There is another method for adding thumbnails to RUclips shorts that I found by accident: I wondered why RUclips defined some of my short films as normal videos. I compared them with my other shorts and found out that if the playing time is up to 59 sec, RUclips declares them as shorts. If they are at least 1 minute long, they are classified as normal videos and you can add thumbnails. In this case, you can upload the video via PC and edit it like a normal video. I tested it by varying the playing time of the same video. If you shorten the extended video later with the RUclips editor, it will be listed as short again. The thumbnail remains but can not be changed afterwards.
This is hilarious because back in the early days of RUclips, people would upload a still frame-that they wanted to be their thumbnail-precisely at certain points in their videos so that they could select that as the thumbnail. They couldn’t scrub over the whole video for this; I believe it only let you pick between the first frame, the center frame, and the end frame.
This still works, I just did it. Everyone is right that the pencil is gone. I added the thumb to the beginning and the app automatically made it the thumb. You just have to get the short uploaded to YT, mark it private then go into the editor in YT studio (on desktop/laptop) and do all the same things
i also feel like part of why true custom shorts thumbnails are never coming is because of clickbait when viewers are dropping like flies at the beginning of long form piece it’s a good indicator that there’s something wrong with the video but short form is quicker to get through and by the time you realize you aren’t getting what you clicked on you might have even finished the video
It appears for methat when uploading a video on mobile, its quality is restricted to 720p, resulting in an unsatisfactory appearance. While I'd like to have a better thumbnail, I'm unwilling to compromise the quality by downgrading from 1440p at 60fps to 720p at 30fps. Does anyone know of a solution for this issue, or will I need to wait until the option becomes available on PC?
and a little hack is to add two image of different thumbnails you are considering and put one on beginning and one on end and then you can choose between the two and see how they perform.

adding 1 frame or some second to shorts for thumbnail choice is so obvious. but then suddenly you ask for RUclips editor to delete that, BOOM, MINDBLOWN 😂😂😂 i never think of that lol but yeaaa, sad that i always use sound from other, so this feature won't work. but i think using image from 1 frame in the video is good enough. or maybe you can put custom thumbnail at the end, since at the end, it wont be too annoying

I wonder if it's to prevent people from creating fake thumbnails for clicks and views since your earning Revenue based off of views instead of watch time at this point I know they have problems with people creating clickbait thumbnails for long form videos. Technically you can actually lose the feature for custom thumbnails if you are heavily violating this.
I wish we could do custom thumbnails for shorts even if you couldn't add them until your video has already been published for a week or something. It's just so hard if you want to watch shorts from someone's page to know what you're clicking on. Thumbnails would help this greatly.

Wow, that's a great workaround. It's a shame RUclips makes what should be simple processes very complex and making their users jump through hoops. I prefer uploading Shorts to RUclips on PC rather than on mobile...but maybe I'll have to change that.
I used to do this trick before I "verified" my channel where I would basically show a picture of the thumbnail for the first few seconds, Because I realized that RUclips's automatic thumbnails choose from different parts of the video. The first one is the first couple of seconds.

I kinda stopped watching youtube shorts from the feed because I get mostly irrelevant garbage that I don't care about. I think YT changed the shorts algorithm again and they made it worse... and they keep changing it. I don't care that a stupid video of people doing stupid things has millions of views, it has nothing to do with the content i'm subscribed to, and i don't want to watch it just because it's "viral". I think they want shorts to be like tiktok, but even tiktok allows you to pick a thumbnail from a frame on the video even on desktop, and it has better audience content catering algorithm.
I don't understand why it's so difficult for them to make this function happen. The problem with "making a short" is that the quality of my 4k videos would go to hell hahahha

It would be enough for me to be able to choose an image from the SHORTS on the PC as well !!! I don't believe that YT will ever allow custom thumbnails on SHORTS, it would only lead to clickbait... BUT please allow to manually select preview from uploaded video
Another good way. Is to plan out the thumbnail and put it into the video and then just pick that scene. That's what I do and it seems much simpler.... Just in my opinion

Our RUclips Overlords work in mysterious ways. Still, it baffles me that they aren't all that interested in implementing a proper custom thumbnail feature.

