Avarya
Directed by Gökalp Gönen
www.imdb.com/n...
"Sci-fi shorts are typically glossy exercises in world-building or smart snippets of speculative storytelling. Both poles are popular and both are capable of being recommended on this site should they excel in their respective aims. But, a sci-fi short that combines brains and beauty? That's something special indeed, and I think we've got a delightful example of that for you today.
Avarya is a massively ambitious 20min short from Turkish 3D-artist Gökalp Gönen that marries brain-bending appeal to luscious CG animated visuals. The plot provides the thoughtful, but twisty pleasures of a great "Twilight Zone" episode, and while that makes it a somewhat sedate affair where large stretches of its runtime are dialogue-fueled scenes between two characters in a single location, Gönen's art is more than up to the task of providing the "wow-factor" that dedicated sci-fi junkies crave.
An aging man sits alone in a splendid spacecraft. He has, long ago, abandoned Earth to an undisclosed fate in order to become a pioneer of a new world and establish a new future for humanity. Every comfort has been provided him by the ship's robotic overseer who executes the search for a new planet. Spending much of the journey in deep sleep, he is periodically awoken to weigh in on the suitability of each new candidate. However, in his quest for immortality, he has ceded too much power-transforming his arrogant quest into tedious imprisonment within a gilded cage.
Inspired by Asimov's classic book, I, Robot, where the titan of sci-fi laid out his famous 3 laws of robotics, Gönen was excited to reflect on the moral problems created by thinking mechanisms that are too complex to be distinguished from the human mind. Audiences will more quickly be reminded of another entry in the sci-fi canon though, as the character of the robotic overseer shares thematic similarities to HAL 9000 of 2001: A Space Odyssey-the cold logic of its programming overwhelming the human desires that birthed it.
Indeed, without giving too much away, this divide between robot and human is repeatedly blurred within the story in thoughtful ways. The man initially creates a system to aid his quest, and yet finds himself beholden to it, no less a component of a repeating function than any other. It is a tragedy, but one driven by the impudence of his aims-for immortality, for his eagerness to abandon Earth in pursuit of a perfect paradise. Driven by the interaction of robotic thinking and human desire Gönen has created a parable for the self-destructive nature of human aspiration.
Themes aside, Gönen's visual conception of the spaceship is astonishing, with a rather unnecessary, but absolutely glorious dedication to environmental design. The setting of the ship is a recreation of the man's home down the smallest atomic detail, and the sweep is fantastic, from the leather grain of his couch, to the dust motes of his expansive library. Furthermore, the interaction of this familiar-looking space with the mechanics of the ship itself is awe-inspiring, particularly when the ship travels, inducing the kind of large-scale thrills that only sci-fi can provide. In watching, it is clear that the execution of the film was no small endeavor, made possible via funding from the Turkish Ministry of Culture which enabled Gönen to assemble a small team for the project which was produced over 2 years of exhausting effort.
Upon completion, the film toured film festivals, picking up Best Short at the team's native Istanbul Film Festival, as well as spots in well-regarded programs such as Short Shorts Asia. We're pleased to host the film's online debut today! As for Gönen's next steps, he tells us that he has completed a followup short film, Lal, which is set to premiere at the Oldenburg Film Festival soon." - S/W Curator Jason Sondhi

It made me feel so proud that a Turkish 3D artist accomplished such a beautiful work. I hope to see more.
What metal prejudice do you have that surprised you that a Turkish 3D artist put together this incredible great piece of art?
@@joejohnson6321 There are couple of Turkish artists that makes a good job in their leagues. Yet, if you personally know a lot about Turkey, being an artist also means you have to cope with a lot of economical problems after graduating. This is the main reason, obviously, and seeing a Turkish artist's 3D short film, with Turkish voice-acting is just made me proud :)
Yeap most def 😍
love turki from pak
people not Turks = people are the genius and his nationality is of no consequence.
2019’da Kadıköyde iksv ulusal kısa film yarışması gösteriminde izlemiştim. Gerçekten tüm salon ayakta alkışlamıştık. Tebrikler Gökalp Gönen👏🏻
Storyline, animation, art-crafts, beautiful geometry and all that wrapped in deadend logic designed to explore the last option ... incredibly brilliant!
Thank you Joe !
Coincidentally, I'm a fan of the DUST channel, an avid reader of Isaac Azimov, and I found myself in Istanbul, Turkey. Last evening, I was just browsing through some sci-fi shorts, and I found this jewel. The author, Mr. Gökalp Gönen, deserves an award for this. It's priceless.
Greetings from a Bulgarian admirer,
komşu :)
The entire production is huge! The character design, especially the ornate robot is mouthwatering! The peacock detailing is very intriguing, probably with reference to the id/ego mindset of the robot? Beautiful.
One of the best animated short film ever, didn`t expect that.
Hello! I am the director of Avarya ^^ Please shoot if you have any questions :) Enjoy! (Please use RUclips's subtitles, if you want a better vision and more language options)
Fantastic work bro 😍😍

