I can’t use anything except the prescription at .05 and I am now just started to tolerate it every night. I can testify that trying anything else will leave me not able to tolerate anything else without burning. So yes burning you face off is not fun or productive. I cannot tolerate it near my mouth because I have a deep wrinkle on one side and it gets red and hurts. Finally started listening to my skin! Thank you Dr. Idriss! Hard headed but finally got the message. Be patient and I am finally seeing some results.
No one ever answers whether the cycling refers to nighttime routine only, or mornings, too. I use actives during the day as well. That said, I've inadvertently cycled for years. Now it just has a name. As you said, you need to listen to your skin. These blanket trends rarely end well.
I’ve built up to “intensity” over the last year. I’m pretty aggressive, and I’ve almost Never had any inflammation or irritation. I can do almost anything to my skin. However there’s a couple things that will make the area around the eyes burn a bit, I gently wash off with a warm cloth & sometimes follow up with Aveeno calm & restore 3xoat serum. But I’ve only had to do that a few times. I know what not to put near my eyes, including some things designed for eye area. So what I’m trying to learn now is finding the middle ground where I am getting maximum efficacy, using the least amount of products. I’ve been alternating every other night (or day, depending on when I’m using my glycolic acid overnite cream). I alternate tret .05% & .10%, every other day. Using vit b & c right after the tret. Cerve glycolic overnite renewing says use every nite. So the last 2 wks I’ve used every nite & done my actives in late morning/early afternoon. (My glyc around (10-11p). There’s not enuf time in the day for the other things i want to put on my face becuz of piling. I have a several serums I like to use, so I have to find a place to get them on. Plus some creams (q-10) & face oil (hers). Some things I have are combo of ingredients so I try to be aware of if I’m already getting something somewhere else. I use a lot of hydrating ingredients so I don’t always find a place for moisturizer. Sometimes I even wash my face (warm water only) a few hours after the actives so I can get some serums on. My sunscreen is LRP Athelios anti-ox/vitC serum and it’s very moisturizing. I’m just hear to learn how I can better cycle my products to have max effect without over using. I even do the spritz thing for fun sometimes lol (lrp & vichy aerosol spray & Pixi I have numerous face mists) Sleep on satin pillow. Take collagen peptides. Run humidifier. Take vit & supp (collagen prod assist plus immune/general vits). I have numerous sunscreens, different purposes diff times. lol I used to baste in winter but have no need rn. (Triple paste or Vaseline) Try to take care of my lips and body skin. Amlactin lotion, gold bond retinol cream, Oil of Olay retinol body wash, sometimes LRP triple moisture cream. I use cleanser 1x/day: vanicream or aveeno calm & restore or Cerave hydrating cleanse or LRP hydrating gentle cleanser. I love having choices. I have a couple other glycolic acid products but I seem to like the Cerave 5% nite skin renew tx(also has licorice root & kojic acid) Believe me I’ve spent 1,000 hrs plus in the last year learning from you Dr, and about 6-10 others Dr’s. I’d like to go into skincare specialist.
I've heard you mention the no retinols on the chin thing in many videos and I entirely disagree! I worked through healing adult acne for years and this is exactly the part of my face that broke out-literally nowhere else. The chin is such a common location for adult hormonal acne. It's my chin that needs it maybe the most! I'm currently using the LRP adapalene most nights. My acne is totally under control now. I also have dry skin, so when coupled with thick & occlusive moisturizers overnight, retinoids on the chin has completedly changed my complexion for the better.
I have been very happy with the results of The Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid 5% and TO Vit C in powder form (mixed with TO Resvertrol Serum). CONSISTENCY is key. Results: Increased luminosity and sunspots/hyperpigmentation down to a barely-there shadow.
we put our skin through so much every single day. skin cycling is nice but not for everyone. im on tret 3x a week so i tend to listen to my skin more often. i only incorporate an exfoliate if i feel like i need it but there is no guaranteed. each night might be different depending on what my skin needs. do what’s best for your skin.
Dr shireen your videos are my fav, you made my skin glow and shine in every meeting and conference and presentation, and be the topic of discussion❤️thank you so much for such informative videos. May your brand shine like my face and be the top❤️
Thank you for saying that you don’t apply retinols around your mouth and chin. I use tretinoin and always always get flaky irritation around that area… my whole rest of face is totally fine with daily application. I may just skip it! Since using tretinoin, I’ve been avoiding exfoliants altogether through fear of damaging my skin. If I use a glycolic acid exfoliant at night, do I skip the tret that evening?? Thanks for all your wisdom! ❤
The 4 day cycle is for beginners, but Dr. Bowe has more videos explaining how to slowly advance your cycling routine and build up to retinol 6 days a week if that is your goal.
