IIRC they have a gas stove, so beef fat dripping onto it is pretty common way for fire to happen. Smoke alarm because the beef fat getting too much heat and smoking because they were likely cooking on a much higher heat than they should have due to the "speed" of the challenge.

I used to work as a line cook/griller at a Shake Shack, and the non stop orders are real. We had 32 patties down on the flat top multiple times in a day. Couldn't imagine how hard it would be to keep up with orders only being able to cook 2 patties at a time
