#LandscapePhotography #Hiking
The huge hikes are definitely also some of the best moments I've had with landscape photography!
What could we define as huge? 5days, 10 days? Kia Te Araroa in New Zealand is 3000km 120day hike thats huge in my opinion.
Mads... the madman with a camera and talent to boot!!!
I'm always torn between the 2 ideas of hiking. The huge American hike through that is 2000 miles and takes months but you constantly have contact with other people and there are villages every day or two. And the Scottish Highland hiking where you meet 5 people a day, stay in a bothy or in a tent and there is no civilisation in sight for days if you plan your route nicely.
@@KNURKonesur You got a point there. My girlfriend and I did the Rockwall hike in Canadian rockies, ealy winter 2017, which was a 5 day hike. Didnt see people for 4 days only a thick layer of snow.
Good luck on the English portion of your GED.
Three years ago I made a commitment to get into hiking. It has literally changed my life! I've lost 30 kg, gotten much better work ethics and enjoyed numerous adventures that I never thought I would. Today, I do at least a 7 km hike each day, even if I have to go up at 4 am to squeeze it in before I have to go to work. Starting to use hiking as exercise is the best decision I've ever made.
You've inspired me. last night I went to bed early and got up early this morning so I could go on a hike and I think I captured one of the best images in my portfolio; fog, light, the whole nine yards. So thank you my friend.
@@dominicpersichetti6340 Great work, glad to hear that!
You know... it's weird, the more i come to this channel, the more i relate to what you say at 11:06 pointing to your camera: 'this is just an excuse to be here...' it's like... photography is falling into a secondary thing and not the main reason of watching your videos..? like... i come here more for the experience of nature and relaxation (nice music btw) rather than to learn about photography. I know photography is the main thing, it's what the channel is about, but when i see a new video from you on my timeline is more like... 'great! let's (kind of) enjoy nature from my chair...' It's not a criticism at all anyway, just the way i started to feel your uploads... and they are beautiful!
Occasionally people will ask me why I do landscape photography. And I'll say something like "it gives me something to do while I'm looking at nature". I love photography. I've been at it for over 40 years now. But, the most important thing is just being out experiencing nature.
But this also inspires me to go out and experience it in person ❤️
Haha, just posted a comment referring to that line as well. That really is what it’s all about.
The joy of Photography hiking is to not know what you would see in next minutes. Landscape’s always changing by wether and altitude. For me most of hiking involved numerous ascents and descents on the course at average altitude of 3,000m but worth every step. And rewarded with great satisfaction when completing the route. Thank you for sharing this beautiful video.
Your profession is the very definition of not being able to work from home. Get out there and share new adventures. Loved this video.
Thanks for this video Tom. When it's the middle of winter and you watch these great locations at dawn it just makes you smile. Reminds me of some of the hikes I have done and the great shots I have come away with on mornings I may have otherwise stayed in bed to sleep. Some of the best shots come from mornings like that. As you and others have said before; you've got to be in it to win it. Cheers!
Something I like about this channel's videography is it's always records third person view with a tripod and he hikes alone, which is very different from most of the mainstreamed first person view these days, it shows how much work he has been doing to create a good video content, I couldn't have done it while hiking since it's very tiring already from the hike.
Probably one of my favorite videos you have done. I am planning to go for a hike this weekend.
This is one of the best photography videos I’ve ever seen! Honestly could watch hours of this.
One of my goals for 2021 is to do exactly what this video is about-go out an explore.
My favorite part of this video is when you’re on the beach and point out that the camera is just an excuse to be there. That’s EXACTLY how I feel about photography. It’s the perfect reason to do anything.
Thank you for making this.
I love hiking, with or without a camera. Great video Tom 👍 Very peaceful and beautiful
Definitely love hiking! Both for landscape photography and for the hiking itself! Getting out for a hike is the best thing I've found for my mental health! :)
Loved the cuts from 08:00 to 08:30 - very smoothly done!
