I feel for you as I can see the loss of Bandit is still so painful for you. I’m giving you a mental hug now. Capri had definitely made leaps and bounds with the flock. She’s amazing with them. Your aviaries work fantastically well. You have thought it out and there are happy birds inside them. As a non bird owner they seem very content. Just please take care and stay safe.

Yesterday I got a gift from my uncle.. It's a 15 day old baby cockatiel. I asked my uncle for a bird because your birds are so cool and your toucan video where he was cleaning his beak made me fell in love with him and all other birds. But when he gave it to me I didn't expect him to give me a baby one and the first thing I thought was I'm not ready for this. But I still accepted because he told me that he'll guide me. He has a background with taking care of birds and chickens. He told me how to handfeed it and the do's and don'ts and even gave me a 1 hour lecture about the birds and the cockatiel specially. I'm really excited for this new chapter in my life. I probably won't even imagine owning a bird if I haven't seen your videos. I'm really thankful for finding your channel and the videos you put up like this video which will be helpful for the future cage and/or aviary of my lil' baby.. xoxo

Sandra P my uncle told me that he/she was pulled out of her parents because one of them started plucking the pinfeathers so my uncle decided to remove the parent bird that is plucking the pinfeather and left only one but he says that the one bird that was left didn't feed he/she enough. He told me that maybe for the reason the other bird was not feeding him/her enough is that the previous owner of the pair used to take their babies once they are 10 days old. But for the plucking one he is still trying to find the cause.
Edit: this is the first baby of the pair since uncle got them

Jamie, I remember last summer when you and Dave had cement poured for the bottom of the cages. I also remember about the wheels and am glad that has worked out really well for you. I was also curious if you ever talked to the cage manufacturer about your disappointment with the quality of what they sell now. I'm asking because I used to work for a Fortune 500 management consulting firm, and the one thing I kept hearing when a problem had occurred, how communication had broken down between the customer and upper management i.e. They weren't informed about the problem. Most companies want to do right by their customers. Im so impressed how much you strive to make your birds healthy, happy and content, and it shows. So sorry to see how much you miss Bandit, but I believe with all my heart he comes to visit often. Magic I believe has a way of showing us there is more to life than just the five senses. Great video, Thanks for sharing.

    • @DaveWomach
      @DaveWomach 4 года назад +8

Dave here... We did communicate with the original manufacturer... a lot... from 2002-2017, but the quality just got worse. They were actually quite difficult to deal with and emotionally it became too taxing. To them it was just a cage, but for us it is about the quality of life and safety of our parrots. We now are actively referring customers to Corners Limited. www.cornerslimited.com. They're the ones that make that really big cage, but everything is customizable and the quality is great!

I have a koala forest 6 doors down & I can hear galahs in there as I'm writing this now. They're often seen on grass paths next to our roads. I live in a beautiful coastal town that has many beaches. I walk my dogs on the beach early mornings & often see galahs on the sand. I have a few pics I've taken of them on the sand, wish I could share them here!

Due to your suggestion we took Racal Cockatiel to vet Lisa Hsuan near us. Most of her questions about his health were about how much sunlight he gets. It is so very important, and really affected Gabriel my husband because he did not recognize how much this meant for Rascal's health. On poop: since we started being more consistent with the big meal in the morning (your pellets and some seed) and evening (your year round feeding system) we have a different problem. Rascal has these massive (for a cockatiel) poops in the morning and evening and almost none in the 15-20 minute range most cockatiels have.
Am going to get it tested, however I really feel it is due to when he takes the food in and lets it out.
    Good job on the aviaries!

I've had my Amazon for 42 of his 43 years and he hates going outside! He gets so stressed out he gets "bitey" and he has bitten down to the bone on someone's finger, so I get very nervous and cautious myself when he's like that. I've had the opportunity a couple of times to have him outside in a large aviary, but he kept getting down and banging on the door until I let him back in the house.
He also hates hats and one of the 3 times he's bitten me is when I came back from a trip and was still wearing a Tilley hat when I reached in his cage to pick him up. It was the first time he'd ever bitten me since I owned him for at least ten years by then, and I'm not sure who was more surprised him or me. He needed major cuddling for about 10 minutes while I was bleeding all over from a major finger wound! LOL It took me a few days to figure out it was the hat that caused the problem.

I use butcher paper on a moveable plywood base (4'X8') (better protection for my house floor where my aviaries are) and I just go in and roll up the paper and waste and put it into a compost pile. It is completely compostable and there is no waste if you can set up a compost out of the way in the backyard.

As a dog person..checking their poop is essential to! Especially when on a raw diet. You can see if they had too much of one thing one day. Also for client dogs it’s how you are 100% sure the dog did not get into things it shouldn’t have, or is okay with whatever food or reward you give.

