For the Frame-rate comparison, if the PS2 version seems jaggies, it's because I forced the 480p (since the game is in field rendering, by forcing the 480p it turns in 640x224 ... Yes, it is not very beautiful).
Measuring 480i is almost impossible with for field change.
For the GameCube version, since no 480p mode exists, I forced to blur the small line changes after interlacing, it allows to avoid having "fake new frame", otherwise the software thinks that the game always runs at 60fps (since each line changes at 1 / 60th second).
If you want to compare the graphical difference of the three versions, refer to the beginning of the video and not to the framerate.
    ----
    Hi,
So here's my very first DigitalFoundry-style technical analysis video on a 128-bit generation game.
I find that this generation is very interesting to see the different versions of a single game since each hardware are all different, unlike today.
I decided to pick Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, when I test with curiosity the GameCube version of the game. The difference was so huge on a support "Supposed" to be more powerful than the PS2 than I had to make a comparison video.
So, of course, this GameCube version seems more the missed portage than the technical limitation of the console.
The PlayStation 2 version is the very first to be released. It contains all kinds of features specific to its hardware, such as the abundance of transparent effects. But also a rendering in "field rendering", which means that this version can ONLY rotate in 480i to have a semblance of resolution in "640x448".
The A & B frame are rendered at 640x224 in odd line and every 1 / 60th of a second. The game therefore runs at 60fps via this method. Unfortunately, like many PlayStation 2 games in this time (2000-2001). The problem of this render is an aliasing effect quite present during fast movements.
This type of rendering is particularly suitable for CRT TVs, the advantage is that it gives a picture of great clarity, the disadvantage is that it goes very poorly on LCD and that the aliasing seems pronounced.
For the framerate drops, however, I accuse the fact of having forced in 480p, because some drop did not exist in 480i. (Like lvl 4 in Castle on the game).
However, it remains the original version of the game. It is available in two versions, 1.00 (US) and 1.03 (PAL) which is the very first and the second version which is 1.01 (US) and 2.00 ( PAL), this version fixes a few bugs (less box, adding little music on the radio during the intro, trap that did not activate, snow disabled in the cave on the first level), but especially the loads. (Considered to be very long on its release).
The XBOX Original version, released on April 15, 2002 is the second version to be available, it is based on the 1.01 US version of the PS2. In addition, the port was made by the game developers.
This version does not add any content, except a fur effect in the graphics concerning Crash or Coco. The framerate remains stable at 60fps, with a few drops per moment non-existent on PS2 (in particular transparent / alpha effects). The game seems to be render in 512x432? and then resized in NTSC signal to 720x480.
It's 480p compatible on this version. (PAL version is not PAL60 compatible).
On Xbox, the graphics seem to benefit from Anti-Aliasing to soften the contours. Some textures have been touched up, some appear sharper than on PS2, others don't. It also suffers from the absence of an anisotropic filter, which causes blur textures in the distance.
On some level, the draw distance is better than on PS2, on other, it's less.
Regarding the draw distance of objects (Wumpa Apples / Crates), it is greater than the PS2.
Some transparent effects (Alpha) of the PS2 version are nonexistent or inferior on this Xbox version.
The GameCube version is complicated. It is a port of Eurocom based on the PS2 version 1.01 (maybe on unfinished build of the game)
It’s probably the worst version. Lighting problem, BIG Framerate problem (very rarely at 60fps, often at 30fps, sometimes decreases at 20fps), the transparency effects no longer exist. The image is cut hiding information compared to the PS2 / XBOX version. It seems to run in 640x448, NTSC signal displaying this on 720x480.
I can still be wrong with some info about the game (anti-aliasing, resolution, V-Sync), not having the knowledge to analyze.
Tested on real console, PS2, Xbox & Wii in GameCube backward compatibility mode (Not Nintendont). Three in YUV (Component), captured on an SC512-n1 acquisition card.

It was pretty common for multi platform games to look worse on GameCube due to the halved storage capacity of mini discs compared to DVD.

