One of the most pro-disabled movies ever made, to this very day. The villains are the able-bodied people who plot to exploit them, and they get their comeuppance.

    • @JohnSmith-mo6re

Well..."pro" is sort of subjective. This movie was one of a kind and sparked conversations that eventually led to these types of people being banned/forbidden from the circus. That's why we don't see these types anymore.
If it could be re-viewed as "pro", be cool to see them in the circus again.

@fuhq6731 They had far better lives as part of the circus than they otherwise would have had. They got to travel, socialize with their fellow performers, and it provided them actual gainful employment. The cast were all members of a genuine freak show that went on tour.
To some folk these people with their disabilities were something to be feared...this is the nature of some, to be afraid of a thing or anyone different, sadly.
I'm just glad they could make a living from being different, as the alternative would have been to become beggars or starve to death.
I don't doubt some laughed, maybe ridiculed them, but they had to pay hard cash for doing so.
In this film, the full version, one of the cast, a woman, acts as a vile person towards one of the other characters.
She's the one screaming, as the others pursue her.
She pays the ultimate price, as she ends up as a freak herself, when they get hold of her.
Some watching the movie are afraid of her, the character she plays.
Some are afraid of the others and what they do to her.
Some thinks it's funny that karma punishes her.

It is a a relatively normal man dressed to look like Schlitzie. I didn't notice that in the original monochrome version. I'm thinking that it seems likely that maybe the real Schlitzie wasn't easily persuaded to perform in this scene and he may have had difficulty following instructions, so they just substituted someone else.