Thomas idk if you will read this, but the content you put out in the last year or so is so inspiring. I love photography and I don’t really know what to do with it and everytime I watch one of your recent videos I feel so inspired to make a channel. So thank you for that and thank you for being authentic.
Great message and why I started watching you in the first place. Thank you for the gift of the hiking video playlist!
Great video, so inspiring to go hiking!!! love the pictures at 7.30 where the cloud embraces the mountain and at 11.30 the morning sunrise shot when you went camping!
I love hiking in the mountains - I find it incomparable to any other experience and it makes me feel grounded every time I go out. I started to get into photography and picked up a sweet 4/3 camera and lens.. trying to learn as much as I can. I haven't found many youtube channels like yours so thanks for the content!
Great video Tomas, your love of being in the outdoors and your honest portrayal of the trials and tribulaitons of practicing photography make this the top channel on RUclips for me.
I just got back from 5 days in Torres Del Paine NP (I live in Chile). First time out hiking in almost a year. Was a family trip so no tripod and no time to stop on the trails to properly compose shots. Not much photography was done but it felt so great to be out in nature again!
It is a very inspirational video absolutely agree? Hiking is a beautiful adventure. Thanks Thomas?
This actually is one of my goals for 2021, hiking, and getting back into photography.
So many reminders of why I kept watching your channel ... many moments and sights to savour. :-)
We need a T-shirt that says: I’m a photographer. I nap at midday.
Thanks Thomas.
I got a bit of "cabin fever" myself with the current situation and last weekend I snapped and called a friend to go out and hike. Pack the camera with it, of course.
But the main goal was to go on a hike. Be outside, get some exercise in.
Loved it. Missed it for a long time and I realized that my mood is 10 times better today. I think this is one of the real "bad things" from the current situation - Not being able to go out all day and especially that everybody get's real mental and clogs up every little spot they can find "because they need to be outside". My area is overrun with people that want to be outside and "in the local mountains". It makes it impossible for me to go to any spot because many places are locked from the streets and so it's not easy to reach another location.
Thanks for this and I will check out the playlist. Even if I know some of it already. Keep it up and stay safe.
Man, you do enjoy what you're doing. I'm following your work last few months and, even I'm not a big fan of landscapes unless there's some minimalism, the way you share your time there, with others, is what captured my attention. I like very much the way you present your work and your time, and the hope projected in the footage. All my respects, kudos!
This image made me so happy, just the tonic. I’ve instantly started planning hikes. Nice one Tom!
Hey, nice to see you here bud :) (fuji_miguli)
Absolutely and totally Loved this! 😍
Couldn't agree more. 30 years ago I made the decision to base my professional life in southern Germany, partly due to the proximity to the Alps. I've come to photography from the mountain climber perspective rather than the other way around and I'm only beginning to realise how much advantage this gives me as a photographer.
Great video. Sometimes the hardest thing to do getting out of bed! Thanks for sharing.
At 2:00 such an epic shot, and without hiking, you won’t see it.
Stunning video. I've been watching your videos for about 5 years now and you always inspire me to get out and take a hike!
Do it now, when you're young. Reach 70 with a bad back. Sadly limited hiking.
Thanks for the video.
I'm sorry to hear that. How about 4x4 driving on green lanes? That could be the ticket.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Thank you Thomas for your reply. I'm ok on slight hills, I tend to do Seascape photography now. Mostly in Norfolk. When allowed to travel. Love the beaches there. My favourite walk is Burnham Overy harbour. Along coast path to the beach. Then walk to Wells nxt to see. Making my way to the harbour there.
Then spoil myself with fish and chips from Frenchies. Lovely part of the world. Stay safe now 🙏
Such a lovely uplifting vlog, really wonderful
My wife and I spent a clear day riding trains to hike/photograph Schynige Platte in Switzerland. Fog enveloped the entire region overnight and we spent the day hiking to the sound of invisible cowbells. No landscape that day. I still got to spend the day with a lovely woman on the roof of the alps. We enjoy our misadventures as much as we enjoy photography. God made a beautiful world for us to capture, even if it's just our own memories.