If you are the director, I have some questions. Why doesn't he remember anything everytime the loop starts?
@@h.k.3704 robot reminds him “even the dust particles between books is the same as his room as it was” so i figure, everytime they start over, robot version of the man starts with the memories of a man who has left the earth for the first time. Maybe the real body which is hidden inside the ship, collects all the memories, we don’t now.
@@triplepen "So I figure" "We don't know"... you aren't the director right?
Tebrikler!
Hocam penpal'ım olur musunuz, resim çizmeyi seviyorum ;-;
Incredibly beautiful to watch with a fascinating story that gets better as it evolves !
Amazing! The art work, the story, the concept, just everything is amazing!

Wow. This is a work of genius. just...everything. Perfect example of "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it". Thank you.
I'm a "dubbed not subbed" guy, but I'm *extremely* glad this got my attention
right away and kept me from continuing on and seeking... the next alternative...
Points out a true lesson. Grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Dang! Talk about Groundhog Day! A never ending journey. Wash, rinse, repeat... forever!
A year and a half ago I saw just a few shots of this film, projected on the ceiling of filmmuseum EYE. Instantly I decided I wanted to see this film. I found out the title, but there was no place I could go to see it. And now I found it here on RUclips and I’m so delighted I finally could watch this jewel of a movie. It’s amazing and beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Hahaha, that was the world premiere ^^ I am glad we found each other again!

I thought it just sucked overall.
Gökalp emeğine sağlık,muhteşem + gururlandım ..Futuristik atmosfer bir o kadarda kaybolup gitmememiz için oluşturduğun günümüz tanıdık çizgi ve motifleri herkesin ruhlarına dokunmuştur..efektler ,boyut geçişleri ,tüm ince grafik hareketleri obje tasarımları !! Ve insanı oldugu yere zımbalayan Final👍🏼 yolun açık olsun.
çok teşekkürler :)