@@KordanorsReviews did you click on the default image on the left top corner? from there you can edit the thumbnail once you upload the video. BTW I didnt use any effects or options in the shorts flow. I did all of that in premiere pro before uploading the video.

When I chose upload video I do have an option to set a thumbnail, but its not a "pen" icon as seen in the video, instead its a picture icon, and that lets me chose a picture as thumbnail...which is then horizontal. This thumbnail is then also ignored when the video is uploaded. So no pen icon and I also dont have a option to select any part of the shorts as thumbnail.
I made a huge mistake, I had to step back for almost a month without posting things (for some personal issues) and now that I came back my content stopped being recommended by the algorithm, I was growing considerably fast and well but I'm not giving up now that I can finally focus on my channel again but I wonder if I will get my Shorts reach back at some point... I can give this advice for other creators: Do not leave you channel without scheduled content if you're not gonna be able to post for some weeks!
My assumption is that when trying to use RUclips short it is very difficult if our channel is a tutorial topic to get organic subscribers and viewers, especially for beginner RUclipsrs, different from those who are already monetized, will this make sense? and the tendency for those who often watch through short videos to be less interested in watching regular videos or long videos, this might be used as an audience poll, especially for those who are still beginner RUclipsrs and haven't been monetized.😕

Whoever is reading DONT give up on your channel. Think about all the hard work that you have already put in. Every youtuber was once in your spot they just kept going. Stay consistent and you will reach your goals. consistent uploads and improvement and some determination is all you need! I am going for 700 subs by the end of May!
Hi! I can't actually edit my shorts after publishing, I have this message saying I can't edit a short. You said it was due to a use of a feature, which I don't do. Is it still possible to edit a short after publishing (november 2023)?
90%+ of my shorts views are from feed. I actually think first frame is more important to decrease the amount of people swiping past. if VIDIQ could cover the swipe away and give some tips on that, I think that would help a lot.

@Romacne and love tips daily stick to a schedule and don't wait until you're "bigger" because the number you want is always going to be pushed bigger by the number you are. Your long-form content will do better over time anyhow. I stick to weekly uploads of main videos and daily uploads of shorts. I also upload extra shorts when I release a main video or on Sundays during my peak hours.
it seems just the act of transferring and uploading from your phone helps in a big way. At least youre able to select which frame in the video is best to be used as the thumbnail

Today I created a shorts video .mp4 on PC and transferred it to DCIM/CAMERA on the phone..... it's not showing under photos to play back or upload to RUclips Shorts? Why not? I have checked it's on phone via looking again via connection to PC. How do I get to view it on phone under photos?
Yeah, I tried doing the 'send the video to your phone and upload it that way to get the option to choose a custom frame of the video' strategy, but I saw the video uploaded was WAY worse quality than the shorts I upload directly on desktop. Would I like to pick a specific frame of the short for a thumbnail myself? Yes. Do I want to post subpar-quality shorts in order to do it? Hell no. They need to just allow us to pick a different frame on desktop and be done with it. Having completely custom thumbnails on a short would raise the bar for thumbnail expectation way too much and lead to misleading thumbs on shorts. I like the middle ground of it having to be a frame from the video itself at least. It's a lot more trustworthy.
it seems this "hack" is already exposed. Just now i was able to do most of the steps, but when i got to the editor to trim the thumbnail. That option is DENIED. But thanks for your strategy. Yours is still the best so far

Overall I still enjoy the experience of creating & uploading content. What I don't enjoy is having to limit my creativity to fit into RUclips's idea of "good" content. Clickable titles & thumbnails are my worst enemy atm 😑

