  • Captain Benny Blanco travels to the Space Coast of Florida to fish the famed waters of Mosquito Lagoon. He is joined by Flip Pallot as the pair target redfish and spotted seatrout. The waters and fishery of Mosquito Lagoon and the Northern Indian River Lagoon are suffering from loss of habitat, as well as other historically great fishing destinations around the state are. Aaron Adams with Bonefish & Tarpon Trust discuss how they’re combating this issue with the Bee Gum habitat project.

Nasa could easily dig and manage an inlet just SE of the primary launch pad, and NPS can dig and manage one just north of Playalinda. These would greatly help flush and maintain the salinity and grunge. Circulation is necessary and critical as is fresh "non stagnant" ocean/river water. Easily a 4 to 6 month project to dig, then Bridge would be another 4 months. We did a culvert improvement on 3 salt lagoons here in SE GA where we had "turnovers" and fishkills consistently, but after planning properly, there has been consistent fresh flushings, normal tides, and no more fish kills of the rare Tarpon, Snook, and Mangroves that normally are not supposed to be here. Quality is the only answer...

Our fish here in the lagoons stay in them year round and spawn in them, only place in the world like it. Creating an inlet and making it total will completely change their spawning habits and could decimate the ecosystem in a totally different way.

Great show, this is what is needed in fishing right now. This is what is going to help our water and fisheries for the foreseeable future not only in FL but the rest of the country. Awesome job Cpt Benny, keep up the good work!

Awesome first episode guys! Flip is legendary, I remember watching him as a kid when he did Walker's. Thank you for for once again bringing conservation to the forefront! Looking forward to see many more episodes of this show! Hoping with our new governor, and all the new momentum we are seeing, that we are now on the upward turn that our fisheries so badly need!

l grew up in Cocoa , and my family belonged to the Brevard county Audubon society..this was during the late 1950's and early 1960 . Also during this time Allan Cruickshank and his wife who were part of the Brevard Audubon Society went to Washington DC and shook every tree possible and with the help of President Kennedy got the cape turned into a national seashore . That is a major part and reason you can even fish mosquito lagoon in its pristine condition today . My dad made a great wooden flats boat , and every Christmas we would go out into the river and lagoons counting and banding the nesting birds . the Society always would win the nation wide Christmas bird count . with # 2 being around south padre island . This was a major big deal . The reason they won is because there were lots of different birds at the cape area that would come there for the winter . The Cruickshanks knew every bird by sight and sound .

Enjoyed the show very much. I grew up fishing the IRL when it was just called the Indian River. If you were going to get specific, what 3, 4, or 5 things do you think need to happen to restore the Indian River / Mosquito Lagoon to something like what they once were (which was a grassy and sand bottomed, clean water, fish filled estuary)?

This is a great video. I, like a lot of anglers, remember watching Flip’s TV series. This was like catching up with an old friend. The IRL was neglected for too many years for there to be a quick fix. The 1/2 cent lagoon tax, sjrwmd and fdep are flooding projects with grant monies that make positive impact to this estuary. I’ve been involved in a few. I wish these youngsters could have witnessed the IRL back in the 60’s. We had oyster beds all over the lagoon and were the Speckled Sea Trout Capital of the world. Having this magnificent lagoon was the draw for all the development that has weakened it. Stay the course and we can continue to bring the IRL back to it glory.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. We try to do what’s right and it back fires on us. *The State mandates a reclaimed water program for municipalities and now the report show those are areas that have higher nutrient levels contributing to the IRL problem. We create manatee zones when they’re at record low numbers and they come back strong and contribute to the lack of sea grasses needed for habitat.
But the whole world wants to live in our little paradise and that comes at a cost.
A lot is being done with fertilizer ordinances, baffle boxes to catch debris, septic to sewer projects, restricting run off from developed properties. Hopefully we’ll see better days for the IRL and Mosquito Lagoon soon.

Climate and season change has a lot to do with it, but the biggest difference since fishing as a kid in the 1970s and 80's is the water quality. The sprawl and population growth just brings ruin to the resources.