11:45 being in those conditions takes so much effort, but the thrill of being there balances it out.
Got to say Tom, between watching yourself, Gavin, Murray and Gary Gough I've been inspired to start hiking and have fallen in love with it. I'll be forever indebted to you guys for this.......and the photography tips and entertainment of course! 😂
You know you've been here a while when you can remember Thomas with the cartilage piercing
and getting a few "gorgeous" as well, we're in for a treat today
@@rthurJ It's a stage you go through.
@@Jeff-jg7jh He has a tat or two also.
When you can remember the non-one-direction haircut.
And the walking sticks
Blimey I expected to see a van full of police at the top there ready to rummage in your rucksack looking for evidence of a picnic. But .... no car park. Stunning scenery and epic photos.
Wonderful, inspirational.... thank you!
Your images were incredible! This one got me very emotional. I miss those long backpacking adventures. Thanks for this reminder and I wish you continued success.
OMG, Is this a RUclips video or something shot for imax, unbelievable production quality.
As I told my doctor the other day, I'm getting exercise, and it's all because of the magnet of doing outdoor photography to remote locations.
So much goodness comes from a photography hike.
A very relaxing watch
Always inspiring! Thanks Tom 👍
I have the bell clicked. I never get notified of your videos. I've missed so many. I hate YT.
I’ve been following you Thomas now for a few years and this was my favorite of your videos. Thank you for all your creative endeavors to put these out. As a local to a potion of the pacific crest trail it’s fun to hear the call out! I have young kids and can’t get out for these adventures, so I live vicariously through you and Nigel D. Thank you!
Love your content so much sir!
I have broken so many bones, including my back. Your content inspires me to go past my back yard!
Thank You Sir For Everything You Share!
Love From Iowa!!
Good stuff Thomas! Hiking is just like meditation, I try to make it as obvious as possible in my hiking videos as well!
Great topic. This is a good niche. Maybe it's because of my past searches, but you are featuring very prominently on the searches for 'hiking photographers'. Would be interesting to see what comes up for others.
This was nice. I do enjoy hiking, but need to ease into it after all the shutdowns. Thanks.
Love your work..you inspired me to pick up my camera gears after I set it away for manys yrs.
Thisssss was lovelyyyyyy Thomas
I’m in total agreement! The combination of hiking and photography not only improves one’s skills, but it’s also therapy for the mind and body! One of your best video, Thomas! Keep them coming.
That's nice to hear. Thanks 👍
Your so lucky, those all look like amazing hikes! Also, not cool sharing this content when we’re stuck in lockdown again and can’t hike! 😭
Great video thanks Thomas
great vid Tom . 5k hard lockdown here in Dublin , its tough .
the camera is just an excuse , true that .
stay safe
Thanks for the inspiration.
Hiking and photography go hand in hand, in my opinion. Another great video, Thomas. I've been following you since the beginning, thank you for the continued inspiration!
Inspiring video, thanks!
Photography has always been my excuse for going hiking. Good times.
You've inspired me to set my goal for the year👌
great vid Tom I feel inspired.
I'm happiest when I'm out hiking/exploring with my camera, great for exercise but also great for mental well being, to escape out into the landscape and explore, away from the daily grind and just be.
Great video and inspiration! I just got my new boots and am definitely going to be planning some hikes. We got a new president this afternoon and I am ready to make 2021 a great year for photography. Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing it with us!
Wonderful video & message !
Amen Tom :)
That adventure up in Applecross was fantastic - still remember the challenger breakfast in Lochinver with the fire fighters outside enjoying their after battling the wild fires for days! Great memories!
Catch up soon sir

Ah man, those were the days. If nothing else, this recent disaster will fuel bigger and better adventures. I feel a Murray/Heaton van and hiking tour of Scotland coming!
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto bring it on !!👍
A good walk is all part of the photography experience and vice versa. I am missing my rambles around Dartmoor at the moment. I miss being cold, wet and getting battered by the wind. :-)
Always inspiring dude!
