- Shane Hmiel is widely known as one of the biggest “What ifs” in NASCAR, however his story is long and controversial. In the early 2000s, he was a hot commodity and a rising star. By 2006, he was banned from NASCAR forever. After an unbelievable comeback in USAC, his racing career came to a tragic ending. Shane went through some of the highest highs and the lowest lows of any race car driver, and remains one of the most polarizing figures in NASCAR’s history.

Buddy of mine Iraces a bit with Shane and says from talking with him that he's come a long way in his recovery from injuries and addiction. He's definitely a winner at life. Prayers for Shane and hope he keeps going strong
He hasn't logged onto Iracing for over 2 years. And says his last official was in 2014.
AMEN Brother.
Prayers 🙏 for Shane. Tough young man.
@@shaynejenkins446his account is “shane r hmiel” and he is still very active on iracing. i raced with him one time last year. he was just as reckless in iracing as he was in nascar in that race. some 13 year old kid was arguing with him at one point and shane said something along the lines of “i’m fucking paralyzed and i’ll still race better than you.” the kid probably had no clue who he was lol
@@shaynejenkins446 it is possible he made a new account at some point. I still have doubts on the claim, but it isn't too farfetched
This is the same sanctioning body that let Aaron Fike get a top five on heroin LMAO
Yah that was pretty crazy he’d have to race high cause I’d think that one cannot drive while jonesing, especially being a heroin
@@user-uh8ph6yy5jActually, a serious addict appears amazingly normal whilst using, and a train wreck when in withdrawal.
or drunk on 180-proof moonshine, the founding members/pre-1990 nowadays probably would get kicked out but then again they probably don't want to be around there "type's of elitism" etc
@@UncleKennysPlace Not heroin. They are a wreck no matter what.
@@xTakumEx There are tons of opioid addicts that maintain a day job and an active addiction for years without even their close family knowing. Heroin is the same as any other opioid. It isn't any more powerful than morphine. In fact, most prescription opioids like oxymorphone and hydromorphone are far more powerful than heroin.
Such a shame what happened to Shane. He had such potential. Unfortunately his career took a turn for the worse.
Raising a child with bipolar tested everything my wife and I had. Just getting an accurate diagnosis for our daughter took more than a year, let alone finding the right medication for her. I have a lot of empathy for Shane and it sounds like he has a good support team surrounding him as an adult.
My wife has a sister who is bipolar. It’s hell sometimes for her family and spills over to us sometimes. We live half way across the country from her family and it’s tough, I can only imagine it on a daily basis and having to deal with it as your job of a parent. I have another friend who’s sister is also bipolar as well as her mother and they also self medicate and live in the streets. It’s a tough life and thing to deal with.
The brain is the only organ doctors just guess at when making a diagnosis.
It's especially rough having it as a kid while a parent has it as well. Throw in some ASD and you've got a recipe for a _wonderful_ childhood 😄
Bipolar is harsh, but living with a step parent who had bipolar disorder and a social personality disorder was nothing short of horrible.
Keep a good eye on your son or daughter, I lost a friend to BPD...
You are just bad parents. I was told I have adhd and bipolar my whole life. My mom had me taking more drugs than I can count from age 5 up. Literally 20+ pills per day at times. I moved out at a few weeks after my 18th birthday and stopped taking all medications that I had been forced to my whole life. Felt instantly better. Brain fog gone plenty of energy that I thought I didn't have. I'm 25 now and have a house and run my own business. Maybe you shouldn't drug your kids because they act like kids sometimes
I think a big take away here is that you should never look at an addict as sub-human. Many are good people who have been overcome by demons.
