robbie! And what a great sense of humor. ;) I'm so glad you said not to prune...my tomatoes are growing crazy but I'm just going to let them & put more supports up. Also I'm so thankful about the freezing! Thank you. ;)
Thank you. I always have a ton of cherry tomatoes.
I’m going to give this a try, I’ve been blanching and peeling my tomatoes. But it’s been so hot to do it.
Aweee...sweet Kitty. She is probably still eating her way through the brocolli fields across the rainbow Bridge. ❤
Those tomatoes will taste so good in the winter! I never prune my tomatoes either, except for bottom leaves touching the ground or yellowing or unhealthy looking leaves. I’ve also always frozen my extra tomatoes too. If you freeze the larger tomatoes and then run them under water while they’re still frozen, the skins will slip right off.
I found that dicing tomatoes and putting them in ice cube trays makes them in more ready to use sizes. I just put the tomato cubes in a freezer ziplock bag and pull out what I need.
Black Cherry tomatoes are terrific! And Sun Gold are my favorite cherries.
Perfect timing! I'm getting an abundance of cherry tomatoes! ❤
I never even heard of freezing tomatoes. I still have a few cherry tomatoes & will try it. Robbie you are full of information/thank you for everything you do! Love all the videos!❤
I’m using bell peppers from my freezer from 2019! Still perfect! Jalapeño too ❤
Perfect for salsas or cooking. Even pizza 🍕
There is a time to can, such as salsa and tomato juice but when 300 tomato plants are doing well the freezer does just fine. I make pizzas every Friday night and make the sauce from my tomato's regardless of the time of year and the flavor is always amazing. 😊
so simple! Glad I saw this. We grow cherry tomatoes as fruit fly generally leaves them alone and they grow everywhere on the property! I was cooking them and putting in jars in the freezer as way too lazy to can :) I have chillis galore so I'll pick them tomorrow.
Robbie your Awesome. Love the Simplicity of this
The best tomatoes I got this year with the incredible heat was from a volunteer cherry tomato. Got over 10 pounds of them. Amazing for here in the Arizona desert.
Thank you for sharing ! Kitty💕
Awesome!!❤❤❤❤
Hi 👋 Robbie, I have never frozen tomatoes but….I harvested my first tomato a few days ago and took out the seeds and put them in water for planting next year. Will be drying them tomorrow when the jell sacks around the seeds separate.
Thanks Robbie! I will freeze a bunch tomorrow. Cheers!!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Very good informaion.
I have had volunteer tomatoes come up from the previous year (apparently they got lost out there), and we do get cold winters in zone 6b. I think I will try this. I don't have enough for canning, but I do have tomatoes out there ripening.
I freeze corn off cob and green sliced peppers as well I never froze tomatoes
Thanks Robbie, looks easy to do. Love Kitty ✨🌷❤️
Thank you 🍅
I used to freeze my tomatoes like that, once they start thawing the skin comes right off! Now I have no freezer space😁
Ditto
Thank You. Easy simple. Great
Can you freeze full size tomatoes too?
Yes!! ❤
People prune their cherry tomatoes because they’ve always heard to prune tomatoes but that advice is for growing large slicers, cherry tomatoes should never be pruned except for health (bottom stems or thinning in blight prone areas).
Very true 😊
And Great Idea on Freezing the cherry tomatoes! But, Please, I asked a question a while ago .
What do you use to cover your plants when you made your own (stakes and irrigation tubing) and you had a cover.
I have opossum's and tree rats that like to eat my cherry tomatoes. I would like to protect them. I
bought stakes and tubing already.
I just need to know what to put around it to protect my tomatoes. Thanks!
I'd use my handy dandy food saver
Ty!!!
Thanks for sharing this video. I'm wondering if you could freeze hot pepper and then plants seeds from frozen pepper.
The downfall though is if your freezer or hydro goes out you lose everything an jarred goods you don't have to worry about that however jars cost money too as supposed to bags
I have never done rhis. We always ate our cherries. I do the blanching and stuff withe big ones.and freeze those. Might try with just one bag
Can you do that freeze beef steak tomatoes like you do with the cherry tomatoes
What about the bigger tomatoes? Same process? Cut them up? TY for this video
For very large tomatoes, I cut them in Quarters, put on tray, freeze them and then store the same way 😊
Hmmm. That’s interesting.
No more hummingbird tired of birds 🦅.
Hey Robbie,
Did you dump the bucket of nails outside to keep Gary busy with his toy?😂😂😂😂😂😂
Does this work with cucumbers an green peppers & other things
Do you freeze larger tomatoes or just the cherry/grape size?
CAN I DO this also with the bigger tomatoes?
Can I do this method with carrots?
❤❤
♥️ & Tytyty Robbie❣️
I do have a question about your squash and Zucchini s ...how do you get them to give both female and male flowers & gettem to open cuz idk which sex the flowers are they just shivel up & dried on their stems during the resent rain storms 🥺😭
❤
❤❤❤
Can you freeze larger ones?
I cut them up and freeze them.
How come you freeze them in a bowl first and then put them in a bag instead of just putting them in a bag and laying them flat and freezing them?
Probably so that the tomatoes don’t stick together once she puts them in the bag.
Make Salsa 🥫🌶🧅🧂
When my frozen tomatoes defrosted they were totally mush. I had to throw them all out. Do u know what I did wrong?? I defrosted them in the refrigerator.
Me too, threw them all away
Maybe these are not meant for slicing. Why didn’t you make sauce, or salsa? Seems a waste to throw them away.
Should have used the mushy ones in spaghetti sauce.
Frozen tomatoes aren't really good for fresh eating type of stuff like Chunky salsa or slicing. They are however, good for spaghetti sauce, ketchup, blended salsa, things like that.
These tomatoes are not meant for slicing , they will not have the firmness of a fresh tomato .but they are wonderful in soups stews , pasta sauces, cooked salsa and anything you would have canned with the fresh tomatoes.. I save them up and do my canning when the garden season has slowed down and it's cooler outside
My cherry tomatoes don’t get that far we eat them like fruit 😊maybe if I get more then we eat I would freez it , when tomatoes are really In cheapest ,I buy and freeze so we can use it all winter less using can 🤷🏼♀️I freeze it in the bag ! Why do you freeze it before ?you doing double work 😏
So they will not stick together, each tomato is then an individual when dropped in the bag frozen, works better for me, but of course you do it the way it works for you 😊❤️ I do grapes this same way
Freeze? LMFAO!!!!!
OMG a 2 minute video stretched out way too long!
