I haven't seen this jam since 1981- I think that's when it was shown on TV. I remember not thinking much of Les Paul at the time but as the years went by, I learned to appreciate who he was and what he'd done. I got to meet him in 1988 at Fat Tuesday's in NYC. Very nice guy--very gracious--I got his autograph.
That was really enjoying to watch...thanks for posting this, I don't enjoy too many guitar jams/duels...it turns into everyone trying to play at once and to hell what the other guy is playing or doing.....Les Paul and Beck were having a two way conversation...bloody brilliant
Thank YOU, rknrne, for uploading this. What a THRILL it is to see Jeff with his childhood hero - "The Wizard of Waukesha"! Les's having a great time and is right in his element! Please don't reduce it to America vs. Britain.
This is old age rock, Les Paul had about 7O years old, suffered arthritis in his fingers and a problem in his ear called Meniére syndrom, he had a 40' s guitar with a 40's sound and 40' s technique ( almost no bending of strings at all) and even so he still had the crave to play guitar... in front of a very much brilliant young Jeff beck with a guitar and amplifier of the 70's. !
I have never understood the supposed Fender/Gibson rivalry in the minds of musicians. Neither guitar is really superior to the other. I can say this because I am a luthier it is my profession to know instruments. They are different tools for different jobs. To me that argument is as silly as a bunch of painters sitting around arguing about which brush head is the most useful. Banter aside very cool love to see both these guys play. We miss you Les!
@claypigeon77 You are so right. Billy is an amazing (underrated) guitar player in his own right, but he is also a class act as a musician and human being. He understood that this jam was not about him, and stepped back to a supporting role. I remember hearing him speak about this show in an interview. He was asked to host the premiere of Rock and Roll Tonight, and given the freedom to do what he wanted. He wanted to do a show about guitarists, and chose two that he greatly admired.
If this is about 1983, then Les is about 68 y.o in this video - only a year older than Jeff Beck is now. WOW - using Les' and Jeff's physical appearance and abilities as a gauge, I don't see why Jeff won't be playing well into his 100's. :) Jeff looks younger today then Les did at the time, and Les was able to keep laying until his mid 90's.
@rknrne Amen! El Becko played a Les Paul in the original Jeff Beck Group. He switched between Pauls and Strats in Beck, Bogert and Appice and the Blow By Blow/Wired period. Nowadays Gibson has a deal with him---he signs and plays fifty of the reproduction '54 LP modified Standard Beck used on Blow By Blow, and they sell for $25,000 or thereabout.
Jeff can really do it all. You might also like "Jeff piano sax jam" from the red white and blues sessions at abbey road, or his playing on "key to the highway" with bb king.
I remember seeing this on TV when I was very young. I always thought Les Paul unplugged Jeff beck because he was blowing him away. Funny I didin't remember Billy Squier being involved - or maybe not.
I dont know about that. They have soundmen on tv shows ..blame them. Check the expression on the sax players face. I think he was enjoying JB's style of play. his solo just b4 the attack (5:00)w tremolo & harmonics is still one of my favorite licks.
@thailow117 on the blow by blow cover? yeah its jeff beck with his oxblood gibson les paul, just search for you tube vids, there is a video of him on a 70's tv show playing that les paul...
At 7:46 Les grabs a chunk of Billy's hair. Checking to see if it was real ?!! Good thing 'He' was playing a Les Paul or it might have gotten ugly.. ; ]
music is such a rough sport ..... 2:oo minute penalty for roughing Mr LP ....
Why isn't this sort of stuff on TV? Why do we have to put up with constant bullshit from ignorant program directors, when we can view two highly evolved souls be so accurate and bring so much joy to our spirit? These MTV folks are missing out. Maybe they think we can't pay for it. Naw, I think like 99.9% of the gross population they just have a lead ear and little or no sense of rhythm, Gabe P.
RIP Lester Paul, You wont be forgotten
i saw les paul 10 years ago at his regular tuesday night gig at iridium in nyc... he was 81 and could still shred..
RIP Les, You changed the way we rock today.

When Les jammed, everyone else should law down the guitars in respect, you cant beat the man..RIP Les.

My two favorite people of all time.
I remember watching this on TV as a kid.
This is just great to see love it. Thanks for posting this.
i have been waiting to watch this video for more than 20 years. i don't know where you got this from, but thanks a million for sharing!
Wanted to see this since I saw mention of it in an early '80's issue of Guitar World.

that's about how long ago I lost it!
I wished I'd had a vcr that worked.

Beck and Paul look like they're having a great time. I love Beck's fake attempt to de-tune Paul's guitar around 7:25. Great stuff.
I totally agree with you ...thanks for your comment
damn, this is awesome! They are truly great guitar players.
Amazing. legends... side by side.

Ha! Lester got the last word. Did you catch that last lick of the song? Whew! What a player.
Fantastic, tho I see no wad of duct tape.
jeff beck, cutting heads like usual.
The wad of duct tape was because his Line-In socket was busted. So he had to tape it all down or there would have been a risk of the sound failing
Back at the Chicken Shack
...from the one, the only, the great and the incredible Jimmy Smith 🎹
was Les playing a...... Dusk Tiger prototype? i hope not :/
6:20 --> Il Bosso Novo.
Check your copy of Blow by Blow?
he designed the Les Paul. but the SG came out under the name les paul. he had nothing to do with the SG.
not very sure you already know the answer lol
when your volume is high as Jeff Becks it seems his out doing but his is just noise compair to Les Pauls playing.
LOL @ 7:46