Yes, there are many versions of skin cycling from Dr Whitney Bowe including the one where you are doing retinoids on night 2&3, with night 1 exfoliant and night 4 recovery. But many derms either not aware or ignore those more advanced skin cycling versions and criticizing the beginner skin cycling concept coined by Dr. Bowe.
@@gtan307 Not everyone has to love everything. Derms all have their own way of thinking and techniques and luckily you are free to follow the advice that suits you.
@@gtan307have you Watch the full video ? Using two night in a roll still can be very useless if the point of using retinols to get rid of wrinkles is to use it every day or every other day! 🤷🏼♀️ I think her cycle is good for tiktokers in their 20/30s doing skincare but if you past 40/45 using retinol once a week or two night in a roll will do nothing for you 😊
@@kbitten Using two nights in a row still give you a total of 4x a week (on night 2 & 3) of retinoid which is a decent number of frequency. I watched the whole video and yes I agree with skincare should be seen as a weekly thing not daily.
@@Ravenz4770 Dr Bowe did say the classic skin cycling only serves as a framework that can be modified based on your specific needs and not everyone has to follow. She even came up with more advanced versions where you’d use retinoid 4-5x a week. So if you need to create your own schedule where you use retinoid more often. But derms that don’t follow her only criticize about the one version of skin cycling.
I watched a skin cycling video and felt like I would be going backwards if I did it that way. I also felt that was what I had been doing when i started using a retinol 2 years ago. I built up to 5 nights a week with the Inkey List Retinol and now I am 4 nights a week with the Geek and Gorgeous A Game 10 a retinal and will soon try 5 nights. The plan is to eventually start Tret next year and see what happens. I make a decision on the off nights if I need to use a chemical exfoliator and usually it is just a BHA serum on my nose where I seem to get more blackheads. About twice a month I use an AHA or PHA exfoliator if needed. Will skin cycling work? Yes...for beginners because I feel like it worked for me and I am mad I didn't come up with the name and copywrite it!!!!
What is the difference between inflamed and purging? You said purging has to go away between 3-4 weeks to be purge and not break out, how do I know I’m not “inflamed” instead and kept using it thinking it’s purging…. Help :(
Dear Dr Idriss, thank you for this channel!! I’m currently using the Shani Darden retinol 5x per week. What do you think could be the next one to up my retinol game? Thank you!
Doctor, thank you so much for educating us. Dermatologist fee is expensive and i cant afford it. Government hospital only accept severe cases. So again, thank you, because of your advice and explanation, i understand how to take care of my skin and its getting better now
I always follow the 2 nights on one night off routine with tretinoin and replace it with a gentle lactic acid on my off night or have a recovery night judging on my skin. the 2 nights on 1 night off method works best for me because I am still giving my skin that break from my tretinoin but I also get the results from that 2 nights in a row using tret. I tried the every-other-day method and found this to be more effective for me.
I have a dry erase weekly calendar on my bathroom wall to help me with “skin cycling.” Although I’ve been doing this well before the term and trend came out, and it’s kind of more complicated than the trend haha.
Hi Shereene! Thank you so much for your fun and informative videos, I watch them all and think that you are just wonderful! A question; I live in Australia and as I checked out the Skin Rocks product you recommended, I saw that they don't ship that particular product here. Would the one from The Ordinary that you mentioned be ok, or are you aware of any other brands that carry the same active ingredient? And, of course, are good? All my best wishes
Sensitive soul here! For exfoliating acids, is it better to use a lower strength acid with a lower molecular weight, e.g. 5% glycolic, or a higher strength pha that's less likely to irritate?
I love being one of your little nerds. 💜 You’ve talked about sebaceous filaments before, but could you give us a deep dive on them? Do those buggers stay in our pores for decades if we don’t exfoliate?
Love your videos! What are your thoughts on the Dr Dennis Gross exfoliating pads? I can’t see the percentages of the acids listed anywhere … thank you!
Dr Idress, I love you and your advice, but not ALL of uscan afford $100+ for a Tretinoid product! I am a disabled RN living on SSDI less than $2000/ mo, most if which goes ti mortgage/utilities. I was married ti an MD for 10 yrs, so I remember how nice it was not to have to look at price tags! Ive been using Curology .1% for several yrs ($39/mo and includes Azailic Acid and another ingredient I cant quite remember!). It may not be as 'cosmeticly elegant' but it works! I started w Differing Gel (cheap & OTC). Im not saying you shouldn't talk about Skinceutucals and Drunk Elephent, but please keep in mind that we are in a Inflationary period, moving into a Recession and the average wage where I live (New Mexico) is $12 to $13/HR. Thx! By the way, I have used the Ordinary Granacive, and it worked great as an introductory Retinol !