Working for your shot by going on a hike is easily the most rewarding way to shoot
thanks for this film.
I love this compilation of hiking trips! I've wanted to hike more for a long time and 2020 was definitely the perfect year to do so. 2021 doesn't look too different... Anyway, if you could share more tips about planning like reading maps, weather forecasts and stuff along those lines, it would be very helpful. Also, talking about security and safety, specially as a woman, I think is important to talk about... sometimes those are the biggest deterrents to start hiking more, at least to me.
Like Simon Baxter, I've had to deal with chronic pain. I'm trying to get out and hike more. Your book (which came a couple of weeks ago) has been inspiring, for, despite being a LIFELONG photographer, I've not traveled much. Today, January 20th, is a good day here in the U.S. It is -45. ;-) (SOME will get the joke.)
Cheers, Thomas.
And after you get back from your hike come online and buy some of my merchandise. Tommy boy you’re always good for a laugh.
Your hiking/camping adventures are what brought me to your channel, Tom, and continue to be my favorite videos of yours. Gonna revisit some of my favorites on that playlist, thanks!
Also, A+ for a Fallout Boy reference 😂
Thank you for encouraging me to get out there!
I go now a lot to Skitours with my camera....it is awesome....i have a goal to go at least 2 times a week.
In my element when outdoors
Thank you! Great video! Wish you more great hikes!
I've been watching Paul Messner all day thinking, god I need to stop watching these wild camping videos, its making me depressed that i cant go anywhere, then Tom goes and drops this on me, why do you do this too me! 🤣
Great chill photography video as always 😁
Wow amazing video Thomas, really enjoyed this, such a great sence of scale space, and being in your zone, the hills and lighting,
that is some challenge, but a massive thanks for the inspiring views.
Tom: How goes the van build? I'd like to see updates on that.
Yes, was wondering the same
You guys are in for a treat! Because of lockdown, my work has dried up a little so I've been making a full Van Build series. Coming soon 👊👊
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Sorry to hear about the income loss, but very excited to see how the home on wheels is coming. I hope 2021 gets better for you financially.
Ive packed my dslr on on a few runs. Once up and over St Sundays crag in the Lakes which was fantastic when the bluebells were out.
As a photographer that hikes, I agree.
Lovin the Shaggy from Skooby do look Tom
All my photography shoots are based around a hike or an adventure,I never just drive get out of car take photo then on to next tourist attraction or view
Me too. But I have to admit, I've gotten some pretty good photos by stopping along the road while on my way to or from a trailhead or campground. Although, sometimes it's a little dangerous, and I try to exercise restraint or I'd never reach my intended destination.
welcome to Kenya Heaton
The birch trees seem like dancers.
It would be really awesome if you put locations in the corner of the screen when cycling videos!
hiking is good. video is good. hair is gooood
Thanks, great Vid :)
Nice work Mr. Heaton!
Boards of Canada, Bibio, Thomas Heaton...
As a swede, I was sure you were skiing in the thumbnail. However, turns out you walk like a cross country skier in the snow!
Because he doesn't know enough to put away the poles where they are not useful. Should not have two to begin with ....
Lol. I probably amped up my walk for the camera.
I can't wait for the day where we can all get back to trekking across the countryside and travelling to both new and familiar places once more 📷👍
Legally you can. Just don't stay over night.
Formerly Bernard You can go out but only locally not travelling across the country..
@@smiffy5467 Says who? Not the law for sure. Within England all perfectly lawful.
There is nothing like waking up somewhere in the mountains, far from everything. :)
So true!
Man i love your videos!
Don't forget how the cold, windy, sleepless nights act as a natural trip, allowing you to really tap into that creative process.
Lol. True, sometimes 😂
Can't wait to go out hiking again. But in the meantime, fortunately we still have your video's. Thank you Thomas!
Ayy Bottle Episode!
For me in 2021 my variant of this is to do unicycle touring photography, we'll see how that goes, as it might just be the worst idea ever.
So beautiful!