Agree
The amount of HATE Shane used to get and still does get even after being injured is sad and shows a lack of empathy in the world. A 22 year old kid making almost a million a year ruined his life, got it back together and then he was injured. People still write on here and call him a cripple and addict. That doesn’t make you “edgy” it makes you a piece of trash. Just my opinion
I agree, i have followed him from NASCAR till now and still do with his recovery! He keeps digging and i admire him for that!
addiction really is a disease. the amount of admiration i have for shane is massive, i don’t know half of the pain and struggle he has gone through, but his resilience is inspirational to say the least.
it was weed for fuck sakes… you people act like he was high on meth on the track😂
I went to that race at Terre Haute where Shane got hurt. I stopped at the Hardee’s right there. When I came out, I heard a big “WHUMP!” When I got to the track they already had him out of the car, but the car was still sitting there with the cage pushed down. He had become a USAC favorite, and we were proud to support his rehabilitation tour. I think he had been invited for an Indycar test the following week.
What'd ya get at Hardees?
@@empire0 Probably a burger, fries, and a Coke back when you could buy one without a mortgage. Why does it matter? Anyone that has been to THAT knows where that Hardee’s is, and stopping spared me seeing that accident.
@@projoebiochem Glad you didn't have to see it. Side note I just left a Toyota dealership where they tried to get me into a 11.9% APR with 800 credit score. I left before the salesmen had time to crack his water bottle open. I too miss the days when shit wasn't sky high.
I was diagnosed with Bipolar when I turned 18. This is not a sad story this is an amazing story!! Way to go Shane!! Sending you love and support. No one knows the pain of Bipolar unless you have it!! 😢 believe me i get it!!
Can you look at making a video about Kyle Petty's Rockingham wins in the early 90s? Over the course of three wins he nearly lapped the field for each race, and led something like 85% of the laps. It's something no one ever brings up.
I remember those Rockingham races when Kyle Petty dominated. He'd run with his left side tires on the flat coming off of turn 4. I'll never forget it.
Interesting! Was he dominant at Rockingham for the length of his career or just early on? And was this in the Cup cars or the Busch cars?
What has this to do with Shane?
@@peterrobbins2862nothing, it's a request for a future video
@@peterrobbins2862 It is a bit of a tie in if you consider what happened when Kyle and his cousin got pulled over by the cops and they found a bunch of coke . It's good when your wing man will take a case to protect you .
Nobody asking any questions about a fucking rollcage collapsed in on top of him?
Im sure there were hours of inspections and questions but when a wreck like that throws a car into a concrete wall cage first, that wall will win almost every time, even with the best cage. Cages protect well for roll overs and are fairly strong but they arent designed to absorb a direct impact cage first into the leading edge of a concrete barrier.
@@warrenmichael918I’ve seen monster trucks land on their roof and not crush their driver. This was a crap welding job.
@@BillyRamirez welds were fine. That monster truck wasnt running 50 and being flipped cage first onto the leading edge of a small strong barrier wall like this. This was just a freak accident and if the monster truck took a hit the same way , it would get pretty banged up BUT,,,,its cage is much larger than this little car was so the driver has more room inside of the caged in area.
Pretty sure they could make roll cages to withstand that kinda impact. They probably didn't see it as worth it because they're comparatively light cars and well the series doesn't make nearly as much money as some others.
Hopefully they do see it as worth it now. But it wouldn't surprise me if, like in most safety standards in racing (and the world at large), it wouldn't surprise me if they'd wait until the accident list is long and has a few deaths on it.
@@SoulDevoured agree, they will most likely just say this was a freak accident and do nothing to change the cages until it happens or almost happens a few more times.
Yesss ty for uploading this ! I've always wanted to find out what was Shane's personal life n background was before the drug use .
At 4:32, his car control is on full display! He makes the move on keller, but then spins out himself, and never stopped driving!
The weed made him a better driver and nascar got scared so they banned him
A great story to share with race fans! The story of Shane Hmiel is a fascinating one.
The man had so much talent, but unfortunately, couldn't keep his emotions and addictions under check.
From what viewers told me, he is super kind and incredible on iRacing.
