Nothing anybody can tell me will ever convince me that anybody other than a literal wizard can land the plane in Top Gun. I just think that the world contains more literal wizards than I used to think.

To be fair, I've spoken to one Navy pilot who did indeed say that landing a plane on an aircraft carrier is one of the hardest things to do.

The rear seat is not a copilot, but a naval version of a back seat driver. Can't fly the plane, but tells the pilot where to go and what to shoot at.
Also an Odometer measures distance, not speed. We'd call that a Tacometer. The more tacos you eat, the more it burns after in rear nozzle.

Tom Cruise has rules in his contracts that they can't use his likeness in other things, so even if we ever got the Top Gun Beach Volleyball video game that we deserve, it wouldn't feature Maverick. They'd have to just replace him with a playable jet.

Friend, I love your profile pic. One of my all-time favorite memes. And that's really at the heart of what I love about Family Dog. Two of my all-time favorite things in this world are my family and dogs (that meme is like, third). When you put them together, what do you get? Family Dog, of course. It's just simple math, that's all.

@@NESFriend Thanks for the friendly explanation, friend! Just a couple of days ago I saw a commenter who had the same profile picture as me, which also made me smile, so I think I understand the sensation quite well. :)

Top Gun was really a very Early NES game for what it wanted to appear to be. Unlike Garry Kitchen's Garry Wiffle Ball Tank, it wasn't even be an arcade style simulator. It had to pretend to be a simulator (a simulator simulator).
The first game was really common. The second one? Not so much, probably because it arrived at the end of 1990 in the US and the it wasn't nearly as impressive anymore.
Top Gun was a bit of a pain to control, the serious problem was that we got tired of it really quick. Yes, games were not deep back then, but this one had especially little to offer. It was more like an arcade game, you saw the best stuff right away.
One positive is that it seemed to play better with the QuickShot Joystick, a controller which was largely useless elsewhere.

I loved both games and yes was able to land, but not by following the instructions because they were crap. Either way for a jet fighter pov game circa 89, these were pretty good for a at home console.

Apparently there are at least 18 different Top Gun video games. I've heard/read that they all range from pretty bad to mediocre.
The ONLY ones I'm familiar with are the 1st NES game and Top Gun: Fire at Will.
TG:FaW was on PC and PS1.
It's nothing spectacular, BUT it is one of the games filled with glorious live-action FMV scenes. And James Tolkan himself reprises his role from the movie to yell at you the whole game.
They made a direct sequel called Top Gun: Hornet's Nest. And James tolkan is in that one too.
