    In World War II, we were using guns around 150 mm. Why have we changed that to around 50-60 mm?

    • @Crunchbite_Daimyo
      @Crunchbite_Daimyo 4 года назад +7

      During WW2 the main armament was the guns between about 100-400mm and a range of about 10-40km, but now the primary armament are guided missiles with a range of ~300km. There isn't much point to mounting large guns when you're going to be sinking before you get in close enough to use them. The purpose of the Bofors 57mm is for self defence against smaller ships and aircraft.

      @@Crunchbite_Daimyo The same 57mm 6 pound auto firing gun used in the WW2 Aircraft Mosquito " Tse Tse " fighter/bomber

      The Royal Canadian Navy had C-Class Destroyers during WWII; the main gun was a 120mm main gun which fired 15 rounds per minute (23 kg of high explosive) with a range 15.2 km.
      The current Halifax-class frigates (like the HMCS Toronto in this video) has a single 57mm main gun (firing 2.4 kg shells) but at a rate of 220 rounds per minute with a range of 17 km.
      That’s a lot more steel down-range per minute. Plus they would be much more accurate shots given the computer-aided firing system.

      @@andrelegris998 The sinkex against Huron showed that the 57 was absolutely useless against equal sized warships. Only the 76 from her sister ship did any real damage to her. They even fired an old sea sparrow against her for shits and giggles and that did nothing. They built them tough back there in the space age.

      @@Crunchbite_Daimyo Are you sure it's a Bofors 57mm? It looks more of a MKI 57 mm.

    I kinda want the navy to get more funding for an aircraft carrier but I want a lot of things for the canadian military in general and sadly most of what I want wont come true.
    Nice B O A T btw. Kinda thought the hangar would be bigger.

      Canada could afford it but it will take a lot and need public support, Canada could buy the Navantia LHD and put on say 10 F35's plus support aircraft. But it will also need say at least 4 escort ships so Canada would have to build 3-4 more Type 26 frigates as well as another AOR dedicated to the carrier fleet.
      Again Canada could afford it but the problem is the media, they would attack it every day for the costs of it even though it would be a huge advantage in navel warfare. But first thing is first the AOR's and Type 26's need to be built so it wont happen for 20-30 years.