My nephew was targetted by dealers when he was a kid living in Germany. His early life was totally ruined by those scumbags. Parents shouldn't be blamed if they miss the signs - its rarely obvious. He is now clean, a father, and building a career. He did jail time, and has suffered sexual abuse. Users are victims. Shane is a survivor, what a momentous life story. One life live it...
always love watching your videos!
I was just thinking about him 2 days ago and now I come across this. Thank you, the kid was getting it together then that happened, glad he's still here and has a team.
Synchronicities!
Great deep dive!
Excellent video! Thanks
Thanks for the video and time you invested .
Funny how Shane was banned for marijuana use by the man running NASCAR at the time,Brian France, grandson of NASCAR's founder Big Bill France.Brian was hopelessly addicted to Oxycodone,
The Frances aren’t out on the track putting other driver’s unnecessarily at risk
That said Brian France pretty much had himself a silent retirement too.
Apparently you don't see the hypocrisy . France only controlled the league, no big deal.
@@RATTL3R186 I see the hypocrisy, I also see that France isn’t in a position to single handedly put a driver into the wall
Exactly, was France driving? I bet you're someone that thinks it's okay for Trump to be a criminal and be president.
I'm glad he learned from his past experiences, appreciates those around him, and is still trucking along; moving forward so positively. I'm glad his story didn't end on a tragic note and has potential to be a whole lot better
WOW! Dale Earnhardt JRs respect and response towards his friends addiction and his honest standing with him continuing to hope for the best and not shitting on him is just wow man I wish we had more guys like him, but also was he high on weed or just tested positive? There's a diff....
That was Jr's wake-up call just saying
He was also doing Coke. The erratic driving tipped them off so I would say he was driving under the influence.
According to his driving he was DUI, he was higher than a kite being honest...
So im racing the roar before the 24 on iracing and this dude is just laying it down, he later mentions on chat hes using hand controls. As someone who wasnt a nascar fan I had no idea who he was and could only think who the fuck is this guy.
This put alot in perspective
The ban… and subsequent paralyzing injuries have really ultimately resulted in an amazing individual full of resilience and determination. He is a lesson for all of us in how to endure, overcome and thrive in life no matter the circumstances.
Getting addicted to the worst stuff (h&c) was one of the best things that I did. Being on it taught me a lot about how people get treated on it. Getting off of it then made me the person who I am today. Dgs has given me far more than they have taken away. Not for everyone though - you cannot use them as an excuse to be a dirtbag. If you do, you probably won't come back.
Goodness gracious, that crash...
Very good video. Thank you
This was a solid story. Had no idea about this
If you look at the Keller wreck it looks like Jason hadn't cleared Shane when he came down.....my opinion. Kind of hard to be sure with the video angles. Either way it was a bad deal for both.
I’m just halfway through the video, but there’s so much nuance in a story like this. Racers can drink as long as they aren’t driving drunk right? Yet im sure dude would’ve tested positive even if he smoked after the race last Sunday. Unless of course a driver can use no substances, and I know pot being illegal in states at the time made a difference, but it’s just more of a shame to think of how criminalized it was and the lives ruined.
As for the coke part, well that’s harder to be sympathetic to, he must have been super unlucky or using a lot to still test positive by then. Hopefully the guy got better, I wish him the best
God bless you Shane! I'm from North Carolina too, not far from you. I've got a friend that lives on Pleasant Garden road. I squashed my spinal cord in two places, and died in my backyard. God spoke to me when I was gone.. He told me to get up, and helped me. I've had such a long road coming back, I can fully empathize with your situation. I know what it felt like to be paralyzed, and I thought it was going to be forever. God had different plans for me though, and I was told to pass my story on.. I admire you for what you've done, and God has other plans for you too. Be safe, and the best your endeavors!
Im not saying you should race under the influence and cocaine is definitely sketchy but i think its funny after a race you can literally drink yourself until you have alcohol poisoning and have a horrible hamgover and still be allowed to race but if you smoke a joint after a race , you're considered "a drug addict"
A few things to remember...