It takes a lot of trial and error to find a routine that works for your own skin, I've found that using G&G A game one night followed by Tropicals faded the next night, followed by COSRX aha/bha toner the next night works for me and I don't need a night off from using actives. Glycolic acid doesn't work for me at all as it leaves me needing a fortnight off using actives to repair my skin barrier, learned that the hard way!
When I started my skincare journey I didn't know much about exfoliating acids, your videos and warnings about over-exfoliation really helped me. At some point I realized both my moisturizer and vit c have salicylic acid in it. Should I continue using them in the morning (with spf) and is this even considered exfoliation since acid is at low percentage and mixed with other ingredients? Thanks a lot for all the amazing advice so far ❤
thanks a lot for your videos ! I would like to ask your opinion about Active Serum - iS Clinical, I have been using it for like 6 Weeks already, but i dont see a big progress and is an expensive product.. so i do not know if should i give it more time. I also use AHA from Paulas Choice 3x week.
Super informative video, thank you! I am going through a tough time with my skin. Always suffered with acne, it's been way better in the past years since I have been using Differin and Epiduo. However my skin is super sensitive, even if I take recovery nights and apply those over moisturisers. Recently they don't seem to help anymore and I'm getting loads of spots and pie again. I didn't know it'd make sense to use a prescription as well as a orc retinoid. I am tempting to drop everything and focus on recovering my skin barrier, then I'll try something milder maybe. The brand I've been looking at is Geek and gorgeous, they have very affordable retinal serums with amazing reviews
I appreciate all your hard work & input! I am hooked on your PillowTalkDerm Line as well!! However, could you PLEASE offer suggestions on products which are not so expensive. Some of us cannot afford the high end product lines & I am sure there are other lines available at a lower cost point but am uncertain who & where to look. Your feedback is most appreciated!!
Dear Sheerene, I must say that if I was wasn't enough of a nerd before subscribing, now I am even more and diligently check all components list on the products I use. I live in London. My question on cycling: I alternate routines not much because I need to, but more because I love several products but at the same time want to keep it simple. So at night after cleansing I alternate between a Pixi glycolic toner + Estee Lauder Night Repair serum and camomile baeed toner + Omorovizca retinal serum (not sure about retinol %) . Then I apply the same Omorovizca night cream every night. Does it mean I may not get any benefit because each serum is used 3-4 days a week? I have started doing this because I believe less is more, but what would your advice be when you love too many products? And would love to hear what you think of Omorovizca ... Thank you for reading and for your posts, I appreciate how hard it is to find time for a Saturday AM post and how committed you are
It' s been a 3 years progressive treti-journey (from retinYL>retinOL>retinAL) with extreme caution, _low & slow_ , _better safe than sorry_ until my perfect percentage, brand, application method and frequency has been dictated by MY SKIN. I suffered enough during 16 loooong years of acne and unsuccessful derms. I know how my skin is gonna react way better than I know how I' m gonna react myself in certain circumstances 😅🤣. Since I healed from that hell and removed 100% of the scars, thanks, but nothing is gonna disrupt my well deserved and achieved perfect balance where all my needs are covered and, in spite of being 48, I look like a 35 yo hybrid human-dolphin🧝🏻♀️🐬 Un gros bisou, ma cherie😚. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
I've built up to Tretinoin 0.5% every night of the week, but I sandwich it between moisturizers. Would it be better to back off on frequency if can apply it without sandwiching it? And use a mild OTC retinoid the other nights?
My skin would freak out if I do skin cycling. I have very thick, oily skin that is not sensitive. I need my BPO wash in the morning and my tretinoin and prescription strength azelaic acid in the evening daily in order to have completely clear skin.
question, would it be okay to use a salycilic acid cleanser on night 1, differin on night 2, and benzoyl peroxide + clindamycin on morning 3, and have a 3 day cycle? i also thought about doing the salycilic acid and differin on the same night and incorporating one day of rest but i thought it might be better to spread it out. i have acne and by using all of those steps every day i blasted my skin barrier and now my face is peeling off and the color of a tomato and it stings 😅 i’m thinking of skin cycling to get my skin used to the ingredients again once i finish my skincare diet
So if you can tolerate retinol 4x a week, do you use your 3 products first then the retinol? When and how do you incorporate your mask? Please show how you do it
Hi Shereene! If ever you do soon a video about question or a thing like that but I if you could explain why some products peels? Like when you apply them on your skin... it created little build up. Why?
