I'm not the biggest fan of this game's story mode. At least in 8 and 9 you unlock new characters by beating that mode. 8 gives you Blooper and Hammer Bro (chosen at random, I got Blooper as Luigi, then you play the star battle mode again with the character you unlocked to get the other) and 9 gives you Shy Guy and Kamek (play solo mode with any character and beat all the boards. Both will be unlocked at the same time)

Eternal Star is the final board in Mario Party. It is unlocked by collecting 100 Stars and completing all other boards at least once.
Yea neither did I when I played this as a kid. I didn't have friends to play with and I didn't have the patience to collect 100 stars by myself lol
