    I’ve learned finding the temp that’s right for ur hair is really important. I’m on this journey now. I use 375 and i can put heat on my hair multiple times that week with no issues…and i think heating the hair consistently is part of the training…but one time over 425 and I’ll see heat damage. I consider my whole head loosening over time and handling humidity better heat training…i think a patch of straight hair in my curly hair is heat damage.

    • @sierralafaye
      @sierralafaye  2 года назад +7

      Yes! Finding the right temp for your hair is key! I would just be careful with putting heat on your hair multiple times in the same week; I did that during high school and my hair seemed to take it just fine, and one day it was like it just started breaking non-stop and boom my hair was super short. Just make sure to keep a close eye on your hair and the moment you see anything start to change consider changing/adding to your routine!

    I think I got my last perm in 2014 I wanna say, only because I didn't feel like putting it in my hair and I felt that I could get my hair just as straight with just a straightener. From then to 2019 I guess I was heat trained but I didn't know that was a thing. I would wash and straighten my hair once a month and I trimmed only when I thought I had damage or if I could see split ends. Lol I remember when I seen my first split end and I was amazed because I didn't think it would actually look like a end split in two but It did. I don't know what I expected it to look like. Anyways, I was heat trained for all those years and my hair did get to armpit length which is the longest it has ever been and I was barely taking care of it. I didn't even know about deep conditioners either. Now though I've been staying away from heat and have cut off my heat trained hair, wash and DC weekly or bi-weekly and already my hair is back to armpit length. Granted I transitioned for over a year and didn't big chop at all but I feel like my hair is flourishing more now than it was back when my hair was straight. Now I wasn't really taking care of it back then but I'd had straight hair for as long as I could remember and even when I was going to a salon as a teen my hair still barely touched my shoulders. Now I feel like I can attain my goal of waist length in maybe a year or two if I don't have any set backs. I also only straighten my hair twice a year now for a length check and to get a good trim of my ends. I struggled with keeping my hair moisturized when it was straight but I don't have that problem now. I do however like watching videos like these to learn from should I ever consider going back though I don't miss having straight hair at all, well at least now that I've embraced my shrinkage. 😁

      Thanks so much for sharing your journey! I sometimes contemplate going to my 100% natural hair & it's amazing to hear how much your hair is flourishing without the heat. I know when I tried to wear my hair in its natural state I had so much breakage and I went right back to straightening my hair. However, if I ever decide to try to go back down that road again, I'll def think about your journey to help encourage me :)

    What do you when you want to go swimming or it's very humid outside? Or you get stuck in the rain? Also do you straighten it right after washing it ?

    • @sierralafaye
      @sierralafaye  4 года назад +3

      Great questions! I usually always straighten it right after I wash it, it's rare that I'll wear my hair in its "natural" state. And when I want to go swimming, I go swimming, usually my hair will be in a protective style when I know in advance, but if not i'll still go swimming with my natural hair and just wash it afterwards. When it's very humid outside I've learned that the keratin treatment for me is amazing from keeping my hair from frizzing too much!

    Hi Sierra, thanks for the tips, I have fine high density hair with relaxed ends but 4c resistant roots. Because my hair is fine I prefer blow-drying over straightening to maintain volume, could hair be heat trained with a dryer on a low/cooler setting or is a straightener and/or high heat dryer essential?

    • @sierralafaye
      @sierralafaye  3 года назад +3

      Hey! So heat training is essentially using heat to alter the curl pattern to become loser, so if you find the dryer on a low/cooler setting to do the trick for you, then you may not need the higher heat!

    i always wanted to have straight hair, but i hate perms, i didn't know much about heat training. I have a lot of trouble with moisture however, when my hair is straight, it gets so dry and brittle, even though it's sleek and fluffy, i dont even use a blow dryer, i use big 3 inch hair rollers to stretch my natural hair before i straighten it, yet it's still crispy. What would you recommend?

    • @sierralafaye
      @sierralafaye  3 года назад +2

      Have you tried doing a blow out on your hair before you flat iron it, that will def make a huge difference in your straight hair results. I’ve learned that the secret to a good silk press is the blow dry process.

      I kinda figured it out, today i straightened my hair, and i tried to put grease in it thinly, just enough to thoroughly coat my hair. Oils and greases are NOT moisture, they are sealents, but i find that grease has helped to keep the moisture out of my dry straight hair and keep it that way. Grease has helped so much with how crispy and dry my straight hair was without it, and im also finding it great when my hair is curly. (I have high porosity, once dyed, 4a hair, bra strap length, fine strands with normal hair density)

      She’s right though. It is damage. But her hair is flourishing and beautiful. Personally, when my hair was heat trained, I couldn’t grow it past my shoulders. And I was only letting my stylist do it every two weeks and was very gentle with my hair. My strands are just too fine to withstand the damage. This won’t work for everyone, but if it works for some people then cool.