You probably don't check comments here anymore, but an idea I had for instead of the paper under the aviaries is to use some sort of stronger material you can clean and the birds can't destroy.
    1) Vinyl flooring rolls, usually for garages. Either cut them into sizes that fit between the wheels or cover the whole area in it and put the aviaries on top.
    2) Chair matts are pretty durable, maybe if you can find some in bigger sizes

I know it’s time consuming n you really have to put 100% attention to them.
That’s great that you can move the birds around so they can get a better look around n not look at the same thing all the time.😊. You’re just wonderful with your birds! 😉😎. Your heart ❤️ is big n made of gold. ❤️😉😍😊

You could use large plastic tarps (like builders use) to go under your aviaries and when you move them you could just power hose them off. Kinds regards from the UK and all keep safe.

Might check around to see if anyone can make customize plastic trays to go under. Pull out, sweep off, and then power wash. Will take a little more time, but less waste and a one time purchase. Plexiglass might work.

The birds can chew through that and will (they’ve gone to town on various plastic travel carriers) so I don’t fully trust that material but great thought. The plexi glass may work though. 🤔

Have you ever considered rotating them over a part of your yard like a rabbit or chicken tractor? No clean up necessary(except for chunks of toys)and will fertilize your grass. You move each cage to a new spot in a grid pattern (like you have in your garage).

  • @angelaglenn62

I use clear office chair mat under mine large wet/dry vac for toy bar then roll off to power wash. No paper waste. Or you can use 5x8 sheets of plexiglass. Good luck

It's so cute seeing your daughter playing with the birds! It's so cute!
Also: I let my birds play outside often, and I like to keep their cage outside sometimes when it's nice out, but my neighbors (who rlly don't have any knowledge about let's or birds) keep complaining saying birds should never be outside and now they're threatening to calla animal control of we keep doing it so like I don't know what to do. I guess I can't take them outside as often as I used to :

Composting is the answer. Paper, bird poop, toy pieces (since they are not plastic) and dropped food can make great compost.

I convert EVERYTHING to having wheels:) Harbor Freight has a great selection, and great sales especially with the 20% off coupon. Home Depot has a pretty good selection with good prices as well. I am a thrift store junkie and find myself attracted to things that have wheels like a bird is attracted to shiny things. On something that falls apart or breaks or is just not wanted anymore, I will rescue the wheels/casters. Very important safety note...use wheels that can lock, so no ones leans against something or goes to sit and it scoots out from under them. The guy who put you on wheels did a great job., something on that scale def a professional need. I don't have birds, so am just talking about general furniture or planters that I put wheels on, but the joy in how easy it is to move anything, is shared! !I would say always pay extra for getting wheels in you can, it is worth it. Target sells a pack of four 3-4 inch casters , two with locks (locking wheels go on diagonal corners for stability) on the aisle that sells wire shelving units, for $14, Lowe's has em for $20, probably same price at Home Depot. I love all you do Jamie! I had a coclatiel as a kid, and would love a bird but won't because of the education you provide on what it is really like, so thank you thank you for sharing. I got to see flocks of Cockatoos in the neighborhoods of Victoria, AU .What a treat for this American who at the time (2000) just knew them as "Baretta Birds"...my AU friends just called them pests. That show sadly probably put too many birds in homes as a whim. (Google it , kids) I got started watching you after getting hooked on Gotcha the Cockatoo...Katie is so soft and gentle and safety minded like you. First thing I noticed is that bird girls have pink and purple hair:) I got to spend time up close with the large parrots in Corpus Christi, TX, worked for Marie Colson who must have had 40-50 birds. I saw quite a few pet birds in trees down there, the climate sorta tropical, I guess they could handle the weather there better than other areas. I think it is interesting you and Gotcha's mom live in northern states. You both bring warmth and sunshine to so many through your videos. Thank you for sharing the education and safety so clearly and honestly,, and sharing the joy of these birds.

Wow Jamie. You remind me of a younger me which being young had so much energy, not to mention I HAVE TO have my home in order which means everything has its place etc etc.
I hope this vidio finds you someone who has a great new idea for the poop issue as I know that would drive me crazy because only after a few poops I would be wanting a clean sheet of paper laid down. Looking at how you keep your home reflects on how you take care of everything in your life
It makes life so much more easier when things are in order right!
I felt so bad for you when you brought up Bandit trying so hard to pull back on your emotions
Hopefully somebody who like you living with a family of birds with similar confusions has something new and fresh to share with you moving forward.
On a side note, Wow does Rocky eat all that fruit in 1 day? It looked so yummy.

There is compostable butcher paper. You could look into getting that. Alternatively, if it's not illegal in your state, since you live in an open area, you could get or make a burn barrel to burn the paper. If you can find it big enough though, the compostable would be the most eco-friendly, I think
