    When cleaning my closet I do it kind of backwards,instead of trying to look for stuff to get rid of,I take EVERYTHING out and start putting back my favorite pieces and when it starts looking pretty full I get rid of the rest, then I have my best pieces in my closet

    I think the problem is you’re buying lots of inexpensive clothes that are on trend. I buy fewer clothes but better quality and classic styles. I keep them for years and they always look chic. One cashmere sweater or silk blouse can get a lot more wear and elevate your wardrobe than all those inexpensive Walmart tops. Try doing a capsule of high quality items one season. You will find you don’t need to do a closet clean out at all because you love and wear every item.

      Similar here… Base palette of neutrals, limited number of accent colors that go with those. Nothing clashes, so there is maximum versatility. I have recently added some prints, though, all classic (mostly in button-down shirts): checks, stripes, dots, and small Liberty-print florals. It’s fun to have a pop of color or print under a sweater or jacket. I find I don’t tire of the timeless prints, only the trendy or garish ones. And I don’t buy *anything* that won’t hold up over many wearings and washings. No synthetics (except workout/sports items), *no fast fashion.* Better to have less. Took me a lot of years to learn, too! One *good* sweater is worth more and will last longer (if properly cared for) than 6 cheap ones!

  • @luvzdogz

    I like that you delineated by SEASON rather than time. Usually the guidance is like 6 months (or something close). That's always hard for me because I live in a southern state and summer is like 7 months! LOL so of course I haven't worn that sweater in 6 months! 🤪
    One trick I've been using for clothes I'm undecided about is the "one last wear" test. I say, ok, let me wear this shirt or skirt one more time and if I don't love how I feel in it or it's not comfortable anymore, that helps me make up my mind!

    If I may add, when you go to donate things make sure they are clean, pressed if they need it, and free of stains or damage. I used to work in a high-end resale shop. Rarely do they have washers or dryers, and even if they do it just adds to the burden of the people who work there. Most places won't resell things with stain or damage, so you're better off throwing it away yourself or turning it into rags rather than leaving it to the people in the store to do. Don't transfer your problem to someone else! 🙂

Consider not shopping for so many cheap trendy items at Walmart etc in the first place. If you only select 2 good quality classy animal-print or tie-dye items to keep indefinitely, there's no need to toss a bunch later.

  • @seaside2001

    Angela maybe you could consider sustainability in your clothing purchases. One likes to think cheap fast fashion is going to be used by someone else, but the reality is, it end up in the landfill as pollution. Purchasing clothing with sustainable fabrics in classic styles will last you for many years to come. It would be great to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. Food for thought.

  • @altitudeiseverything3163
    @altitudeiseverything3163 Год назад +36

    Good job making this video! However, I disagree on a few points. I’ve always enjoyed the time I put into curating a personal style and getting the most out of my wardrobe. This is what has worked for me over the decades:
    1. Build a core wardrobe of classic, versatile pieces that can be updated with accessories, or an occasional trendier item. My rule of thumb is to add *one* trendy, or unexpected, item to an otherwise classic outfit to keep things looking fresh and current.
    2. I spend the bulk of my investment on those core pieces, making sure the fit, fabric, and construction will hold up over many wearings and washings. Buying natural fabrics (rather than polyester or acrylic), avoiding blends (which tend to ‘pill’), and then *taking very good care of them* so they’ll last. A well made merino wool sweater (merino is tolerated even by those allergic to most wool) may cost more than an acrylic one, but with proper care will still look new after many years of wear.
    3. Fashion is cyclical. If I have a piece that has gone out of style, but it’s good quality, flattering on me, and I love it, then *I keep it.* I clean it, then store it in a bin out of the way. Years later it’ll come back into fashion and getting it back out feels like Christmas. I get to enjoy it all over again and get more of my money’s worth out of it. I don’t keep everything, just my favorites. I’m currently enjoying some of my clothing, shoes, and bags from the late ‘90s, early 2000s.
    4. I only buy a trend if it suits my body type, my personal style, and I really love it. And I won’t spend much on these more short-lived items if I do decide to pick up a couple. Even then, I’ll pass up any trend that I think won’t be last for more than a season or two.
    5. Any new piece that I buy needs to work in my existing wardrobe in at least 5 different outfits, so I don’t ‘hang outfits together.’ Instead I have a spreadsheet -revised 2X a year- that lists every pair of pants, every skirt or dress, and the top, jacket, accessories, shoe/boot combinations that work with each. When I’m in a rush, or planning an outfit for the next day, I refer to the spreadsheet for ideas. Taking a day at the start of each season to try out different combinations gives me an opportunity to edit and cull items that no longer serve me. It also discourages me from spending money on things I don’t need by showing me how many outfits I already have; it’s always more than I think.
    6. A few years ago I donated my collection of mismatched hangers and replaced them with matching sets. I couldn’t afford to buy all wooden hangers, and I don’t like the velvet-flocked type, so I bought wooden hangers for coats, jackets, and blazers, and less expensive clear plastic boutique-style hangers for the rest. Looking into my closet, seeing clothing neatly organized on matching hangers, shoes all neatly arranged rather than jumbled on top of each other gives them *value,* regardless of how much or little an item may have cost. I’m more likely to take good care of them and make them last, keeping them out of landfills (where most donated clothing ends up). Clothing shouldn’t be semi-disposable. The bulk of our purchases need to be carefully considered and chosen to last. Our planet is drowning in our wasteful overconsumption of cheap items made at the expense of those working in horrendous conditions for poverty level wages. Less, but better, truly *is* more.
    7. And animal prints? At this point, they’re a classic. And animal prints are actually one of the recurring trends shown in the fall/winter ‘22/‘23 runway shows, shown by Dior, among many others. No, I don’t buy Dior! 😉 But runway shows are a good way to get a sense of ‘which way the wind is blowing’ and can tell you which of your loved, but stored, pieces should be put back into rotation. Colors, cuts, prints… all filter down from runway to ready-to-wear, albeit in more wearable forms.