    • @ryanburke5549
      @ryanburke5549 Год назад +4

@@DeafeningCha If I’m not mistaken, Wrath of Cortex on PS2 was stored on CDs instead of a single-layered DVD, right? If that’s the case, the game would’ve been 700MB or somewhere a bit lower than that. To be fair, CDs were used quite often during the PS2’s early years. However, the GameCube optical discs would’ve had more storage than a typical PS2 CD, with it measuring around 1.4-1.5GB. Then again, the GameCube port would have been converted from the original PS2 release, so my guess is that some extra space was needed for porting assets over.
I’m not a technical wizard or anything, and all of this is me making my own theories. However, I always thought the GameCube port was not as good as it could’ve been. I have a hunch that the outcome of the GameCube port was with it being worked on by an external development team. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but there exists a prototype around December 2001 for the GameCube version. Believe it or not, the framerate is practically equal between that and the final release. Development can be a massive gray area, so there is a possibility that there may have been troubles within Eurocom around the time the port was being made. I have no idea…

The PS2 is the sharpest (surprising when it's up against xbox) and has the best transparent effects (as far as objects). Also, textures are more detailed (such as wumpa fruit leaves and the background). It also has better heat like distortion effects even though fire looks complete trash on all three consoles.
The Xbox has the best lighting and water transparency effects (these effects are MILES better than sunshine! 12:51) , and you can't miss that the bandicoots have fur (and aren't just PS1 models "enhanced for Xbox One X")... although coco doesn't look good with or without fur.
The gamecube doesn't really compare against the other two, it quite literally looks like a PS1 game with pre rendered backgrounds. Also, where the hell is the special abilities after every boss? One other thing, Gamecube can't make up it's mind if it wants to run at 60fps or 20fps in Compactor Reactor.
One thing I noticed is that, if reflective objects aren't reflective on PS2, they are reflective on Xbox; same thing if something isn't reflective on Xbox. Such as the shields on PS2 , and the rings surrounding the ball that crash is in on Xbox (Well, it's semi reflective on PS2).

Wow. The GameCube really is graphically the worst version of the game. Not only are there noticeable dips in frame rate during gameplay, the lighting actually looks worse, the textures are pixelated and there are some graphical hiccups that weren’t present in the PS2 and even XBOX versions such as an orange ring outline surrounding Uka Uka and the ghost animations for Crash and Coco being completely transparent and lacking any detail. Yes, the GameCube version does load faster than the PS2 version, but all it is that it’s just a black background with the word LOADING. At least PS2 version had something visually going on while the game is loading with Crash and sometimes Coco falling through that void to the level.

Travelers Tales really botched the GC port...such a shame, absolutely no good reason for this to have been the case.

Why does the PS2 version look the best? The Xbox version is the one that supports the fur texture.

Because its the best one, Today I'm put the Gamecube version in the WII to test thinking that will be great, and it sucked, tested the ps2 version on Component and was amazed again. the ps2 on HD or pen drive is the best version SO SO SO FAR. I Think the Fur and Hi Res andd Textures, won't work flawless, the sharp Image os the ps2 even on low res, is lost on Xbox.

Xbox>Ps2>gamecube. The Xbox version actually felt like a next gen Crash game. Levels like "Jungle rumble" and "H2 oh no" are perfect examples of this 💯

2nd best: Xbox, has better fur textures than all of them, but overall blurrier than PS2
    Worst: GameCube

Xbox has the best textures and performance but gamecube has the best dynamic lighting in cutscenes and in some areas.
It was the last platform for Crash bandicoot the warth of cortex so that's maybe they did fix it in the last.

IMO. The PS2 had some better graphics.

The PS2 clearly has much better reflections and water effects, And sports higher res graphics that also show up much cleaner and clearer than the Xbox
Xbox still looks good and has the fur-effects going for it, But I think it was too much of a compromise to add in over extra headroom for where the PS2 is better Xbox seems to have better lighting in some areas. Xbox also has better water reflections in the lava flying level? And some areas do look better but are blurry, maybe due to Anti-Aliasing effects?
I think the PS2 looks much better overall in most areas but can see where Xbox also has advantages and the fur effects
The Gamecube version is just terrible

The playstation version is By far the best one. The gamecube Sucks, xbox has some features, but lacks, the ps2 crystal clear graphics. Deleting the GC version in 3 ...2 ....1 ....