Excellent! I felt so cold and alone.
Yeah.
Baştan sona heyecanla ve keyifle izledim; gönlünüze, emeğinize sağlık! 🙏🏼✨🧿 Seslendirmeye bayılamadım sadece.. 😬
Tebrik ederim. Ülkemizde bu tür çalışmaların artmasını dilerim.
Türk yapımı olması gurur verici 🤗 demek ki yapınca oluyormuş..
The concept! The art! The story! The execution! *All* are absolutely brilliant! Words fail...
This is amazing. He searched the Galaxy to find himself.
Aslında yapay zeka ve isac amcanın 3 robot kanuna güzel bir eleştiri.
Başarılarının devamını dilerim Gökhan bey 👍
Beautiful, everything about this is just beautiful.
What a wonderful wonderful CGI Animation! Why don’t all our countries come together to create the ultimate CGI...look at how beautiful this is! The back grounds, fore grounds, characters and story line. This sis just fantastic. Than you all for the hard work and inspiration. Kudos to all that worked and contributed this project!
Wow! And the cycle restarts!
Outstanding! Every frame a work of art. Klimt meets the Twilight Zone meets Sartre.
Now THAT is an amazing piece of story telling.. I felt it, the sorrow and the madness...
Bravo, a complete story, beautifully filmed and with a great end. I was engaged from start to finish and this one is a real 10 out of 10!!!!!
RUclips didn’t recommend this, we searched for it 💁🏻♀️
Glad to experience!
Trapped and poor for two years in apartment in bad health in America. No one helps. Now the covid. I can so relate to this human. I know that the many suffering souls on Earth now are suffering even worse. What a world! What happened to caring. Bad karma to all bad greedy governments!!!
OMG, I really feel pity for that man. Dunno hw far this tech taken away our lively lives. God have to save us Finally, its INCREDIBLE👌👌
Outrageous imaginative venture............ great work.......... 5 Star must watch
Well told and very beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with us!!!
I've never seen such an amazing movie like this
I'm also proud that is a Turkish animation
Cold logic of a positronic brain.
This was enjoyable.
Beautifully done.
Unexpected and ironic end.
But not really an end.
Reminded me of The Twilight Zone stories from back in the day.
That story line was very good and a little scary if you think about it. I definitely enjoyed it.
Stunning and breathtaking!!! Very well crafted Short. Great story. Should have seen the ending coming but i didn't. Great look at how ASIMOV's "I ROBOT", 3 laws of robotics are flawed.
1.) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2.) A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3.) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
They are not actually laws but just programming. .....
Just brilliant!! Fresh and captivating.
Robotun sesine bittim ya😍bu kaçıncı izleyişim.keske orda benle robot ikimiz olsaydik her seyden uzak sonsuza kadar🤦♀️
I am speechless!! This was just amazing! The Art work, the story, the deatils, the Concept, im absoultly speechless!! This Film should get an Award, for real!
Thank you so much for putting your creativity to action and motion! I very much enjoyed that! 😳🙂
I understood "awesome awesome awesome" in this brilliant little gem !!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Loved it! The story line is easy to follow, and the animation is so good that I could've watched without the captions and still followed along. This is one to share.
Super-simplified depiction of the problem, but not a bad "solution," if you close one eye, tilt your head back, and dive past the inconsistencies.
Perfect match! I wish others could SEE!
This is truly amazing! Gave me goosebumps. honestly didn't expect the ending.
You cant rebuild your home if lost.
This was just pure Beauty d animation was incredible......and d plot flabbergasting
Btw AVARYA the title is a sanskrit word isn't it?

This reminds me of a great movie called Moon. Absolutely love the end, very enjoyable!
Yes!! With Sam Rockwell!? Great movie!!

The way he makes Robot do something beyond its programming by breaking his one finger, I find this revelant to Infinity Train Book 2 Episode 10 when MT convinces One One to give her an exit from train by showing Jesse hand number reflection on her hand.
wow that was amazing!!! I love the story twists! The mark of a truly GOOD Sci-Fi!!! :-D Excellent modeling and animation, visuals are out of this world literally!!! What did you render this on? Rendering Farm? SheepIt? What software did you use? Blender? Maya? 3DS Max? How about post production? After Effects? Editing? What a great story!! :-D Thank you for sharing
Hello Seth! Thanks for your lovely comment^^ We render this with Redshift. Each frame took about 7min. We animated it in Maya. I used after effects for post proccessing :)
@@triplepen Right on! 7min per frame is pretty good. Again very nice work! I got a Blender rendering project now, all ray-traced, 20,000 frames and I am looking at about 3hrs per frame. I'm planning to use the SheepIt community rendering farm but I need about 50-million points to buy farm-time. Looks like it will take me about 6 months to gain the points I need. :-D
@@SethEden good luck Seth :)

Absolutely gorgeous piece of art, congrats !
A great story! Well worth my time viewing. No regrets. Thank you very much.
That robot reminded me a bit of that 80s movie: Flight of the Navigator! except this one is rather has dark and sad tendencies to it. Imagine being trapped like that, in this ongoing saga, the restlessness would be torture. Constant travel, ongoing, and you can't even stay on a proper planet.
En sevdiğim kanalda bu harika kısa filmle karşılaşmak beni çok mutlu etti! Müthiş bir iş olmuş gerçekten.
Beautiful mesmerising and powerful
Wow, fabulous. Beam me in!
This is very well done, love it ❤️
uluslararası bir RUclips kanalında yerli bir iş görmek çok güzeldi. @Gökalp Gönen elinize sağlık çok güzeldi sadece robotun seslendirmesini vasat buldum daha iyi olabilirdi.
