  • In this video, Tonal Vision audio expert Riley Butter explains how to use the Sound Devices 633 6-Input Compact Field Mixer and 10-Track Digital Recorder, which is designed for production audio mixing and recording on set and in the field. Sound Devices is known for the quality of its preamps and converters, as well as overall construction and professional features. We purchased this unit because we sometimes need to capture, mix and record high quality audio in the field. Our previous Sound Devices 302 mixer left us at the mercy of a separate recorder.

It sounds trivial but the one minor niggle I have is the dinky little sliding power on/off switch. It looks cheap compared to the rest of the unit and inspires little confidence that it won’t break at some point. Because it’s both tiny and slightly recessed I have to deftly use a finger nail to slide it on and off. This is not only finicky but within a short time the decal paint has scraped off. Just bad design. I would much prefer a reasonably sized rotary on/off knob with a solid position click. Little things like this are irritating when you are under time pressure.

Hey, I’m the guy in the video! I think I understand at least part of what you’re asking. If you press the menu button, you can use the headphone knob to get into the menu titled “recorder.” From there, you can change the settings of how and whether the devices records to the SD card or Compact Flash card. To make sure the device mixes everything down to a simple left-right stereo file when recording, choose “WAV Poly (LR Only)” or “MP3 (LR)” for whichever cards you’re recording to. It has to be set this way before starting to record though, or else you would probably need a computer to change it to left-right stereo! And about the EQ on this device… it’s a bit limited. It has high-pass filters that are useful for many situations, but it doesn’t have anywhere near the versatility for EQ that mixers specifically made for music do. This one certainly can be used for music, but it’s *more* suited to recording sound for film and tv, so it doesn’t give very much control over EQ. I hope this answers your question!