Does anyone remember how you totally could upload custom thumbnails when they first launched shorts? I uploaded around 20 shorts with a thumbnail and they're still there. I don't know why they allowed it at first, but then revoked it.
We do, the difference was RUclips didn't show the custom thumbnail on the shorts shelf. It's a bit odd that YT have had to develop mechanism to prevent uploading of custom thumbnails.
The mathematician in me loves a good workaround! 😁 Even though I am quite happy with choosing a frame from the video, it usually represents my Shorts pretty well.
The tube buddy Crome extension has a thumb nail generator and it works on shorts. (Just found this out yesterday) I’m don’t mean to promote a compaditer I started using them year ago only recently found you guys so currently am running both to see what I get more valuout of or if I’m just going too keep both
There is a better way to do it! You can add a full-size thumbnail on a phone or tablet. You can add a custom thumbnail, but you only get one shot to do it when you first upload. There is an option to upload a custom thumbnail
This is kinda how people made custom thumbnails back in like 2008. They would place a picture at the exact middle of the video and it would appear as the thumbnail lol
Maybe it's better not to add choosing custom thumbnail option because the shorts ads revenue is really low and creating new thumbnail takes time so to be honest it's a waste of time for me.

Thank you 🥰Also been doing it another way here, first i create a custom thumbnail on my laptop, then i use the android youtube app to upload the short video, while the video is still uploading i open the content tab on desktop youtube studio and i drag the custom thumbnail to the video in editing before it finishes uploading
Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. When I upload on my phone it doesn't let me choose the video frame for the thumbnail. Just in case anyone is wondering, I'm using a Pixel 6 (Android).
personally, I don’t want the ability to upload custom thumbnails, because ‘good’ shorts would be based on the thumbnail, so I wouldn’t be able to make lots of youtube shorts, because I would have to make a thumbnail for each of them.
I agree. If I ever make shorts, I don’t want the extra work. Shorts are meant to be more natural - the videos, like those on TikTok, have to speak for themselves.
Unfortunatly when I tried this "trim &cut" was greyed out. When I hover over it with my curser, it says "This video cannot be trimmed because its a RUclips Short." I did everything else up to this point.
I think i found a way to upload Thumbnails for shorts on PC. Just make sure you export the video u edit in h.265 format, and then u get a 15 sec time gap to upload the thumbnail, so make sure u have the thumbnail ready before uploading the short. So just upload the short and upload the thumbnail soon within the time limit. I have also tried this with h.264 which is the normal format but it doesn't work with that format so make sure u export your video in h.265 format for uploading short.

Not having features for desktop but having them for mobile is very stupid and vice versa when it'd be EASY to implement. Not being able to splice clips into a short but only allowing a static clip as a short when we should be able to use the YT editor to create one sounds weird.

it worked for me just now and also i could trim it. Try using upload video option instead of creating a short option maybe.
I just get "preview not available". And with upload video I dont have the option to chose a thumbnail.

Whoever is reading DONT give up on your channel. Think about all the hard work that you have already put in. Every youtuber was once in your spot they just kept going. Stay consistent and you will reach your goals. consistent uploads and improvement and some determination is all you need! I am going for 700 subs by the end of May!

Hi! I can't actually edit my shorts after publishing, I have this message saying I can't edit a short. You said it was due to a use of a feature, which I don't do. Is it still possible to edit a short after publishing (november 2023)?

I just started uploading shorts to try and capture peoples attention when I get more of a following I’ll upload actual videos, I’m not tryna be the biggest but just trying to do this for fun and see how it goes! It takes time but I’m all in it! Any tips?
@Romacne and love tips daily stick to a schedule and don't wait until you're "bigger" because the number you want is always going to be pushed bigger by the number you are.
Your long-form content will do better over time anyhow.
I stick to weekly uploads of main videos and daily uploads of shorts.
I also upload extra shorts when I release a main video or on Sundays during my peak hours.
it seems just the act of transferring and uploading from your phone helps in a big way. At least youre able to select which frame in the video is best to be used as the thumbnail

Today I created a shorts video .mp4 on PC and transferred it to DCIM/CAMERA on the phone..... it's not showing under photos to play back or upload to RUclips Shorts?

