Vmx file change seems easy but high chances of corrupting it, would suggest to take a snapshot before editing vmx file.

Thanks for your input! You're right, modifying the VMX file carries risks, so taking precautions like creating a snapshot beforehand is wise.
It's great to see such helpful advice in the community.

Thank you for the wonderful video. It helps in learning. But, I have a doubt, what about if your VM has a RDM attached to it. What would happen, when we re-attach the RDM to the newly created VMs. And what if it is in Virtual or Physical compatibility mode? Also, in RHEL VMware Tools are managed RHEL. So, do we need to take any measures from that angle when we upgrade the VM HW Version?

Also, when you create a NEW VM, it also changes the SID... that might cause issues at the DB or application level.

      Hi,
Thank you for your positive feedback😊
Regarding your questions about VMs with RDMs attached, here's some information:
      1. **Re-attaching RDM to New VMs:**
If you're re-attaching an RDM to newly created VMs, you should ensure that the new VMs have the same compatibility mode as the original VM. If the RDM is in physical compatibility mode, the new VM should also be configured with physical compatibility mode. The process involves adding the existing RDM to the new VM's configuration.
      2. **Virtual vs. Physical Compatibility Mode:**
The compatibility mode determines how the RDM is presented to the VM. In virtual compatibility mode, the RDM is presented as a virtual disk file, while in physical compatibility mode, it's presented as a raw disk. Choose the mode based on your use case and the specific requirements of your application.
      3. **RHEL VMware Tools and VM HW Version Upgrade:**
When upgrading the VM hardware version, it shouldn't directly impact the functionality of RHEL VMware Tools. However, it's always a good practice to ensure that you have the latest version of VMware Tools installed to maintain compatibility and access the latest enhancements.
Remember that when making significant changes to VM configurations, it's a best practice to test the process in a controlled environment before applying it to production VMs.

      You're absolutely right.
When you create a new VM, it's important to consider that the new VM will have a different System Identifier (SID) compared to the original VM.
This change in SID can potentially lead to issues, especially at the database or application level, where the SID might be used for identification or authentication purposes.
It's crucial to take the following into account:
      1. **Database Systems:** Many database systems use the SID as a unique identifier for database instances. Changing the SID can lead to connectivity problems or unexpected behavior within the database.
In some cases, you might need to reconfigure database settings, update connection strings, or perform specific steps to ensure proper communication with the new VM.
      2. **Applications:** Some applications might rely on the VM's SID for licensing or authentication. A change in SID could lead to licensing issues or difficulties in accessing the application.
Before creating a new VM, it's wise to consult with the application's vendor or support to understand how the SID change might impact the application.
To mitigate these potential issues, consider the following actions:
      - **Testing and Preparation:** Before creating a new VM, thoroughly test the process in a non-production environment. This helps you identify any potential issues and develop mitigation strategies.
      - **Backup and Snapshots:** Take backups or snapshots of the original VM and its associated databases and applications before making any changes. This provides a safety net in case you need to revert to the previous state.
      - **Communication:** If possible, inform relevant teams or stakeholders about the planned VM creation and potential SID change. This helps them prepare for any necessary adjustments on their end.

    Hi Sir,
When we add existing hard disk to the newly created VM for downgrading hardware version, does the server IP remain same? as we are creating new vm but adding existing vmdk file? and does it impact any existing applications and data on it?

    • @gnancloudgarage
      @gnancloudgarage  Год назад +1

      Hi Sir,
      1. When we add an existing hard disk (VMDK file) to a newly created virtual machine (VM), the server IP does not automatically remain the same.
      2. The IP address is typically assigned by the network configuration within the guest operating system running on the VM.
      3. If we're creating a new VM and attaching an existing hard disk, it's likely that we'll need to configure the network settings on the new VM to match the previous VM's configuration, including the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings.
      4. This way, the new VM can retain the same IP address as the previous VM.
      5. However, please note that the IP address may also be assigned dynamically by a DHCP server in our network.
      6. In that case, the IP address will be assigned automatically, and we won't need to configure it manually.
      7. Regarding the impact on existing applications and data, attaching an existing hard disk to a new VM should not directly affect the data on the disk or the applications installed on it.
      8. The VM will recognize the disk as additional storage, and we can access the data on it just as we would on the previous VM.
      9. Additionally, it's always a good practice to have backups of your data before making any significant changes to your VM configuration to mitigate the risk of data loss or corruption.