1) We're talking about NASCAR. Not gonna be the most progressive when it comes to substances outside of alcohol and tobacco.
2) We're talking about 20 years ago, during which we've come some ways in our views on it as a society.
3) The way it stays in our system, even if inactive, affects the way people view it as well.
Hell, there was a point in time when drinking and driving didn't have the same stigma that it does now, and I'd say we still don't treat all cases of intoxication as seriously as we should, but sometimes it do be how it be.
Some valid points for sure
NO ONE was getting drunk and racing on the track, but he was under the influence of drugs WHILE DRIVING. Big difference.
@@tmilesffltruth bomb dropped. Context I’d important but those pushing drugs know that they just see nothing other than the narrative.
Good video. Thanks.

Sorry about the misunderstanding, i wasnt mocking your dreams, i was quoting The Big Lebowski 🙂
Did they improve the rollcage requirements for those cars? It feels like that shouldn't have happened.
just a freak accident. Cages werent designed to be thrown cage first onto a leading edge of a concrete barrier.
@@warrenmichael918and seatbelts weren't designed to keep drivers brains from slamming into their skulls.
But the HANS device was designed to prevent that. Or at least dramatically reduce the chances of it happening.
Drivers of F1 and Indy were statistically unlikely to have something slam into their face from the tiny gap in the front of the car but it did happen in "freak accidents" and that's why they now have the halo mounted over the cockpit.
The backplate wasn't designed to protect the front of the driver's head. So they designed something to do that.
It's not crazy to ask why that roll cage failure happened and what the officials are going to do about it.
@@SoulDevoured very last part of your comment is the correct part, what are they going to do about it. When things are made and seem to work right, they are accepted as good enough , until a freak accident happens , then they re examine the design. All i was saying is that the cage was made to be safe for most wrecks but this wreck was a weird circumstance and the limits of the cage were found. Its not like it was made wrong, it just needs to be better now that this has happened.

I have ADHD and have used weed since I was 19 with a couple breaks in between. Now that I'm 32 I'm starting to understand its negative effect on me both mentally and physically. I'm about a month sober and it's taken a bit to reprogram my brain to feel stress and anxiety without constantly medicating myself. I can understand some of the struggles he's been through.
Come on dude it ain't the weed you're just being lazy and using it for an excuse. I have ADHD dyslexia and I am borderline on the spectrum and weed is the only thing that makes me normal
Don't listen to the shmoe here that doesn't understand brain chemistry. You're doing great!
Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about medications you can take temporarily to manage your ADHD through the transition. ADHD can make anxiety way way worse.
Those two weeks in the coma must have really been hell on him mentally and then dealing with those life changing injuries afterwards i can't imagine. I give him a lot of credit for coming out of it swinging and being so positive.
Being in a coma isn't like they portray in the movies. It's a brutal experience mentally, really brutal, I know.
No it's not, yawn. I was in a coma for over 3 months I was taken off life support and woke up. Not very comforting knowing you'r parents were going to let you die. But I came out of it with nothing much worse for wear other than some muscle atrophy lost 45lbs nearly a third of my body weight at the time. I broke my leg about 10 years after that and it was a way worse experience. Layed up for months unable to walk without a cane for over a year. I'd rather be back in another coma best sleep I've had in my life. You all have it too easy
BTW take yourself off the organ donor lists. I did. The hospital convinced my parents I wasn't coming back because they wanted to chop me up for parts. You do realize they sell organs to the highest bidder right? They don't give them to somone who actually needs them most the time if they don't have money or enough insurance
Wow, that's quite a Story!
Wishing him all the best, Shane is a fighter!
A very moving story.
Lucky to survive that USAC sprint wreck at all!
I totally admire him for becoming a car owner and giving back to racing.
This situation was a bit more complicated than it should have been.