Could you please do a video on what to wear while working out (aka sweating)? I can’t go naked (on my face) because my skin is too dry. Is there a way to treat my skin while working out since I’m not wearing make up at the time? Or maybe a lightweight moisturizer that won’t burn when it sweats into my eyes? Thank you! ❤
I've been in retinoic acid for 6 months. But now, my derma has prescripted a cream that has: 0.025% retinoic acid 8% salicylic acid 1% clindamycin (some antibiotic) He say "trust me", and I've seen amaizin results in their patients with the same formula, and the have hormonal acne (as me). But, I'm just scared. An I have rosacea, dry skin. Like... Has any derma told you to do the same? is he crazy? should I avoid this? Thanks and sorry for my bad english
Can you talk about minimizing pores? Any products you recommend once my pillow talk skincare is finished, does that mean the pigmentation will come back again? I know about the be consistent rule but I can't afford ur skin care for life? One of the higher end products I purchased (and well worth it - not complaining) I just wouldn't be able to afford to buy this consistently Bc I have certain serums that I like to use and if I have this ALSO it'll be a complicated skincare routine

- night 1: cetaphil gentle cleanser, copper peptides, other multi-peptide serums, tretinoin + my moisturiser
- night 2: cetaphil gentle cleanser, AHA serum, glycolic cream + my moisturiser
Please make a video with a weekly routine and products OTC to use for mature and prone to acne skin. Thank you for your help.

What do you think about alternatives to retinol? Is it as effective than pure retinol? Like bakuhiol, resverstrol, & Rambutan
This makes so much sense! Thank you for sharing, Dr Idriss 🙏
Love you for educating us
I’ve built up to “intensity” over the last year.
I even do the spritz thing for fun sometimes lol (lrp & vichy aerosol spray & Pixi I have numerous face mists)
Sleep on satin pillow. Take collagen peptides. Run humidifier. Take vit & supp (collagen prod assist plus immune/general vits). I have numerous sunscreens, different purposes diff times. lol
I used to baste in winter but have no need rn. (Triple paste or Vaseline)
Try to take care of my lips and body skin. Amlactin lotion, gold bond retinol cream, Oil of Olay retinol body wash, sometimes LRP triple moisture cream.
I use cleanser 1x/day: vanicream or aveeno calm & restore or Cerave hydrating cleanse or LRP hydrating gentle cleanser.
I love having choices.
I have a couple other glycolic acid products but I seem to like the Cerave 5% nite skin renew tx(also has licorice root & kojic acid)
Believe me I’ve spent 1,000 hrs plus in the last year learning from you Dr, and about 6-10 others Dr’s.
I’d like to go into skincare specialist.
I'm always looking forward to next saturday and your next Video 🤗👍🔝
Love your videos…good info. I watch as religiously! Thank you.
Love this review! My skin after the Retinoid 2 is glowing, can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it
I have been very happy with the results of The Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid 5% and TO Vit C in powder form (mixed with TO Resvertrol Serum). CONSISTENCY is key. Results: Increased luminosity and sunspots/hyperpigmentation down to a barely-there shadow.
i love it, i want to have your products but i cant afford it. You always give great concise information
we put our skin through so much every single day. skin cycling is nice but not for everyone. im on tret 3x a week so i tend to listen to my skin more often. i only incorporate an exfoliate if i feel like i need it but there is no guaranteed. each night might be different depending on what my skin needs. do what’s best for your skin.
Can you please make a video about home device low light laser therapy for hair loss? Is this a valid treatment option or is it B.S.?
I have been skin cycling my whole life because I accidentally forget to apply something when I am in a hurry
Dr shireen your videos are my fav, you made my skin glow and shine in every meeting and conference and presentation, and be the topic of discussion❤️thank you so much for such informative videos. May your brand shine like my face and be the top❤️
Very very true! That’s why you are my fave because it makes sense. Love you!❤️
Dr Sheerene, you made this video a little too late. I fell for it and spent my money already.😭 Thank you for the knowledge and i’ll listen to my skin.
Firstly I love you and secondly can we talk about your cute outfit 👀 where’s the neon shirt from? It’s amazing!!
What is your opinion on the beauty pie retinols.
What a great video doc! If I use tretinoin at night, can I use the Paula’s choice 2% exfoliant that night as well? Thank you for your input.
Hello
I’m from Philippines.
Can you please also discuss about alpha arbutin.
Thank you
Hi Shereene!
Your skin is 💕💕💕 vala some day I am going to have skin like that... Skin of colour
I'm using and loving YOUR skincare. I'd love to see a PillowTalk tinted Mineral Sunscreen added to your line.