Yeah, I tried doing the 'send the video to your phone and upload it that way to get the option to choose a custom frame of the video' strategy, but I saw the video uploaded was WAY worse quality than the shorts I upload directly on desktop. Would I like to pick a specific frame of the short for a thumbnail myself? Yes. Do I want to post subpar-quality shorts in order to do it? Hell no. They need to just allow us to pick a different frame on desktop and be done with it. Having completely custom thumbnails on a short would raise the bar for thumbnail expectation way too much and lead to misleading thumbs on shorts. I like the middle ground of it having to be a frame from the video itself at least. It's a lot more trustworthy.
Oh wow... this is super old school. We used to put a single frame in the video at a very specific time to get thumbnails
it seems this "hack" is already exposed. Just now i was able to do most of the steps, but when i got to the editor to trim the thumbnail. That option is DENIED.

Overall I still enjoy the experience of creating & uploading content. What I don't enjoy is having to limit my creativity to fit into RUclips's idea of "good" content. Clickable titles & thumbnails are my worst enemy atm 😑

Does anyone remember how you totally could upload custom thumbnails when they first launched shorts? I uploaded around 20 shorts with a thumbnail and they're still there. I don't know why they allowed it at first, but then revoked it.
We do, the difference was RUclips didn't show the custom thumbnail on the shorts shelf. It's a bit odd that YT have had to develop mechanism to prevent uploading of custom thumbnails.

The tube buddy Crome extension has a thumb nail generator and it works on shorts. (Just found this out yesterday)
I’m don’t mean to promote a compaditer I started using them year ago only recently found you guys so currently am running both to see what I get more valuout of or if I’m just going too keep both
RUclips now disallows cropping of shorts which means the thumb will remain in the clip. It's a small price to pay though.

There is a better way to do it! You can add a full-size thumbnail on a phone or tablet. You can add a custom thumbnail, but you only get one shot to do it when you first upload. There is an option to upload a custom thumbnail
The fact you have to do that whole work around is just dumb
This is kinda how people made custom thumbnails back in like 2008. They would place a picture at the exact middle of the video and it would appear as the thumbnail lol

Maybe it's better not to add choosing custom thumbnail option because the shorts ads revenue is really low and creating new thumbnail takes time so to be honest it's a waste of time for me.

Thank you 🥰Also been doing it another way here, first i create a custom thumbnail on my laptop, then i use the android youtube app to upload the short video, while the video is still uploading i open the content tab on desktop youtube studio and i drag the custom thumbnail to the video in editing before it finishes uploading

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. When I upload on my phone it doesn't let me choose the video frame for the thumbnail. Just in case anyone is wondering, I'm using a Pixel 6 (Android).
personally, I don’t want the ability to upload custom thumbnails, because ‘good’ shorts would be based on the thumbnail, so I wouldn’t be able to make lots of youtube shorts, because I would have to make a thumbnail for each of them.

Unfortunatly when I tried this "trim &cut" was greyed out. When I hover over it with my curser, it says "This video cannot be trimmed because its a RUclips Short." I did everything else up to this point.

I think i found a way to upload Thumbnails for shorts on PC. Just make sure you export the video u edit in h.265 format, and then u get a 15 sec time gap to upload the thumbnail, so make sure u have the thumbnail ready before uploading the short. So just upload the short and upload the thumbnail soon within the time limit. I have also tried this with h.264 which is the normal format but it doesn't work with that format so make sure u export your video in h.265 format for uploading short.

Not having features for desktop but having them for mobile is very stupid and vice versa when it'd be EASY to implement. Not being able to splice clips into a short but only allowing a static clip as a short when we should be able to use the YT editor to create one sounds weird.