I try to not impulse buy and will spend more money on well made classic pieces that will be in style for a long time rather than "trendy" pieces that go in and out of style every season.

  • @MsPea
    @MsPea Год назад +2

    I also do this whenever the seasons change. I usually store my off-season clothes and that's a good time to go through things and get rid of whatever I didn't wear last year. I take them to Goodwill or another discount store. I feel better knowing someone else will buy and wear the things I don't want anymore. I need to do this with shoes, too. I have kept shoes I haven't worn for years, because I keep thinking I might wear them. I try not to do that anymore and just get rid of them. I actually feel pretty good after I go through and get rid of stuff. I love to get rid of clutter and unused clothes.

    I started putting outfits together a while back, some for cooler weather or a warmer day and then I can pick which one is more suitable for that particular day. It works out so good. As I’m getting the outfits together I can even try them on to see if I like the look. It is such a good way of rotating your clothes. I put them back in my closet once they are clean but put the hanger backwards to let me know I’ve already worn it. Works good for me. Love your ideas!

    Each year I flip all hanger hooks backwards on rod. When I wear something, hang up with hanger facing forward. End of season, easy to see what I'm actually wearing. Easier to let go of unworn pieces. Haven't found a system for clothes in drawers. 🙂

    Great tips. My master closet is HUGE and I have several tricks I use: 1) blouses/sweaters are hung inside out (no hanger bumps!) and in ROY G BIV order. 2) at the beginning of fall (or September) all my clothes are hung up backwards and when I've worn an item, it gets hung back up normally. All things still backwards are then up for consideration.

    • @roseobloy7978
      @roseobloy7978 Год назад

      I don’t bother to rehang backwards. On Jan 1 I start putting hangers of clothes worn in the reverse. As year progresses I can see at a glance what I’m not wearing. And at end of year it leaves the closet. Then start again putting hangers in the reverse of the previous year.
      I do the same with tops in the same color starting of left with white, greige, black. red, etc. ❤

    Great ideas. I have learned that it's not always a clutter problem with clothing, it's a BUYING problem. I try not to buy things unless it is good quality, less trendy, and you really love it, not just that it's a good price. Ask yourself, do you like it enough to come back to the store for it next week? Also, why keep it if it makes you feel bad for putting on a few pounds?

    You do you boo. And you are doing amazing sharing.
    Yes. Your questions are great. It doesn’t matter if it is from
    Walmart or Nordstrom’s. If it doesn’t fit or you don’t like it … no need to keep it.
    If it doesn’t fit. It really is a mental downer with clothes in closet that doesn’t fit.
    Great job!! When I finally did a purge my first time. It was such a relief.
    Now each season it’s easier and enjoyable.

    I have a tip that helps me. Once I wear something I put it back from the laundry with the hanger the opposite way. This way it's easy to see what's been worn and what hasn't been. Then when it's time to purge I see what I wore that season and what I didn't.

    Great video Angela, and perfect timing since I’ve been trying to go through my closet. Today I had the day off and my plan was to get my closet done. I even called the resale shop the other day to tell them I’d be in today, but I accomplished very little. I could relate to everything you talked about, even clothes with tickets still on them. The resale shop loves seeing me come in, tickets on everything. I started laughing when you said you pulled your hair back because you got hot. That’s what I did today. I kept trying all my clothes on trying to decide what to take to the resale shop and what to keep. I finally got sick of it all, and gave up. It’s so hard trying to decide. So today was another day wasted. Haha! I didn’t know you and your husband had Covid. That’s awful. I’m glad you’re both feeling better. Whatever you do, don’t donate the pretty top you’re wearing in this video. It’s very flattering on you, love the colors. Continue on your road to recovery, and I look forward to your fun videos.

    Hi Angela. Great tips and you did an awesome job. Glad to hear that you and hubby have recouperated from covid. Such an awful virus. I have been procastinating all spring and summer about cleaning out my closet. Last week my closet made that decision for me. When I came home and couldn't get into my closet because the racks fell down. We had to hire a carpenter to do a much sturdier job than before. But when putting my clothes back in I didn't want that same issue for a 4th time. So my decisions were based on: 1) John Kitchener says that my essence is bright and lively and I need to choose my colours first. Also I need to dress my face first.
    2) My Kibbe Type is a Soft Gamine. I don't like that type and was buying all the wrong styles.
    3) My DYT is Type 1 / 2. I don't like being a Type 1 and was buying all Type 2's.
    4) I am a True Spring and those colours are very difficult to buy so most of my colours were all wrong.
    5) I also became interested in Fashion Feng Shui and everything that didn't align with that category also ended up in the donation bags.
    I have reviewed all the clothes that were leaving so that I don't re-buy those types again.
    I really need to focus on colour and fabrics before anything else.
    I need a more mature classic wardrobe and stay away from trends.
    I know I should shop for more classic blue jeans however our stores are not allowing us to try them on so for now I need to keep all my skinnies.
    I really like the Parisian Chic Style but it feels so boring on me.
    I really appreciate all your tips and look forward to more videos.