Unlikely to happen anytime soon because FDA is a bee-eye-tea-see-edge.

@@miami5306 That “prize” person? It’s not Dr. Idriss. She’s mentioned that spammer before.

We need your advice for a clear bottom (foliculitis) !
how many times should I use a bp wash for controlling acne prone skin? thank you.
Sensitive soul here! For exfoliating acids, is it better to use a lower strength acid with a lower molecular weight, e.g. 5% glycolic, or a higher strength pha that's less likely to irritate?
Thank you and have a nice weekend

I love being one of your little nerds. 💜 You’ve talked about sebaceous filaments before, but could you give us a deep dive on them? Do those buggers stay in our pores for decades if we don’t exfoliate?
Merci pour vos conseils et bon voyage!
Dr Sheerene, it would be great if you could make a video dedicated to preventing / treating skin inflamatio. 🥺🙏🏻
Love your videos! What are your thoughts on the Dr Dennis Gross exfoliating pads? I can’t see the percentages of the acids listed anywhere … thank you!
Dr Idress, I love you and your advice, but not ALL of uscan afford $100+
for a Tretinoid product!
Pov...cute. Nice way to start a Saturday! Thanks for everything!! 🫂
@DrShereeneIdriss_Official winner! Really? 🙂
No cycling here but, if I peel or burn, I cut out my tret and bha and aha for 1-2 days and put LRP cicaplast on instead and voila….healed
Hi Doc! It great to see your videos! Would you able to do a video on daily skin care post 30 and 35 please ?
It takes a lot of trial and error to find a routine that works for your own skin, I've found that using G&G A game one night followed by Tropicals faded the next night, followed by COSRX aha/bha toner the next night works for me and I don't need a night off from using actives. Glycolic acid doesn't work for me at all as it leaves me needing a fortnight off using actives to repair my skin barrier, learned that the hard way!
What’s your take on Maelove Retinal? Would love to hear your opinion about it❤❤
When I started my skincare journey I didn't know much about exfoliating acids, your videos and warnings about over-exfoliation really helped me. At some point I realized both my moisturizer and vit c have salicylic acid in it. Should I continue using them in the morning (with spf) and is this even considered exfoliation since acid is at low percentage and mixed with other ingredients? Thanks a lot for all the amazing advice so far ❤
From what I’ve read, vit c works well with spf and sa works deeper down in your skin so it’s fine to use during the day and spf is a must.
thanks a lot for your videos !
How did you remove your post acne scars and Hyperpigmentations ??
Dr. Idriss-please link your clothes :) You have so many amazing sweaters. And it’s “sweata weather”!
So if you can tolerate retinol 4x a week, do you use your 3 products first then the retinol? When and how do you incorporate your mask? Please show how you do it
It's kind of nothing new but sold to beginners . AHA then next night a retinoid and then skip ? I use Tretinoin every night
Me too
i would have rubbed the retinol cream on my hands instead of rubbing it off with tissue. the backs of our hands need tlc too.
YES!!!!!🙌🙌🙌
Hi Shereene! If ever you do soon a video about question or a thing like that but I if you could explain why some products peels? Like when you apply them on your skin... it created little build up. Why?
I can fortunately use the 1% retinol from PC around my mouth, I don't get irritation anymore!
This is why I love skin rocks retinal 2 why has the granactive aswell
Is expired (two years) Tretinoin 0.5% dangerous or usable? It has been properly stored. Thanks!
Thank you! ❤
Absolutely!!!!!❤
I've been in retinoic acid for 6 months. But now, my derma has prescripted a cream that has:
0.025% retinoic acid
8% salicylic acid
1% clindamycin (some antibiotic)
He say "trust me", and I've seen amaizin results in their patients with the same formula, and the have hormonal acne (as me).
But, I'm just scared. An I have rosacea, dry skin. Like...
Has any derma told you to do the same? is he crazy? should I avoid this?
Thanks and sorry for my bad english
At what age do you think is a good time to start using retinol?
Can you talk about minimizing pores?
Any products you recommend
once my pillow talk skincare is finished, does that mean the pigmentation will come back again?
I know about the be consistent rule but I can't afford ur skin care for life? One of the higher end products I purchased (and well worth it - not complaining) I just wouldn't be able to afford to buy this consistently
Bc I have certain serums that I like to use and if I have this ALSO it'll be a complicated skincare routine
Benefits of AHA are not comparable to Retinoid . Use Lactic , instead of Glycolic .
I'm running out of back to back here ... how do you add a forth night that's not back to back?