A misdiagnosis of ADHD from childhood screwed up a good portion of the first part of his life. NASCAR did nothing to help & labeled him as a druggie. At the time, a lot of us bought into that.
It wasn't until a few years after the permanent ban that the dark side of NASCAR's substance abuse policy was truly revealed, & especially in regards to the Kevin Grubb tragedy & Jeremy Mayfield controversy. All that plus the truth regarding the actual issue with Hmiel, Bipolar Disorder, has made us wiser regarding mental health & more skeptical towards NASCAR's substance abuse policy today.
Nascar's drug policy bullshit is also what completely screwed Allmendinger out of a prosperous cup career with Penske.
Did he not fail drug tests 3 times though.
@@Tomtraubert2009 He did but... the drugs themselves were only a catalyst of a much bigger issue; One that has since been rectified with the real medication Shane needed once the correct diagnosis was determined.
@@Suburban-United It is NASCAR's job to see that people do not compete while using substances that could create a safety issue for them or someone else. The WHY is not their problem. As a former racing crew member, I was governed under those policies. It's REAL SIMPLE. If you cannot do your job in racing without using substances on the banned list, then go find something else to do. As someone who was subject to random drug testing, I would consult on even simple over the counter remedies to make sure I was compliant with the rules.
@@Suburban-United The only bullshit is YOU. None of the other drivers want to be involved in a wreck that could jeopardize their health and careers because someone is using drugs. He was given two chances in rehab to get clean and HE blew it. It's a bonus that he never hurt someone while strung out on drugs.
intersting video .. I don't follow NASCAR at all, but his story actual transcends sport and is more about life in general.
Just was listening to the Jeremy Mayfield saga on the Dale Jr Download. They were discussing why NASCAR took on such a sudden hardline stance on random testing and Jr said it was because of someone that was driving on track that had tested positive... never mentioned Hmiel directly, but now I realize it was him... Jr is class act and a good friend to Hmiel despite his personal challenges.
Sad story, and fwiw I'm glad that he has his life back. Substance addiction is a bastard.
Thank god he went and got the help he needed to get clean off drugs and to survive that vicious crash... And then powering through that. What a guy
It is a darn shame for this young and talented man that made poor choices and decisions in his racing career. I am sad that he sustained serious injuries in his sprint car crash, but very proud and glad that Shane turned his life around!!
What a tragic story!!! BUT, people need to be held accountable for their actions. I completely support NASCAR but I'm so proud of Shane for not giving up!!!
Weed bad.
Beer good?
Doesn't seem right...
what about the coke?
There's not a comparison - Alcohol kills more people than all others combined - don't get me started on cigarettes -

That was a nasty sprint car crash into the wall. Amazing he made it through all that.
Stacker 2? is that like the hard drive doubling software? wow, what a blast from the past!
It was a diet pill/ truck stop speed.
I've always wondered what could've should've happened with Shane or with Kevin Ward Jr. if 3CHI was a common comodity back in the day?
Crazy to think how much people's lives were ruined before weed was finally legalized
My son got his autograph at Bristol weeks before he was suspended from NASCAR, it's a shame the sprint car crash he had, he was talented for sure.
Prayers for Shane.
A mistake is when you try to get into the wrong car or something like that. Doing drugs is a choice that many people make and regret later.
I remember the reactions of what happened with Rob Moroso. It is sad when people with so much going for them throw it away for stupid reasons.
Life is hard. I've heard Shane turned things around for the better. That was probably not very easy.
The fact he had a wrong diagnosis which then turned out to be bipolar which wasn’t tested correctly even when diagnosed at that time definitely needs to be considered big time here.
I’m just glad he’s alive , bless him , addiction is so tough to get out of .
Such a shame
Never heard of this guy, but then I couldn' name 5 nascar drivers
I used to love racing but it's getting to be a drag, other than Indy. These stories just fill me with sadness and depression.

He said the same about you, just so you know.

Talented guy that unfortunately grew up to late. To bad he didn’t get the correct psychological care early on.
Seeing that roll cage pancake was concerning because I thought it would take that impact a bit better.
And this may sound like a joke, but it isn’t…I’d love to see a souped up wheelchair race series on go kart tracks. I know enough wild combat vets in chairs that would probably be game.
He actually used to follow me on Twitter, and was starting to contemplate about Politics, and other things that wasn't related to racing, and in my opinion, it was somewhat inappropriate. He eventually suspended his account. It was a shame with what had he went through, and he would've made a name for himself with some of NASCAR's biggest stars, hadn't he made the choices he mad nearly 20 years ago.
Inappropriate because you disagreed with his politics?
Shane Hmeil if the hero with the dark backstory. But he became the good person he is now.
As someone with adhd smoking weed has the same effects that adhd medication has. He likely had it and when being taken off the meds was self medicating to feel normal again. Very unfortunate
Unfortunately the garage was filled w many drivers, owners, and crew chiefs who had issues w Shane Hmiel's driving.
Who can forget the time Dale Jarrett got out of his Infinity Series car during a red flag at Bristol and walked over to Shane Hmiel's car to give him an earful about disrespectful driving?
Now when a HOF driver does that, you know something was amiss w Shane Hmiel.
Failing a substance abuse test 3 times gave us our answer.
No hypocrisy there.
Remember Dale Jarrett giving him a lesson through the window net after a Bush race.
Hahaha i remember that. I think it actually happened during the red flag. Dale just went over to him and yelled at him in the window 😂

Granted, it would be pretty much a ceremonial gesture, but I'd love to see NASCAR reinstate Shane Hmiel.
they dont have wheel chair accessible cars bud, isnt he still in a chair?
Somebody told on him.
in canada pot is fully legal now so he be ok now
coke isnt though.
Let me change my question a little, I have a medical card…it’s not a medical prescription…..so, they allow CBD=3chi because there’s only 0.3% thc roughly (which is crappy shit is probably the next K2 it still gets you high) but you can drink alcohol that’s so stupid
What a cool story. Weed while driving and going that fast. I love weed, but sometimes you have to put the pipe down.
So Is smoking weed illegal(for nascar) , or was it they caught him smoking before driving? Kyle Busch had 3chi on his car so did Tyler Reddick which is delta 8 (derivative of weed) were the drivers allowed to smoke that if so, was it allowed only once not driving the car race, was over or is that a sponsor they can’t consume? They can consume beer which is is most definitely more dangerous then smoking weed. I’ve never blacked out from smoking weed but 4 or 5 shots later I’m out whackin mail boxes thinkin I’m Michael Myers. So while I’m asking if hypothetically you do smoke weed could you be a nascar driver and just smoke it after the race or would they ban you reguardless because it stays in your system which is a bunch of crap since the effect is so minimal and calming compared the Busch, Budweiser, Monster Beast, so on so forth
well back then, weed was all illegal. The coke he tested positive for was too.
Saw him pass three cars on the front stretch of the Hoosier 100. Would not lift.
Holly cow, whay a story!!
The guy planned his own life out - whether he knew it or not ! Damn son.
wow! its amazing how 20 yrs ago, smoking a little bit of weed could get you tossed out of nascar.... nowadays half the field smokes, not BEFORE /ON raceday, but they do!
"...blazing fast..." Ha ha.
The lesson is, dont do drugs...period!
Shane Hmiel had a really disappointing career in NASCAR, especially since he had an aggressive way of driving, and the only time he seemed like a successful driver was when he was wrecking people.
As long as he isn't driving he can smoke all the weed he wants now.
By their standards for "erratic driving" Dale Sr. should have been tested after every race.
I suspect the blow wasn't so much to treat Bipolar but because it feels really good.
Sprint cars, the scariest ride.
lol, yeah, he was blazing fast
Shane drove for who? What was the owners past?
